ou want to relax.

Sherry and George Vidinich want to help.

The Lake Carroll husband-and-wife team are the owners of Hickory Hideaway, a 10-acre resort where guests can get kick back and relax in cabins and cottages nestled among nature’s beauty in Northwest Illinois, just outside of Lake Carroll.

The resort features walking paths, both in the shade and under the sun, a bonfire area with swinging benches, and trees of all type – the most common of which, naturally, is the hickory.

The Vidiniches bought the former Hickory Hills Lodging 17 years ago and have improved upon it to include 12 suites in three different styles.

Looking for a Country Cottage, complete with kitchen? Hickory Hideaway has four, each with a queen bed and a sofa sleeper. They are grouped in two, and each has a door that opens up into the adjoining suite, a perfect set-up for friends or family who want separate lodging.

The four Rustic Whirlpool Cottages come with a two-person whirlpool, one queen bed and one full bed, and a deck with chairs and a table overlooking nearly 5 acres of open field and woods.

The Luxury Cabins, which were built by the Vidiniches in recent years, get a lot of use, and are the largest of the three cabin types: each of the four suites also has a two-person whirlpool, a king bed, a pipe-stove fireplace and a front porch deck with chairs.

The resort’s 5 acres of woods and fields has a 1/4-mile walking trail, a creek, and “a ton” of wildlife that wanders through, so bring a camera for those pictureperfect moments with deer, owls, foxes, or the occasional bobcat or buck; visitors love to take pictures. Or maybe you’re looking for something more celestial to gaze at. The country setting and open skies are perfect for people interested in catching a peek of the Perseid meteor shower every August.

Hickory Hideaway can also host corporate meetings and retreats, or special occasions such as weddings or family reunions – one such reunion saw a family roast a lamb over the place’s fire pit.

Each weekend brings something different to the resort — new faces from different places who explore the resort, make new friends, or just enjoy the great outdoors.

On one particular weekend: “This young kid, about 14, brought out his guitar and started taking requests,” Sherry said. “So he just starts playing away, and the mom and the sister are having a blast with him – and then another customer from the back cabin brought out his harmonica, and the two of them just start having a blast by the campfire.

“The other cabin comes out, and they find out it’s their anniversary. This goes on all of the time, and it’s pretty fun.”

Seeing people gather and make memories has been an amazing feeling, Sherry said. “It makes the hard work of all of the cleaning and maintenance [worth it], and we get a lot of returning guests. It makes us feel valued.”

The Vidiniches moved to Lake Carroll full-time from the Chicago suburbs after their children went to college. They had been part-time residents for years before, and worked in property management when they acquired Hickory Hills, which opened in 1996.

“We get a lot of people from all over,” Sherry said. “We get a lot of Lake Carroll people that own property, but don’t own a place. We get overflow.

We get a lot of people from a couple of hours away, from Iowa, Wisconsin and southern Illinois, and the ‘burbs, of course. They come to get out of Dodge, to get out of a ‘concrete jungle with cement walls’ and noise.

“Especially this year, giving a people a place where they feel safe.”

Like most everyplace else in the hospitality industry, the COVID-19 pandemic created a nightmare for reservations and meetings during the initial months of the pandemic: cancellations skyrocketed, corporate retreats were called off, and the future became uncertain. However, after awhile, many people wanted to get away from the bustling city where the spread was perhaps at its greatest, and many flocked to remote areas, with the Hideaway’s homes away from home seeing more use.

By the time Memorial Day came around last year, the Vidiniches’ phone was ringing off the hook and they’ve been busy ever since.

The Vidiniches actively promote the local tourism scene, particularly in Carroll County, but they also promote places a short drive away. Whether it’s the sights and destinations that recently made Savanna one of USA Today’s “10 Best Small Towns for Adventure,” businesses along the brick streets of downtown Mount Carroll, or an array of rural adventures, Sherry, who serves on the county’s tourism committee, and George are plugged into what to do and where to do it. When people reserve a cabin, the Vidiniches email them a list of links to local sites and businesses.

“We have a lot of people that will come to the river and kayak, or go to the wineries or breweries,” Sherry said. “[I like it] when people go out and about to explore the county, and tell people about what there is out here.”

The Vidiniches have customers that have been coming for 17 years, and they’re now friends.

“People leave here better than when they got here,” Vidinich said. “They’re relaxed and appreciate the memories.”

ost surgeons want to see their patients out of the woods — but not Lant Huntley. As far as he’s concerned, that’s the best place for them.

