A hardtack, a biscuit often eaten by Civil War soldiers during long missions, was placed by the new marker for Compton soldier Alonzo Webster at Fisk Cemetery. The marker replaces the original which, had fallen into disrepair.

COMPTON – Nestled in the middle of what was once called Little Megulin’s Grove is a small cemetery named for a family that lived nearby. Fisk Cemetery sits off of Fisk Road in eastern Lee County, about a mile north of where John M. Fisk settled during the Civil War. No Fisks are around that stretch of road anymore, but every now and again Jerry Fisk will make the nearly 300-mile trip from his home Osage, Iowa, to pay a visit. His great-great-grandfather, Robert Fisk, was married to Emiline Webster, whose older brother, Alonzo, served for the Union cause. For years, only Jerry and a select few knew of Jerry Alonzo and his final resting place at the cemetery. Fisk his exact whereabouts were unknown. However, That all changed this year, and on Oct. 26 a new stone was put in place to honor the veteran who served in Battery G of the Second Illinois Light Artillery regiment. The 2-foot granite stone serves as one of Viola Township’s most visible links to the Civil War. “He wasn’t here all too long prior to his enlisting in the Union,” Fisk said. Alonzo was born in 1837 in Augustana, Ontario, Canada, the son of Samuel and Caroline Fisk. His mother was originally from Scotland, emigrated to Canada at 9 years old, and came to Lee County in 1855. He was part of a large household, Fisk said, and settled about 1 mile east of the cemetery in Willow Creek Township. Webster otherwise stayed in the area, save his years in the service. One of the first ships to land on invasion day off Omaha Beach during the Battle of Normandy was under the leadership of Dixon’s native sons. Lt. A. Bradley Moll served as an executive officer and later commanding officer of the USS PC-552, a control vessel that screened for the Normandy battle fleet and protected numerous convoys during World War II. Moll, a friend of former President Ronald Reagan, is featured in David Cary’s new book, “Normandy: A Father’s Ship and a Son’s Curiosity,” which details the ship’s journey. Cary’s father-in-law, Nick Stine, served on the ship and was one of its last living crew members. While second in command of the U.S. Navy ship on D-Day, Moll recounted in letter to his parents the “orange balls of flame” from the guns on Omaha Beach. Those letters were printed in the Dixon Evening Telegraph and featured in the book.

“Our beach was the toughest of all. Mortars were bursting all over the boys. Finally got our men on the beach and things improved,” Moll said in a letter published Aug. 19, 1944. In the letter, he speaks about the onslaught of firing from cruisers, battleships, destroyers, gunboats, and planes while “we had drowning men all around us so we’re maneuvering to avoid the fire and pick up those poor devils.” “Funny thing about this war business, you are so busy and so much is happening and everyone is so tense, you do things you never imagined you could do. Somehow it seems that you are not in it and all this is happening to someone else.” While Moll and the crew protected convoys, Moll’s twin brother, Lt. H. Graydon Moll, was fighting in the South Pacific. “The Moll brothers were well

known and well liked about Dixon, and big things were expected of them,” according to the book. “While Lt. Bradley Moll was fighting the Nazis in Europe, Lt. Graydon Moll was fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific as a naval officer of the 27th Bombardment Squadron.” Both earned English degrees from the University of Illinois, and knew Reagan. “The Moll brothers and Reagan knew one another well, and Reagan liked to tell a humorous story about a mishap Lt. Bradley Moll had while dropping a depth charge,” according to the book. Moll boarded the USS PC-552 in March 1943, left in January 1945 and was home by March. He married Winnie Knapp in 1950, and he died of service-related complications after a boating accident in 1964. Cary, a Vietnam-era infantry sergeant who grew up in northern California and lives in Dallas, spent 2 years researching the ship, its crew members and their experiences to write the book.

VETERANS DAY | THINGS TO DO

Following is a list of Veterans Day ceremonies and services throughout the Sauk Valley. All events are on Monday unless otherwise indicated.

Amboy Amboy Elementary School will have a community-wide program at 10 a.m. at Amboy High School, 11 E. Holly St. A speaker will give a presentation, and the colors will be presented. The Amboy School Districtwide Band will perform, and elementary students will sing. Call Joyce Schamberger at 815-973-4691 for more information.

Ashton

Chadwick Chadwick Elementary School will have a breakfast for veterans and their spouses at 7:40 a.m. at the school, 15 School St. Reservations are requested at 815-684-5191. A Veterans Day program begins at 8:15 a.m. in the school gym. The colors will be presented, and there will be a speaker.

American Legion Post 12, VFW Post and the Dixon Marine Corps League will have a service at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 668 state Route 2. The speaker will be Army Sgt. Maj. William Lafferty, retired, of Dixon. The Marine Corps League will give a rifle salute. The colors will be presented. The Rev. Keith Romke of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon will give the opening and closing prayer. At noon, Post 12 will have an open house and luncheon at the hall, 1120 W. First St. VFW Post 540 also will have an open house with a free lunch starting at noon at 1560 state Route 38. The band Burn â€˜N Bush will play.

Forreston The Forreston American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will serve a free veterans appreciation luncheon at noon Sunday at First Lutheran Church, 402 S. Second Ave. The meal will include burgers, brats, hot dogs, trimmings, side dishes and a beverage.

