Gary Geahos has been working with stained glass for more than 40 years, but he still has one of the first pieces he made, seen here, which he displays at his Lake Carroll home.

ary Geahos is an artist who knows the score. That’s how he makes his magic happen. With glass cutter in hand, he transforms pieces of glass into pieces of art that are more than just a window into his own mind, they’re a window into people’s homes. Geahos, 77, has been making colorful creations out of stained glass for more than 40 years, and today he does it from his Lake Carroll home — “It’s where I do all my magic,” he said — crafting pieces that end up in windows and around doors, on lights and atop lamps, even on tables, where his candle holders and other smaller pieces can be found. Retired and a recent arrival at the lake, having lived here for 2 years, Geahos is enjoying his time scoring and cutting glass and then piecing it together, or bending and molding it into various shapes, bringing together a rainbow of colors into glass patchworks of art.

It’s a hobby that not only bring together his talents with happy customers, it brings family together, especially during the holidays when he’s worked with his daughter, Faye. December at the Geahos Home for many years was a special time for Gary and young Faye to bond and work together on their stained glass creations. “It turned into a tradition,” Gary said. “Everybody would say, ‘What are you going to do this year for Christmas?’ But they just had to wait and see.” He’s also been around the world – from Vietnam, where he served during the Vietnam War, to Spain, where his son, Christopher lives – and it’s helped influence some of his designs. “I like the freelance aspect of it,” Geahos said of his work. “My son and daughter have told me that I should open a store, but I don’t want an inventory or a store, to have employees and go through all of that stuff. It’s a hobby, but sometimes bursts make it a job.”

Creating stained glass pieces takes time, and even though he’s seen an uptick in business since retirement, he likes to keep the work small enough so that it seems less like a job and more like a hobby. Larger creations, such as Tiffany-style lamps, can take up to 3 months. Sometimes they have a design drawn up, and other times he does the design work. “I talk with them, I get ideas from them and I’ll put rough sketches on paper,” he said. “I tell all of my customers the same thing: You have to live with this and you’re going to see this every day,” he said. “I don’t want anything to be a point of contention. “Out in the country, you see a lot of farm houses, and they all had transoms in the front windows it seemed,” Geahos said. “Depending on the lighting, either at night with the light coming out, or the sun shining in and reflecting, I kind of got interested in it. I liked the colors. I thought it was kind of cool.” After more than a decade into adulthood, Geahos rediscovered Geahos has his fascination with stained glass creworked on many of ations when a glass store in the northpieces through the years, but this west suburbs offered a class on it. With both, he enjoys incorporating the Prairie School method into his work, a design popularized by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. They not only give the doorway a pleasing aesthetic, he said, but also afford some privacy. Geahos consults with clients on each design before starting the work, asking questions and drafting designs. Some have a design drawn up, while others are inspired by drawings or photos, but need Geahos’s talents to turn their ideas into reality. “I talk with them, I get ideas from them and I’ll put rough sketches on paper,” Geahos said. “Sometimes they’ll say, ‘Yeah, but not quite,’ and we’ll work on it. I tell all of my customers the same thing: You have to live with this and you’re going to see this every day,” he said. “I make it, install it, and go home. I don’t want anything to be a point of contention. Tell me what you like and don’t like, and we’ll work around it.” Stained glass isn’t just simple glass with a color to it: There are different textures, from smooth to rough, and different color patterns, such as water glass with ripple-like lines inside it. Some are scored and cut differently than others.

“You’ve got different types of glass, and they break differently. When you’re doing a project, you’re not really cutting the glass, you’re scoring it [with a cutter], and you’re giving it a path to follow. Sometimes depending on how it cracks, sometimes you’ll have some shards that can be smoothed with a grinder.” Taffeta glass, for example, has wavy lines to give a sense of flowing motion. “Taffeta is a real nice background glass,” Geahos said. “I like to keep them because on a regular full sheet, if you lay your pattern down properly, you can cut the pieces out and keep the flow of the glass. It’s really nice.” He also likes working with beveled glass, where the glass angles down around the edges. He likes the light show glasses like this can put on. “You’ll be walking across the room and you’ll see little rainbows all over,” he said. “It really looks cool.” Some of Geahos’ more than 100 different works are memorable enough to be worth keeping, and Geahos still has the very first work he did, with influence from that glass store studio: It’s a piece 2 feet wide by 1 foot tall with two layers of ambertinted rectangle glass pieces along the edges, and

