(Metro) Reaching one’s fiftieth birthday in optimal health is an accomplishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes adhering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once individuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strategies to maintain their physical and mental well-being.
• Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phenomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sadness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no children at home overcome feelings linked to empty nest syndrome. Pets also can ensure individuals over 50 stay physically active.
• Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that memory function is improved by engagement in demanding everyday tasks. That study reported that people who learned new skills experienced greater memory improvement than people who only socialized or participated in activities that were not as cognitively engaging.
• Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors contribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals reduce their risk for falling as they advance through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s.
• Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, including individuals 50 and over. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State found that valuing friendships was a strong predictor of health and happiness among older adults. Opportunities to socialize with friends may increase as people navigate their 50s and children move out or become more independent.

In our quest for a more sustainable future, every small change counts. One area where we can make a significant impact is in the world of eyewear. Considering the immense amount of waste generated by the fashion industry, reusing frames and simply replacing the prescription lenses is a simple yet effective way to contribute to a greener planet.
Let’s explore the environmental benefits of reusing frames and why this practice is becoming increasingly popular.
1.
The fashion industry is notorious for its harmful environmental impact, and the eyewear industry is no exception. Conventional eyewear production involves the harvesting of raw materials, energy-intensive manufacturing processes, and significant packaging waste.
By utilizing existing frames and replacing the prescription lenses, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated in the eyewear industry.
2.
Creating a new pair of glasses requires the extraction of raw materials, including metals, plastics, and minerals, which contributes to deforestation, increased CO2 emissions, and the depletion of natural resources.
By reusing frames, we avoid the need for additional production and, in turn, conserve these valuable resources.
3.
From the mining of materials to the manufacturing process, eyewear production consumes vast amounts of energy. Using frames that are already in circulation significantly reduces the demand for energy-intensive manufacturing, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.
By reusing frames, we reduce the need for energy consumption, thus curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
4. AVOIDING CHEMICAL POLLUTION
The production of glasses often involves the use of hazardous
chemicals, such as dyes, resins, and adhesives. These chemicals can have detrimental effects on both the environment and human health. When we opt to reuse frames, we minimize the need for further production and, therefore, reduce the release of these harmful substances into the environment.
5.
Reusing frames promotes the concept of a circular economy, where goods are kept in circulation for as long as possible. By extending the life cycle of eyewear frames, we contribute to a more sustainable and resource-efficient system.
6.
Reusing frames not only benefits the environment but also provides significant financial advantages for consumers. By replacing only the prescription lenses, customers can save a substantial amount of money compared to buying a completely new pair of glasses.
This cost-effectiveness further promotes the accessibility of eyewear, making it more affordable for a wider range of individuals.
Many people are unaware of the benefits of reusing eyeglasses, or sometimes are even shunned for asking. Although you can purchase new glasses from UseMyFrame.com, our foundation started (and continues) to help those who want to simply reuse their existing eyeglasses.
Embracing sustainable eyewear practices, such as reusing frames and replacing prescription lenses, is an essential step towards reducing waste, conserving resources, and fighting climate change. By adopting this approach, we contribute to the preservation of our environment while still enjoying functional and stylish eyewear.
Let’s support the transition towards more eco-friendly practices to create a brighter future for both fashion and the planet.

“You will find stillness in your life when you dismiss your inner critic”- Author Unknown. Each one of us speaks to ourselves more than anyone else speaks to us. This is completely normal and ok. However, if you think about it, what we say to ourselves really and truly matters to our overall health (physical & emotional). Our brain and body believe what we tell it. So, it is vital that we learn how to speak to ourselves kindly and in a healthy manner.
From where does critical self-talk come? A few sources could be- the way your brain developed after a specific traumatic event, struggles with anxiety and depression or other mental health issues, having perfectionistic expectations, unrealistic societal expectations, or maybe hearing frequent criticism in your childhood. These are just a few examples of how our negative internal monologue can develop.
Negative self-talk can create numerous consequences, such as low self-esteem, a cycle of self-doubt, poor relationships with peers, family members, co-workers, and partners. Negative self-talk may even lead to poor health. If you think that your selftalk has reached an unhealthy level and may be interfering with connecting with people, please consider reaching out to a trained clinical therapist to seek assistance.
