It’s time to be thinking about what you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and keep yourself healthy. The number one thing you can do for yourself and for others is get the flu shot. Flu shots are especially a good idea for the very young and the elderly. For this reason Lee County Council on Aging has set up time to have flu clinics. No appointment is needed. Bring your Medicare card and any other insurance cards you may have. Depending on your insurance, there may be a charge. ctober is a great time to get involved in new activities that will keep you busy during the upcoming winter months. As the warm months come to an end and you finish up all of your fall chores, it is time to look for new activities and friends at the Whiteside County Senior Center. We are offering several new activities this month, so make sure to check them out in the Echo.

Need a little more excitement and risk in your life? Come and learn to play “Farkle,” beginning at 10 a.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 2. It doesn’t matter if you have never played the game or if you have lots of experience with Farkle, we need everyone’s assistance in getting a group together to learn this new risk taking dice game at the Senior Center. We also have added a new bridge group, starting at 10 a.m.

o, our summer waited until the early part of September to really heat up – just when the children went back to school!

You’ve got to love our Illinois weather. But, as September turns to October, we can expect some beautiful fall days ahead.

I hope you enjoy them.

Did you enjoy this past weekend? It was a busy one for us here at the Senior Center and the Post House Ballroom. On Friday night, we hosted dinner for

150 music enthusiasts before the “Here Come the Mummies” concert at the Historic Dixon Theatre, then hosted a post-concert in the ballroom as well.

If you were there, you know what a great time it was.

Then, on Saturday, Lee County Council on Aging took part in the United Way’s 2013 campaign kickoff. The kickoff was part of Dixon Main Street’s Scarecrow Festival in downtown Dixon, and our booth

featured games, prizes and giveaways. The United Way of Lee County is an important source of funding for us here at LCCOA. We try and do our part by spending those funds prudently and for the benefit of our clients. Once again, I am pleased to announce that 100 percent of the employees here, including our transportation drivers and dispatchers,

have pledged support this year. When you are asked to contribute this year, I hope you will be generous. Thank you.

Earlier last week we held our annual dinner meeting with elections.

Jaime Blatti, from the Lee-Ogle Transportation System, was this year’s speaker and gave an informative talk. The new LCCOA Board of Directors will be seated at our October meeting, and new officers will be seated. We would like to extend thanks to Al Esgar, who has been our president the past two years. And thanks also to retiring board members Emma Carnaghi and Carolyn Johns for their service to LCCOA. October looks like

“It’s Showtime!” at the senior center at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, so come join us for lunch and then stay for the showing of “42,” which is the life story of Jackie Robinson and his days with the Brooklyn Dodgers. This is a highly acclaimed movie and one you don’t want to miss. Come join us, the movie and popcorn are free thanks to Whiteside Homecare and Beth Sterk!

The all-important Medicare Part D open enrollment period begins on the 15th. Our Outreach staff will be on hand to help you choose the best plan for you. We continue with another flu clinic on the 16th, sponsored by Gaffey Home Nursing, and another Red Cross blood drive on the 29th.

Unity Hospice returns with another session on How to Deal With Grief on the 8th and, for fun, we will be sponsoring

Bingo twice (Oct. 11 and 25) and our monthly Euchre tournament is on the 20th. Check out our other, regular weekly activities elsewhere in this copy of the Echo, and come down and visit with us sometime and join the fun.

Finally, we all know what fun day comes at the end of October.

On the 31st we will be holding our annual Halloween party. There will be tricks, treats, and the ever popular costume contest for those brave enough to show up. A great time will be had by all, so don’t miss it.

They toured the facility with Doug Vandersee, executive director, and learned how people are referred to us, the services the senior center provides, and the kind of facilities that are available.

The annual enrollment period begins Oct. 15, and ends on Dec. 7.

This is the time you can change your coverage if you are not satisfied with your Medicare Part D drug plan or your Medicare Advantage plan.

This also is the time when you can enroll if you did not do so during your initial enrollment period.

’ve discovered if you find yourself seeing yellow cars all over, you’ve been hanging around an 11-year-old too long. It’s refreshing and taxing at the same time.

Hanging out with a 1½ -year-old is kind of the same, but much more intense.

I have found that I can have 6 bad days, but Tuesdays with Railynn are good for my heart, and everybody we run into during the day – always her great-great grandma Joanie (Dony in her language) and the residents and staff of Heritage Square.

Everybody should have one of these (great-grandchildren).

I’m thinking every nursing/retirement home should have a daycare center in the same building.

The regular things are happening at the Ballroom this month – we’re pretty busy!

Thank you, Dave Knie and Knie Appliance, for the new Kitchenaid double oven for the Whiteside County Senior Center kitchen. Thanks to all who made a donation to pay for our oven. Our baker, Shirley Schwarz, is baking wonderful desserts for us.

On Oct. 9, the CRC will have a Meet The Instructor event with Will Studer, a professional technology consultant. He soon will be teaching new classes at the senior center.

