STERLING – Three first-time candidates are battling for the 2nd Ward council seat being vacated by longtime Alderman Barry Cox. Matt Howze had filed for the 2nd Ward, but later withdrew his candidacy after concerns arose about conflicting duties. Regardless of who wins the race, the controversy surrounding Cox’s residency status will be lifted. The candidates said the situation served as added motivation to make a run. And while the candidates agree on many issues, they’re divided over the sales tax increase on the ballot. Miller and Wilen support it; Sharp is against it.

ASHTON – Tristan “Tree” Bushman hasn’t yet graduated high school, but he’s already playing as many shows in a year as other local musicians who are two or three times his age. The Ashton-Franklin-Center High School senior played more than 30 shows in 2014, and he shows no signs of slowing down this year.

The music bug bit the 17-year-old singer-songwriter early. “I started singing when I was 5. I would sing with my dad’s band, The Louie’s,” Tristan said. “I would mess around when I was young, and then I

magine you’re house hunting, and you tell the real estate agent you’d like to buy the first house you see. Let’s get the paperwork rolling, you say. But the agent refuses, saying he needs you to see a few more houses first. In what kind of alternate universe would that happen? What warm-blooded person wouldn’t pounce on that fat, tailor-made commission check? I give you Dixon Monument Co. owner Nancy Lillyman, whose approach to sales would get her laughed out of virtually any sales seminar. “I don’t want them to buy a monument the first time they meet me,” she says. She recalls an episode from a few years ago. She was with a grieving customer on the platform at her business, trying to help her envision a headstone for her husband, when an exasperated Amboy woman interrupted. “She came up and asked me, ‘Will you please let me buy my monument today?’” Lillyman says. It was the woman’s third visit to the platform. “I said, yes,” she says, laughing. “I think you’re ready.”
