As you can see from our front cover, LCCOA’s staff and drivers all enjoy a good family meal — maybe it is because we enjoy each other’s company. We are a great group, and our seniors make us even better. We love you all. Sadly, this will be my last Thanksgiving. I will truly miss my staff, drivers and seniors; we have had so many laughs and good times together. Each and every one of you have made a lasting impression on my heart. I will carry each of you with me all the days of my life. Happy Thanksgiving to all our senior friends.

Yes, it is that time again: We will open our Holiday Shop on Nov. 1. Our shop has grown each year, and with each year we have received and have given so much joy to our seniors.

Remember, our prices are great and our items are just what you ordered from Santa. We work hard at LCCOA to provide this special shop for our seniors, because we are a Senior Center, and it is all about Seniors; this is their place, their home — we are not a Community Center, we are a Senior

Center dedicated to serving the seniors of Lee County.

Burton Foundation

Once again the Burton Foundation has stepped up and made a generous donation to LCCOA. This organization has promoted, and supported LCCOA for several years. They truly strive to improve the lives of all our seniors, and to ensure that our seniors have a wonderful Holiday. Thank you for understanding the needs of the older population. Your donation will mean so much to the seniors of Lee County.

Senior Showcase

On Oct. 3, the annual Senior Showcase took place at the Northfield Mall in Sterling. There where over 300 seniors participating and educating themselves on Medicare Part D, Social Security, Respite, Gap, and just learning about all the facilities that both Whiteside and Lee County have to offer to seniors. Two ladies won great prizes: Cathy Ley and Debbie Bell both stopped by our booth, and Anna and Sandy provided these ladies with information on LCCOA — and to top it off they both were winners. Mark your calendar for next year; there will always be goodies at LCCOA’s table.

“Back in My Day”

Our second hardback edition of “Back in My Day” is off to the printers. We will be receiving them just in time for Christmas, or maybe Thanksgiving, we just never know. Cameron Zies always does his very best to accommodate our Senior Center; in saying this, we just might have them for Thanksgiving.

Speaking of Cameron, we have been fortunate to have this wonder gentleman in our lives. Cameron has been a God-send to our agency. He not only delivers our supplies, orders our equipment, and publishes our book, he is there when our computers go down or our printer decides to have a mind of its own. He is always there to solve our problems. When all the IT techs are unable resolve our issues, Cameron is there with a solution; we can always count on Cameron. We sometimes feel we take advantage of this kind and genuinely caring person, but our agency could not survive without him. Thank you, Cameron, for all you do for LCCOA. Your family must be so proud of the you; we know we are proud to call you our friend.

Gaffey will host a flu shot clinic at the Center on Friday, October 17, from 10 a.m.-noon. The clinic will be free to Medicare recipients with their Medicare card on hand, or $30 for non-Medicare recipients. Gaffey will have forms to sign up upon arrival.

facets in getting this little paper off to print. Terry Christian truly puts his heart and soul into making our new version of the Golden Echo. Terry works miracles with the Publisher program. He has a layout, and into this layout the process begins. Aaliyah runs around taking pictures of all our events, and sends them off to Terry.

Terry starts placing the photos in certain locations, and from there he looks for jokes or funny sayings to insert throughout the paper. Now the collaboration begins. I come up with an idea for the cover, Terry and Aaliyah put their heads together and do their magic. I am not lying, it takes several revisions before I say “I love it”. Then the process continues, until every article and photo is tweaked. It is a hoot how Terry and Aaliyah stand at my door, and hand me another version. To be honest, if someone critiqued my work as much as I do, I think I would cry. They are both good natured, and away they go — but this is only the beginning. It then gets sent off to Rusty Schrader. I think Rusty must cringe when he sees our e-mails. We start asking if we can have collages, and words across us, or above us. He never complains just does his miracle to please us. Rusty, Terry and Aaliyah thank you for all the Echos. Rusty, there will be a special place in heaven for the kindness you have given us here at LCCOA. Good-bye, my friends — until we meet again ...

WCSC veterans drawing coming up WCSC’s veterans drawing will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, during Vets Coffee at the Whiteside County Senior Center. The grand prize will be a flag blanket.

Medicare’s Open Enrollment period (October 15December 7) is your chance to think about what matters most to you. Plans can change from year to year, and your health needs may change, too.

Thank you, seniors — we love you and farewell ...

Trips and more trips Alaska was an adventure of a lifetime. Marisa escorted 22 fun-loving seniors. The ride was rocky, but this didn’t stop our senior from having a wonderful time. Forty-two seniors headed off to New York and Atlantic City, and they cam back with amazing stories. The Statue of Liberty is breathtaking, and an emotional experience. The group was truly engaged throughout the trip. Many said they have never been to New York before, and were glad they added this trip to their bucket list. Stay tuned for more adventures in the upcoming year.
