ll the world may be a stage, but for Random Tanner, Clinton has a starring role.

It’s where the up-and-coming musician got his start, where he honed his talent, and where he learned to flex the musical muscles that helped lift him up when he was down. It’s where Tanner Skiff was born — and reborn, as Random Tanner.

But don’t let the name fool you. His career has been anything but random. He’s spent years fine-tuning the motor that keeps him running, fueled by a passion for exploration. It’s been hard work, a dedication to his craft, and a love of music — all kinds of music.

RANDOM cont’d from page 6 Skiff’s newest song, “Another Lie,” is a pop-rap blend about being in a relationship gone bad, marred by dishonesty. It’s a situation he’s seen others in, and he hopes that his music will help them navigate through those troubled waters.

“I really like to make music about stuff that people have a hard time going through and dealing with,” Skiff said.

“They can have something to relate to.”

Having committed to making music while in high school, Skiff, now 32, has spent enough time on the local music scene to see his fair share of ups and downs, but things are definitely more on the upswing these days.

He’s learned a lot about perception, too, and those lessons have formed a musical maturity that’s helped him evolve as an artist — and it’s opened more doors, too.

Though some rappers pepper their songs with just about any bleeping word they can think of, Skiff has moved beyond that, and it’s helped him attract a wider audience.

When he cleaned up the lyrics, he found that more local

venues and attractions would welcome him to their stage.

While he doesn’t necessarily look back with regret at lyrics that sometimes took the low road, he definitely enjoys the view from the high road.

“It was a lot of inappropriate music, partying music, stuff like that,” Skiff said of his younger days. “It was fun when I was younger, and it was cool to perform, but it just wasn’t fulfilling, I guess. I always wanted to make music that would make people feel a certain way other than just partying, you know. I’m older now and have four kids, so I wanted to be a good example for them, too, and not be someone people can’t look up to. I wanted to really change that around.

“I try to do everything good that I can though music. I think that’s what I was meant to do.”

The young man who started fresh out of high school as a rapper named Skeez will soon take Random Tanner to the Five Flags Arena in Dubuque on Oct. 23, bringing some new songs to his established set that features a blend of rap and country.

Like any singer who performs live, Tanner feeds off the crowd’s energy — in fact, it’s what helped kick-start his musical career. "The response was great,” he said of his first live show in 2007. “That's probably what made me want to keep going. That first show, I was nervous.

RANDOM cont’d from page 7 “There are a lot of great country venues, and it’s a really great marketing point to tell people that it’s not just rap; it’s a little country, too,” Skiff said.

“It’s going well. I’m just trying to be creative and do as many shows as we can, keep going, keep learning new things and keep trying to check things off of the bucket list.

“Doing music and being creative, you have to continue to feed off whatever energy you can get. It’s what keeps the motor going.”

Growing up, Skiff dreamed of hitting homeruns on the baseball diamond, and even suited up for the Clinton Riverkings baseball program in high school.

But his interest in rap continued to grow, and came to a point where he found himself performing in front of his peers one day — and that was the dinger that launched Skiff in the direction he’d take in life.

That first show in February of 2007, at the Clinton Moose Lodge, saw 300 people take in Skiff ’s musical talents.

“The response was great, and that’s probably what made me want to keep going,” Skiff said. “That first show, I was nervous. But it became a kickstarter and I thought maybe I actually want to do this stuff.”

Riding on that newfound musical momentum, Skiff wanted to take his talents to the college level at a media arts institution in Florida after high school. However, that plan changed after the birth of his first child, so he stayed home and eventually hooked up with a few other locals with the same musical interests and started performing with them on occasion as Inside Out Entertainment.

RANDOM cont’d from page 9 As with any path that life can take you down, sometimes it can lead you to a rough road. After going through a breakup, Skiff felt disconnected from music. He knew he had to plug back in and get back on his feet. He needed a change.

Enter, Random Tanner.

“I was like, I didn’t know if I wanted to make music anymore, it just wasn’t fun,” Skiff said. “It wasn’t fulfilling and I was like, ‘What am I doing?’ It was starting to get depressing in a sense, for me personally. I needed to figure something out. I didn’t want to leave music because I love music.”

As Skiff began to rebuild himself, he decided to do it on a foundation he was already familiar with: himself.