To get a jump start on breaking the harmful pattern, you may begin by learning to practice self-kindness & compassion, learning to meditate/pray, journaling: specifically writing positive affirmations about yourself, and using grounding techniques to stay present. The benefits of positive self-talk are amazing! It can help reduce stress, increase focus, and boost self-esteem.

Choosing to initiate hospice care for a loved one is a profound and often challenging decision. It signifies the acceptance of an approaching end of life but also opens the door to a comprehensive array of supportive services that can greatly enhance the quality of life for both patients and their families. At Rock River Hospice and Home, we provide a holistic approach to end-of-life care, going beyond just nursing to include:
• Social Workers: Expertise in managing medical paperwork and connecting families with vital resources.
• Home Health Aides: Assistance with personal care needs to ensure comfort at home.
• Comfort Medications: Effective management of pain and other symptoms to maintain the highest possible quality of life.
• Medical Equipment: Provision of essential tools, such as mechanized beds, to support home care.
• Spiritual and Emotional Support: Customized care addressing both the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families.
• Volunteers: Offering companionship for patients and respite for family caregivers.
• Grief Support: Professional counseling to guide families through the grieving process.
Understanding the Hesitation
With advances in medical technology extending life for many who face chronic or life-limiting illnesses, it’s natural for families to explore every available option before considering hospice care. Often, the hesitation stems from a misconception about what hospice represents. The term “hospice” is frequently associated with the end of hope and recovery, leading many to view it as a final step rather than a supportive service.
It’s important to understand that hospice care is not about hastening or postponing death. Instead, it’s about enhancing the quality of life during the final stages by focusing on comfort and support. Our skilled hospice team excels in pain management and provides the resources necessary to ensure patients are as comfortable and alert as they desire.
Grief does not only begin after a loved one’s death; anticipatory grief occurs in the time leading up to the loss. This form of grief can be a significant aspect of the hospice journey, affecting each family member differently. Addressing this grief is crucial, and hospice team members, including social workers, chaplains, and bereavement counselors, are trained to support families through this emotional period.
Starting hospice care earlier can provide essential support to both the patient and their family, helping to manage the emotional and practical aspects of approaching loss.
The concept of hope often needs to be redefined when considering hospice care. Rather than viewing it as an end, see it as
an opportunity to create a peaceful, supportive environment for your loved one’s final months. This time can be used to celebrate life, mend relationships, and savor precious moments together.
Research indicates that patients with terminal illnesses may experience a longer and more fulfilling life when receiving hospice care. Benefits include:
• Reduced Fatigue: Less travel to medical facilities decreases physical and emotional stress.
• Inner Peace: The focus shifts from battling a disease to achieving comfort and tranquility.
• Comfortable Setting: Care is provided at home or in a specialized hospice setting, minimizing the stress often associated with hospital environments.
The decision to start hospice care is deeply personal. It’s generally based on a doctor’s prognosis of six months or less to live, but the timing of this decision is unique to each individual and family Consider these questions to guide your decision-making:
• Do I want to continue treatments that may not improve my condition?
• Are the side effects of current treatments outweighing their benefits?
• How do I envision my final months? Am I comfortable spending this time in a hospital setting?
• Are there specific goals or milestones I wish to achieve before I die, and how would continuing treatments affect these?
At Rock River Hospice and Home, we are committed to helping you make informed decisions and providing support throughout this journey. For more information or to discuss hospice care options, please contact us at (815) 625-3858. We are here to assist you with compassion and understanding every step of the way.
(Metro) The medical field is comprised of many professionals working in concert to keep patients healthy, which involves treating any conditions that arise. Individuals may be treated by various types of doctors in their lifetime, and each is an expert in his or her field. According to Medical News Today, most physicians are categorized as primary care or specialty care.
Navigating the health care system can be confusing. Recognition of the specialties of various types of doctors can make it easier to make it through that system.
• General practitioner: Also known as a family physician, or primary care doctor, these are the doctors patients are likely to encounter most often. They care for patients during routine checkups and screening tests; provide immunizations; and manage ongoing medical conditions. GPs also may be internists, treating both common and complex illnesses.
• Pediatrician: Pediatricians specialize in the care of children from birth and up. Although there is no set age when patients will transition from a pediatrician to an
21.
• Geriatric medicine specialists: These doctors focus on treating elderly patients and the medical conditions that can develop as a person ages. Geriatric doctors work in private offices, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and some even make house calls.
• Endocrinologists: An endocrinologist is an expert in the study of the body’s hormones, says the Cleveland Clinic. They diagnose and treat many different conditions that affect the endocrine system, including diabetes, reproductive issues and thyroid conditions.
