History’s hidden gems Area blogger travels to out-of-the-way historic haunts

PRINCETON – John Purvis always has been fascinated by history, especially the sort of history that goes beyond the headlines and delves into the nitty-gritty of everyday lives, the often obscure stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

“When I was right out of high school, I wanted to go to college and get a degree,” said the 55-year-old Princeton native. “I wanted to teach history, but the money wasn’t there and I had to go into the workforce.”

Seven years ago, though, Purvis was forced to take a medical disability leave from his job in Arizona as a troubleshooter for an international express company. Not long after that, when his father died and his mother became terminally ill, he returned to his hometown.

Television show inspired man’s travels HIDDEN

Being back in familiar surroundings inspired him to revisit his childhood passion for history, but sitting all day researching the region’s past made him restless, so he decided not to just study the past, but to go find it.

“You can only look at the Internet so long or watch so much TV,” he said. “So I bought a decent camera, and thought I would hit the road.”

It wasn’t just the obvious historical sites that interested Purvis. He was equally fascinated by the places that had gotten lost along the way, forgotten spots where people made their own bits of history that he believed should be remembered.

“When I was a kid, one of my favorite shows came on Sunday mornings and was called ‘On the Road with Charles Kuralt.’ He would just drive around and look for stuff,” Purvis said. “And he would find all of these obscure places and tell these fascinating stories about the people who lived there. I just loved the way he made everyday people interesting.

“So I decided I would do what Charles Kuralt did: I would hit the road and find my own obscure places with stories to tell.”

For the past 3 years, that’s what Purvis has done. He shares his discoveries with others on a blog called “Off the Beaten Path in Illinois,” on blogspot.com.

It contains stories about the places he visits, and the people who made history there. Readers are invited to comment on his entries, and often the comments add details to the stories he tells, or lead him to new discoveries.

“I’ve found out things about the state that would amaze you,” he said. “There are all these memorials and historical sites that aren’t wellknown now or are completely forgotten. But I think they are interesting, and I think it’s important to tell their stories.”

Purvis began his journey into the past close to home, identifying and photographing historical sites near Princeton, then gradually expanded his operations.

“I think the farthest we’ve gone is a couple of hundred miles,” Purvis said. “So far, we’ve just done day trips, but I think we might start doing overnight trips, too.”

Oftentimes, Purvis is accompanied on his expeditions by a couple of other local history enthusiasts: Nick Bouslog and Tom Anderson.

Bouslog, known as “Lil’ Nick” in the blog, and Anderson, who is retired, are members of Purvis’ church, First Lutheran Church of Princeton.

“They’re history nuts like I am,” he said with a laugh.

Occasionally, Purvis is truly forced off the beaten path in his quest to find neglected artifacts. Locating a forgotten one-room country school or an abandoned cemetery filled with crumbling headstones often involves trudging over some pretty difficult terrain.

Man aims to make sure stories ‘are not forgotten’ TRIPS

That can be a challenge, because Purvis had a portion of his right foot amputated a couple of years ago, the result of a bone disease. He now walks with a cane.

“I get as close as I can with the car,” he said. “And I have some pretty powerful telephoto lenses for the cameras. But if I can’t get there, then Nick will go,” and take the photos that accompany each blog.

One of his latest, dated Sept. 4, concerns the Lee County Infirmary, near the Green River Ordnance complex in southern Lee County.

A previous blog told the story of the ordnance plant and its contributions to winning World War II. One of the abandoned structures Purvis identified as an administration building, though, turned out to be something quite differ-

ent – the long abandoned Lee County Infirmary, also known as the Lee County Poor Farm.

Counties throughout the state established poor farms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to provide for local residents who were too poor, too sick, or too old to provide for themselves. They were actual working farms, producing much of what their residents consumed.

Poor farms were gradually phased out as nursing homes, and other public facilities assumed their functions.

One of the blog’s followers informed Purvis of the misidentification, which led him to research the old poor farm and tell its story, replete with plenty of photographs of the dilapidated infirmary structure.

The research led Purvis to another discovery: Some of the infirmary’s residents were buried in a nearby cemetery plot. Needless to say, Purvis gives his followers a brief his-

tory of the “Lee County Poor Farm Burial Grounds.”

The blog before that – dated Aug. 28 – dealt with Depot Days in Amboy, and the town’s long connection with the Illinois Central Railroad.

His travels also have unearthed some amazing “believe-it-or-not” stories, he said. For example, his Aug. 21 blog informed readers that Dwight, 75 miles southeast of Princeton, once was the headquarters for the nation’s most popular alleged cure for alcoholism and drug addiction, the “Keeley Institute,” with its “Gold Cure.”

In the 1890s, institute founders Dr. Leslie Keeley and John Oughton claimed a concoction they injected into patients could cure cravings for alcohol and narcotics. The “cure” was so popular that people came from all over the nation, transforming the sleepy country town into a bustling community with all

the modern amenities.

Keeley and Oughton were able to establish more than 200 branches throughout the country before the craze eventually faded in the 20th century.

In the 3 years since he began his journey down memory lane, Purvis has uncovered countless other stories about the region’s past that he has shared with his readers.

And he’s sure there are plenty more out there waiting to be found.

As he sees things, he’s not only telling fascinating and often surprising stories about the region’s past. He’s giving a voice to people who have been silenced for way too long.

“These stories were vitally important to someone at sometime,” Purvis said. “I’m trying to make sure they are not forgotten, so the next generations can have a better appreciation for history. I know that sounds old-fashioned, but that’s the way I feel.”