He wanted to be the same guy on stage as he was in person, something that didn’t always happen as Skeez. The big change, however, came when he cleaned up his act, and his lyrics. He knew it would make a big difference for him personally, but he was surprised at the effect it had on his career. “It’s crazy how many doors have opened,” he said.

One favorite local event of his was the rap battle he took part in at Clinton Middle School’s “Coins for Clinton” fundraiser last year. Skeez likely wouldn’t have been part of that, but Random Tanner was, and it proved to be popular with the kids, he said.

VH1 pioneered the Pop-Up Video, but Tanner did one better: He had a Pop-The-Question Video. During the filming of “Here for You,” a song Tanner and Morrison’s Alex Fischbach collaborated on, Tanner proposed to his girlfriend, Liz Sanquist, seen here in an image from the video.

RANDOM cont’d from page 10 “It’s created so many opportunities that I never thought I’d have as a hip-hop artist,” Skiff said. “Every day I think to myself that I cannot believe I’m in this position right now doing what I do.”

Skiff tries to put out a song and music video every month.

He writes and then records at his home studio and has a friend mix it to its final form, and then hires a crew to film the video, which usually has scenes in and around Clinton.

Having control of his destiny is important to Skiff, and that’s why he enjoys staying close to home in Clinton, where he’s now graduated to performing in front of thousands at places such as NelsonCorp Field – where he’s hitting homeruns with his music.

As much as he enjoys performing in his hometown, he occasionally take his show on the road to different spots around the nation. While most of his gigs are in Iowa, he’s played in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Colorado.

“It’s nice to get out,” he said. “I know it sounds weird, but I’ve done a lot of big city stuff and nothing compares to community stuff, for me, here,” Skiff said. “I love being able to help people [here], and going to a new city, it’s like starting over every single time. It isn’t a bad thing, and we try to do that every now and again.”

“If I took this and tried to go to L.A. or Chicago, you’re just diving into a huge sea of everybody doing the same thing,” Skiff

said. “Here, I’ve built this for so long and everybody knows me, and I have venues that work with me that probably never would have worked with me before. It’s been so much work and so much investment that I’ve put in here. It’s working, I’m growing, and I’m going to continue working on this.”

A marriage of sights and sounds The music videos also proved to be an important part of Skiff’s life. He collaborated with fellow musician Alex Fischbach of Morrison for “Here For You,” a song about love and relationships. During filming on Dec. 9, 2018, Skiff asked his girlfriend, Liz Sanquist, to be part of the video. It took a little bit of persuading, but it was all worth it – considering that Sanquist now has a starring role in Skiff’s life.

During the final take of the video, Skiff proposed to her.

“It was the last shot. I was freaking out and shaking so bad,” Skiff said. “I was so nervous.”

Did she say yes? Well, the video came out without a hook, so that should answer that question.

Skiff attributes all of success to his four children and his fiance.

“My kids are the motivation to be the type of artist that I am,” Skiff said. “My fiance really helped me. Living on your own compared to having a partner who’s like 50-50 in life with you, she’s motivated me, she’s helped me organize myself in all aspects, and she allows me to do the shows and is supportive and always proud.”

He’s collaborated with several artists on recent songs, with Fischbach being perhaps the most notable local partner in song, having performed on the 14th season of “American Idol.” Upon hearing of him through the TV show, Skiff contacted him and asked if he wanted to work together. One of their first songs was “Back When We Were Kids,” a tribute to a friend of Skiff’s who had recently passed.

Working with Fischbach, and utilizing a new style of music, the message from “Back When We Were Kids” helped others see him as more than just a rap artist.

“That was the song that did all of this stuff for me,” Skiff said. “Where the older people who said, ‘I don’t listen to rap,’ kept saying, ‘I really love this song. You reached to me, and I don’t listen to music but you reached me.’”

It’s compliments like that help drive Skiff to keep seeing where his music will lead him, exploring new genres and bringing them into his work.

“A lot of the older crowd that watches some of the videos, they’ll tell me, ‘I’m not going to lie: I don’t listen to this music but I actually really like the song,’” Skiff said. “I get that a lot. It’s actually one of my favorite compliments — ‘I don’t like rap but I really like this.’ That’s one of the best compliments, because I know the stereotype that rap has, especially with older people. They assume it’s all the same.”

