Executive Director By Susan Lawler Happy New Year! The New Roaring ’20s are back! Are the holidays really over?? I am sure I say this every year. It has been so busy here at the Center the days and weeks just fly by. We are all thrilled to see all of your wonderful faces that have not been able to visit the Center due to family, illness or on extended vacations. LCCOA’s staff and I miss all of you. We do think of you as our family. Please contact us if you need help or a ride. For all of our friends, Senior Transportation is back. If you need a ride please call Marisa at 815-288-9236, she would be glad to provide transportation for your medical appointments, shopping, busi-
ness or entertainment. If you are bored and would like to get out of the house, call and hop on board the LCCOA Happy Bus and tour the town, it could be fun.
Furnace Update I promised you an update on the furnace. Of course, during all the holiday parties and events our 25-year-old furnace decided to leave us. Farley came out and did their magic and installed our new furnace; that is the good news. The bad news is we need to pay for it. So here I am, like a bad penny, and asking you for your pennies and dollars to help with the cost. Please spread the word and tell Santa we need a belated Christmas present –

Santa’s Workshop 2019’s Santa’s Workshop was a great success. LCCOA and our amazing volunteers made 81-plus children very happy. LCCOA could not have provided all the wonderful items without the help of all your donations, especially Nelson Energy and KSB, who sponsored this event. Patty Ballard was a Godsend in providing props and items to make our fantastic gift wrappers’ life easier. The Leydig Center helped with additional items to ensure we had enough great gifts for all our children. Just an added touch: our extra items from Santa’s Workshop allowed LCCOA to open up a senior shop to help all our seniors purchase items for Christmas. LCCOA tried very hard to provide a Merry Christmas for the young and the young at heart.
The ’20s are Back LCCOA has a fantastic year
planned for our seniors and the community, so keep watching and reading the Golden Echo, and LCCOA will keep you posted. Our Chili Supper will have entertainment again, so watch for your tickets and mark your calendars for March 11, 2020. Of course our annual Prom on April 25 is always a great hit. Last year we had 170 people attend, so don’t miss this year; we have a real surprise in store for you. May 16 is LCCOA’s clothing drive, so keep saving those items to help pay for our furnace. We are bringing back the carnival. It was a fun-filled evening and has been requested to make another appearance. The Luau in August is always a smash. On top of all these events, we have a few other goodies in store for you. LCCOA will keep you on your toes. a great time. The coffee is flowing and the cookies are disappearing – truly a delight. We just had Santa’s workshop last weekend. I have lived in Dixon all my life and never had heard of this. Let me inform you that this is an amazing event! Children can come to the Post House Ballroom and shop with an elf for their loved ones. Mom and Dad are close by so no worries. The items are priced from a quarter to four dollars. Once they make their purchases, they can have them wrapped for free. Santa, Mrs. Claus and breakfast are in the lower level. What a wonderful way for a child to learn the spirit of giving and thinking of others. Not to
mention, learning the process of shopping! A big thank you to all of our fantastic volunteers who make this happen. The Ballroom hosted a handful of corporate Christmas parties this month. I loved decorating the Ballroom and having it enjoyed. Looking forward to another busy year in 2020! Keep the Ballroom in mind for your events. Remember, when you rent the Ballroom, it’s giving back. We have a large selection of books-fiction, nonfiction, cook, how to do, and

While sitting at my desk, I am thinking what I can write about for the January edition of the Golden Echo. Right now, so much is happening in December. It’s our bookkeeper, Julie McGrail’s, last day after 13 years. Julie was so helpful to me when I first joined LCCOA. I will forever be grateful. Thank you, Julie! What a busy place this center is. We have crafters in the next room visiting with each other and making their own crafts. I see quilters, knitters and painters. The talent here just amazes me! I can hear laughter and fun banter coming from the dining room. The euchre players are having

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD
Are you new to Medicare and in need of help navigating your choices? The WCSC Outreach Department will be hosting its Medicare Choices class on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 12:30 p.m. in the Big Room. We welcome those who are new to Medicare, caregivers of those who are new to Medicare, and beneficiaries who have been on Medicare but are in need of a simplified explanation on the parts of Medicare. There is no charge to attend. Please call in advance to get signed up at 815-622-9230 Ext. 194. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period will begin January 1 and goes until March 31. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage Plan and want to switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan, or if you want to disenroll from a Medicare Advantage Plan and go back to Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and pick up a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, then this is the time of year to make changes. Only one change can be made during this period, and changes go into effect on the 1st of the next month following the change. Please note that this enrollment period is not for those who are just in a Medicare Part-D
plan, or for those that do not have a Part-D drug plan. This enrollment window is only for those already in a Medicare Advantage Plan. STILL TAKING 2018 INCOME FOR BENEFITS ACCESS APPLICATION (LICENSE PLATE DISCOUNT/RIDE FREE TRANSIT CARD) Do you need to complete or renew your License Plate Discount/Ride Free Transit Card application? Both WCSC and LCCOA Outreach Departments can help you! In order to file this appli-
cation, we will accept 2018 yearly income until April 15, 2020. Once you are approved for the application, your eligibility is good for two years. To file the application, please bring in proof of your 2018 yearly income (income taxes, 1099 forms, W-2’s, etc.), driver’s license or state ID, social security card (for yourself and your spouse if you are married), and proof of disability, if applicable. REMINDER TO KEEP 2019 YEARLY INCOME STATEMENTS With tax season quickly approaching, you will soon be receiving important income statements from 2019 in the mail. Examples of the forms you may receive are SSA-1099’s (yearly Social Security statement), W-2’s (Wages), 1099-R (yearly Pension, IRA, or Annuity Statements), etc. Regardless of whether or not you file income taxes, these forms are required proof of income for many of the applications we assist with. When you get the forms in the mail, please keep them together in a safe place.

LCCOA hosting help for preparing tax returns LCCOA is happy to once again host the AARP Tax Aides.The AARP-trained aides will help low and middle-income taxpayers successfully file their 2019 federal and state taxes for free. LCCOA will be setting appointments for the Tax Aides on Mondays only, starting Feb. 3 and ending on April 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. To make an appointment, stop into LCCOA at 100 W. Second St., Dixon, and pick up your envelope of instructions and forms. You will need to bring completed form with you to your appointment. The AARP Tax Aides will help with individual taxes, but not for businesses, farm income, rental income, partnerships or other business concerns. They do not work on health savings accounts, minors’ investment income, extensive stock sales (more than 8), some cancellation of debts, some K1’s, or moving expenses. Taxpayers are reminded to show up at least 15 minutes before their appointment time and to bring their completed forms, their Social Security card, and all relevant tax paperwork. Last year, preparers helped 325 area seniors file their 2018 taxes.
