Samantha and Ruth in Outreach will be more than happy to help.

But, of course, the Post House Community Center is not just for seniors.

Every month, we present a wide variety of social, entertainment and edu-

cational programs open to anyone. Examples this month include programs on reverse Mortgages and grants available for home remodeling, as well as one of our popular Euchre tournaments and Bingo.

We are also sponsoring a Book and Bake Sale in the Community Center along with an Accessories Exchange in the Post House Ballroom, all on Feb. 26, so come on down.

Also on tap are a couple of mini spelling bees. If you like sharpening your wits, come on down and have some low key fun with folks who similarly enjoy the challenge of trying to spell words right, but who won’t care if you get them wrong.

However, if you really enjoy the challenge, mark your calendar for

March 22 when we hold our State Senior Spelling Bee qualifier bee.

Sorry, you need to be 50 or older to participate in this, but you may earn a trip to the state finals at the State Fair in August.

Elsewhere in this edition you can read about a recent donation we received from donors directing their Thrivent “Choice Dollars” to Lee County Council on Aging.

With funding still being cut back from most of our state and federal sources, we must rely more and more on private sources like this in order to keep our level of services. You, our patrons, are an important part of that, and there are many ways you can help. Besides Thrivent Choice, did you know that, if you make your

Several of our BEST (Business Employment Skills Team) staff have left to pursue other positions in our communities. BEST is a program to help displaced workers get a chance to complete their GED, college degree, and gain valuable work experience skills to pursue a full-time position in the local area. Thank you to all of the best staff who have helped us to provide quality customer service in our reception, administration and kitchen areas.

By Geoff Vanderlin February, what have you got going for you, other than the fact that you’re only 28 days long, which gets us to March, and spring a little quicker?

Well, there’s Groundhog’s Day, when we find out if that spring will come early or not. There’s Valentine’s Day, when thoughts should turn to love (or chocolate, as the case may be). Then there’s my birthday, when I turn the magical age of 65 and enter the uncharted, for me, waters of Medicare.

Every day right now, more than 10,000 Americans are turning 65 – many of them right here in Lee County.

Here at the Post House Community Center we are noticing a strong trend of an increasing number of baby boomers coming in to learn about the ins and outs of Medicare.

This is one of the things we are here for. We are your unbiased information and assistance center for a wide variety of benefits and programs available to seniors, and Lee County’s govern-

By Doug Vandersee The holiday season is behind us and I hope your daily schedule has returned to normal.

Winter is a time when daylight hours seem to be very limited. When you wake up it is dark, it may still be dark. When you head to work or your activities, the cold weather forces us inside during the day. And of course, it is dark at the end of the day when you head home.

It is easy to become homebound and inactive.

The Whiteside County Senior Center has a variety of daily activities and programs to help motivate

you to get out of bed and get moving each day.

Senior centers focus on helping seniors to be able to stay in their home as long as they can and to provide social interaction for seniors. Check out the daily, weekly and monthly activities, programs and educational sessions coming in February!

February, another month with a holiday (President’s Day), is its regular short month again this year.

The problem with holidays is that the same amount of work has to get done, so we just work harder and faster to do so. Not complaining, just saying!

Along with the other events going on this February, we have the Accessories Exchange from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Ballroom, and the Book and Bake Sale from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Community Center.

The Accessories Exchange allows brides and others to bring in their accessories from their weddings, receptions, or other parties to sell, give away, or barter. It also lets new brides come in to hopefully find some things for their weddings at a less expensive cost. It’s posted on our Face-

What is a Medigap Policy?

Did you know? ...

Dear Marci, I am turning 65 soon and am confused about supplemental health insurance. I see so much advertising about these plans, but what are they and do I need one?

– Lenna (Rio Rancho, New Mexico) Dear Lenna, You are in good company – many Americans becoming eligible for Medicare receive mail or see TV or newspaper ads for “Medicare supplements” or “supplemental health insurance.” Both of these terms usually refer to Medigap policies.