Franklin Grove A program to honor veterans will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Franklin Grove Elementary School, 217 S. Elm St. The colors will be presented, and elementary school children and the high school choir

Lanark The Lanark Legion and VFWâ€™s annual supper for veterans and their spouses begins at 6 p.m. today at the Heritage Center, 106 S. Broad St. Meat, vegetables, and beverages will be provided; bring a salad or dessert to pass and your own table service. There will be a guest speaker, door prizes and a 50-50 drawing. A Veterans Day patriotic salute begins at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Lanark United Methodist Church, 405 E. Locust St. Music from the American Revolution to the present day will be performed, featuring the churchâ€™s 1890s Hinners tracker-action pipe organ. Guest organist Steve McMillen, resident organist Mildred Sturtz, and tenor soloist Jarrod Severing will be featured.

Morrison American Legion Post 228’s ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m. at Grove Hill Cemetery, 400 E. High St. Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Jerry Brearton will speak, and there will be a rifle salute and taps.

Oregon The Oregon VFW’s Veterans Day observance begins at 11 a.m. under the large American flag on the east side of Conover Square, 201 N. Fourth St. Veterans will provide a 21-gun salute and play taps. The Oregon High School Madrigal choir will sing, and Hector’s Cocina will provide free coffee and Mexican hot chocolate. Beth Wolber of Oregon will speak on behalf of her son, who is deployed to the Middle East. A potluck meal will be served at noon at the VFW, 1310 W. Washington St.

STERLING – The Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society will host “The Journey To Mollie’s War: WACs and WWII” at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Learning Center, 611 E. Third St. Cyndee Schaffer, whose mother, Mollie Weinstein Schaffer, was a member of the Women’s Army Corps, will discuss her mother’s service and the Corps’ role in World War II. WAC members were the first women other than nurses to serve overseas in the war, and have been described as the unsung heroes of the war. Schaffer collaborated with her 91-year-old mother to write the book, “Mollie’s War,” which uses excerpts from her mother’s letters home during the war to help provide a glimpse into the life of women in uniform during a crucial time in history. Though it could prove to be a challenge, organizers would like to see an Honor Flight just for women get off the ground – that is, if enough of them can be found for a plane ride to see landmarks and memorials in Washington, D.C. The Quad Cities Honor Flight Hub is seeking women who served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam for an all-woman flight, Hub President Steve Garrington said earlier this year. “We certainly would like every female who has been in the service during Vietnam, during Korea, to get in touch with

us to get them on a flight,” Garrington said. Finding enough women to make it happen is a challenge. Most flights carry up to 100 veterans, but only have a couple of servicewomen, if that. Garrington said interested women could choose to hold off on upcoming flights until the all-woman one materializes, but it’s more likely that something closer to a half-and-half flight – with an even mix of men and women – would be possible. Though they’re far and few between, all-female flights have been done before; the first was organized in 2015 out of Cincinnati and a few others have followed, Garrington said.

How to take an Honor Flight

Honor Flight is a national nonprofit network with 131 hubs in 45 states, including Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, which serves veterans within a 75-mile radius. The program sends World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans on a 1-day, jampacked trip to D.C., to explore all the war memorials and other attractions, while giving them the star treatment. All veterans are not only welcome, but deserving – even those who did not see combat. The flights, all funded by donations, are free to all veterans, who are accompanied by volunteer guardians who pay their own way and help the veterans throughout the day. Whiteside County Honor Flight launched in summer 2009, and in the last decade, has taken about 4,000 veterans to the nation’s capital. The Lee County Honor Flight chapter was founded a year later. The local chapters are affiliates of Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, and the flights leave from and return to Quad City International Airport in Moline.

Applications are available from the two local chapters, and veterans can sign up at any time. Priority is given to World War II and Korean War veterans, and to those who are terminally ill. By the time the plane, bus, fuel and other fees are taken into account, each flight costs about $80,000. Volunteers build memorial, brick by brick, to honor Illinois soldiers who lost their lives in Mideast MARSEILLES – Joshua Terando and Staff Sgt. Lincoln Hollinsaid are not forgotten. Nor are the 245 others from Illinois who died in Iraq or Afghanistan who will be memorialized with an engraved brick in the Illinois Fallen Soldier Surround of Honor in Marseilles. With temperatures dipping into the 30s and daylight fading Oc.t 29 at Illini State Park, volunteers Bob, Mason and Carrie Flatness, Paige Whalen and David Raikes cut and laid engraved bricks. They continued into the night under the light of a mercury vapor light. It had been 6,049 days since Lincoln died in action April 7, 2003, in Iraq, and 5,101 days since Joshua died on Nov. 10, 2005. But the dedication of volunteers are what keep Joshua’s parents, Jerry and Jeannie of Morris, as well as Lincoln’s parents, Dan and Nancy of Malden, going. They keep Joshua’s and Lincoln’s memory alive. The Hollinsaids and Terandos were invited to view the progress on the memorial and lay their sons’ bricks. “It’s totally awesome and inspiring the extent people are willing to go through and the time to make sure they are not forgotten,” Jerry said.
