Fall is in the air and Lee County Council on Aging had a wonderful September. We had a full house attending AARP’s Driver Safety Classes. If you missed this one, we will be having another one in the spring.

The turnout for Open Mic has been amazing. If you want a fun filled evening, join us on the last Friday of the month; LCCOA’s dining room is rocking.

Talking about rocking, LCCOA is heading to Nashville. So grab your hats and put on your boots, look out Nashville here we come. We will be leaving April 29 and return-

ing May 4. Six days and 5 nights to kick up your heels. We have something planned for everyone.

So mark your calendars, stop into LCCOA and reserve your seat.

On Oct. 12, the Celebration Belle is cruising down the Mississippi River. Our annual Fall Foliage trip is sailing off with 30 of our LCCOA’s loyal supporters. It is always an adventure as you view the changing of the beautiful colors that this trip always provides.

To top this off, we are offering a Life Story Writing class on Oct. 22, 29 and again in November. What a great opportunity to write about

For those of you who like to get an early start on the holidays; we are giving you a heads-up on our December trip. LCCOA is driving to White Pines to see Scrooge on Dec. 7. Valued patrons: As you may know, we have been working to make changes in our kitchen program to meet your needs and stay within the confines of budget/donations. We have tried new meals, different offerings and more. Sadly, our kitchen still ran a significant deficit last year. Due to that, we started implementing changes last year in an effort to minimize our deficit but add

value to your plate. Our kitchen program does not receive enough funding from other sources and we must be fiscally responsible. Our building is deteriorating at a rapid rate and we are forced to consider changes that make our programs strong and financially feasible for you and the center as a whole.

The board of directors and I have spent many months having significant conversations about

financial difficulty in the kitchen.

It is with deep regret that as of Oct. 1, we will need to increase the meal price to $6. The center has not raised meal prices for several years, and with the cost of food on the rise we sadly must increase the price of our meals.

Further, we will be closing the kitchen on Fridays starting the week of Oct. 1. We have very low attendance on Fridays, so we are hopeful this will be of minimum impact to most of our patrons.

We know that this information will be as upsetting to you as it is to us, but we hope that you will remember that this decision was made to ensure the center has longevity and will be here for years to come.

With the beautiful weather we were having over the weekend a couple of weeks ago, our window was open and I heard the sounds of kids playing a couple of houses from ours – laughing and screeching (they have a pool). It was a great sound.

Then, at work in the PH Community Center, I heard our card players – the same laughter only at a lower decibel, and with a little yell instead of a screech.

The older we are, the younger we still are!

I have exciting news – I am reducing my hours to about 12 a week with the intent to finally retire at some point. It’s kind of a struggle to get out of here. I’ve worked as Ballroom Manager since April, 2002, and before that I was on the Board of Directors for LCCOA for about 8 years. It kind of gets in your blood.

Can I change the way I get my Medicare benefits in the fall every year?

Dear Marci, I got Medicare in February of this year. My friend told me that people can change the way they get their Medicare benefits in the fall every year. Is this true? How will I know what changes to make?

– Rose, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Dear Rose, Your friend was referring to Fall Open Enrollment, which runs from Oct.15 through Dec. 7 each year.

During this time, you can make changes to your health insurance coverage, including adding, dropping, or changing your Medicare coverage. Even if you are happy with your current health and drug coverage, Fall Open Enrollment is the time to review what you have, compare it with other options, and make sure that your current coverage still meets your needs for the coming year.

You can make as many changes as you need to your Medicare coverage during Fall Open Enrollment. The changes you can make include: Joining a new Medicare Advantage Plan.

Joining a new Part D prescription

“Even if you are happy with your current Medicare coverage, consider other Medicare health and drug plan options in your area. ... Research shows that people with Medicare prescription drug coverage could lower their costs by shopping among plans each year.” drug plan.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan or a stand-alone Part D plan, read your plan’s Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and/or Evidence of Coverage (EOC). Review these notices for any changes in a) the plan’s costs, b) the plan’s benefits and coverage rules, or c) the plan’s formulary (list of drugs your plan covers). Make sure that your drugs will still be covered next year and that your providers and pharmacies are still in network. If you are unhappy with any of our plan’s changes, you can enroll in a new plan. If you want assistance reviewing your options, contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for unbiased counseling. To contact your SHIP, visit www.shiptacenter.org or call 877-839-2675.

Even if you are happy with your current Medicare coverage, con-

sider other Medicare health and drug plan options in your area. For example, even if you do not plan to change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, you should check to see if there is another plan in your area that will offer you better health and/or drug coverage at a more affordable price. Research shows that people with Medicare prescription drug coverage could lower their costs by shopping among plans each year; there could be another Part D plan in your area that covers the drugs you take with fewer restrictions and/or lower prices.

The last change you make to your Medicare coverage during Fall Open Enrollment will take effect on Jan. 1, 2019. To avoid enrollment problems, it is best to call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227) when making any changes to your health and/or drug coverage.

10 It’s that time of year again when the Annual Open Enrollment period is right around the corner and you may be seeing loads of advertisements – both in the mail and on commercials. Do you know what to do, what it means, or if it even pertains to you?

Medicare offers this time of year, every year, from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 to allow every person on Medicare the opportunity to check your part D plan and be sure that you are in the best plan for you. Insurance changes every year, and that means it could potentially be costing you unnecessarily to stay in the same plan from year to year. If you are on Medicare, and do not have VA or other credible drug coverage, you should be contacting us.