A Medigap policy is a standardized supplemental health plan that pays for part or all of Medicare-related health care costs that you would otherwise pay

out of pocket. Medigap policies only work with Original Medicare Parts A and B, which is Medicare coverage through the federal government. If you plan to get your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company, called a Medicare Advantage Plan, then you cannot purchase a Medigap.

Medigaps supplement Original Medicare costs.

These costs include deductibles, coinsurance charges, and copayments (copays).

Medigaps do not usually pay for coverage gaps in Medicare, such as excluded services like routine dental or vision care. However, some Medigaps cover emergency care received in foreign countries, which is typically not covered

by Medicare.

Medigaps are regulated by each state, usually under a department of insurance or similar state agency.

This means that some aspects of Medigaps work differently in each state. Medigaps are still subject to some federal regulations, but different states may have their own Medigap rules as well.

There are different types of Medigap policies that you can buy. Private insurance companies offer ten standardized Medigap policies in most states: Plans A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. Note that insurance companies do not have to offer all ten Medigap policies. Plans with the same letter offer the same benefits, but each insurance company may charge a different

monthly premium. For example, Medigap Plan A offered by Insurance Company 1 provides the same benefits as Medigap Plan A offered

by Insurance Company 2, but the two companies may charge different premiums. This means that you can get the same coverage even if you choose a plan with a lower monthly premium.

Lenna, before you consider purchasing a Medigap, be sure to do your research. Take steps to help understand Medigaps and find the best option for you.

Lee County Council on Aging is, once again, partnering with Association of Illinois Senior Centers and Illinois Department on Aging by holding preliminary competition for the 2017 Illinois Senior Spelling Bee. The Bee provides

an opportunity for participants to use their life long skills of literacy.

About The Bee: The Illinois State Senior Spelling Bee competition is statewide.

Illinois adults ages 50 and older compete in the competition.

This program is coordinated by the Association Of Illinois Senior Centers with the help of Illinois Department On Aging.

Competition includes three levels: local, regional and finals.

The finals take place at the Illinois State Fair on Senior Day Monday, Aug. 14.

Outreach at LCCOA Baby Boomers, ... We’re Here For You! We hear it daily these days, “I’m not ready to be a ‘senior’ yet.” This is true of most of you baby boomers out there. With the times being different, being a “senior” is different. Many people turning 65, though categorized by society as “senior” do not feel like seniors and are not yet ready to embrace all that comes with it. Many are still working full time, have full calendars, stay up late and don’t want what their mothers or fathers had at this age yet. That’s okay. We understand this and are trying to help change the stigma that comes with the term “senior.”

ITAC

Have trouble hearing on cell phone?

Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone.

The program still provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephones to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing. Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service that remits to the program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed from 9

a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC at 815-622-9230 or LCCOA at 815-288-9236 in advanced to set up an appointment to see about qualifying for this wonderful program.

Cell phones must be Bluetooth capable.

Applicants who wish to apply for this program should bring in their cell phone.

Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell users that don’t receive a phone bill must bring their cell phone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).

Outreach at WCSC Getting help in Whiteside County The Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) Aging and Disabled resource staff helps with a variety of programs for older adults and persons with disabilities.

Walk-in day is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the WCSC. Appointments need scheduled in advance for Medicare counseling. Residents in Morrison, Erie, Prophetstown or Fulton must call in advance to set up an appointment at a meeting site in their area.

Best practice would be to come about 5 minutes early before appointment times. It is also best to ask in advance, what to bring on walk in day or for appointments. Please call and cancel the appointment if needed as soon as possible. The Aging and Disabled Resource center does not charge fees, however they appreciate donations. Please call 815-622-9230, ext. 194.

New hours in the ADRC Department Effective Jan. 17, our hours in the ADRC have changed to 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Mondays, we take walk-ins from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments are by appointment only for Medicare counseling Tuesday through Friday. If you would like an appointment, please

call our department at 815622-9230, ext. 194. Business hours for the rest of the center will remain 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday through Friday.