Something else Huntley doesn’t have in common with other doctors? He makes house calls. He has to. It’d be hard to fit a 30-foot patient in his office.

Huntley is a certified arborist – a tree surgeon whose job it is to get the root of the problem, and for more than 40 years, that’s what he’s been doing, whether its treating aches in pains in the limbs or even a potentially crippling disease.

About 10 years ago, Huntley built a modern log cabin to serve as a rustic classroom where he can teach people about trees and the many maladies that can afflict them. This past year, though, classes haven’t been in session due to the ongoing pandemic.

He’s the owner of Huntley Horticulture Service and he’s a man who knows his trees. He should: He’s got a lot of experience under his belt and harness, and at 82 years young, he’s as busy as he’s ever been. He’s juggling a workload that sometimes keeps him on the road 7 days a week, traveling throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin – he’s certified in both states — to tend to and diagnose tree issues of all types.

Taking care of trees not only involves tools of the trade, but a detailed plan and approach.

“I find out what’s wrong with them, and what I can do to help, then I go out and practice that,” Huntley said. “That’s my responsibility, too. I don’t just go places and inject their trees. I better tell them how to take care of them.”

This year, he’s been doling out a lot of advice as a drought takes its toll on trees. It’s the worst drought he’s seen since 1988, when yards were covered in brown throughout all of July and August. While lawn irrigation techniques have improved over the last 30 years, the same cannot be said for trees, and it’s made Huntley’s work more needed than ever.

This year is a “severe drought,” Huntley said, a point he’s been driving home with every client he sees.

“What most people need to realize,” Huntley said, “is those fibrous roots collect the manganese and the iron – trace elements – from the rain water, so they’re right up there close to the surface of the soil, 2 to 4 inches, to collect the moisture and the elements. What’s happening with the lack of moisture is that the tree cannot take as much moisture up, and it’s really trouble.

20 Years of Service in Lake Carroll

In her poem, “Trees,” Joyce Kilmer wrote that “I think that I shall never see, A poem lovely as a tree,” but do you know what you’re seeing when things don’t look so lovely? Below are a few signs, culled from various sources online, that may point to a sick tree. It’s by no mean complete or comprehensive, so if you think you’re tree could use a little TLC, call a professional.

“This drought is a crippler. If I walk out to almost any tree on my property, there’s dust, there’s just dry dirt.”

Last year saw a lot of moisture in the early months, and it really helped during some of the drier stretches later in the year. There wasn’t much snow at the end of last year and early this year, and thus not enough moisture in the spring.

“It’s this year’s leaf that build’s next year’s bud,” Huntley said. “If that leaf is not present, it’s not likely that bud will be present. If the leaf is only performing halfway, or a very limited amount, the bud will be a very limited amount, and the leaf next year won’t grow as much.

“I’m seeing more problems with trees, and you start to look at some of the crowns of the leaf trees, they’re wilting particularly on the southwest side, that’s because it’s so hot on that side.”

Huntley’s passion for the outdoors and trees began when he was young. Born and raised on the family farm in rural Chana, Huntley enjoyed life outdoors, tending to grain and dairy, and it’s stayed with him to this day. As an adult, he turned his attention from the farm life to the forest life and in 1978, began Huntley Horticulture Service to tend to the health of trees. He used “horticulture” in the name because he felt not many people would understand what the word “arboriculture” meant.

• Dead leaves clinging to branches of deciduous trees through the winter. On healthy trees, they should fall to the ground.

• A tree that is beginning to lean, or has bare branches on one side, may have root damage.

• Vertical cracks, or seams, on the trunk. Tree bark should be continuous without deep cracks or holes, which could be a sign of a dying tree.

• An abundance of dead wood and branches • Areas of smooth wood where bark has fallen off. In healthy trees, new bark would grow in its place.

• Small branches sprouting from the base of a tree.

• Typically trees decay from the inside out. If you see mushrooms or fungus growing on trees, that could be a sign of decay.

• Leaves should appear healthy when they are in season. Discolored leaves could be a sign of disease.

• If a tree is growing uneven, is lopsided or leaning too far, it may be a sign of damage.

• Many insects/pests prefer to live in dead, weakened, or dying hosts. If you notice pest activity, it can be a sign your tree is dying, a process that could be hastened by the added pressure of having an insect infestation.

• One way to determine whether your tree is on its last limb is a scratch test.

Use your finger or a tool to scratch the trunk or one of the tree’s twigs.