He has a channel on YouTube that features several of his songs, and for those who want to see where his musical journey started, there’s even some tunes from back when he was Skeez.

“This world is such a visual-based world,” Skiff said. “People need to see you on YouTube or TikTok, and they want to see videos. I wanted to do a video for every song.”

For those who’d rather push “play” than click it, he has a CD, the 14-track “Fast Forward” (pictured, at right) from 2019, that’s available at randomtanner.com. The album’s release party at the Rock Island Brewing Company attracted a sold-out crowd.

His music has also made it to local radio stations and he’s even had some airplay on Eminem’s Shade 45 music channel on Sirius XM.

A musical journey to ‘everywhere’

These days, music that Skiff didn’t tune into much while listening to the radio growing up are now some of his biggest influences; acts such as Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind — a long way from listening to loops of Eminem and dying his hair blonde to be like him.

His melding of musical styles range from country-rap, poprap, and even a mix of punk and rap — akin to well-known rapper Machine Gun Kelly’s recent songs.

One way he’s growing is to rise to the challenge of being self-employed.

He used to work at Gateway Supply where he delivered janitorial equipment. He said they were a generous employer who even let him use one of their vans for a music video. But after the business closed recently, Skiff decided that he didn’t want any other job other than to be his own boss and control his own destiny.

“It’s going well,” Skiff said. “I’m surviving. I’m alive.

That’s where we’re at right now. I’m self-employed — I just wrote that somewhere recently and it felt so weird.”

Skiff has opened for larger acts before. He opened for Nelly in Rock Island in September 2019, and nearly had another date with him recently at the Rhythm Section Amphitheater — a new outdoor venue in Mount Carroll — but it wasn’t in the cards.

Nelly is one of those artists that Skiff likes to follow in order to bring his act to fans of the longtime hip-hop artist, known for his “Country Grammar” album from 2000.

“Every time Nelly comes to town, I like to know, because his crowd is the type of crowd that’s really supportive. It’s an older crowd, but still kind of young. They want to buy ‘merch’ and koozies for all of the beers they are drinking. I really do think about all of that, and try to line up with the right shows.”

When it comes to merch, he knows his stuff. Fans can hook up with all sorts of Random Tanner merchandise at his website: clothes, hands, koozies, window decals, sunglasses, and more — even face masks.

Skiff has been booked nearly every weekend since April, sometimes performing in 3-day stretches, and it’s the closest he’s come to having a semblance of an actual tour, which is a big goal of his he hopes to make a reality soon.

He will open at Five Flags for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Twista, and Do or Die. After that, who knows where the next venue will be, but one thing is for certain: Clinton will always be near and dear to Skiff’s heart.

“It’s been half of my life now; it’s crazy,” Skiff said.

“Within the last 3 to 4 years, I really figured out who I wanted to be as a person within my music, and it’s worked out really well.”

hen a group of Fulton folks set out on a mission to enrich their community, they asked themselves: What’s the best way to help residents lend — and get — a helping hand?

The answer: Come up with a familiar face that will be recognized as a leader in improving the quality of life and building community spirit.

The solution would become the Fulton Association for Community Enrichment, a foundation by the people, for the people that’s been giving back to its community for nearly 15 years through grants, funds and endowments.

And the best part about it? The people who support the group are the people who benefit the most from it: the people who call the Fulton community home.

FACE cont’d from page 17 Jeanine Tufty, chairwoman of FACE, is a firm believer in the benefits of giving back to the community. She’s especially proud of contributions to education, which is near and dear to her, having been a college psychiatric nursing instructor for 20 years.

“I enjoy seeing the benefits we provide to the community,” Tufty said. “Whether it’s large-print books for the library, or things to benefit the Windmill Cultural Center — and a good share of the grants go to the [Fulton] school district for STEM-tech programs or for the school library, or for milk money for children who can’t afford lunch.

“For a large part of it, it feels like you’re helping. You can see the benefits of it.”

Fellow board member and local businesswoman Heidi Kolk echoed Tufty’s sentiments.

“I’ve enjoyed serving on the board because I’ve been able to interact with board members that maybe I wouldn’t have necessarily known in the past,” Kolk said. “I’m amazed at how talented our board members are, and how much knowledge they have. It’s almost humbling.”

