t Northern Illinois TV, owner Dan Massey and his team are doing more than adjusting antennas and mounting televisions on

walls. Northern Illinois TV offers several services, including satellite dish and security system installation, and helping customers with smart home features that allow them to control thermostats and doors from their smartphones and computers. At the heart of his business is customer service, Massey said. That means spending time with customers, to understand their needs and help them find the right equipment – and to answer the call when service repairs or adjustments are needed. “If you do a good job, customers are happy,” he Dan Massey said. Massey, born and raised in the Sauk Valley, has nearly 30 years of experience in the field, and over that time he has seen some incredible developments in the industry. About 8 years ago, he decided to branch out on his own and establish his own business. His team includes Judy Weems, who manages the office, and technician Jacob Reitzel.

Sometimes, getting a customer set up can be a pretty tall order, but the crew at Northern Illinois TV will go to just about any heights to get the job done, like installing a freestanding TV antenna.

Northern Illinois TV, 121 N. Division Ave., in Polo, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Find it on Facebook, go to northernILtv.com or call 815-9464389 to request a consultation, book an appointment or learn more about all the products and services Dan Massey and his team have to offer. While the latest smart TVs are fairly simple to set up, Massey also enjoys helping customers who want a custom installation, mounted above a fireplace, with cords and components tucked out of sight inside a wall. “We provide the next level of installation,” he said, and in-home consultations are free. The Northern Illinois TV team stays up on the latest equipment and features by attending seminars and classes, so they can answer any question and help guide a customer to the best products for their homes. “We are constantly going to continuing education,” he said. “We want to be ready to assist our customers as the times change and their needs change. “A big part of our role is selling the customer the right product.” As folks opt to cut the cable cord, Massey has been fielding more requests for antenna installations, too. With the right antenna, people still can connect to their favorite local and national programming, news and weather. Installation of security alarms and systems remain a popular request, and often customers want to add the latest smartphone-enabled features such as doorbells with video cameras, or thermostats that can be controlled remotely. With his business office in Polo, Massey serves customers in a 25- to 30-mile radius of his town, and sometimes farther. It’s all part of his mission to provide great customer service. Massey enjoys leaving a job knowing he’s just left satisfied customers to enjoy their new TV or home features. And he really enjoys his job. “It’s neat to see people excited with their purchase.” Massey said. “And we do so many different things, every day is different, no 2 days are the same, and that keeps everything fresh.”

Fulfilling your final wishes

Life’s end will always be a constant, but where people choose to be laid to rest is changing, and Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation is changing right along with them, meeting the growing demand from those who choose an urn instead of a coffin as their final resting place

he funeral industry is witnessing a huge shift to cremation across the country, and in the Sauk Valley Area. Families are seeking more affordable death care alternatives. Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation has significantly lowered those costs, and increased the types of cremation services available to several communities in the Sauk Valley Area. Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation in Sterling has provided funeral and cremation services to families for over 45 years in Sterling and Rock Falls. What you might not know is that Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation is able to pass on these savings for cremation to families living in Dixon, Amboy, Walnut, Tampico, Lyndon, Prophetstown, Morrison, Fulton, and Milledgeville. Simple cremation offers a less expensive and more flexible alternative to a traditional burial, and can therefore significantly reduce costs. No casket, cemetery plot, embalming, or burial vault is required, immediately reducing funeral expenses. A direct cremation is the industry term for a “Simple Cremation.” Your loved one is compassionately removed from the place of death, held in the care of the funeral home, legal documentation completed (filing of the death certificate, cremation permit and cremation authorization), a cremation container secured and cremation process conducted, writing of obituary, an online obituary posted, and the cremains returned to the family in a basic urn. Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation includes all of these services for $1,500 complete with an urn. Simple cremation services in the Sauk Valley Area range from $1,500 to $2,795 (as of March 10, 2020). When visiting schillingfuneralhome. com you are able to view cremation services and

Whether it’s time to bring in your lawn mower for a tune-up or time to shop for new equipment, a visit to Dambman Lawn Mower Hospital in Polo has everything you need. Second-generation owner Jared Dambman has just moved into his new building, with more than 22,000 square feet for his showroom and repair operation. “Everyone should come see the new place,” Dambman said. Dambman said he’s happy to be settled into his

