From the LCCOA Executive Director

December has arrived and the Senior Center is buzzing. We have so much planned for the upcoming month. As you are now aware the Golden Echo has changed; it is now part of the Telegraph and Gazette. So please take the time and look over every page, as we want to be certain you see all that is happening this month. LCCOA is working on our own little book to send out to our seniors. Please contact us at 815-288-9236 if you would like a copy of “The Golden Echo Booklet.” In the past 2 years we have had to endure so much change, this is another change to be added to our lives. Thank God our seniors are so resilient, and can bend with each and every hurdle. Thank you, seniors, for being our friends and

From the WCSC Director

supporters. We are always here for you.

A Christmas Gift

Christmas came early this year for Lee County Council on Aging, thanks to United Way. United Way of Lee County purchased two new exercise bikes for LCCOA Senior Center. So many of our low-income seniors are unable to pur chase memberships to athletic facilities, to the YWCA or to the YMCA. We are thrilled to offer free one-on-one training with Brandan Lumzy. Brandan has been facilitating our Chair Yoga for the last several months; our seniors love working with Brandan. Thank you, United Way and Brandan Lumzy, for giving this won derful gift to all our seniors.

Smart Phones and Computers

Our classes are continuing to book up! Every week we have seniors stopping to tell me what a wonderful program we have started; they find Aaliyah is so patient with all the seniors, and they are learning, and learning about their phones and computers. I love watching our seniors come in with their lap tops under their arms. One senior stated: “I feel like I am a kid again back in school, and mak ing my mind to work over-time.” Please

Christmas sweaters — I’ll be wearing mine! And don’t forget the Festival of Lights trip planned for December 9. I can’t think of a better way to get into the Christmas spirit. Seats are still available — stop by the Center to pay for this trip today. Members receive a big discount. Not a member yet? Sign up today and get the rest of this year for free!

call us at 815-288-9236 — we will be glad to add another day for classes.

Trips and More Trips

New Orleans is booking up; we can take only 75 people, so give Marisa a call at 815-288-9236. This trip is clearly going to be a blast! Everyone needs to see New Orleans, so check it off your bucket list. On top of this trip, we have our Alaskan Cruise, the Caribbean Cruise, Niagara Falls, Elf the musical, and our Christmas Mall shopping trip. We have something special in store for you on our Alaskan Cruise — you asked and you shall receive; that’s our motto.

Christmas Walk

LCCOA has joined the Christmas Walk on Dec. 2. We will be hosting our Christmas Senior Shop at the Post House Ballroom. No vaccination card is neces sary for the Post House Ballroom. We will have items from 25 cents to $3. There will be something for everyone. We also will have hot chocolate, and our cash bar will be available for those shoppers to sit back listen to Christmas music and sip a hot toddy, a glass of wine or name your drink. Our Elves will be available to help you carry items to your car. Our store will be

with Medicare questions, license plate discounts, online applications and other information and referrals.

open from 4-8 p.m., so don’t miss out on the fun.

Saying Goodbye

Charles Albert Cook left this world on Oct. 20, 2022. Charles racked up the fre quent rider miles here at LCCOA Senior Transportation. Our drivers and staff loved to speak with Charles. He rode with us several days a week. His favorite topic was the Next Picture Show; where Charles volunteered for over 12 years. He was a very interesting man who loved art, and wanted to share art with all who met him. The Next Picture Show and LCCOA will truly miss this kind and gen tle man. During the last conversation I had with him, when he was canceling his ride, Charles said: “It is a beautiful day out, I think I would like to walk to work, the weather makes me feel so alive.” He was still full of life to the very end. There will be a dedication Dec. 3. at the Next Pic ture Show; please attend and share your stories of Charles. We know Charles has finally found the best art gallery: “Heaven.” Goodbye, old friend, until we meet again.

Until next time, LCCOA a place where you belong, a place to call home.

– Susan

We have been having a lot of fun at the Senior Center this past month — some one came up to me and said, “keep invent ing reasons to have a party!” Well ... It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! And what better reason to plan another party?!