yellow flower-like pieces in the middle. The symmetrical piece has an inner amber layer of dark glass that blends with the brown wood frame, and a lighter outer layer that plays off the color of background. Another piece is dedicated to a good friend of his, 2nd Lt. William Howard Hunt, who was killed in action at Quang Tri during the Vietnam War. That piece is near and dear to the Geahos Family. The middle piece of glass features Hunt’s name in it, crafted from an etching made on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. Faye went there on an eighth-grade school trip and did what many visitors to the wall do: use a pencil and sheet of paper to make a relief impression of names on the wall. “He was a typical quiet, soft-spoken, easygoing southern gentleman,” Geahos.0 recalled. Geahos also served a tour in Vietnam in the late 1960s. After graduating with a business degree from the University of Northern Colorado, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps and served overseas as an artillery officer. After the Marines, he worked as a ticket agent at O’Hare International Airport and eventually started a family.

His son, Christopher, lives in Malaga, Spain, and works as a language instructor. His home is about a 2-to-3-hour train ride from Barcelona, home of the Sagrada Familia “Gaudi” basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The yet-to-be-completed church, which started construction more than 100 years ago, is a place Geahos plans to visit when it’s finally completed so he can take in its stained glass windows, which he only has seen from the outside. Geahos and his partner, Barb Marchesky, are going to Spain next year and he plans to get advance tickets to see the basillica. “It’s amazing. Geahos and his studio have moved through the years, but he said he’s happy to call Lake Carroll home, where he has a living room view of the lake. He’s even found a place at the Lake to showcase his creations, at Lake Carroll’s farmers markets outside Plumtree Lodge during select Saturdays in the summer. There, he’s gotten to know many of his fellow lake residents. “I like talking with people and creating a design — drawing a design out of a person,” Geahos said. “There’s a story behind every piece. The pattern will never repeat. As you’re talking with people, you get a gist of what it is that they’re looking for. Then you come up with an idea, and they say, ‘Yeah!’ That’s an ‘A-ha!’ moment. That’s good. That’s really great.”

pair of Lake Carroll residents have a pretty strong link to the game they love to play. They live on a golf course. So it should come as no surprise that Casey Fritz and Diane Schipkowski have become pretty fair on the fairways, managing to notch up some wins in Lake Carroll’s premier two-day golf event, the Club Championship, in years past. This year, they did it again, etching their names in the record books by adding another win during the event held Aug. 21-22. Fritz, 26, who won the championship in 2018, shot the best round of all participants in the event’s second day. After finishing Day 1 with an 83, with a he roared back 74 the next day to finish with a 157. Fritz’s score was two strokes better than runner-up Matt Heinrich, who finished with a 78 on Day 1 and an 81 the following day. Chad Johnson (81-80) and Jake Thomas (78-83) tied for third place. Schipkowski, 61, had already notched up a number of wins in the event coming into this year, and added another victory in a nine-player women’s field with a net score of 143. She fired a 72 on Day 1 and a 71 the following day. In women’s play, a net score is the number of strokes subtracted by one’s handicap (Schipkowski’s was 19 at the time). She won the women’s championship last year in the seniors event and kept her winning streak going. She finished one stroke better than defending champion Sheri Moutrey, and two strokes better than third-place finisher Barb Anderson. LL: Casey, it had to be a “tale of two days” for you, right? CF: It certainly was. On Day 1 I shot a 36 and then a 47, so I had a little bit of a blowup round. I knew that if I could shoot what I did in the first round, I could come back and be in it. I had a little more concentration the whole day. LL: Diane, you had a 72 and then a 71. Any difference in your play in the second day from the first day? DS: I was happy with how I played. I played pretty much to my handicap and I was really happy about that. It came down to the wire and it really came down to the final hole. With the girls I played with, Sheri Moutrey and Barb Anderson, there was a one stroke difference between each of us. LL: What do you like and enjoy about golf? CF: It’s a sport anybody can play. I can go out and have a good time. I can take it seriously, or as leisurely as I like. I live on the course, so it’s easy to play off of No. 1 one or No. 2. It’s just nice to be out in nature.