FACE cont’d from page 18 The mission of FACE is “to serve as a philanthropic leader, catalyst and resource to improve the quality of life and build community spirit through permanent endowments and other charitable funds.” In doing so, the association helps people, businesses and organizations in Fulton, or those in nearby communities where projects or services directly benefit Fulton, by supporting causes that matter to them. The association is run by a seven-person board that includes both Kolk and Tufty, along with community members Garry Medema, Connie Koehn, Rhea Kraft, Marsha Norman and Bill Wilkin. As many as nine people can serve.

The association originally started as a project of the Fulton Chamber of Commerce, which saw a need for a such a foundation run by community-minded residents.

“They saw that local money was going to other organizations outside of the community because there wasn’t an easy way to give money to the community, or to organizations in the community,” Kolk said. “The group that started it decided that, if we made it easy for people to give to the community, they could do that and that’s where they would put their money and their legacy.”

In keeping with that goal, helping the community is only a mouse click away, at fultonface.org, where people can select from the list of “Funds created by and for the people of Fulton” and give a one-time donation, or set up a recurring donation.

People can also start the process of setting up their own charitable fund through FACE. The association runs three of its own endowments: The Fulton Gardens Grant, in memory of Gerhart A. Kopf, supports public garden areas in the community; the FACE Community Impact grants; and the D.S. Flikkema Fund.

The D.S. Flikkema fund is the largest endowment: Since it was established in 2008, it has awarded nearly $750,000 in grants, provided in perpetuity, to the Fulton area and scholarships to Fulton High School graduates. Flikkema, a Fulton native, was a chemist with the Argonne National Laboratory and a chemistry professor at Iowa State University. He also worked in research departments during World War II. Through Community Impact grants, the association supports local projects and fulfills the needs of the Fulton commu-

nity. In years past, these grants have assisted local endeavors such as an observation beehive at the Andresen Nature Center, the start of an Advanced Placement chemistry class at Fulton High School; and assisted with funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring, the Kiwanis Club’s Needy Families for Christmas Fun, and the purchase of Rosetta Stone foreign language programs for the town library.

In 2020, the association received $40,280 in gifts, had $2,668,685 in assets in community foundation management, 27 funds, and awarded $97,210 in community support grants, and $2,900 in Community Impact Fund grants. Since it started nearly 15 years ago, it’s given millions back to the community.

Another way of making it easier for people to help: FACE will accept any of several different kinds of donations: cash, of course, but also real estate, marketable securities, closely-held corporations, personal property, grain futures, IRA and 401(k) plans, life insurance, charitable annuities and remainder trusts.

The association will work with donors to discuss goals and how to direct donations. If people want to put a contribution into their will, they can do that, too.

Even with all the assistance that FACE offers, Tufty said many in the community still don’t know about the association.

She and the rest of the board invite more people to learn more about giving back to the community.

The association is an affiliate arm of the larger Quad Cities Community Foundation, and is one of six that also includes foundations based in Morrison, Mount Carroll and Geneseo in Illinois, and Cedar and Van Buren counties in Iowa.

The work done in Fulton is extremely impressive to their parent organization in the Quad Cities. Kelly Thompson, QCCF’s vice president of grant-making and community initiatives, said their passion and love for everything they do inspires others to do the same.

“They are engaged community members and leaders, who bring their own experience and perspectives to the way FACE can serve the community,” Thompson said. “That includes helping people who care about Fulton find a way to give back through donating to or creating a fund that benefits causes in Fulton. It also includes offering grants that help local nonprofit organizations serve the people of Fulton and help keep it a wonderful place to live.”

Having something such as this is important for Fulton, Kolk said.

“If we want to have the community supported, if we want to allow people to leave a legacy, we have to have this foundation,” she said. “That’s why it’s special to me. We have to have an outlet for local people and local money.”

One of the association’s memorable endeavors recently was

the “Love Someone, Love Fulton” initiative. Donors contributed to the association’s Community Impact Fund in honor of a loved one, or anyone else they wanted to honor, as a “tribute for any reason under the sun.” Donations of $25 or more were recognized through a display at the association’s public display area downtown at the Masonic Lodge’s front window. The initiative raised more than $11,000 through donations and a $5,000 matching grant from the D.S. Flikkema Foundation.