How do we help? Both Vicki and I are Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) certified, which allows us the opportunity to help

you find the best plan for you in an unbiased direction of education and comparison. We go through ongoing educational trainings every year to keep up to date on the latest Medicare changes and best practices to help you, our clients.

As in years past, we are handling our caseload on a first come, first served basis, taking medication lists ahead of time so that we are able to process your comparison and contact you when we have it completed. This way of doing things helps to ensure that we are not wasting your time in the event that Medicare’s website goes down during your appointment. This also aids in the time frame of your appointment or to even avoid one altogether if there are no changes needed. We process several hundred people’s plans each year, and with only 37 working days (during

open enrollment this year) we want to always be able to process everyone’s application and we find this helps things run more smoothly.

What you need to do. In order to get you on our list, we need you to submit the following information printed on a full sized sheet of paper: A complete list of current prescription-only medications with correct spelling, dosage and quantity.

This list should include detailed information, such as inhalers, having the size inhaler you use and how many you purchase a month, lotions or insulin with size bottles/ packaging types and how many per package, and if you are giving us brand names for medications that you take generics of, please be sure to indicate this as it makes a huge difference. Another way to do

this is to submit us a printed copy from your doctor or pharmacist and highlight the ones you currently take.

We also need to know what pharmacy you are currently using and a second choice pharmacy if you are willing to switch, if it means cheaper prices.

Please include a copy of your new Medicare card, as well as your name and phone number. This information can either be dropped off, mailed, faxed to 815-288-6563 with ATTN: Outreach, or emailed to lccoaoutreach1@comcast.net.

Outreach at WCSC It’s here! The Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Part-D comparisons starts Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7. If you are wanting to compare to see if there is a cheaper drug plan for you in 2019, make your call early in the season to get an appointment scheduled.

In order to compare plans at your appointment, please bring your Medicare (red, white, and blue) card, and a detailed list of the current medications that you take.

Getting help in Whiteside County The Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) Aging and Disabled resource staff help with a variety of programs for older adults and persons with disabilities. Our walk-in day is on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fall and winter clothing has arrived at The Emporium Fall is here! It has arrived at the Emporium Thrift Center, too. You will notice a change in our “look.” All of the clothing departments have been changed over to fall and winter clothing. There are lots of sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, and winter coats. There are also beautiful scarves, hats, and gloves. While you are there, you will want to take time to check out the Shoe Room for shoes, boots, socks and PURSES. We know ladies like those purses!

of men’s clothing. We have the usual T-shirts, pants, and we also have suits and ties. There are lots of beautiful ties for anyone who uses them for crafting. There is a great selection here!

Let’s talk about fall décor – we have it. Flower arrangements, wreaths, wall hangings, pumpkins, candles, and vases. If you are that person who likes to make their own Halloween costume, we would love to help you find the items you need. We even have a tub of vintage clothing, just ask us about it.

Notes from Whiteside County Public Transit Our fiscal year began in July and our wheels are already turning at a rapid rate! So far, we are seeing an 11 percent increase in transit ridership! We have welcomed two new drivers to help us get you where you need to go. Larry and Thomas will be helping us meet our large demand in the afternoons. We are so happy to know that the community continues to utilize our services. Our goal this year is to provide over 50,000 rides and we think we can accomplish it!

Each year, our admin team reviews ridership reports from the year past and determines a new fiscal year goal. We believe goals help us move forward and strive to be the best team we can be. Everyone helps us meet our goals which in turn, shows our grantors that we utilize our funding and our funding is greatly needed.

Accomplishing our goals begin with our dispatch team. Do they answer the phone kindly, answer your questions, and help you schedule a ride effectively? If yes, you are likely looking forward to your ride. Next up, are our drivers.

Do they greet you, are they friendly, do they ensure you get to where your going effectively?

If yes, you are likely to ride with us again AND tell a friend. The last step in accomplishing our goals, is with our admin team. Do we resolve any issues or questions you might have in a timely manner, do we ensure we support our team members, do we help boost morale, etc?

The final step to accomplishing our goal ends with you, our valued riders. If you had a positive experience, please tell your friends about our service! The more people that know about our service, the more people that will ride with us.

I was recently compiling data and found we have grown by nearly 80 percent over the years.

Isn’t that amazing! We are all part of WCPT’s success as we all take on special roles. When I began this position nearly 7 years ago, I didn’t even know we offered public transit in our community. We are now transporting little ones to activities, parents to employment, students to higher education, and seniors to doctor appointments. I am so proud of the work we have done here and the people we have been able to help over the years! Life Story Writing – Karla Belzer Monday Oct. 22 and 29 – 1-2:30 p.m.

Lee County Council on Aging is hosting another Life Story writing workshop. Karla Belzer from the University of Illinois Extension Program will be the facilitator/instructor for this program. This is a great opportunity to see your life memories and achievements in print. This program has been so successful LCCOA felt it was worth hosting

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) hosted by Lee County Council on Aging Presented by Lifescape Services Tuesdays 1-3:30 p.m.

Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and Nov. 6 Free 6-week class at Lee County Council on Aging, 100 W Second St., Dixon CDSMP is for adults with chronic health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes disease, and other ongoing health problems. Participants attend a 2 ½-hour interactive workshop once a week for 6 weeks to learn program solving, decision making, and other techniques for managing problems common to people with chronic diseases. In a typical workshop, participants set a realistic goal for the upcoming week and develop an action plan for meeting that goal. They report their progress at each workshop, and solicit feedback from the group to help address any challenges. This workshop aims to build participants’ confidence in managing their health and keep them active and engaged in their lives.
