ot many clubs would invite people to join by telling them that if they join up, it’ll be all downhill from here, but that pretty much sums up the mission of the Lake Carroll Ski Club.

In fact, the more things go downhill, the happier members will be – along with the rest of lake’s residents.

Lake Carroll’s Ski Hill has been around as long as the community itself, approaching 50 years, and Ski Club members are making sure their point of pride is enjoyable for all for many more years to come.

These days are pivotal for the club, with new president Jim Lass in charge and a growing mission to fix up the many features that have made the hill a downhill destination for residents. With a ski lift needing to be replaced and an indoor area seeing little activity, Lass and the Ski Club are trying to find ways to make the hill a winter hotspot once again.

So for now, it’s the club’s mission to overcome the uphill battle and keep the fundraiser, and ski hill, front and center on residents’ radar.

“Our goal is to get skiing happening here again,” Lass said. “We want to take the ski hill, once it’s up and operational, and make it more fun for everybody.”

With skiing derailed, it can be hard for the club to get much traction, Lass said, but they’ve got a good group of 80 dues-paying members, 10 of whom are especially active and are part of a board of directors. nnn The aging ski lift – built in 1980 – had broken down on more than one occasion in recent years, and failed for good 2 years ago. It was removed last year.

“It was getting very old, the top parts were getting very worn and jumping off of the track,” Lass said. “It was just kind of a pain to get it back on the track, and when people are out there skiing, you can’t just go out there with equipment and fix it.”

In the meantime, though, until the club can get a ski lift back on track, people are still heading for the hills, but they’re hopping on a tube instead of strapping on the skis.

The lake’s Tube Hill – with its 300-foot incline – is still drawing visitors, and the tube tow hasn’t suffered the same fate as the ski lift. The hill opened for the season Dec. 30 and is getting a lot of use. Right now, it’s the only way for residents to find their thrill on a hill at the lake.

There’s also a live webcam where people can watch the fun unfold on the hill, at jcwifi.com/ webcams/SkiHillLiveFeed.php Getting new gear has been a major focus for the club in recent years, and it’s taken to raising funds through both traditional and creative means.

According to a Jan. 5 post on the Club’s Facebook page, the club had about $14,000 available for the lift, but the cost of new one exceeds that amount, and the 2021 budget doesn’t include funds for the lift. That’s why the fundraisers have become so important.

Lake Carroll’s Ski Hill was first managed by an Olympic skier, Josef Melena, who represented Czechoslovakia in the 1948 Winter Games and who’s seen here in a 1973 promotional video for Lake Carroll. “Skiing is not a difficult sport at all,” he said. “If you can walk, you can ski. Take quality lessons for your safety, and you got it.”

One of the more popular fundraisers is through ticket sales for the summer slip-and-slide hill: Tube Hill is covered in tarps and a stream of water runs downhill, giving riders a place to slide and glide from the top of the hill nearly 400 feet to the bottom. So far it’s helped pay for new rental skis, but the mission to get a new lift continues.

When the first try at the slip-and-slide was done 3 years ago, Lass recalls seeing some people going up and down it for hours on end.

“The slip-and-slide was a good fundraiser because it got people onto the ski hill,” Lass said. “Most people had never really been up or down that thing. Putting in the slip-and-slide was a great idea to get everybody back in sync with what’s going on.”

Ski Hill opened in December 1972, just months after Lake Carroll opened to its first residents. It’s part of the Plumtree Resort, which includes a lodge with wide open views of the hills. The lodge at one time was just as popular as Ski Hill, and Lass hopes the new fixes to the hill will have a trickle-down effect and help breathe new life into the lodge.

The first task after this winter is to move Tube Hill from the east side of the ski area to the west side. The tube tow will be just to the east of the hill. Tube Hill currently has two lanes, and the move will open space to add two more lanes. Having it close to the lodge should make it even more popular, Lass said.

“That’s a big project to get the tubing going on here,” Lass said. “People can be sitting in the lodge, send the kids out to Tube Hill, stay in the lodge, go to the bar, have a drink … ” Getting Ski Hill back up and running will be fun for Lass, too. He laced up his first skis nearly 45 years ago as a high school student, and has made several trips to the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevadas and Wisconsin Dells. These days he’s finding his adventures at places like Chestnut Mountain in Galena and Sundown Mountain in Dubuque, Iowa – but he still has his heart set on the hills at the lake.

Skiing, Lass said, is good exercise and he enjoys the solitary serenity the lake offers.

