You can help us help them by calling us and letting us know who needs extra assistance. We will try our best to find the right agency, or the right individuals to assist them. July Fourth! Fireworks, barbecues, friends, family, and the celebration of freedom. Freedom and independence, strong words! We are so fortunate to have these privileges; we often forget that not everyone has these experiences, including those in the United States. Think of all the seniors who fight every day to stay independent and productive individuals. They are fighting the battle of freedom. Each and every one of us can help to keep their freedom and independence. Whether it is to pick up their mail, ride the Lee County Council on Aging vehicles, or stop by and check on them. They just want to stay in their own homes, eat when they want, sleep when they want, and still feel they have control of their lives.

Here at LCCOA, we try to bring laughter, fun and independence to all our seniors in Lee County and the surrounding counties. Our monthly lunches with cards, games and information is a start.

We are back! LCCOA has had numerous calls asking to go on the Nashville trip.

Our Mackinac Island seniors had a wonderful time, and would like to travel with us again. We would like to thank our seniors for all the lovely cards and phone calls; our staff appreciated your support and kind words. One caller said, they were not in it for the games or prizes, they were there because that wanted to get away, see something different, and enjoy the company of other seniors. There was one particular card that pretty much summed up what our goal was. It said “ I had so much FUN; they say laughter is the best medicine, and I had a good dose.” See you in Nashville!

This reminds me that it’s not too late to join the Whiteside County Senior Center as a member. 2022 memberships are still available for the next 6 months. Your memberships are what keep the Center going. Without you we cannot exist! The Whiteside County Senior Center serves every senior citizen in Whiteside County.

We are funded 40% through a grant administered by Northern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. The remaining 60% must be raised from individuals (like you), groups and businesses. We also depend on Church Women United, the United Way and the Whiteside County Board. Without community support we could not continue to provide services to Whiteside County. Your memberships help us keep the doors open as we serve any senior in

Single memberships cost $25 and couple memberships cost $35 and are good for the year purchased in. It’s an easy way to donate to the Center and it comes with perks: You’ll receive a key tag that allows you to scan and go easily at our front sign in the area. (Checking in helps us keep track of seniors and allows for funding sources to give the center money.) You also receive a monthly newsletter with a calendar of meals and events by being a member. Members will be the first to know about the corn boil and confections fundraiser we are planning for August, along with the ice cream social featuring music by Helen and Dwayne that’s planned for July 15 (proceeds from both fundraisers will be used to cover expenses of our food pantry). Let us know if you have a great dessert to donate for our corn boil event in August! Members also receive a discount on trips. These discounts add up to a big savings — well over the cost of the membership!

Susan allowed LCCOA to bag up clothing that did not sell at the Leydig Center, and Kristin brought her girls to help LCCOA’s staff bag clothing for our FunSavers clothing drive. What great teamwork and support! This is truly what it is to be part of a community. Kristin Carlson has truly lead by example to her team. Her girls have a wonderful woman leading them. What can I say about Susan Johnson? She has a big heart and is always feeling our “pain.” Thank you, Susan and Leydig, for being our friend. Teen Turf – Eileen and Larry Piper — what would LCCOA do without them? When our truck broke down to take our bags to FunSavers. Eileen and Larry stepped up to the plate and rescued us. Eileen made phone calls and Larry drove our old bus with no air conditioning all the way to Carol Streams to drop off the hundreds of bags of clothing without any help. There will be a special place in heaven for the Pipers. We think they should be canonized for sainthood.

and Canasta. We would love to add more if you have a group you want to start at the Center, so let us know if you have a favorite game. We have physical activities like yoga, line dancing and walking. We hope to bring a balance exercise class this fall.

(Yoga is moving to Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m.). We have meals Monday thru Thursday for $3 to those 60 and over (these are Link eligible too!) Our food pantry is open every Thursday from 1-3 p.m. Please remember: If your parents can’t get here, you can pick up for them with a signed proxy! We have proxies that can be signed by your parents to allow you to pick up on their behalf. We also offer support groups for veterans, for Alzheimer’s and hope to have one available for grandparents raising grandchildren this fall. And a BIG thanks to the Sauk Computer Club!

Because of them, we are able to offer technology assistance Monday thru Thursday from 8:30 -11:30 a.m. In July, Neal will be taking appointments for anyone wanting to learn how to email. In August, he will be offering one-on-one classes to learn how to use Microsoft Word and other Microsoft products. Call the Center at 815-622-9230 to book your appointment.

The Fancy Feet ladies are at the Center at least once a month, and sometimes twice a month, for those needing assis-

tance with nail trimming. Even though our craft center is new, we are seeing awesome groups begin with Quilt Club on Monday afternoons and Knitting Club on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays we are adding Adult Coloring. Someone is now available to instruct beginners most every week.

