STERLING – Paying for health care is complicated. No one seriously argues with that. And it takes a lot of people to figure it all out. In Sterling, CGH Medical Center has 1,400 employees.
If this country had a simpler health care billing system, how many fewer employees would CGH need? “About 125 positions,” said Dr. Paul Steinke, CGH’s CEO and president. “That is a rough guess.” Jessica Harriger, an assistant economics professor at
Western Illinois University in Macomb, said that is not unusual. “Around the world, we have one of the largest shares of health care dollars going to overhead and administration,” she said. Simplification, she said, would reduce the number of employ-

DIXON – In their gray caps and gowns, the Sauk Valley Community College class of 2014 walked into the gym Friday night to celebrate graduation. They were culminating a “rite of passage,” Andrew Bollman, the chairman of the community college’s board, told them. And they were surrounded by their family, friends and the faculty that helped them get there. Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan, a graduate of the community college, was the commencement speaker for the school’s 48th annual commencement. He told the graduates to
“never stop moving forward” and to learn from their mistakes and, especially, the mistakes of others. Among the graduates was Lynnette Herr, 28, of Freeport, who had been working as a forklift operator at a printing factory in Mount Morris in 2011 when her father, who was working at the same factory, told her she needed to prepare for the future. “My dad had told me to not expect to be able to retire from the factory,” she said prior to Friday night’s graduation, in which she also was the student speaker. “[The factory] had gone through another name change and benefits loss.”

STERLING – Business owners Shannon and Heidi Scalise have worked hard to make the former Sauk Medical Clinic building once again a vital part of its West Third Street neighborhood. The Scalises live there, and Shannon reopened his Fine Line Body Art studio in the building. Shannon has made many upgrades to the property. He has done it in a manner that respects the historical integrity of the building and neighborhood, which is a mix of business and residential. The Scalises also have a fishing business based at the building. Shannon makes custom rods, so they sell tackle and other fishing gear. So far, so good within the parameters of the B-2-1 zoning designation now assigned to the 2-acre property. The next logical step in their business expansion was to offer live bait.