“Just being out in the open, I can go out for an hour or 2 all on my own and I’ll be as happy as I can be out there,” Lass said. “I just love the fresh air and sliding down the hill, and being able to control where I’m going.”

Ski Club members also offer a wealth of knowledge about activity, and they can help get novices on the right track, or more experienced skiers polish their skills.

“It’s just getting used to moving your legs and getting your body coordinated to put the skis in the direction you want, and being able to turn them,” Lass said. “It just takes a little bit of practice.”

Lake Carroll is always looking for more members, and these days it’s attracting more and more younger folks, Lass said, and they want to see Ski Hill operational as soon as possible.

It’s up to the Ski Club to help make that happen.

“To me the dream is that the hill will be in use year-round,” Lass said.

Whether they hitch up and hang on to the tube tow, or take their tubes in tow and trudge back up to the top, riders have to make their way back up the hill. While going up isn’t as much fun as coming down, at least there’s something to look forward to when they get back to the top: another ride down.

You can even ask the bar owner what it was like to go to school at the Slurp N’ Burp.

Of course, it wasn’t a bar back then, and John Knoup wasn’t the owner.

The building was a schoolhouse and Knoup was one of the students who went there.

Today, Knoup, 72, of Pearl City has plenty of stories to tell – like any good bar owner does – but one of the more interesting ones is how he once sat in the corner of the school some 65 years ago as a firstgrade student, though he admits he doesn’t remember a whole lot Long before he was a bar owner, John Knoup was a student – at the school that would someday become the very bar that he owns today, the Slurp N’ Burp in Loran. “We want people to come in here happy and have someone to talk to,” Knoup said. “That’s the key, more than anything, it’s being able to communicate with people that come in here. People can come in here, and if you sit down and talk to them, you’ll love it.”

“We had the biggest class, and there were six in our class,” he said. “I remember the people I was in school with, but that’s basically not much. It was good and it was fun.”

Long after the last class was dismissed, Knoup bought the former school about 14 years ago.

The building’s history is still on display throughout the bar. The original bell, from 1906 and which weighs about 230 pounds, has been restored and proudly hangs above the bar. The original 3/8-inch thick blackboards also have been repurposed, this time with the listing of daily food and drink specials.

But beer and pub grub aren’t all you’ll find at Slurp N’ Burp. There are stories to swap, tales to tell, and bar banter to bandy about, whether it’s from regulars, the occasional pub patron or just someone passing through.

No matter who you are, the welcome mat is always out at Knoup’s bar.

“We want people to come in here happy and have someone to talk to,” Knoup said. “That’s the key, more than anything, it’s being able to communicate with people that come in here. People can come in here, and if you sit down and talk to them, you’ll love it.”

And if there are any stories that involve high school basketball, you’ll have Knoup’s undivided attention. In addition to running the bar and his previous gig working in the tool and die industry, Knoup was a prep hoops official for more than 40 years. Several big games throughout northern Illinois were played under his watch, and even more memorable moments were made in front of him, too.

Nikki Smith has tended bar at Slurp ‘N Burp for more than 10 years and enjoys the fact that each day you never know who is going to walk through the front door. “We have really great customers that come in here,� Smith said. “Because they’re so diverse, when we work here we meet so many different people. Every season here brings its own crowd. We’ve had snowmobilers, we’ve had hunters for hunting season. You meet a lot of different people. A lot of good people� – and that includes Knoup. “Nikki’s got an awesome boss,� Knoup joked.

Remembering his days as a basketball official, when there were plenty of late nights after games where Knoup and his officiating crew savored a bite to eat but couldn’t find a good place that was open, Knoup says that as long as the bar is open, the kitchen is open.

The Bison Burger had been a popular dish in recent years; the meat comes from a bison farm north of town, and people have come from “quite a ways� to have a bite, Knoup said. The Loran Burger has a touch of barbecue sauce on it. But if burgers just won’t do it, the kitchen can whip up some signature sandwiches: there’s the Sicilian deli sandwich, and Schublig on a bun.

The funny name has given plenty of people a chuckle, as has a sign on the wall, which points out that the bar isn’t just in Loran, but in “greater downtown Loran.”

“The name works. People laugh, and it’s okay,” Knoup said.

“You got to instill humor.”

Slurp N’ Burp sits across the road from an old limestone dwelling and kitty-corner from a farm. The village itself only has about 35 people within its few blocks, and one intersection is made up entirely of dirt streets.