DS: I love being outside. I love nature and being out in the outdoors, and enjoy the exercise, socialization, and it’s something I can do with my husband [Alan]. It’s something that we can do together. LL: What do you like about the Lake Carroll golf course, compared to others? CF: I enjoy the Lake Carroll course because they always put a lot of work and time into maintaining it. It’s not a links-style, not a back-and-forth, so you get to go all around. That makes it more of an adventure. That, and the fact that I live on the course makes it pretty easy. DS: [Alan and I] love being out on the golf course. We live out on No. 18, and we picked our lot because it was on the golf course. We just enjoy golf so much. Lake Carroll has such great people. The course is in such great shape.

Hole No. 2 has been like a second home for Casey Fritz, whose first home isn’t too far from the course. “It’s just super easy and fun to play on the golf course you grew up on here at Lake Carroll,” he said. LL: With all of the other events that happen here, is any other particular event here your favorite? CF: Every club event here is fun. I wish I could get in the Ryder Cup. The Firecracker Scramble is always fun, the booster outings are fun. DS: I like the Ryder Cup, because it’s something so different. LL: Do you like doing this for fun, or for competition? CF: It’s mostly for fun, but then I do get competitive once in a while. DS: Both. I do enjoy the competitiveness and the fun, and that’s the great thing about it. You can just play for fun, or if you wanted to play competitively, you can. LL: Have you learned anything about yourself through playing golf? CF: It takes a little self-awareness to be able to keep it calm and collected. You grow a little bit when you learn not to play up your blow-up moments and just continue forward where you have to go.

Diane Shipkowski has a pretty good view from her backyard: Hole No. 18. “I love being outside,” said Diane, who’s lived at the Lake for 14 years with her husband, Alan. “I love nature and being out in the outdoors, and enjoy the exercise, socialization, and it’s something I can do with my husband.”

DS: There are a couple of things: It helps me to, no matter whether I win or lose — just play your best. You can’t take it too seriously. Just how you can’t always take yourself too seriously; you have to have fun with it. LL: You’ve had at least a couple of wins here in this event, but do you have any other favorite moments of golfing here, or anywhere else? CF: The high school golf meets. My golf coach, Jason Hill, is a good guy and he’s fun. I’ve had lessons with him for a long time. DS: We were at the Rock River Country Club for the Lincoln Highway Tournament, and that was the first time Lake Carroll played in it, and the first time I played in it. For here, it would be winning the Club Championship. LL: Do you have a favorite course you like to golf at other than Lake Carroll? CF: I go around and golf elsewhere, but it’s just super easy and fun to play on the golf course I grew up on here at Lake Carroll. LL: This year’s tournament got a larger women’s field than last year, with nine ladies

when there were just three last year. How exciting is that? DS: It’s a great turnout because normally there’s not this many. One of the gals who played [Barb Anderson] is in her 80s, and I hope I can play like she does when I’m in my 80s. LL: If you wanted to get someone interested in playing golf, what would you tell them? CF: It’s something you don’t take too seriously. You can get a bunch of friends and just have fun. DS: It’s a lifelong sport. Its something that you can use business-wise, for a personal benefit, or you can do it for fun. It’s a socialization thing. It’s just a great sport to learn and have that skill. LL: Any exercise benefits? DS: I wear a step tracker, so I can track my steps every day. You can get around 6,000 steps playing 18 holes of golf. My goal is to get 10,000 every day. LL: How often do you get out on the course? DS: I play quite a bit, maybe four times a week on average.

LL: Does it take much to be able to commit to playing in the championship? CF: The last couple of years I’ve played in a pickleball tournament instead. I used to play a lot in Sterling. LL: Casey, if you had to choose between golf or pickleball, which is your best sport? CF: That’s a tough one. I love them both evenly. I live on a golf course but have to drive 45 minutes for pickleball, but they’re both are a good, fun game. LL: Are you looking forward to defending your championship next year? he owners of a Freeport business think it’s pretty good. In fact, they think once you’ve tried it, you’ll come back for more. And just what is it? Well, “it” is It — This Is It, to be exact — a downtown eatery where you can enjoy food fresh from the farm, tastes with a local twist, and regional brews served up by a top-notch staff. Looking at the menu owners Greg and Sheila Miller have come up with, it’s easy to see why people keep coming back for more. There’s a lot to choose from: soups, sandwiches, steaks, salads, seafood, pasta, burgers, wings, and more — the kind of menu that draws people back for their favorites, or to try something new.