• Dermatologist: Skin, hair and nail conditions are handled by a dermatologist. Dermatologists routinely treat conditions like acne, moles, scarring, rashes, and more.
• Nephrologists: Individuals with kidney diseases as well as high blood pressure and fluid and mineral imbalances will likely see a nephrologist.
• Ophthalmologist: Although many conditions of the eye can be diagnosed and treated by optometrists, ophthalmologists are medical doctors who can treat every kind of eye condition. They also can operate on the eyes, according to WebMD.
• Oncologist: Oncologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. They have subspecialties in specific types of cancer, and also may serve as radiation oncologists, who provide radiation cancer treatments.
• Otolaryngologists: Commonly referred to as ear, nose and throat doctors, these professionals treat diseases in these areas of the body. They also treat conditions that affect the neck and respiratory system.
• Pulmonologists: Those with conditions related to breathing issues, such as pneumonia, asthma, emphysema, and lung cancer, can seek out pulmonologists. These are just some of the many different types of doctors people may visit in their lifetimes.

When it comes to vision correction, the choices can seem overwhelming. Glasses, contact lenses, and LASIK surgery all offer unique benefits, but how do you know which option is right for you?
Understanding the pros and cons of each can help you make an informed decision that fits your lifestyle, budget, and vision needs.
Glasses: The Classic Choice
PROS:
Ease of Use: Glasses are the simplest solution for correcting vision. They’re easy to put on and take off, with no direct contact with the eyes.
Fashion Statement: With countless frame styles, colors, and materials to choose from, glasses can be a reflection of your personal style.
Protection: Glasses provide a barrier between your eyes and the environment, offering protection from dust, debris, and harmful UV rays if you opt for lenses with UV protection.
Low Maintenance: Glasses don’t require daily cleaning or care beyond a quick wipe with a cloth. They also don’t need to be replaced as frequently as contacts.
CONS: Appearance: Some people may not like how they look in glasses or feel that they interfere with their overall aesthetic.
Activity Limitation: Glasses can be inconvenient during physical activities, potentially slipping, fogging up, or getting in the way.
Visual Distortion: Some people
experience peripheral vision distortion or discomfort from the weight of the glasses on their nose and ears.
Contact Lenses: A Close-to-Natural Vision Experience
PROS:
Natural Vision: Contacts sit directly on your eyes, offering a more natural field of vision without the frame obstruction that glasses can cause.
Convenience for Activities: Contacts are ideal for sports and other physical activities where glasses may be cumbersome.
Cosmetic Flexibility: Contacts allow you to change your eye color with tinted lenses or simply enjoy your natural look without frames.
CONS:
Daily Maintenance: Contacts require strict hygiene practices, including cleaning and storing them properly to avoid eye infections.
Comfort Issues: Some people find contacts uncomfortable, especially if they have dry eyes or allergies.
Replacement Costs: Contacts need to be replaced regularly, which can add up in cost over time compared to glasses.
PROS:
Permanent Vision Correction: LASIK surgery can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses or contacts, offering long-term vision improvement.
Convenience: Without the need for daily wear and care, LASIK provides a hassle-free lifestyle.
Quick Recovery: LASIK has a relatively fast recovery time, with many patients experiencing improved vision within a day or two.
CONS:
Cost: LASIK surgery is a significant upfront investment, though it may save money over time by reducing the need for glasses or contacts.
Potential Risks: As with any surgery, there are risks involved, including dry eyes, glare, or halos around lights. Although these side effects are often temporary, they can be a concern for some.
Not for Everyone: LASIK isn’t suitable for everyone. Factors like corneal thickness, age, and overall eye health can impact your eligibility for the procedure.
The best choice for you depends on several factors, including your lifestyle, budget, and personal preferences. If you’re active and prefer not to wear glasses, contacts might be a good option. However, if you’re looking for a long-term solution and are comfortable with surgery, LASIK could be worth considering. For those who prefer a simple, no-fuss solution, glasses remain a reliable and fashionable option.
It’s important to consult with an eye care professional who can assess your specific needs and help guide you towards the best choice. At UseMyFrame.com, we’re committed to helping you find the perfect vision correction solution tailored to your unique lifestyle. Whether you choose glasses, contacts, or LASIK, our team is here to support your journey to clearer vision.