Other tongue-in-cheek signs used to hang on the bar’s walls that had a little fun with Loran’s little size, one that read, “Loran: Poke and Plum town. Poke your head out the window and before you know it, you’re plum out of town.”

Loran may be hidden among the hills of northern Illinois, but some famous people have found it, including one who was involved with one of the biggest films of the 1990s.

The character of Forrest Gump, in the film of the same name starring Tom Hanks, was based on Sammy L. Davis, a Vietnam War veteran and Medal of Honor recipient. In the movie, the actual ceremony where Davis received his Medal of Honor is shown, with Hanks’ head digitally imposed to make it appear as if Gump is receiving the award. Smith’s wife, Dixie, grew up in Pearl City and he’s visited the area a few times.

As long as there’s a sign on state Route 73 pointing toward Loran, many people will stumble upon the Slurp ‘N Burp, and they’ll be sure to remember their visit – and the name.

“Some people from Milwaukee came in [one day] and they said they had wanted to find places to go to,” Knoup said.

“They said there were three places that they had to go in northern Illinois and see: New Diggings [in Wisconsin], The Slurp ‘N Burp and Poopy’s [a biker bar in Savanna]. So I was pretty flattered to be in that category.”

Come Feb. 22, the staff at Lake Carroll will have a new boss to work with.

Calvin White, 51, of Aurora, Colorado, has been hired as the new general manager at Lake Carroll. He replaces Dick Schwalbenberg, who left after 2 years in that position.

White has been general manager of Heather Gardens in Aurora for the past 10 years, a senior living community for people 55 and older.

A native of central Vermont, White has more than 20 years of experience working in the ski resort business, and will oversee renovations to Lake Carroll’s ski area in the next couple of years.

Lake Carroll’s rural location and resort-like features attracted White to the position.

“It’s a beautiful community and the people I have met have been extremely nice,” White said. “I come from a rural community and this opportunity lets me get back to my roots.”

White, who earned his Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA) professional designation, is no stranger to working at a large community like Lake Carroll.

Heather Gardens is a 2,400-unit facility where about 3,800 people call home. It consists of more than 35 multi-story residential buildings, 64 town homes, 4 parking structures and 252 patio homes. The senior community also has a 50,000-square-foot clubhouse, public golf course, public restaurant, community garden, RV storage lot and maintenance facilities.

“Lake Carroll is much more spread out,” White said. “I think Lake Carroll is more of a resort overall with a larger percentage of owners using the property as a place to retreat from the city life.”

Lake Carroll will observe its 50th anniversary next year, and White is looking forward to ushering in a new generation of homeowners. He sees himself as a “steward” for the community, he said.

“My main goal is to become a part of the community and to connect the operations of the property to the lifestyle of the owners,” he said. “The world is an ever-changing place and I want to see Lake Carroll continue its success as new generations of owners come about.

“The well-maintained property along with all the wonderful amenities really make the community a great place.”

What’s White’s idea of a successful community?

“I believe the people who make up the community and their willingness to adopt a lifestyle helps a community thrive,” he said.

“Not everyone likes the same things, but if everyone is willing to accept each other and work toward a common lifestyle, then the community can be successful.”

The nationwide search and hiring process, aided by executive search firm Kopplin, Kuebler and Wallace, took about 4 months and was led by the seven-member Lake Carroll resident committee of John Avampato, Robert Drawer, Tammie Farley, Rich Pehlke, Robin Saar, Jill Tepps and Wayne Ugorek.

White – whose ancestry includes former President and fellow Vermonter Calvin Coolidge – his fiancé, Charissa, her daughter Zaltana, and their two dogs and cat will move to the area soon and enjoy doing the activities they love to do, such as gardening, playing golf, skiing and hiking.

White also looks forward to dusting off the fishing reels once more and catching some fish in Illinois’ largest private lake.

“We are all very excited to explore the area and participate in all the things available to us,” White said.

The store also sells home decor, jewelry, and personal care product, but it’s the colorful stones of various shapes, sizes and colors that draws a lot of customers to the store in Woodbine, a small Jo Daviess County town of about 100 residents on U.S. Route 20, about a halfhour drive from Lake Carroll.

Staas opened Nature’s Treasure’s in January of 1999, bringing her love of gardening and crystals together under one roof.

“It’s been kind of a neat journey because many people who maybe never thought about crystals, we’ve kind of introduced them into it, just by them seeing them all over the place,” Staas said. “A lot of people just love the beauty of a beautiful rock from nature and putting it in a room.”