Located at the corner of Exchange Street and Chicago Avenue, This Is It “is a good place to come and relax,” Greg said. “It’s a good place for someone to sit down and have some wine, or some drinks. It’s quiet. There’s no dress code. People can have a good time.” As for the name, it was around before the Millers’ time as owners. When former owner Randy Skeens opened it in 2011, he declared it would be his last business venture — “This is it.” The Millers bought it in June 2017 with a partner who later got out of the business. “When he had it, he said it was going to be his last restaurant,” Greg said. “We just kept it, and it’s been quite a ride.” When they aren’t tending to This Is It, the Millers are tending to livestock on their family farm a few miles west of Freeport, which puts the restaurant in a good spot to be part of the growing farmto-table movement. In fact, if customers want to know where that steak or hamburger they just enjoyed came from, all they have to

do is take a look at the picture of the Millers’ farm hanging on the wall. It’s there that they raise cattle, corn and beans. “How many times do you see ‘locally raised beef,’ and not ‘ownerraised beef’? That’s really been a big thing” with customers, he said. The New York strip is a 16-ounce cut cooked to customers’ liking; the ribeye weighs in at 14 ounces and is marinaded in olive oil and a special house seasoning; and the sirloin steak comes in an 8-ounce cut. All three are USDA choice cuts. As far as juicy burgers go, customers can sink their teeth into a mushroom burger, onion and Swiss, black and bleu, and even a couple that will test your tolerance for heat. The Burn Out Burger is an 8-ounce patty with bacon, sautéed green peppers, American cheese, pico de gallo and an egg over easy; the Mexi Burger also is 8 ounces with southwest dressing, pico de gallo, topped with cheddar cheese. For those who want some lean green, a vegetarian patty can be swapped out for beef.

he days of summer have cooled off and fall has fallen into place. Leaves and temperatures are dropping and the cooler days ahead mean less time on the lake and more time looking for something to do when the weekends roll around. So, as you think about a change in the weather, maybe it’s time to think about a change in scenery. After all, the ride doesn’t always come before the fall; sometimes autumn is a better time to hop in the car for a day trip — and there are plenty of destinations around Lake Carroll to enjoy before the snow starts falling. As the season settles in, the trees put on a show of their true colors, roadside stands roll out the pumpkins, markets invite you to enjoy an apple a day, and haunted houses get ready to scare up some business. Whether it’s food, foliage or freaky fun, here are 10 places within an hour’s drive or so from Lake Carroll that we hope you’ll enjoy. Take a trip a day, or two or three, or spread them out — and don’t be afraid to stray from the beaten path and check out other sights along the way: main streets and country roads, destination diners, or maybe even a rummage sale along the way (who knows, you might find a treasure among the trinkets). Dittmar Farms

Tom and Genevieve Nedbal own and operate the family fruit farm near the small Carroll County community of Fairhaven. Their orchard has about 600 fruit trees with nearly 30 different varieties of apples, such as ambrosia, honey crisp, McIntosh, monarch, sunrise, red free, zestar and others. One of the orchard’s popular apples is Gen’s Best, named after Genevieve. These apples are grown on trees with scion wood grafted into them, and are large, round, juicy and have a taste between tart and sweet. The orchard hosts occasional U-pick events; check its Facebook page for up-to-date information, as the weather plays a role in what apples grow when. Also offered: honey made by their own bees, as well as donuts and apple cider.

Apple cider and additional varieties of fruit-flavored donuts are made fresh daily. Run-a-Muc Acres also has a corn maze, a go-kart course, and a honey bee wagon ride for the little kids.