Checkers, chess and our community puzzle are always set up as well as a fresh pot of coffee. In, July we will be adding sun tea, instead of hot tea, to our beverage stations. We have special events like Bingo, The Price is Right and movie times. We will be adding Cub games on the big screen in July, so make sure to pick up one of our calendars.

Our Outreach ladies are the best! They can help you sign up for license plate discounts, property tax senior freeze forms, free COVID tests to be mailed to your home, along with helping you with your Medicare questions. If you are needing assistance with food they can help sign you up for SNAP benefits or if your roof leaks; they can assist you with filling out a grant/loan application with USDA Rural Development. These ladies are in your area once a month — Prophetstown, Erie, Morrison and Fulton. Plus, you can always just walk in the Center on Mondays without an appointment.

The Prom is on its way!

Our goal is 100 seniors for the prom. We have 50 sold so far and we are waiting for the other 50 to purchase their tickets. So give us a call, or come on down and purchase your ticket. We have wonderful prizes, music and food. You can dance to your heart’s desire. Mark the date: August 27, 2022, from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. Tickets are $15. Please support LCCOA. The Benefit Access Application, offered through the Illinois Department on Aging, is an online-only application. Upon approval, this application provides a discounted license plate sticker, and if chosen, a Ride Free transit card for fixed-route transportation systems (such as those found in Chicago).

Qualifications: Must be age 65+, or able to prove disability status, and fall within the income guidelines, using the prior tax season’s Federal taxes (form 1040) and accompanying documents. If you did not file we will need all 1099s and other income from that year. All income is counted, including your full Social Security.

Lee County Council on Aging is looking to hire an Elder Benefits Specialist. The job is 20 hours a week, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The Elder Benefits Specialist will help clients age 60 and over, or the disabled going on/ already on Medicare, with various local, state and federal programs; including but not limited to Tax Assessment Freeze, Benefit Access Applications, Medicaid and SNAP applications, farmers market vouchers, Respite and Gap filing, Medicare counselling, Part D and Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan comparisons and enrollment, client advocacy through assistance with services, and appeals when necessary.

The person we are looking for should be a self-motivated, organized and enthusiastic person who works well with the senior population, and a person who can handle a multiple tasks and a busy schedule.

Requirements are a high school diploma or equivalent, basic computer literacy in Word and Excel, internet navigation, the ability to learn new technology as needed, SHIP and AIRS certified (or willing and able to become certified), must have access to a reliable transportation for off-site job tasks (proof of insurance required), can work independently, as well as with others.

Beware of scams!

Beware of scams! Beware of misleading TV advertisements! Especially the ones from actors who tell you to sign up with their plan or that you will not need to pay your Part B Premium — this is not true.

The qualifications for Part B Premium to be paid is based on income and asset guidelines. Before you sign up with a plan, please contact LCCOA and speak with our Outreach SHIP certified counselors. They are here to help!

License plate discounts

We are receiving numerous calls regarding license plate discount. Again, not everyone qualifies; there are guidelines for this program. Your total income, including social security, cannot exceed

$33,562 a year for one individual, no income asset limit. For two individuals, the income cannot exceed $44,533 a year, and no asset limit. You must provide your Federal 1040 form and your 1099, and your total income including social security. If you are married, you are required to use both incomes.

Medicare Part D

It is not too early to think about open enrollment for Medicare Part D. We will be taking appointments starting Aug. 15. Our appointments book up fast; we will try to make every effort to service all our seniors.

ITAC phones

For our clients who are hearing impaired, we still provide phones from ITAC. Please check to see

if you are due for a renewal. You may renew your phone every three years. We will be receiving updated phones. Remember, all phones are free; this is not an income-based program. It does not matter whether you make $200,000 or $5,000, you are all entitled to a free phone. The only criteria is that you have a hearing impairment. We here at LCCOA also serve anyone that has an hearing impairment. You can be 5 years old or 105; each person will be served and can receive a free phone, based on their hearing needs.

ADRC satellite locations open in Whiteside County Our Aging and Disabled Resource Center (ADRC) offers satellite locations throughout the county on Wednesdays: First Wednesday – O’Dell Library, 307 S. Madison St., Morrison, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Second Wednesday — Erie Library, 803 8th Ave., 9 a.m.-noon Third Wednesday — First Reformed Church, 510 15th Ave., Fulton, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Fourth Wednesday —Prophetstown Library, 209 W. Third St., 1-5 p.m.

We offer walk-in days on Mondays from 9 a.m.-2

p.m.. No appointment is needed and we will assist patrons on a first come-first serve basis. Medicare covers voluntary advance care planning as part of the yearly Wellness visit. An advance directive is an important legal document that records your wishes about medical treatment at a future time, if you are not able to make decisions about your care. You can talk about advance directive with your health care or legal professional.

OPEN MIC IS BACK! We had 22 happy singers to start off the night. Open mic is a great opportunity to socialize with friends, and a time to make new friends. Before Covid we had up to 80 people attending — let’s bring back those numbers. LCCOA has the capacity to have up to 100 people.