(Metro) Medical professionals and researchers tout the benefits of cardiovascular exercise, often referred to as “cardio,” which various organizations note should be incorporated into any well-rounded fitness regimen. The Mayo Clinic notes the many benefits of cardio, which include increased stamina, a stronger immune system, a lower risk for chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and improved mood.
Cardiovascular workouts may not seem as intimidating as strength-training exercises that require heavy lifting, but they can still prove challenging. That’s particularly so for individuals who may feel as though their endurance levels could use some work. The Cleveland Clinic notes that cardiovascular endurance refers to how well the heart and lungs can supply the oxygen a body needs to exercise at medium- to high-intensity. That oxygen is an energy source the body utilizes to fuel cells in the tissues and muscles, which illustrates how vital cardiovascular endurance can be in relation to performance. With that in mind, individuals can consider these activities as they seek to improve their cardiovascular endurance.
• Sprint interval training (SIT): A 2107 study published in the journal Sports Medicine noted that research in the preceding decade found that sprint interval training (SIT) provided health
benefits similar to or greater than those credited to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). SIT is an umbrella term that can be used to describe various exercises, each of which involves sprinting for short bursts followed by several minutes of recovery time.
• High-intensity interval training (HIIT): The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health notes that HIIT incorporates numerous rounds of exercises that alternate between several minutes of high-intensity movements and shorter periods of low-intensity movements. The goal of the high-intensity portions is to increase the heart rate to at least 80 percent of its maximum rate.
• Additional exercises: SIT and HIIT are not the only exercises that can help individuals improve their cardiovascular endurance. The Cleveland Clinic notes that swimming, cycling, dancing, jogging, walking, jumping rope, and climbing stairs are some additional activities that can strengthen the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the body.
People of all ages can work to improve their cardiovascular endurance, though the Cleveland Clinic recommends individuals first consult their health care provider to devise a strategy that will be both safe and effective. More information about cardiovascular endurance can be found at clevelandclinic.org.

They use their knowledge of psychopharmacology to select appropriate medications, considering factors such as the patient’s specific condition, medical history, and potential side effects. They educate patients about their medications, ensuring they understand how to take them properly and what to expect.
Monitoring and Adjusting Medications: PMHNPs closely monitor patients’ responses to medications, adjusting as needed to ensure optimal efficacy and minimize adverse effects. Regular follow-up appointments allow PMHNPs to assess the effectiveness of the medication regimen and make necessary changes.
Mental Health Education: PMHNPs educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and selfcare strategies. They empower patients with knowledge, helping them understand their conditions and take an active role in their care.
Preventative Strategies: PMHNPs emphasize the importance of preventative care in mental health. This includes regular mental health check-ups, early intervention for emerging symptoms, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices such as proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management techniques.
Holistic Approach: PMHNPs consider the whole person in their care, addressing physical, emotional, social, and environmental
factors that impact mental health. This holistic approach ensures that all aspects of a patient’s well-being are considered in the treatment plan.
Collaboration with Other Healthcare Providers: PMHNPs often work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with primary care physicians, therapists, social workers, and other specialists. This integrated approach ensures comprehensive and coordinated care for patients.
Remote Mental Health Care: Many PMHNPs offer telehealth services, providing remote access to mental health care through secure video conferencing. Telehealth increases accessibility, allowing patients to receive care from the comfort of their homes, particularly beneficial for those in remote or underserved areas.
Virtual Therapy and Consultations: PMHNPs conduct virtual medication management appointments and follow-up visits. Telehealth maintains continuity of care and provides flexibility for patients with busy schedules or mobility issues.
The role of a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is multifaceted and vital to the mental health care system. PMHNPs provide comprehensive diagnostic assessments, manage medications, and preventative care. Their holistic and patientcentered approach ensures that individuals receive the support they need to manage their mental health effectively. Whether through in-person care or telehealth services, PMHNPs are dedicated to improving the mental health and overall well-being of their patients.

Graduates of KSB’s Family Medicine Residency Program gather to celebrate the programs 20th year
by Michelle Marx
A significant challenge facing healthcare organizations nationwide is recruiting and retaining skilled medical professionals in rural communities. In addition to providing topnotch patient care and services, KSB has a long history of proactively seeking out and developing the next generation of medical professionals. How? Read on to learn several ways KSB helps develop healthcare talent.