Please join us December 2 to decorate the Center. Staff will have all our Christ mas decorations out to be displayed throughout the Center on that day at 9 a.m. — but it’s okay if you want to wait until 10 to come in — there’s enough dec orating for everyone to join in.

But the Christmas fun won’t stop there — everyone can join us for an all-members potluck on that day. Every one should bring a dish to pass by 11 a.m. Those of you who attended the soup din ner on Trick or Treat night at the Center will be pleased to know I will be prepar ing cinnamon rolls again. Be there early before they are all gone!

We will also be showing classic Christ mas movies before lunch on Dec 5 and 19 at 10 a.m. Feel free to dress up in your

We are so excited to bring our Food Pantry on the road to our new satellite locations in the new year. If you live near Prophetstown, Morrison, Fulton, or Erie, our very own Beth Sterk will be taking applications for commodities to be avail able to your community once a month. All income-eligible seniors and disabled individuals should stop in December during her scheduled satellite hours to sign up for this service. Please do not for get to sign up the month prior to distribu tion. Income limits apply, but they are very generous: $1,986 for a household of 1, $2,686 for a household of two, $3,386 for a household of 3 and $4,086 for a household of 4. We will be at the following locations:

• Fulton City Hall, 415 11th Ave. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month

• Morrison, at the Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison St. from 2 to 4 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month

• Prophetstown, at Riverview Estates, 310 Mosher Drive, from 8 a.m. to noon on the fourth Tuesday of the month

• Erie Library, from 1 to 3 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month. While she is there, she will be able to assist seniors

You asked for it and Patty and Selina are teaming up with Neal from SCUG to put on an online couponing class this month. I spent most of my time as a young mom cutting coupons with my children and teaching them that if we didn’t have a coupon we couldn’t get it! But the days of cutting coupons are going away as every thing is going digital. If you have a phone, tablet or computer, you can enter this digital world of coupon clipping! Coupon ing is one of my favorite hobbies. Patty and Selina will be teaching how to maneuver safely and take advantage of the savings that your favorite stores, like Kroger’s, County Market and Dollar Gen eral, have to offer. Neal is also available Monday thru Thursday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for any computer or navigational question you may have. If we have enough interest in the online couponing, we will consider making this a monthly club!

This month, Breakfast Club will be December 16, due to the holiday schedule at the Center. The Center will be closed Dec. 23, 26 and 30 so that staff can enjoy the holidays with their family. If you are interested in the Breakfast Club, please give Yvonne a call at 815-622-9230. This is one of the most favorite clubs the Center offers. It’s a great time to socialize and enjoy a meal together — the more the merrier!

Mall for a while, you should stop by this month. Schnappin Deals has picked the Center as their mission for a Giving Tree. We have supplied them with our “wish list,” and they will be collecting gifts for us all month long.

Our first Trick or Treat night was a huge success. We had 100 kids and par ents stop by for seniors to pass out candy. Everyone enjoyed the chicken noodle soup and goodies provided to seniors that night. Thank you all who helped make this possible. I can’t wait to see the crowd next year.

We are so grateful to Melissa McCullough for rescuing us Kara oke amateurs and volunteering to bring her equipment to the Center for Novem ber’s singalong. Stay tuned for more updates in the new year for more of these fun events.

Big thanks to the staff and the Isle of Rhodes for throwing me a one-year anni versary party — I was so overwhelmed by all of you who attended. The gifts and well wishes were too generous. I’m com mitted to making next year even better for the Seniors in Whiteside County. Next month we will be sharing our upcoming years’ new events. Stay tuned to the Gazette as we transition from our own publication to being a permanent section in the newspaper to be run the last Wednesday of each month.

Treasured moments at the Post House Ballroom

The Historic Post House Ballroom was the perfect setting for Ben and Michael’s reception. From the couple’s grand arrival in a turn-of-the-century Rolls Royce, to the stunning place setting and centerpieces, to the added touch of the gold chiavari chairs, it was truly a memorable day. As the guests arrived, they were in awe of the spectacular room that took your breath away. We here at LCCOA wish Ben and Michael a wonderful life.