Staas is a master of crystology – a form of gemstone therapy designed to promote spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being in people by accessing minerals’ energy. Its proponents say that crystals act as conduits for healing, allowing positive energy to flow into the body as negative energy flows out.

She completed certified courses from the Hands of Spirit crystal workshop in Boulder, Colorado, and her certificate hangs front and center behind the cash register, so that customers can see that she knows her stuff. She’s also passing along her knowledge to Reed, who has been with her for nearly 2 years,learning about every stone in stock.

Together they’ve made many good impression on customers, and several come back for more stones for their various moods and attitudes.

“It’s a real fun place to be,” Reed said.

“A lot of the customers are just so friendly that you really become friends with them.

Being in here feels good. It’s a feel-good store with all of the good things.”

Before starting her business, Staas worked for various retail companies before taking a job with Smith and Hawken of Chicago, which specializes in organic gardening and garden products.

But the tug of small-town life called to her, and she settled in Massbach and started her store just a few miles away.

Nature’s Treasures has an array of home decor, concrete planters and gardening products, as well as organic gardening goods when the weather is nice. Candles, essentials oils and soaps also fill the shelves.

“I’ve always had an interest in crystals and gems, so we have that, and birdhouses, and everything correlating to nature,” Staas said. “We’ve grown and meandered a little bit, but for the most part we’re still nature oriented.

“I think most people when they open a business, you choose something that you love and that’s usually what your store is comprised of because you carry the knowledge of it as well.

When people ask about something, you have that knowledge to share with them.”

Tree-of-life balls (seen in the photo at right) hang near the window of Nature’s Treasures. The natural light snow beckons customers driving by on Route 20 – people have pulled in to the shop just to see all the glitters, Staas said.

The colorful, hand-blown glass ornaments come from Kitras Art Glass, Canada’s largest hot glass studio, based in Fergus, Ontario.

“They’re absolutely gorgeous,” she said. “Every one of them that comes in is different because each of them is made by a different individual.”

But it’s the stones that draw up the most chatter.

As for the store’s stones, they come from all around the world, and Staas brings them to Woodbine through an international trade show every February in Tucson, Arizona. From there, they make it to small baskets on a large shelf in the middle of the store for customers to pick out and enjoy. Small sheets are given to the customers with each stone, informing them what the stone is and what the benefits are.

The biggest stone in the store actually isn’t for sale: It’s an 80-pound rose quartz sphere. It’s places on a stand and customers can put their palms on it to promote peace and positivity.

“Rose quartz is the stone of love,” Staas said. “It just has a nice, calming, soothing energy to it. It’s so pretty that we decided it’s not for sale.”

The Earth is full of energy, Staas said, and the force of nature is channeled into stones and crystals. The composition of the minerals give off different energies. The stones can be held and meditated with, or carried around to help ease stress.

Even so, there are some people who just buy the stones for their beauty, Staas said.

“Your job may be real stressful, or you might have road rage and you need it in your car to keep you balanced,” she said.

“Everybody’s sensitivity is different. Someone’s either going to feel tingling, or hot, or cold when they hold them. The person standing right next to them could hold them and not feel a thing. Your sensitivity to energy runs on a different level.”

“It’s a favorite stone for people because it’s a stone to help you in transformation,” Staas said. “We know that 2020 was a year of transformation, whether you wanted it or not. You might have started the year off thinking you might get a different job, or were going to move or going to do whatever, or it’s going to be a different year, but it became that. That’s been a really good on in helping people assimilate the transformation instead of fighting it.”

Earth’s treasures make life better for her customers, Staas said — and they’ve helped make her life better, too.

“One of the good things about small businesses is that it’s like family. You really get to know their customers, you get to know their names, you know their families, and when they come in – when my memory’s working well – I can even address them by name. It helps promote small businesses versus the large corporations.”

According to nationalgeographic.com, bobcats – their scientific name is lynx rufus – are nocturnal animals, as well as being solitary and elusive, so they’re rarely seen by people during the day. They roam throughout much of North America and adapt well to such diverse habitats as forests, swamps, deserts, and even suburban areas. Bobcats are about twice the size of the average house cat and can weigh anywhere from 11 to 30 pounds.

They’re called bobcats because of their short tail, which looks like it’s been cut, or bobbed.

The fleet-footed felines are known as fierce hunters and can take down prey much bigger than themselves, but usually eat rabbits, birds, mice, squirrels, and other smaller game.