Right beneath the dry, outer layer of bark is the cambium layer. If the tree is still alive, it will be moist and green. In a dead or dying tree, it is brown and dried out.

An 1940s Jeep was once the workhorse at Huntley Woods. The classic off-roader is still used, but a newer utility vehicle takes the brunt of the work these days.

“When I go somewhere, people don’t see ‘Huntley Tree Research,’ all they see is a guy in a pickup truck, this arborist’s chest, his credentials, and that’s good enough for them.”

With people staying at home more during the pandemic, they’ve tended to notice more things about the trees around their property.

“People are home more, and are looking out their windows more,” Huntley said.

“Say I were to have an ailment or a physical malady, and I just didn't feel well at all, and someone tells me, ‘Now, run a mile. As fast as you can.’ Now I've got two problems. I, first, have the malady, and now, I have a heavy stress load on my system because I ran a mile. That's my own form of thinking about trees. If that tree is in trouble just because of maybe disease or an insect, now we put a drought on top of that — that's like running the 1 mile. Now it has two problems, it has a disease and it also has no water. It's worn out.”

“The most important thing is to water a tree underneath the entire canopy of the branches. That's where the 2- to 3-inch fiborus roots are on almost every tree. If you do that, and keep it moist — it doesn't have to be slop and wet, but it has to be moist — then you will help the tree immensely yourself.”

“If the fall, I suggest everyone fertilize their trees after Nov. 1. You get a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer — nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium — and fertilize the trees underneath the canopy, just the way you would your lawn. That way, all winter long, that nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium will go down into the soil with the freezing and thawing of the snow and the rain and the ice, and it will go into the soil and be readily adaptable for the roots to pick it up in the spring. “

The woods all around him are on a hill that overlooks much of Oregon; “It’s a beautiful view,” Huntley said.

Huntley Woods, which he’s owned for nearly 20 years, is a tree research facility, and he has several conifers that he works on to help find ways to cure their illness and prolong their lives. Several of them have canker diseases; cankers are present when there’s a discolored area on wood, and fungi enters the tree at those spots and kills the bark. Plenty of Huntley’s yard calls have revolved around canker diseases and moldy leaves that can’t be watered, photosynthesized or given enough sunlight.

About 10 years ago, Huntley built a modern log cabin to serve as a rustic classroom where he can teach people about trees, particularly the many maladies of both needle-based conifer trees and leaf-based deciduous trees.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Huntley held between one and two classes a month, but that’s been on hold for more than a year.

It’s there where Huntley can also advise people about how to properly water a tree; basically, by doing that under the whole canopy where the leaves or needles stretch out the furthest from the trunk.

“It’s a fun time for them,” Huntley said. “It’s a learning time for them, and it’s a learning time for me, because they bring me a lot of information.”

When he’s not on call, Huntley is tending to his own trees – too many to count, he said – of all shapes, sizes and types, taking bad ones down, splitting wood and using it to heat his buildings with his “Hungry Hansen” furnace.

“An old friend of mine once said to me, ‘You should heat your place with wood,’” Huntley said. “He said, ‘Try it, you’ll like it, and it’ll be a part of your life.’ I heat the whole place with wood, and it really works out really nice, but it is a lot of work.”

Back in the July 2020 issue of Lake Lifestyle, we told you about a tree that has a pretty tall tale to tell: It’s a state record holder. The eastern cottonwood in the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve earned a spot at the top of the Illinois DNR’s Big Tree Register. The tree has a circumference of 28.5 feet and tops out at 122 feet tall – about the height of a 12-story building. Want to see the tree? The preserve is at 5502 N. “I’ve always enjoyed this part of the country,” Huntley said. “Even though I went away for school, I just didn’t like being away from the rural area, and I still don’t. When I came back, I said I’d do the only thing I know well, and that’s trees.”

Another big project Huntley is working on is getting rid of the invasive species throughout his woods, particularly buckthorn and honeysuckle that are starting to crowd out the native hardwoods such as oaks, hickories and walnuts.

“The forest floor needs to have light for those plants to grow,” Huntley said. “In the absence of light, they don’t do anything.”

Sometimes its hard to look at trees during off-hours and not notice what ails them – like trying to enjoy a leisurely drive through a park and noticing a majestic oak that’s under the weather, or a weeping willow that looks sadder than usual.

Even as the years on the job pile up like logs, his passion hasn’t diminished.