The Selmis have farmed on their property east of Rock Falls for more than 100 years, and the past four generations have sold produce and more grown in their greenhouses and fields. The pumpkin patch and bi-color super sweet corn have been a popular attractions for locals and tourists alike since the 1950s, and the business has grown in recent years to include a variety of homegrown and homemade foods and plants, such as flowers, Amish salsas and honey. Also available for the children are hayrack rides on the weekends and a haunted house suitable for all ages. New this year is a giant, jumping pillow that is similar to a trampoline, as well as tug-of-war ropes. The corn maze also is an annual attraction — about 2,000 people went through it last year — and this year’s layout is extra special: The 4-acre maze is a tribute to the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Paths were shaped into a Statue of Liberty and the twin towers of the World Trade Center, with “9/11” and “Remember” running down the sides of buildings (seen in inset above).

Looking to face your fears? Visit the frightfully fun folks at Haunted Haven, which opened Sept. 24 for its 13th season. According to its Facebook page, the Haunted Haven community and creatures like to “push the boundaries of fear and sanity,” and “don’t take kindly to those that leave early due to fear.” Their show doesn’t use just sights and sounds to scare up some fun; it features scents, lights and fog to enhance the experience, with plenty of masked monsters popping up for unexpected visits. Concessions are sold and there’s an apparel stand onsite. Bonfires will help keep the lines warm and the shivers delegated to the house of horrors. Scenes from horror movies are projected at the gate, and you never know when a creature could even pop out there. Been here before? The rooms and themes change every year, so this year will bring a whole new experience — and so will next year. Can you conquer your fears once again? Admission to the 8,000-square-foot haunted attraction is $15.

Trees as far as the eyes can see create splashes of vibrant color along the landscape. You can also take a hike along any of the 11 marked trails, which combine for 15 miles throughout the park. Trails on the north end of the park are wider and less strenuous than those on the south end. Some trails take hikers to the small limestone caves below the landscape. For those who want a bit of adventure in their day, the park is one of the few in the state that allows rock climbing. And if you want to make a night out your day trip, the park has more than 200 campsites where you can sleep under the stars. South of Freeport on Baileyville Road is this 133acre park that features forests, streams and restored prairie areas. The park has 4 miles of trails, including a 1/3-mile hard-packed accessible trail, and one that meanders along Cranes Grove Creek; the largest is the 2.7-mile path that runs around the park’s perimeter. Sugar Creek also starts here and winds its way though the woods and runs southeast from the park. Parking areas, restrooms and picnic areas are available. The park also is home to a tabernacle auditorium, built in 1915. The structure recently was saved from demolition and is now undergoing restoration.

State Route 2 from Grand Detour to Rockford meanders along the Rock River — so close in some spots that the road and the river are next door natural neighbors. Grand Detour, taking its name from a bend along the river, is a village along the way that’s rich in trees, and history. The John Deere Historic Site is in the village where John Deere created the first commercially successful steel plow. Leaving Grand Detour, the road will take you under the trees, through rock formations and to Castle Rock State Park, southwest of Oregon. The route is part of both the Black Hawk State Trail from Rock Island to Rockford and Rock River Trail from Rock Island to eastern Wisconsin. Look for the recently restored Black Hawk statue across the river when heading north out of Oregon. Or, if you want, you can cross the state Route 64 bridge in Oregon and head north up River Road to visit Lowden State Park, where the statue keeps an eternal watch over the river. Lovin’ lake life! The Jones family are all in the same boat, and they couldn’t be happier. The family — Bill, Eileen, Geralyn, and their dog, Pockets — moved to Lake Carroll this year, and they’re “lovin’ lake life!” Eileen said. The family also decided to dive right in to the lake experience and bought a pontoon boat, too. “When everyone was taking their boat out of the water for the winter, we were dropping ours in for the first time. Our first time out was Labor Day weekend — can you say STRESS?! The first launch was easy enough, and with the help of some very nice people, who have since become good friends of ours, we managed to get it out of the water too!” Eileen said. “Having a boat in Lake Carroll has been a game changer for us. We get out on the water every chance we get. Unfortunately, the boat season is coming to an end, but we’ve made great friends and great memories that should sustain us until next year. Sad to say goodbye to summer, but we can’t wait to see what future adventures Lake Carroll has for us!” Eileen said the family loves reading Lake Lifestyle each month and wanted to share their experience with readers.