The display also highlights information about the association’s mission, as well as honoring the people whose names are associated with the funds and grants and their contributions to the community. Passersby can read about local philanthropists such as Flikkema, Ray and Frances Rus, Ike and Mettie Klavenga, Leonard and Maxine Martin, Hannah Schmaling (who the town’s library is named for), Kathryn and James Zimmerman, and John L. Poole.

The association will observe its 15th anniversary next year.

To celebrate, FACE is offering help to highlight other endowments in Fulton and shine a brighter light on them through print and electronic assistance.

The giving spirit continues to exist very strong to this day, both in the amount of money donated and in the number of people who give their time to help make endeavors such as FACE shine bright in the community.

“In the past, a lot of this was done through the churches,” Kolk said. “That’s changing a little bit now, and they want to give to organizations, and schools — and to FACE, which covers the whole community.”

ou won’t find John Lepper and Alexander Thompson in any high school history books.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t have something to teach us. Their story is America’s story: the tale of a generation tempered by war whose fight for freedom helped forge a nation.

It’s also a story with chapters — albeit short ones — in both Clinton County and Whiteside County.

Lepper and Thompson were two of the more than 230,000 British subjects who decided they were fed up with the tyranny of King George III and fought for American independence in the Revolutionary War.

VETERANS cont’d from page 23 This newspaper article from the Mason City Globe Gazette reported on John Lepper’s efforts to get his grandfather, whom he shared a name with, the recognition he deserved for his role in the Revolutionary War. It wasn’t until 1941 when Lepper and the DeWitt chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution located his grandfather's burial site.

As the area around the upper Mississippi River opened up for White settlement by the 1830s, it was territory rife with potential, where farmers could tame the land and start a new life. Like their fellow frontiersmen, Lepper and Thompson came to the area, but their stays did not last long. Lepper is the only Revolutionary War soldier buried in Clinton County, and Thompson the only one buried in Whiteside County. No image of either exists, be it painting or photograph, but their story lives on, long after they drew their last breath.

If it wasn’t for a grandson who sought to keep his grandfather’s legacy alive, John Lepper likely would have been forgotten.

After he died in 1840, Lepper was buried in a small plot with only a few other graves in the woods northwest of DeWitt, but the exact location of his final resting place was lost to time. By the turn of the century, whatever stone marked his site was gone. It wasn’t until 1941 when Lepper’s grandson and the DeWitt chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution located the burial site; they exhumed the body and it was given another burial at Elmwood Cemetery on the north edge of town, complete with a government-issued headstone.

VETERANS cont’d from page 24 Lepper was born in either 1765 or 1766 at Tribe’s Hill, in the former Tryon County in upper New York. He was the third generation of his family to settle in the Colonies; his grandfather emigrated from Germany in 1710.

At 15, Lepper volunteered to serve in a company of the New York Militia as a substitute for John Devou, later pension application records show. He stood watch over Forts Herkimer and Plain, and patrolled the area near the Mohawk Nation boundaries. Lepper served for 2 1/2 months in this capacity, and volunteered again in April 1781 in another company in the same militia.

The second stint turned out to be the most memorable in terms of seeing action. According to testimony on Lepper’s pension application in 1832: “While on this tour of service, we had a battle with the British near Johnstown — Col. Willet commanded the Americans amounting to about 400 men. Major Ross commanded the British, what supposedly amounted to 600 men. Six men out of our company were killed. We took 21 prisoners and as they (the British) retreated the same night we pursued them next day at Canada Creek. We took them and fired upon them.”

Lepper’s companies would again engage in the occasional skirmish with the British until his honorable discharge in January of 1783.

He had 12 children from two marriages, and several of them set out to settle in the eastern Iowa Territory when Black Hawk’s Sac tribe retreated toward the Wisconsin border with the Mis-

sissippi River in 1832. After a brief stay in Pennsylvania, Lepper moved closer to his children a few years after the Black Hawk War ended. He arrived in Davenport in early 1840, and then made his way north toward the area where his children lived.

If it wasn’t for issues regarding homesteading rights — details which are lost to history — Lepper would have been Lyons’, and later Clinton’s, personal link to the American Revolution. The first place Lepper sought out was land about 3 miles north of Lyons, but it didn’t pan out.

Lepper eventually settled north of DeWitt, but his stay didn’t last long. He died on Aug. 17, 1840, of “fever and ague” (ague is defined as malaria or some other illness involving fever and shivering), according to his grandson, and was buried on a knoll near his residence, where his remains stayed until they were moved to Elmwood Cemetery.