new building after a fire in October 2018 forced him to move his shop into a temporary location until recently. No one was hurt in the fire, but two buildings, several lawn tractors and other equipment, and supplies were destroyed. With the new building Dambman has expanded his operations, which is needed with his busy-year round schedule. He’s also created more space for his showroom where customers can find Simplicity and Massport mowers as well as portable generators, log splitters and pressure washers. This spring he plans to add home generators to his inventory. The original business was established in 1955 by Harry Folk, who decided to use the word “hospital” in the name in honor of his wife, who worked as a school nurse in Polo. Gene Dambman bought the business in 1977, and in 2016 he passed it along to his son, Jared. Through the years business has remained strong. Dambman said he enjoys owning his own business, adding that the mechanical work has always been like second nature for him. Dambman Lawn Mower Hospital serves residential and commercial customers who can find new as well as refurbished mowers. At the heart of the business is the service: Jared diagnoses mechanical problems and relishes the challenge of fixing them, be it a broken belt or a worn-out engine. He aims to keep his loyal customers’ equipment working through each season. Spring is a busy time, with many customers returning for their mowers’ annual spring tune-up. In the winter months he switches inventory from lawn equipment to snow throwers and snow blowers. But whatever he sells, one thing remains constant year-round: “We love our customers,” Dambman said.

STERLING – There are so many ordinary, magical days at Sterling Rock Falls Child Care. Like the day a little boy collected a handful of sticks so he and his classmates could paint with them, or the time a fast-moving summer storm captivated a group of youngsters as they watched the rain pelt the window while the teacher spoke in a calm voice so that no one would be scared of the thunder. These and many more stories demonstrate how staff responds to the children, helping them find joy and opportunities to learn around every corner, Executive Director Chris Arnold said. “I’m so proud of my staff,” Arnold said. SPOTLIGHT | PERDUE MARINE

Making the most of your time If you wanna get a kick out of spending time on the river, let Perdue Marine do the legwork. The staff there will make sure that whatever their customers need, it’ll be smooth sailing ahead

BY MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE For Sauk Valley Media

LANARK – Seems like, when it comes to recreation, there’s just never enough time. So Hank Perdue designed his marine business to help his clients maximize their time on the water, while he and his staff handle the legwork on land. “We sell family fun,” Perdue said. Perdue bought a gas station and some boats in Freeport in 1971; that became the foundation for his family’s successful full service marine shop, Perdue Marine and Storage, where he sells and maintains new and used boats and other watercrafts, along with a full line of accessories, dock systems and lifts. His business philosophy is simple: Treat customers like family and care for their watercrafts like they were your own. That means providing excellent customer service and taking away the hassles of boat ownership, so clients can have more time to enjoy them. “You tell us when and we put it away; you give us a date and we put it in the water,” Perdue said “We sell, service, and then when you’re done with your boat, we can broker it for you.

“We do it all for you.” It’s that excellent customer service that has Perdue nearly maxing out his winter storage space, which holds more than 400 boats. Now that spring’s approaching, he’s gearing up for a busy season, and joining him in the family business are his son, Chad, who helps him run things; his wife, Ruth, who lends a hand in the office; and his daughter, Laura, a certified public accountant who manages the books. These days, their most popular craft is a pontoon, which can hold 10 to 12 people. It’s a great way for a family and friends to enjoy a day on the water, relaxing, water skiing or tubing. “It’s like a living room on the water, with a motor,” he said. A used boat can be a great way to get started in boating, he added, and Perdue Marine makes sure each one they sell is serviced and detailed before making it available for purchase. Perdue Marine counts among its many local customers Lake Carroll residents, as well as avid boaters from throughout the Chicago suburbs. PERDUE continued on D94

Synt se FA Syntose FA is a unique blend of readily available sugars, molasses, and fulvic acid, which is ideal for use on all soils and plants. Syntose FA easily incorporates into current operations, readily mixing with starter fertilizers and other key nutrients and chemistries. Benefits of Syntose FA:

• Sugars provide necessary energy to stimulate microbial life in your soil, promoting healthy soil ecology. • Fulvic acid is a natural chelating agent easily able to penetrate plant cells aiding nutrient uptake. • Easy-to-use and tank mix – no hassles trying to dissolve granular sugar sources. • Value in both soil and foliar applications. • Each pint of Syntose FA provides 1 pound of sugar. Application of sugar to crops can stimulate microbial activity and population by providing an instant source of high energy food. Active soil microbes will increase the rate that crop residues will be decomposed and turned into soil organic matter, a very important component of soil structure and health. Syntose FA will maximize the effectiveness of fertilizer. It is made to complement Feast Fertilizer to ensure that your inputs are fully utilized by crops.

