Shining Star Children’s Advocacy Center. Sauk Valley Food Bank. Safe Passage. Team Jess. Trinity Cares. The breadth and depth of the services these and dozens of other charitable organizations provide to the Sauk Valley’s most vulnerable is at the same time astonishing, and humbling. How fortunate we are to have so many devoted, dedicated agencies and individuals willing to work so hard to care for us all. And how fortunate we are to have so many businesses willing to open their pocketbooks, roll up their sleeves and donate time, materials, and advertising dollars to support those endeavors. Welcome to our special edition of Sauk Valley’s Charity of Choice, a publication that celebrates local nonprofits service groups, and the businesses that stand behind them. You may be familiar with some of them. Some may be new to you. We hope you read about them all, are inspired by their missions, and lend your support to them, and to the businesses that sponsored each writeup of their Charity of Choice.

CEO is a one-year course offered to juniors and seniors from high schools that feed into the Whiteside Area Career Center. Unlike other courses, students meet off campus in local businesses. Throughout the year, they visit approximately 40 businesses and have about the same number of professionals visit class and cover a variety of topics. Students dress business casual and drive each day to the location arranged by their facilitator (teacher). Immersing students in the business world, surrounded by professionals who teach the content, gives them the opportunity to see their community in a totally different light. Students are also responsible to work as a team to create a class business project and turn a profit. That money is used as seed money for each to start their own business and showcase it at a spring trade show. The entire program is financed by the business community and other investors, meaning local high schools do not pay tuition for students to attend CEO. The business community is key in providing not only financial support, but also provide business tours, speakers, mentors, class meeting sites, and more. This amazing program simply wouldn’t exist without their support. Proudly, the WACC CEO program now has two sections, which operate predominantly out of Sterling and Dixon. This helps cut drive time for many students, since the geographic region of WACC is quite large. CEO is a dual credit course through Sauk Valley Community College.

Charity is at the heart of our work and our faith — and it always has been. For the Knights of Columbus, charity means supporting a virtually boundless variety of projects. HISTORY & HERITAGE: Founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity, the Knights of Columbus was established in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Conn., and a group of parishioners. Their intent? To bring financial aid and assistance to the sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Today, Father McGivney is being considered for sainthood. DONATIONS: One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to support the Knights of Columbus charitable cause of your choice. All fees and expenses associated with Knights of Columbus Charities, such as operating and administration costs, are covered by the Knights of Columbus. Whatever cause you contribute to — providing a child the gift of warmth, advocating for a culture of life, giving persecuted religious minorities food and medical care or helping rebuild after natural disasters — every penny you donate goes directly to your chosen charity. Together, we will make a difference. This is our path and our faith leads the way. PROGRAMS: Special Olympics Leave No Neighbor Behind Fund (people affected by COVID-19) The Virgil C. and Ann L. 17 We are reaching out to you today because our community needs our help. The impact of coronavirus is unfathomable. Many families, senior citizens, people with disabilities and children depend on our support to avoid hunger during this challenging time. This is America – the greatest agricultural nation in the world. Now, more than ever, we must work together to reduce the suffering our communities face in the weeks ahead. Right now, food banks across the country face drastic reductions in their donations. With limited supplies available, food providers are battling the impact of substantial cuts in traditional donations from grocery stores and restaurants. Additionally, changes in the food pantry operations now require boxes, gas, and additional resources. With the thousands of Americans currently out of work -- many will be forced to tap into these food banks for essentials. That means there is a crucial need for financial support. Many people in our communities are employed in positions where they are unable to work remotely. They face limited paid time off and cannot afford high costs associated with seeing a doctor or going to the hospital. Hours are being cut and layoffs are growing as businesses close. With school closures impacting thousands of young people across the region, there is a growing need to provide more meals for children. So, what can we do? In an effort to raise money for food banks desperate for assistance, The Sterling Rail is now accepting grain donations. The money raised from these donations will be immediately reallocated to food banks within the Sauk Valley and Northern Illinois region. Donations of any bushel size will go any extraordinary length in making sure every member of our community can withstand the weight of this crisis. One of the greatest feelings is knowing we can make a difference. We all take pride in our ability as farmers to feed this country and our communities. Right now, they need our help like never before. Please, donate what you can. Everything little bit matters! Thank you for your kindness!
All grain donations to the Sterling Rail can be delivered under “Food Bank” Sterling Rail Hours Monday - Friday 7-4 Elevator Hours Monday - Friday 7 - 4

(MS) When choosing to donate to or volunteer with a charity, adults know that their choice of charity is an important decision. Many charities rely on volunteers and donations from private citizens to meet their missions, which only illustrates the vital role such men and women play in making the world a better place. Many people would love to volunteer with or donate to every charity whose missions they support. However, time and budget constraints often prevent well-meaning men and women from supporting more than a handful of charities. Though it’s not easy to choose one worthwhile cause at the expense of another, men and women who want to pitch in can take certain steps to simplify the process of choosing a charity.
• Choose a cause you feel strongly about. Adults who support organizations whose missions they feel strongly about will likely be more inclined to continue working with or donating to those organizations than those who choose charities based on a whim. Consistent volunteering and donations, whether they’re made on a monthly or annual basis, can help charities build more effective budgets, thereby supporting both their short- and long-term programs and goals. • Don’t overlook local charities. Overseas charities that help underprivileged people in developing countries are often great choices when choosing a charity. But donors should not hesitate to look into local charities in their
own communities as well. By supporting local charities, donors can help members of their own community. A successful local nonprofit benefits the local economy by creating jobs and also helps the greater community by assisting the underprivileged in the area. In addition, donors may feel a greater sense of satisfaction when seeing how their volunteering efforts or donations are helping to transform their own communities. Choosing a charity to support is a decision that should be made after careful consideration of a host of factors. Tips for choosing a charity
• Do your research. One of the best ways to narrow down your list is to access charity ratings and reviews through organizations such as Charity Navigator and Give.org. Such organizations vet charities based on various criteria, including the effectiveness of their programs and how donation dollars are spent. Donors may feel more comfortable donating to charities that have well-established reputations for making every donation dollar go as far as possible, while volunteers may feel more connected to a cause if they can experience firsthand just how big a difference their efforts are making.