Upcoming Trips — WCSC Kane County Flea Market Sunday, August 7 Cost: $35 for members, $45 for non-members People say that if they made it, you will find it at Kane! Not just antiques, but a day of shopping for new and vintage items. 600+ dealers inside, outside, and under sheds. One of the longest running, best antique and collectable flea markets in the world. “We have been a place for people to come and enjoy the fun of searching and finding the one thing they have sought for ages.” Multiple food vendors are available on site.

Bus will leave Sterling Walmart at 7:30 a..m. and head

to the flea market in St. Charles, Illinois, for a day of flea market shopping. Bus will leave the flea market at 3 p.m. rain or shine. This trip includes motor coach transportation and driver tip. Wrigley Field — Cubs vs. Phillies Thursday Sept 29 — 1:20 p.m. game time Cost: $65 for members, $90 for non-members Bus will drop off and pick up at Wrigley field. Seats are terrace reserved outfield, section 230. Tickets will be issued on the bus the day of the game. If you are traveling with friends, we need to know that when

you sign up, so you can sit together. No refunds will be given if you are unable to attend on game day. Bus departs from Sterling Walmart at 8:30am. We will stop at Dekalb Oasis on the way into the game, and MAY stop there on the way back, depending on how late the game runs. Cost includes bus, tolls, parking, game ticket and driver tip. Rummikub at LCCOA Mondays at 1 p.m.

Rummikub players are gathering at LCCOA on Mondays at 1 p.m. The European game is becoming an increasingly popular game here. Rummikub was invented by a Romanian in Israel, in the 1940’s. It soon became Israel’s best-selling export game. By 1977, it became a bestselling game in the United States. Rummikub, played by 2 to 4

players with numbered tiles, is similar to European card games, like Machiavelli and Vatikan. Here at LCCOA, we have several games going at the same time! Feel free to join in on the fun!

Line dancing at LCCOA — New beginners group New beginners group starting in July. Line dancing is a great form of exercise for seniors to improve strength and muscle function, increase balance and flexibility, as well as improve cardiovascular and heart health. Line dancing isn’t just for country music anymore! If you can tap your toes in time to music, line dancing might be just the thing for you!

Chair yoga for seniors Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

Chair yoga, a new program for seniors at LCCOA, is a safe and more comfortable method to get the same benefits as regular yoga. Meeting every Wednesday at 1 p.m., our yoga leader is trained and certified, and already conducts classes at other locations. Staying seated and off the floor means that even frail seniors or those who aren’t so flexible can safely do the exercises. Yoga can help all older adults to loosen and stretch muscles, reduce stress and improve circulation.

Bingo is at LCCOA July 15 at 9:30 a.m.

Bingo at LCCOA has long been a favorite activity. Originally called “beano” when the game first arrived in America in 1929, Bingo has become a weekly fundraising activity in churches all over America. In addition to being a lot of fun, Bingo increases mental flexibility and alertness, exercises hand-eye coordination, and accelerates healing with laughter and socialization. All are welcome – come and enjoy!

Euchre at LCCOA Fridays at 12:30 p.m.

Euchre, called the “poor man’s poker,” is one of the most popular card games in the Midwest. Some stories say Euchre came to America with the Pennsylvania Germans. Other stories say it came over with French soldiers.

Farmer’s Hand, Poor Man’s Hand, Bottom Hand, and Grandma’s Hand are some of the many nicknames given to a particular “hand” one might be given during the game.

One thing you can be sure of: everybody at the table has an opinion as to what just happened!! Come for the cards; come back again for the people you met.

Mexican Train Dominoes Fridays at 1 p.m.

The game Americans call “Mexican Train” is originally a variation on a Chinese game called Pai Gow, which emerged in China before 960 A.D. Chinese laborers brought the game with them when they came to Cuba to work in the sugar cane fields. Then they and Cuban laborers brought the game with them when they came to America to help build the railroads. It became immensely popular with the Mexican laborers, also. And that’s how the game got its name. Join the game, and develop your skills at concentration!

Table crafter at LCCOA Thursdays at 1 p.m.

Beadwork, knitting, needlepoint, crocheting, needlework, are all types of table crafts enjoyed by persons at the crafters’ table here at LCCOA. Gathering every Thursday at 1 p.m., conversations and laughter fill the room while the crafters busily produce beautiful and colorful, practical and/or whimsical pieces. Feel free to just join in anytime and enjoy the benefits of crafting: reducing stress, improving hand-eye coordination and building friendships and community. New event: Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group Second Thursday of the month from 3-4 p.m. at Morningside of Sterling This event is hosted by Morningside of Sterling, WCSC and CGH Health Foundation. You will receive confidential support and conversation, discussing dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. On-site respite care will be provided for your loved one during the meeting.