Accuracy is important The WCSC ADRC staff helps many people to connect to many benefit programs available. Most of the applications they help fill out are for state and federal programs. State and federal applications will have very specific requirements. If the ADRC staff ask for specific things it is a good idea to provide that information for them. They do not make the program requirements but they are required to follow them.

Anyone that knowingly provides inaccurate information could be subject to punishment under state or federal laws. In addition, failure to provide accurate information may cause the applicant to not get approved for the program, to be terminated from a program, and possibly pay back money because misinformation is provided. This is the reason the ADRC staff will be adamant about their clients bringing in the proper information. They do it for your protection. Do not forget to keep those important tax papers. If anyone is unsure what they need to keep or get ride of, stop in on walk-in day Monday or call and make an appointment. Everyone stay safe and warm this month.

Help with Senior Citizen Tax Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption (PTAX 340 & PTAX 329) If you have qualified for the Senior Citizens Tax Assessment Freeze and/or Senior Homestead Exemption in the past, you will soon be receiving your annual forms in the mail from the Whiteside County Assessment Office.

We can help fill out and notorize these forms on our walkin Mondays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. As with any program, it is important to bring the necessary information with you to complete these forms. If you file income taxes, please complete your taxes first before having your forms filled out. If you do not file income taxes, you will need to bring your 2016 income statements. A driver’s license, or state ID will also be necessary in order to notorize your forms.

Transportation In the first decade of the 21st century, the U.S. experienced unprecedented increases in the price of fuel, at some points even topping $4 per gallon.

Many believe the public transportation industry reaped the benefits to some extent through increased ridership. I don’t think any of us ever predicted that some 10 years later, we might be faced with the opposite problem. With gas prices consistently lower than we’ve seen them in almost 20 years, will consumers be more likely to go back to their personal vehicles rather than continuing to choose public transportation? Many would argue that the upswing in transit ridership of the past 10 years has not had as much to do with gas prices as it has been a more permanent cultural and attitudinal change toward public transportation.

Whatever the case may be, there is no doubt that the industry needs to be at the top of its game to retain its current riders and

attract new ones. As with any business, excellent customer service is the best way to keep your customers, (in this case the riders) coming back. After all, the transit business is all about the passengers. Up to date technology, new buses,

and clean facilities are all important, but how employees interact with the riders is at the core of good customer service and is ultimately what will make them repeat riders. Lee-Ogle Transportation System and Whiteside County Public Transit deci-

sion makers recognize this and work towards excellent customer service with staff.

To be able to provide good customer service, public transportation agencies must first properly train their front line employees.

Drivers, dispatchers,

and anyone who might come in contact with the passengers should receive customer service training and refresher training regularly. This will help to emphasize the importance of customer service in agency culture.

Customer service training should also include conflict resolution training. Inevitably, drivers and dispatchers will encounter difficult customers or will have to help resolve a conflict between customers.

It is also important to recognize good customer service when we see or hear about it.

Often, we tend to get caught up in focusing on negative behavior or incidents. But recognizing the positive behavior often has a greater impact. The challenges for front line transit employees present reallife scenarios that test bus operators and dispatchers on their ability to resolve them. The riders’ interactions with transit system employees, both on the phone and in person while riding, will very likely

have the greatest impact on whether choice riders will return. And for those non-choice riders that may have no other alternative, their experience while scheduling a ride or riding the bus will often impact their attitude toward fellow riders and transit employees during future trips.

Both Lee-Ogle Transportation and Whiteside County Public Transit invests in developing a culture that stresses the importance of high quality customer service and things beyond your control (like declining gas prices) will hopefully not have a negative impact on your ridership.

Administration cannot always identify great service on our own.

The passengers are our customers and we need to hear from you.

Please don’t hesitate to let us know when a dispatcher or driver is doing well and accommodating your needs with a smile on their face. Rewarding good service can be infectious both for staff and passengers.
