The breadth and depth of the services these and dozens of other charitable organizations provide to the Sauk Valley’s most vulnerable is at the same time astonishing, and humbling.

How fortunate we are to have so many devoted, dedicated agencies and individuals willing to work so hard to care for us all.

And how fortunate we are to have so many businesses willing to open their pocketbooks, roll up their sleeves and donate time, materials, and advertising dollars to support those endeavors.

Welcome to our first edition of Sauk Valley’s Charity of Choice, a publication that celebrates local nonprofits service groups, and the businesses that stand behind them.

The Next Picture Show (TNPS) is a community fine arts center located in downtown Dixon, Illinois. In 2003, this vintage 1854 building (7,700 sq. feet) underwent complete restoration recreating the 1898 facade look and retaining the original wood floors, tin ceiling, and internal structures where possible.

Upon entering TNPS, you will experience the ever changing artwork from the best talent in the area. Savor the works of oil, or the thought provoking sculptures, and stand for a moment as you observe the breath taking photography in the main gallery.

The lower level of the gallery is used for art workshops, classes, special exhibits (including student art exhibits), and meetings.

What makes a successful WHOA volunteer? Reliability, flexibility and a desire to learn and help others. No previous experience with horses or disabled individuals is necessary to become a volunteer.

WHOA does ask that volunteers be over the age of 14 and that new volunteers attend Volunteer Training to become acquainted with the program, horses, staff and their volunteer position.

Whiteside Area Career Center CEO Program

Entrepreneurship education seeks to prepare people, especially youth, to be responsible, enterprising individuals who become entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial thinkers and contribute to economic development and sustainable communities. The CEO program is much more than a textbook course. Rather, students are immersed in real life learning experiences with the opportunity to take risks, manage the results, and learn from the outcomes.

CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities) is a one year course offered to a junior or senior student that acquaints students with the knowledge and skills necessary to own and operate their own businesses. Concepts such as supply and demand, cost/benefit analysis, competitive advantages, and opportunity recognition are covered.

Coursework includes innovative thinking strategies, product development, business structure, marketing, financial strategies, record keeping, and preparing an income statement, balance sheet, income and cash flow statements.

Entrepreneurial thinking (out-of-the box problem solving) is utilized throughout the course. This course will take place in area businesses, and will include tours of local industry and guest speaker from all areas of business.

The United Way of Whiteside County formed a committee and approached the River Bend Food Bank to see whether the area needed a food bank of its own.

From there, the Sauk Valley Foodbank started with a card table, a desk lamp, paper and pencil, and two pallets of food donated by the United Way of Sterling-Rock Falls (now the United Way of Whiteside County).

From those two pallets, the food bank has gone to handle more than 2 million pounds of food a year.

It doesn’t provide food directly to those in need, but to pantries and other agencies. Any 501(c)3 group that gives away food can buy from the food bank, which pays 7 cents per pound for the food and sells it to the groups for 18 cents per pound.

Walmart Supply Chain in Sterling IL has been a significant donator to the Sauk Valley Food Bank since 2006, along with other area businesses such as Selmi’s Greenhouse and Farm Market in Rock Falls, Mitchell Melons in Tampico, and Blue Freedom Farm Market Inc. in Sterling.

The food bank was started in 2001, after the closure of Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., Lawrence Brothers, and National Manufacturing increased demands on local food pantries.

When you participate in Walk, your fundraising dollars fuel our mission, and your participation in the event helps to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in your community. The Alzheimer’s Association provides free, easy-to-use tools and staff support to help participants reach their fundraising goal. While there is no fee to register, we encourage participants to fundraise in order to contribute to the cause and raise awareness.

Where do the funds go?

All funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer’s further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. The Alzheimer’s Association is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. All donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Do I have to register in order to Walk?

Yes, we want to know you’re walking with us and need every walker to sign a standard waiver through their official registration. There is no registration fee for Walk. However, we ask every walker to make a personal donation and commit to raising funds in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

Do I need to register my children for Walk?

Yes, children should register. Parents/guardians can register children online or complete an offline registration form and sign the waiver on behalf of the child

We need volunteers!

Know anyone who might be interested in helping us on the day of the event? We need volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, registration, water stops, promise garden, the T-shirt tent and so much more. All interested volunteers should visit our volunteer page for more information about event day roles and responsibilities.

How do I get a Promise Garden flower?

On Walk day, you will receive a wristband. Each registered walker with a wristband will receive a Promise Garden flower. Please choose the color that best represents your connection to the disease.

• Blue represents someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia • Purple is for someone who has lost a loved one to the disease.

Safe Passage - Opiate Addiction Program Are you addicted to heroin or other opioids? Do you know someone who is?

It’s time to get help!

The Dixon Police Department and Lee County Sheriff’s Department have a revolutionary new policing program aimed at getting people suffering from addiction the help they need, instead of putting them in handcuffs.

Lee County is changing the way they handle addicts who request help with their addiction to opiates such as Morphine, Heroin, Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Percocet and Percodan and Hydrocodone as found in Vicodin.

Any Lee County resident who enters the police station or sheriff’s department and asks for help with their addiction to opiates will be placed into appropriate treatment.

The Safe Passage Initiative was created to help heroin and opiate addicts get into recovery. If you need help or know someone who needs help into recovery from addiction, you just need to come to one of the stations and ask for it. We are here to help with the steps towards recovery. There will be some paperwork that needs to be completed and then you will be paired with a volunteer who will help guide you through the process.

We have partnered with treatment centers to ensure that our patients receive the care and treatment they deserve - not in days or weeks, but immediately.

You can bring drugs or drug paraphernalia with you to the police or sheriff’s department. We will dispose of it for you. You will not be arrested. You will not be charged with a crime. You will not be jailed.

You will be directed to treatment.

All you have to do is come to the police station or sheriff’s department and ask for help.

We are here to do just that.

Community Christmas for Children We Help Make Children’s Dreams Come True!

Community Christmas for Children began 30 years ago at Northwestern Steel and Wire, and is still going strong today. In 2018, we helped over 100 families and 300 children. We have Santas that are in charge of buying clothing and toys for kids truly in need. The Santas spend $50 per child. During the second week of December, the Santas go to the Sauk Valley Area Food Bank, where they get a week’s worth of food, including milk, eggs, meat, etc., along with the gifts for the children. Then they personally deliver the gifts to the families. The Santas who participate do it because they feel it is really rewarding. That’s why we have had a lot of the same Santas since the organization started.

Several years ago, there was a child whose Christmas wish was to receive$150 Nike gym shoes. We really wanted to be able to give him those shoes because it was something he dreamed of having. We talked to the manager of JCPenney, and they ended up giving us the difference, so we could make his Christmas the best one yet! Stories like that are the reason we do what we do year after year.

Dixon PADS Homeless Shelter

NIGHT WITHOUT A HOME FUNDRAISER

Saturday November 23rd

Since 1990 Dixon PADS strives to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of men, women and children who have found themselves homeless in our community. On Saturday November 23rd, Dixon PADS will be hosting their annual Night Without a Home fundraiser. This event is in conjunction with National Homeless Awareness week.

PADS is looking for groups, organizations and individuals to participate in this event. The goal is to spend the day collecting pledges. The participant in your group with the least amount of pledge money by 6pm will have to spend the Night Without A Home. Participants staying out will be provided with a cardboard box, dinner, campfire, breakfast, and a t-shirt.

Festivities will begin at 6pm at the shelter with tours of the facility, campfire, hot dogs, smore’s and fellowship.