“I don’t really know much about retirement, ever,” Huntley said. “I just tell myself I’ll quit when I know it’s right. I think all of us think that.”

e here at Lake Lifestyle have featured the occasional day trip in previous issues, and perhaps you’ve set aside some days to visit the many unique places that northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa have to offer.

Some of those trips have focused on specific themes, like wine shops and cheese shops, while others have taken you to some places you might not be familiar with, like a little bit of Luxemborg in Iowa, St. Donatus. In this issue, we’re launching the first of what we hope will be an ongoing series of things to do in towns closer to Lake Carroll, places you might be familiar with, but have never been to, or just passed through.

So whether you’re a part-time resident, or have lived at Lake Carroll for many years, we encourage you to get to know the area by visiting the local towns and enjoy what

all they have in store for you.

We’ll begin with Dixon, a river town that once was an Army fort during the Black Hawk War. Dixon (pop. 15,800) is the seat of Lee County and is nicknamed “Petunia City” for its summertime petunia displays, a tradition that date back to the 1960s. It even holds an annual Petunia Festival to celebrate all things Dixon.

The festival is the city’s largest and oldest and includes a parade, carnival, fireworks, music and much more.

The city is best known for being the hometown of our 40th President, Ronald Reagan who grew up there after being born in Tampico. Several other presidents visited to Dixon through the years – this includes a young Abraham Lincoln, who served during the aforementioned Black Hawk War. Founded as Ogee’s Ferry in 1828, Dixon has much to offer, including beautiful parks, historic sites and scores of activities.

on the banks of the Rock River. The riverfront area has been redeveloped in recent years and includes covered picnic table areas and a statue of Reagan on horseback.

President Reagan isn’t the only famous person to have once called Dixon home. In 1887, Charles R. Walgreen moved to town and began his career by clerking for a local drugstore while attending the former Dixon Business College. He opened his first Walgreen Drug Store in Chicago in 1902, and his second in Dixon, at 105 W. First St., in 1904. By 1939, he had about 500 stores in 39 states.

Louella Parsons, who from 1915 to about 1960 was America’s premier movie gossip columnist, also was born and raised in Dixon. She died in 1972.

Dixon is accessible from Interstate 88, just past the final westbound toll booth. After you’re done with your day trip there, you can visit any one of dozens of bars and restaurants. For eats, the city’s restaurateurs offer Thai, Italian, pub-style, global cuisine, fried chicken prepared in a piece of fastfood history, local pizza, grab-and-go grub and more. If you want a nightcap before going home, you can find sports bars, neighborhood bars, bars with outdoor seating, wine and martini bars, and more.

One of the town’s claims to fame is its connection to the late President Ronald Reagan, who was born in Tampico, and lived in Dixon as a boy.

The Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home, where he and his family lived from 1920 to 1923, became a National Historic Site in 1982 and welcomes visitors from across the U.S. In recent years, nearly 100 projects big and small have been completed at the home and neighboring visitor center. A bronze statue of Reagan stands watch over the yards he used to roam; it depicts Reagan admiring corn kernels with his hands.

The Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home

An affiliate with the Smithsonian Institution, the Northwest Northwest Territory Territory Historic Center shares plenty of local and regional history, Historic Center both rural and urban. The building was the former South Dixon School, where Ronald Reagan once attended while growing up just a few blocks away. One of the classrooms has been preserved as a look back to what the educational setting was like nearly 100 years ago.

Loveland’s museum, which visitors can enjoy free of charge, has three floors of local and regional history exhibits from prehistoric days to modern times, and includes interesting items such as Charles Walgreen’s original pharmacy equipment, and a mirror once used by Abraham Lincoln.

The building also can be rented out for public and private events; its dining room can hold up to 200 guests.

Hennepin Avenue and Lincoln Statue Drive | 815-284-1134 Online: LeeCountyHGS.org Open: Dawn to dusk The original site of Dixon’s Ferry (originally Ogee’s Ferry) once served as a fort for American soldiers during the Black Hawk War in 1832 as they fought bands led by the namesake Sac chief. Future President Abraham Lincoln was a captain of a company of soldiers who tracked down Black Hawk’s band along the Rock River. A statue of Lincoln stands at the park, and is one of only a few of him in a military uniform. Lincoln mustered out of service as a Captain mid-war and re-enlisted as a private, a rank he held when he helped bury war dead at Kellogg’s Grove, about 10 miles northwest of Lake Carroll.