There will be two sessions for convenience, one at 2 p.m. and another at 7 p.m.

These sessions are free, and we will discuss recommendations for computer purchases and take basic questions from folks about computers

and technology.

We also will be asking for input about what types of classes people would like to have offered.

Again, these sessions will be free and are open to all ages and computer skill levels.

All I can say is, Wow! I shared a need for our ovens and God met that need in a grand way.

First donations were given so freely, great and small and it all adds up.

We almost had enough for the entire cost.

Second, Dave Knie at Knie Appliance saw

a need and answered a prayer. He not only offered us a top-of-theline oven, he set a price that was within our budget and installed it the next day.

So we are baking now!

Words cannot express how humbled and grateful I am to work in a community like ours.

Also, a thank you needs to

go out to my volunteers who help in my kitchen every day. They are the best.

To the Sauk Valley Food Bank and the Salvation Army, a huge thank you for the food that we use in our kitchen and for our commodity program.

To those who have brought in all the wonderful produce this month, individuals as well as Poci’s

It helps supplement our budget, and boy do we like all the fresh produce with our meals.

You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program.

LCCOA, RFCC and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide options counseling, Medicare counseling, and information and assistance to anyone who is

60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare Information class.

In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, ask what to bring when making your appointment or bring all of the following information: proof of all income for this year (Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, wages, any other income), Medicare card, Medicare Part D card, Medicaid card, value of all assets (bank accounts,

CDs, any investments, investment property, business assets, cash value of life insurance, car, house, prepaid burial, burial plots, etc.), proof of income for 2012 – even if you do not file income taxes, we will need tax documents for Social Security benefits (SSA1099), pension (1099-R), interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), and wages (W-2, etc.) – Social Security cards, and a list of current medications (including 30-day quantity and dosage).

You should call ahead for an appointment.

Home visits can be provided to clients who are homebound. Caseworkers also travel to several locations each month in Lee and Whiteside counties (see below).

Maybe the hot weather is past. Hopefully all of you survived the hot days. Mother Nature is changing into all the beautiful colors of fall.

Look around and enjoy the transition.

Things also are changing at The Emporium Thrift Center. We are changing over to the fall/winter season.

We are getting out all the fall clothes, including jackets, coats, sweatshirts, shoes and purses. It sounds early, but it’s best to shop while we have a big selection. We have men’s suits, sports jackets and ties. Need one for a one time

occasion? We are the place for you. We have a special room for baby and children’s clothes, and at the right price.

Our selections of fall and holiday decorations are impressive.

For your holiday celebrations we have a supply of glass snack sets, candles, table linens, bedding, home décor, and miscellaneuous glassware. The Emporium is looking forward to fall. We have lots of fall decorations, including wreaths and flower arrangements.

Halloween is just around the corner, so check us out for some of those “haunting” collectables. If you are the creative type of person, there is no

What’s the difference between preventive and diagnostic services?

Dear Marci, I was told that Medicare covers certain preventive services for free. However, my doctor told me I will need to pay for the preventive service I received, because it became a diagnostic service. What is the difference between a preventive and diagnostic service?

health care services differ, depending on whether the care is preventive or diagnostic. Due to the Affordable Care Act, Medicare covers many preventive services free of charge. If a service is considered to be diagnostic, Medicare may cover the service. However, charges, such as a coinsurance or copayment for the service, most likely will apply. For example, charges may apply if your doctor needs to investigate or treat a new or existing health problem

during your annual wellness visit. Similarly, if you get a preventive colonoscopy screening and your doctor removes a polyp during the screening, Medicare will consider the polyp removal to be a diagnostic service. Therefore, the colonoscopy no longer will count as a preventive service under Medicare rules, and costs may apply.

Keep in mind that while many preventive services are covered under Medicare for free, additional treatment given during

or after the preventive service may come with a fee. For example, charges may apply if your health care provider meets with you to discuss other health care needs before or after you receive a Medicarecovered preventive service.

Charges also may apply if your health care provider detects a problem and provides additional services or treatments.

Medicare covers preventive and diagnostic services whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan, as long

as you meet certain rules and requirements. Original Medicare is the traditional Medicare program administered directly through the federal government. Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare private health plans, are offered through private insurance companies.

Medicare Information class at WCSC 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 Free The basic information that we provide will help our community members who are new to Medicare and those who want more information make a more informed decision when it comes to their options with Medicare. Our Outreach Department staff are trained Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. SHIP is a free counseling service provided by the Illinois Department of Insurance. Rules of the Road class at LCCOA 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 Free The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, Department of Senior and Community Services is offering a Rules of the Road class designed as a refresher course to help a person take their driving test. No charge, but sign-up is required.

by VCP Home Health Care at LCCOA 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 VCP Home Health Care will be talking about diabetes and diabetes nutrition.

What diabetes is, how to prevent diabetes, blood sugar testing, foot care and diabetic nutrition will be discussed. Participants are encouraged to ask questions. Handouts on “Good/Bad” foods will be available along with free blood sugar test and blood pressure test.