The cemetery along Old U.S. 61 is where some of Lepper’s children are also buried. Lepper’s stone is near the northern edge of the cemetery, about 20 stones over from the halfway area of the north driveway.

Thompson’s journey to the area happened right about the same time as Lepper’s, but he didn’t make the trek across the Mighty Mississippi. Reaching as far west as Albany, Thompson later settled on a family farm southeast of town and died only a year after coming to Illinois.

Alexander Thompson, a CODY CUTTER/CCUTTER@SAUKVALLEY.COM private from Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War, is the only colonial patriot to make a home in Whiteside County, a few miles southeast of Albany. He is buried in Kingsbury Cemetery, across the road from his family's farmland.

A government-issued headstone replaced the original one, a piece of white sandstone that broke at some point. Only the top half was saved and mounted atop a new marker. The now-defunct Morrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution commemorated the new stone in 1967.

Born on Sept. 3, 1758, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg, Thompson enlisted for 2 months starting in August 1776 under Capt. Alexander Laughlin and Col. William Clark in Pennsylvania. He had another 2-month tour of duty under those same officers beginning in December 1776. Unlike the other colonies early in the war, Pennsylvania, with its Quaker-ruled governmental structure, did not form militia-like armies, but rather were grouped based on territory within a military association. (Pennsylvania eventually adopted a militia format in 1777.)

Nothing is known of Thompson’s service as far as any skirmishes are concerned during either of his tours of duty, but during his second stint, he was sure to have heard the news of one of the war’s key battles, one that was launched from the shores of his home state.

and Gaulrapp roads, southeast of Albany. Thompson’s gravesite is along the main path past the front gate, near the two trees in the rear of the cemetery. His original gravestone, a thin, rectangular slab of white sandstone, broke at some point, and only the top half was saved. The site later received a governmentissued headstone with his service information and date of death, and it was commemorated with an ornament from the Morrison Chapter of the DAR on Sept. 13, 1967.

The Thompson family’s military legacy continued nearly 90 years after Alexander’s service. Thompson’s grandson, Robert Kennedy Thompson, the son of Hugh and Jane Thompson, didn’t survive his tour during the Civil War. He died at 19 or 20 years old from wounds received at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, in 1862. Robert served in Company B of the 75th Illinois Regiment. He also is buried in Kingsbury.

The creek that runs north of the Thompsons’ settlement is named after the family. It originates near the corner of Frog Pond and Rock roads and runs into improved ditches going south toward Hillsdale in Rock Island County and into the Rock River.

While their time in the River City area was short, Lepper and Thompson’s story is timeless, and their resting places serve as a testament to their place in history: two men who were part of a generation that fought for independence, and who came west to find a home in a nation that would someday stretch from sea to shining sea.

An important turning point in the war took place on Dec. 25 and 26, 1776, when Gen. George Washington and fellow future president Lt. James Monroe led a surprise attack on British-allied German forces by crossing the Delaware River from Pennsylvania by boat — an image recreated on Emanuel Leutze’s famous painting — and defeated the enemy in Trenton, New Jersey.

Thompson lived in Pennsylvania for several years after his military service. He married the former Sarah Scroggs on March 11, 1800, and they had 11 children. As land west of the Appalachian Mountains became available for settlement in the early 19th century, Thompson, his wife, six of their children, and a son-in-law ventured west toward the Mississippi River to find a new home. After a grueling 5 months, and dealing with the death of one of their boys along the way, the Thompsons made it to Albany in October of 1839, according to Helen Hanson’s book, “Trailways to Albany.”

Adam Stallnaker, who had settled on land southeast of Albany for 3 years, sold his property to Thompson and Samuel Miller, the husband of Thompson’s daughter, Rachel. The 80-acre property was across the road from Kingsbury Cemetery, where the Revolutionary War veteran would be buried after his death on Sept. 25, 1840.

The levee walkway spans 2.5 miles along the Mississippi River from near the Gateway Bridge to the former landing of the old Lyons-Fulton High Bridge. The lighthouse markers (seen from above in the clue photos) denote each halfmile along the path.

The photo clue was a look up at the cables on the The Gateway Bridge, which carries U.S. Route 30 over the Mississippi River. The 2-lane suspension bridge opened in 1956.