A bank with boots on the ground

When you’re a financial institution in the heart of America’s farmland, it helps to have someone whose heart is in farming, just ask First State Bank’s vice president of agriculture and commercial lending

ank vice presidents don’t always wear a suit and tie. Sometimes, they wear jeans and chore boots. Take Beau Bunders. His title is vice president of agriculture and commercial lending at First State Bank in Polo, but in his heart, Bunders is a farmer. Anytime he can change into his boots and jeans and be outdoors meeting with his farm clients he’s happy. He keeps a change of clothes in his truck and prefers house calls over meetings in his office. “People like talking about operations and I’m trying to learn as much as I can,” Bunders said. Before the sun rises Bunders is up and taking care of his cattle herd on his grandparents’ farm. Then it’s back home to hit the shower and change for a full day of work at the bank –or sometimes in the fields – before it’s back home to resume his chores. It can make for long days, that’s just fine for this young executive. Though Bunders jokes he grew up in “the middle of nowhere” he had the inclination to be on the farm at a young age. As a child, he could be found climbing tractors and combines, and he enjoyed helping his neighbors, who were farmers, when he could. he curtain will rise on another fantastic season of shows this year at Timber Lake Playhouse in Mount Carroll, including a premier of a brand-new musical. Before the shows begin, crews are completing work on the facility, including updates to the bathrooms and enclosing rehearsal spaces, said Executive Director Dan Danielowski. “We’re expanding our rehearsal spaces and work spaces and winterizing so we can easily work year round,” Danielowski said. The improvements are a part of the theater’s $1.4 million capital campaign to provide for a series of upgrades and improvements during the next 5 years. The summer stock theater was established in 1961 and is the oldest continuously operating professional and resident summer stock theater company in the state. Each year it brings thousands of tourists to its shows and provides many young people theater training that will take them to larger stages throughout the country. Danielowski said recent graduates have landed on stage and are working with crews on Broadway in New York. A notable alumna includes actress Jennifer Garner, who was part of the summer stock in 1992. It is a professional, equity theater. Danielowski estimates this year he will hire around 140 people who will act, build sets, work on technical components, cook in the kitchen and run the box office. With a new season around the corner, Danielowski is excited to welcome a new crew of actors and the audiences who return year after year, as well as those who are attending their first show. Danielowski has been involved in theater since his high school days and estimates he has been involved in more than 300 productions. He’s done nearly everything from act to technical work, with the exception of costume and choreography. “It’s helpful as an executive director/producer of the show to have that background because you really know what the people in the trenches need,” Danielowski said.

SPOTLIGHT | FARMERS NATIONAL BANK

A well-balanced bank

As more people connect to a digital world, the staff at The Farmers National Bank makes it a point not to become disconnected with the people who matter the most: their customers

A

BY MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE For Sauk Valley Media

s chief executive officer of The Farmers National Bank, Don Vogel’s role goes beyond overseeing local operations. He also works with staff to provide top-rate customer service, balancing the latest technology and trends with tried and true personal service. “We want to make sure our technology is up to date, but we don’t want to neglect our customers’ needs for face-face service, because being physically present is so important,” Vogel said. “We’re in this world of digital but also physical.” Whether customers grew up in the digital age and prefer to bank with their smartphones, or would rather make weekly visits to the bank, Vogel’s staff is ready to meet their needs. This summer, Farmers National’s home branch in Prophetstown, built in 1954, will be expanded to add 5,000 square feet of work space, to meet the needs of a growing staff. In addition, the drive-up area will be upgraded. The tube system will be replaced by Integrated Teller Machines, which offer the conveniences of banking 24-7, including accessing deposits and withdrawals. ITMs allow customers to bank with ease and still be able to speak with an agent via a screen on the machine if they have questions. ITMs will be especially helpful to those who need to access their accounts after business hours, Vogel said. The bank’s core clientele are local farmers who know they can count on staff to understand the needs, responsibilities and cyclical nature of the business. Farmers National is ranked in the top 100 banks supporting agriculture, and has provided more than $300 million in farm loans. His bankers and lenders understand the unique character of farmers’ borrowing needs, whether it’s for spring plantings or buying real estate or equipment, Vogel said. Farming combines science, experience,

faith and trust in Mother Nature, and his staff understands that farming isn’t just a business passed from generation to generation, it’s a way of life. Farmers are passionate about maintaining that lifestyle while providing for their families. “They are out there doing everything in their power to pay back their loans, because they want to protect the land,” he said. Vogel has seen many changes, good and bad, over the years, and he appreciates the hard work many have put in to reignite and maintain the vibrancy of their Sauk Valley communities. Farmers National Bank is invested in supporting the needs of those maintaining the land to those studying in fields that support farming, Vogel said. “We want to make sure people in rural America have what they need to make it a great place to live.”

or the staff at Heritage Square, an award-winning independent senior living center in Dixon, it’s important to go beyond the basics to provide for each resident’s well-being. “We want to make every day better with the little things,” said Bonnie O’Connell, facility administrator. It doesn’t take long for new residents to regain a sense of independence and choices, without the burdens of worrying about who can drive them to the grocery store or doctor appointments, or getting help with the cooking and cleaning. Residents find they have less to worry about and more opportunities for recreation, and hobbies, and making friends – which is as simple as walking down the hall or finding company at meal time.
