By Cody Cutter | Sauk Valley Media BETTENDORF, Iowa – When it comes to taking wedding photos, Rick Jennisch likes to have an extra and he likes to have them in the sky. set of eyes — Jennisch is a Quad City-based photographer whose gotten in on the ground level, and beyond, of the increas - ingly popular trend of drone photography at weddings. He’s been in the photography business for nearly a quarter of a century, and the high-flying technology is the latest addition to his camera bag of tricks that he uses to capture those picture-perfect moments for clients. “It gives the client a whole new perspective on their venue, and an aerial shot of their ceremony they wouldn’t have had from the ground,” Jennisch said. “There’s so much more you can do with a drone than you can do with a [typical] camera.” cont’d to page 26

Rick Jennisch takes his drone for a buzz in front of his studio in downtown Bettendorf. “It gives the client a whole new perspective on their venue, and an aerial shot of their ceremony they wouldn’t have had from the ground,” he said. “There’s so much more you can do with a drone than you can do with a [typical] camera.”

He had thought about utilizing drones for a while, but the regulatory hoops he had to jump through initially turned him off. But the more he thought about it, the more he began to see it would be worth the effort.
“The creative outlet gives you so many new compositions and a unique perspective,” Jennisch said. “No one else in the area was doing drone wedding photography, so I thought I wanted to be the first one to do it and offer it.”
He became certified last February, and today he uses his trusty Autell
Robotics EVO II drone to give clients a bird’s-eye view of their wedding.
Armed with a compact camera in its belly, the nimble little machines can zip in and out of places that would have been impossible to get to before, giving customers the big picture or zooming in for an up-close shot. The Autell is great for stability and sharpness, Jennisch said.
Drone technology has improved significantly in the past decade — with drones that are smaller and lightweight using cameras that can capture much more detail — and the high-flying hightech tool is only getting better. Drones can capture stunning images that offer a big-picture perspective of the wedding.
Guests can gather on the lawn to spell out a special message. Emotional moments that wouldn’t have been possible to get from the ground can also be captured, like a view of the bride and her father hiding on one side of the house while the groom waits to see her at the altar — all in one shot.
Drone shots provide a contrast between the intimacy of ground-level photos and the epic grandeur of an aerial shot.
While the drone can only go so far,
Jennisch has no such limitations. He’ll go anywhere for love. He shoots in and around the Quad Cities, including the Sauk Valley, but also does destination weddings —“anywhere in the U.S. or internationally,” his website says. DRONES cont’d to page 27