The Old Settlers Cabin is operated by the Lee County Historical and Genealogical societies; it pays homage to local rural dwellings and Lincoln’s days living in them as a young adult. The cabin was built in 1894 from logs donated by local residents, and its interior is reminiscent of 19th century living. Events are held periodically; call the societies for event information.

What originally hosted orchestra and Vaudeville acts gave way to motion pictures until it closed in 1984. The theater reopened the following year and has hosted live acts since then.

Country music artist Lorrie Morgan will entertain fans on Sept. 18, and tributes to 1980s music will highlight the schedule the next 2 months, including cover bands of Van Halen (Oct. 27) and Michael Jackson (Nov. 5 and 6).

Next to the Historic Dixon Theater is a small park reminding folks of the horrors of war and the triWings of Peace umphs of peace. and Freedom Park Proudly standing tall is a 20-foot sculpture, “Wings of Peace and Freedom,” done by Nick Tanev, who immigrated to the United States from Bulgaria. Tanev donated the sculpture to the community in 1991, right when Dixon was starting to engage in a Sister Cities partnership with Dikson, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in the Russian Federation.

Also at the site is a replica of panels of the Berlin Wall, which separated East and West Germany during the height of the Cold War. he Women’s Lincoln Highway golf tournament has a storied history, and Lake Carroll recently became a part of its nearly 100-year legacy.

Lake Carroll’s golfing ladies took part in the longest running women’s golf event in the United States on July 9-10 at Rock River GAP in Rock Falls.

This is the first year that Lake Carroll brought a team to the premier northwest Illinois golf event, which had its first tee shots nearly 100 years ago, all the way back in 1923.

Abraham Lincoln isn’t the only president with a link to the highway named in his honor. A more recent chief executive also has a place in the story of the tournament — in fact, he was part of it. Ronald Reagan, who was born in Tampico, grew up in Dixon and would go on to serve two terms as America’s 40th president, caddied for the ladies golf tournament as a boy.

Reagan apparently never forgot his time as a bag-toter. According to a 2004 letter to the editor in the Quad City Times, Jan Snyder of Morrison, who played in the tournament, said that in 1983, the then-president sent a telegram to tournament players that read: “Dear Friends, Greetings to the participants in the Ladies Lincoln Highway Golf Tournament. Nancy joins me in wishing all of you the very best of luck.”

As a team, Lake Carroll finished sixth out of the nine clubs with a collective score of +37.

Other participating clubs were Deer Valley (Deer Grove), Indian Oaks (Shabbona), Kishwaukee (DeKalb), PrairieView (Byron), Prophet Hills (Prophetstown), Rock River Golf and Pool, Sunset (Mt. Morris) and Timber Creek (Dixon).

Kishwaukee came away from Day 1 with a 20-point lead over second-place Timber Creek and led by more than 40 points over all other clubs. That lead only grew in Day 2, as Kishwaukee claimed the team title with a +151. Timber Creek was second with a +106. Prophet Hills with a +68 took third.

The overall winner was Kishwaukee’s Sue Ellett, who posted matching +17s Friday and Saturday to finish +34, competing in the fourth flight.

Although it’s the 98th year of the tournament, it’s seen play in all but 2 of those years: It was rained out in 1974 and the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled last year’s event. Dixon Country Club, now Timber Creek, was the inaugural winner of the women’s portion, and Hazel Oakland of Kishwaukee was the event’s first individual winner.

The tournament is named after the historic highway that runs through the area, and also has a men’s competition that takes place about a week after the women’s event; it, too started in 1923 and is the longest continually run best-againstbogey men’s golf tournament in the nation.

Lake Carroll’s talented group of golfers looks to improve upon this year’s performance at subsequent events.

The par 72 course, originally named Rock River Country Club, hosted Lake Carroll and eight other golf clubs from throughout the region for a 2-day event with 72 holes and a best-against-bogey scoring format. One golfer from each club plays in a flight, making competition a threefolded system: contributing to a total team score, having the better personal score overall, and having the better score among participants in a flight.

Diane Schipkowski led the way for Lake Carroll. She had the team’s best score with a +16, good enough for third in the second flight, and 13th overall among 70 competitors. She finished the first day with a +8 and duplicated that score the following afternoon.

What a catch!

Justin Winski had a quite a fish tale to tell folks when he went back home to St. Louis, Missouri, after visiting friends Phil and Debbie Boniface at Lake Carroll last month. He reeled in this king-sized catch at Three Tubes on July 23. The Bonifaces’ neighbor, Bill, lent a hand — and a net, tape measure and weighing scale.