The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a federally funded program that provides health career support and education. KSB primarily focuses on job shadowing for high school and college students, the Rural Health Experience, the Preceptorship program, and AHEC Scholars. By participating in these programs, KSB offers students an edge by providing a more diversified, interprofessional experience to support motivated students’ return and work locally.
KSB University is another opportunity for interested high school students to gain a sneak peek into the lives of frontline
healthcare professionals. With a heavy emphasis on hands-on experiences, students interact with clinical educators, physicians, nurses and more in various hospital areas.
In addition, job shadowing at KSB helps college students gain familiarity with various medical specialties and environments. Special school programs like Health Jam for 5th graders further expand awareness of what it’s like to work in healthcare and the careers it offers. KSB also participates in various job fairs in the region, intending to look for skilled employees while continuing to ensure confidence in local healthcare within the community.
Once offering an on-site College of Nursing, KSB has a long tradition of providing professional healthcare training. Today, KSB partners with various healthcare professional training organizations to provide clinical sites and mentoring for future nurses, radiologists, laboratory technicians, physical therapists, physician assistants, and more.
Each summer, KSB offers the Rural Interprofessional Preceptorship Program. The
six-week, full-time shadowing opportunity allows highly motivated health profession students to learn in a real-world setting and supports learning through active and organized participation in the community. The KSB Nursing Extern Program proactively partners with the Sauk Valley Community College Nursing Program to help prepare student nurses for the future. The 10-week summer program allows student nurses to work with departmental mentoring nurses and facilitates the student’s ability to experience real-world patient care. Students gain skills in patient assessment, prioritization, team collaboration, and care provision within their scope.
Professional medical training takes time –typically 12 to 18 years or more. To become a physician, one must complete a four-year bachelor’s degree, complete prerequisite courses, and pass the Medical College Admission Test to qualify for medical school. Once in medical school, a student needs another four years or more to earn their medical degree. After medical school, a three
required, followed by obtaining state licensure. A fellowship requires more years of study if a physician decides to specialize further.
KSB Residency Programs Illuminate the Value of Rural Teaching Institutions
Residency programs benefit physicians and the community alike by providing an additional avenue for the community to receive medical care through outpatient offices, increasing access for the underserved, and providing patients with more physicians able to offer expert patient care.
Recently, KSB celebrated the Family Health Center’s 20th anniversary, representing two decades of partnership with the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford. Unique in Illinois, this accredited program aims to train physicians who recently graduated from medical school to become board-certified in family medicine.
“Two decades ago, active cooperation among administrators, academics and clinicians converged in a perfect storm, allowing this unique program to be created,” says former Program Director Timothy Appenheimer, MD. “Many successful physicians have received Family Medicine
training in Dixon and served the Dixon community after graduation. It is highly unusual for a graduate medical education program to succeed in a small community like ours over time. This success is a testament to the early developers’ vision and the skill and commitment of those who continue to bring the program forward.”
The program’s success speaks for itself. Of the 28 graduates, 75% now work in rural areas. Six work for KSB, eight remain in Illinois, three work in the Midwest, and three have completed fellowships (additional training) in Palliative care medicine and Geriatrics.
The Podiatry Residency Program aims to take patient care and services to the next level by empowering the next generation of podiatric physicians and surgeons to provide the best evidence-based medicine and the most empathic patient care possible. The program offers a 36-month curriculum that accepts students from all 11 podiatric medical schools nationwide. With additional capabilities in rear foot and ankle reconstructive surgery, the program has a diverse focus on all aspects of podiatric medicine and surgery. This emphasis allows resident training, ranging from basic procedures to major reconstructive trauma,
revision, joint replacement, and peripheral nerve surgery.
With a strong academic focus, the residency program has become one of Illinois’s most sought-after postgraduate programs. The program has also garnered significant national attention due to its ongoing research and the faculty and residents’ excellent skills and reputation. Presenting at a minimum of two national conferences per year, the team also has multiple publications that continue to increase and grow within the program.
The Nursing Residency Program works to ease the transition for new graduates and has retained over 90% of participants. Students meet regularly for eight months and connect with peers at the same point in their careers, allowing them to discuss current struggles, problem-solve, and learn resiliency. Topics include patient-centered care, empathy, vicarious trauma, delegation, prioritization, communication, accountability, and process improvement.
Since KSB opened its doors in 1897, the organization has been fully dedicated to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals to restore, maintain and enhance health by providing superior care now and in the future.
