By Susan Lawler November was a month that was filled with great news, events and sadness.

Remembering a Friend: John Lane Walker The man with the biggest smile, always a kind word and a generous volunteer. John truly loved the city of Dixon and all its organizations. John touched so many hearts; his passing is a great loss to the community, his friends and his family. John was more than a volunteer, more than a friend; John was family.

LCCOA feels the passing of John, not because of all the Chili Suppers and the phenomenal Luau Dinners, but the care and love he brought to LCCOA. John would call months ahead for our events to make sure he had everything we needed to make our event a success. He was a true friend. He never did this for the glory or for the recognition; in fact he didn’t

want anyone to know – he would slip out the door right before the event would begin. He was like a father watching over his children and wanting only the best for them. I was just telling John in August that he should open his own restaurant.

He would just smile with that big grin on his face and shake his head, never really answering me but just walking away smiling. I am positive John is looking down, with a chef’s hat and a great big smile saying “all is well.” Heaven is truly lucky, the angels will be feasting every day.

Goodbye John Walker, until we meet again. LCCOA will miss this charming man.

I hope 2019 was filled with joy and happiness for you and your family. As I reflect on the past year here at the center, I’m overjoyed with everything we have been able to accomplish. Our staff works hard to ensure we provide you with excellent ser-

vice and we continue to dream up new ideas to move the center forward. I think I can speak for everyone when I say our greatest accomplishment this year was the new parking lot. We are so thankful to have that complete and we hope you are too! Since winter has set in early, we have sadly already dealt with snow

students were wonderful helpers and the kitchen staff – the only thing to describe them is “amazing”. This year the Senior transportation was the hit of the day.

LCCOA Senior Transportation was able to transport 10 seniors from Heritage Square to LCCOA to enjoy a fun filled day; which included door prizes and a coloring contest for our little gremlins.

Veterans Day – Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue.

Veterans Day was a heartwarming day. LCCOA was so fortunate to have an array of speakers.

First to start off the celebration was Lt. Colonel Charlie Thomas, who provided the history of Veterans Day. Our next speaker was Jim Gorman from the Veteran’s Administration. Jim was a wealth of knowledge and guidance for those Veterans who need transportation to Iowa.

LCCOA was honored to have two of the Honor Flight Committee members, K. A. Hudson and Tom Bushman. Both gentlemen explained the application process for the Honor Flight and wanted to encourage all Veterans to take the flight. And last but not least were Dixon’s very own officers, Ryan McWethy

and Chief Steven Howell Jr. They were accompanied by K-9 Hery from the Canine Unit; all our guests truly loved Hery, who was a little scary.

A big thank you goes out to the First Congregational United Church of Christ from Lee Center’s women auxiliary group, who made 24 gorgeous quilts and afghans. LCCOA and our veterans could not thank them enough for their labor of love.

Golden Kiwanis For those of you who do not know the Golden Kiwanis, stop by any Tuesday at 9 a.m. They are always there to welcome you with donuts, coffee and an interesting presentation. This wonderful club donated the last $500 to pay off our air conditioner. LCCOA is truly grateful to this organization who help so many children and organizations in the Dixon area. Thank you for your generous donation.

As we near the end of the year, Christmas is quickly approaching. As a reminder we will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so we can spend extra time with our families. We hope that you have a very merry Christmas and enjoy family time as well. We will also be closing at 2 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and we’ll be closed on New Year’s Day. As you reflect on 2019 and look forward to 2020 I hope you plan to make a point to find joy in

each and every day. 2019 was a very hard year for WCPT as we lost three beloved staff members.

With such a great amount of loss we remember that each day is a gift and we should treat it as such. I challenge you to find the positive in every situation this coming year. Negativity certainly breads negativity so be the positive we need in the world.

In 2020 I hope you take the trip you’ve always wanted to, call the friend you haven’t talked to in a while, visit the special person you may not have seen for some time, do what makes you happy!

Post House gets into the Christmas spirit Hello again!

It is hard to believe that I am writing for the December issue for the Golden Echo already. Where has this year gone? As the old saying goes, “A good busy is better that a bad busy.” I am happy to report that it has all been a good busy.

Here we are coming off the wedding season and landing right into the holiday season. Monster Pancakes was a great success! You may have noticed our spooky decorations around the center that totally put everyone in the scary mood. A big thank you to all who helped make that day possible. All ages attended,

from 1 year to 100 years. That is what makes LCCOA so special.

We are busy preparing for many company Christmas parties and Santa’s workshop taking place on December 7. Just this week we began digging into the stored Christmas decorations. If you know me, you know that decorations are my thing! I am like a kid in a candy store looking through all the Christmas treasures from years past.

Last month Susan and I decorated the North Hall of the Ballroom for a Christmas photo shoot for an ad in Valu Chic. The room was transformed into a Christmas

dream. I wish we could have had an early Christmas party to enjoy it. A Christmas tree, beautiful tables with décor and a vintage wedding dress made the photos perfect. The sashes for the chairs were provided

by Jamie Moore at Petals to Parties, Flower Patch in Oregon, Ill. The Ballroom has been booking up for the 2020 season. It promises to be an exciting year!

• WCSC will not offer the Medicare Choices Class in December. Please stay tuned in the Golden Echo for the next class offering in January!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone! want to provide you with a reminder of things to be on the lookout for, what to save in the mail, and what to plan for next year.

First, be sure to keep an eye on the incoming mail. You’ll want to be sure to save those statements that Social Security will be sending you, both the 1099 (what you made in 2019) and the monthly statement (showing what you will earn in 2020 each month). These documents are extremely important to hang on to, as they are the primary documents you will need

in most of the programs you may apply for during 2020. You will also want to watch out for any other 1099’s, 1098’s, W2’s, etc. that will come during the month of January, even if you do not plan to file state or federal taxes. These documents must be kept for verification and proof of what you have earned in 2019.If you plan to file taxes you will want to keep all of these documents together as some programs require both taxes and accompanying documentation.

Lastly, if you filed a Benefit Access

Application last year (2019) then you will not need to file again until 2021. If you do not recall the last time you applied, or do not know when your renewal period is, then please contact your center to verify: LCCOA 815-288-9236 ask for Outreach or WCSC 815622-9230 ext. 194. Applications can be completed no sooner than within 90 days of the application expiration date. Please note that the expiration date of your registration renewal and your Benefit Access Application renewal dates may be different. If your Benefit Access Application renewal falls before April 15, 2020 then you will still need to use your 2018 proof of income.

As this year comes to a close and we prepare for 2020, we want to thank each of you who read our articles each month, take notice of our changes, and learn from what we have to offer. We thank every person who used our services, provided a donation for our services, who are members of our agencies, and who give of themselves in any way they are able to help make our centers thrive. We thank you for another successful year gone by!

LCCOA is planning a trip in June 2020 to Mackinac Island, Mackinac Point Lighthouse, Kewadin Casino, Mackinaw Crossings, Soo Locks Cruise and a tour of Colonial Michilimackinac all for a low price of $550 for members and $575 for non- members.
