By Susie Welch With the new year fast approaching, I always think of new beginnings. 2024 means new beginnings for me at Lee County Council on Aging. I’ve been overwhelmed with joy due to all the community and staff support I’ve received. If you haven’t noticed, we have been busy decluttering and rearranging. Several of the seniors have seen our vision and pitched in to help. Our card groups chipped in and sorted books. (We have a new shipment of books all located in the Dining Hall for your enjoyment, please stop by to pick up one or two.) We have also added a DVD library.

Keep your brain healthy with free classes STERLING — Current research indicates that challenging the brain is one of several things you can do to improve your brain health as you age, and now’s the perfect time to make a New Year’s Resolution to stimulate your brain and enhance cognitive function and memory.

Register now for the free monthly CGH Wits Fitness brain exercise classes taught by University of Illinois Extension educator Kara Schweitzer. Sessions are from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month from Jan. 9 to Dec. 10, 2024. The classes are hosted by the CGH Health Foundation at 2600 N. Locust St., Sterling, in the Community Room, and you can

join any time throughout the year.

Schweitzer will lead participants through interactive activities crafted to stimulate the brain. Regardless of age, whether you are young or old, it’s never too late to embark on a path of brain training.

Join WCSC If you would like to join the Whiteside County Senior Center for 2024, the cost is $25 per person per calendar year or $35 for two people residing in same household. You can mail your check to WCSC, 1207 W. Ninth St., Sterling, IL 61081. WCSC has developed a new Corporate Membership. As a Corporate member you will be recognized in our building and in the newspaper for your support, along with valuable benefits for your employees. Employees will be eligible to attend our exercise classes and the member discounts on our trips by showing their employee ID or business card when signing up.