Older adults savvy on social media Study suggests that use of new technology might have some health benefits Tribune News Service

New research shows seniors might be more savvy at tweeting, Facebook posting, emailing and Skyping than they get credit for.

A study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking shows there might be portions of older adults who use technology as often as younger adults, and that it might have some health benefits.

It counteracts the popular perception that seniors aren’t interested in social media or have difficulty using email, instant message, Facebook, Twitter or video calling.

William Chopik, a researcher at Michigan State University, studied survey responses from 591 older Americans, with the average age being 68, and found that more than 95 percent were either “somewhat” or “very” sat-

isfied with social technology. And 72 percent said they were not opposed to learning new technologies.

“Despite the attention that the digital divide has garnered in recent years, a large proportion of older adults use technology to maintain their social networks and make their lives easier,” Chopik said in a university news release.

Chopik also found that social technology use was associated with less loneliness, which was tied to better physical and mental health. Seniors who used social media also tended to be more satisfied with life, had fewer symptoms of depression and fewer chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Nonetheless, the study did not prove that social media use improved their health.

Many dog lovers downsizing Aging baby boomers are opting for pint-sized pooches Tribune News Service

MINNEAPOLIS – Sue Bohlmann always loved big dogs.

Golden retrievers, especially.

Then she and her husband added a Bernese mountain dog to the mix.

“Big dogs have such a presence,” she said. “They like you to bury your head in their big chests or ram their big bodies into you. They’re just so comforting.”

But when their 4-year-old Bernese died suddenly and they had to put down their aging golden retriever shortly thereafter, Bohlmann, 69, took a serious look at downsizing her dogs.

“I wanted to make sure I was diligent in my choice, because I would be moving into my 70s with whatever

breed we chose,” she said.

She and her husband, Pete, now share their Minnetonka, Minnesota, home with a couple of tiny tail-waggers: an energetic and agile 11-pound Havanese named Mateo and a 6-pound papillon-Maltese mix named Gretel, whose good looks make up for her lack of smarts, Bohlmann joked.

More than half of U.S. households own a dog that weighs less than 25 pounds, according to the marketing research firm Packaged Facts. The trend toward pint-size pooches has been documented since 2000, but has accelerated in recent years in part because of an aging population of baby boomers such as Bohlmann.

Small dogs more affordable in general DOWNSIZING

As these dog lovers head into their golden years, the notion of scaling down becomes more pressing. Bodies are aging, strength is waning and occasionally we are less sturdy on our feet.

“If you’re concerned about falling, having a big, boisterous puppy in your household could be challenging,” said Cindy Johnson of the Minnesota Animal Humane Society.

In addition, many senior high-rises and assisted-living communities have size restrictions, which make it difficult to bring larger breeds with you if you need – or want – to move.

And if you’re planning to do some traveling, small dogs are more likely to be accepted at hotels, fit better in a cramped RV and can easily be

Gauging energy levels Depending on the breed, more petite dogs also might be less demanding.

“One of the big concerns

seniors have is being able to walk with their dogs,” said Carol Martin, owner of Tails of 2 Cities, a pet-sitting and dog-walking company. “It’s healthy for everyone to get outside, but the smaller ones are fine in the backyard, just chasing squirrels.”

But a dog’s energy levels and temperament can be just as important as size.

If you have young grandchildren who visit often, an easygoing Lab or retriever mix might be a better fit than a high-strung Jack Russell terrier that might not like having its tail tugged.

Grooming needs also might be a consideration. A shorthaired dog won’t have to get to the groomer every 6 weeks like a poodle. Other small breeds, such as Lhasa apsos and spaniels, need frequent brushing to keep their coats from matting.

Rescue groups and animal shelters encourage older dog lovers to consider adopting an adult dog, or even a white-muzzled senior. Adult dogs have outgrown their rambunctious puppy stage, and there are fewer surprises when it comes to their health and personalities.

“Many of us remember what it was like to get our first dog in our 20s or 30s when we first set out on our own,” said Johnson of the Humane Society.

“You get 55 or older, you might say, ‘No, thank you. I want a nice adult dog, easygoing, where I don’t have to worry about training and destroying the house.’”

Older dogs can be a better fit “energy-wise,” said Jean Beuning, who runs Top Dog Country Club in New Germany, Minnesota, and is raising money to build a nonprofit

sanctuary for senior dogs.

“Older dogs aren’t going to be bouncing off the walls if someone’s in a walker,” she said, or underfoot as a tripping hazard.

No matter what breed an aging dog lover settles on, it’s important to consider the dog’s future, too.

“I know people who’ve set aside money in their will to care for their dogs,” Martin said. “At least you have a better chance of having someone help out if you go first.”

“This way, nobody tells me I have to move to assisted living and my dogs can’t follow,” she said.

“We can all stay at home.”

As for Bohlmann, she has no regrets about downsizing. She ended up needing neck surgery that would have made walking and caring for a big dog more difficult.

“A companion is a companion,” she said, “no matter what size.”

Manufacturing and assembly take place in Chicagoland and Wisconsin, but testing is done in this basement, and in the homes of others who try out the LEDs. The LEDs create light with wavelengths similar to sunshine, and each 18-inch unit uses just 28 watts.

As of early September, the couple had sold about 350 units, at energy fairs, master gardener events, or similar showcases. Most often, the buyer comes back for about a dozen more, they said.
