Executive Director

By Susan Lawler Lee County Council on Aging is looking forward to a wonderful August. The staff and I have truly missed all of our seniors. LCCOA is moving forward; we are gradually re-opening our Center with face to face appointments. We are excited, once again to see our seniors.

Seniors, Don’t Forget Your Census LCCOA’s staff, drivers and myself are very busy sending cards, making phone calls, delivering lunches to seniors, creating educational videos; and now we have partnered with United Way on Wednesday’s to help our children, seniors and the community, with additional lunches.

Wednesday’s is a great opportunity

for LCCOA’s staff and myself to visit other areas of LEE County. This is a time when you will see at least 4, possibly 5 of Lee County Council on Aging vehicles in the surrounding towns to remind our seniors, to please complete your Census.

LCCOA was fortunate to receive a grant to place window wraps on LCCOA/LOTS vehicles. IDOA and the Department on Census thought it was a great idea. Kudos to LCCOA!

By Tori McDaniel I hope everyone is doing well! We miss each of you and hope to see you soon! The IDOA has issued guidance on re-opening the center again, however we have made the hard decision to remain temporarily closed to the public for the time being. With cases on the rise we worry about your health and safety.

The drivers come into contact with the general public and are in and

out of the building all day. Due to this, we have decided to wait just a bit longer to open. Our direct funding body has agreed with this decision to help minimize the risk to you because we have a unique situation with the center and transit housed together. This means the center as well as the Emporium will remain temporarily closed until at least the end of August. However,

planting, and transplanting plants that are already in our design area.

We are so thrilled by the donations to help this garden reach its potential. LCCOA’s staff and myself are optimistic that we will be able to have a dedication in September.

The dedication will be for family and a few friends, in order to maintain social distancing.

Patty and Donna would always want your safety first. These lovely ladies will be watching over us; since Patty was a stickler for rules, she would not be a happy camper knowing we had a dedication and did not maintain the social isolation rules.

LCCOA has been working diligently to protect our seniors, staff and event clientele. We have placed shields around all our desk, reception areas and on our buses.

Sanitizers everywhere, masks available for our seniors, gloves and social distancing. Our new project was installing decorative windows around our bar area. Clara Harris

from GoodFellows searched out and procured 100-year-old windows to be renovated and placed around our Post House Ballroom bar. Maureen and I have been working on designs for the inserts of these windows. Maureen had taken pictures of the windows with her tablet. In reviewing the pictures, one pane had clearly an image of an angel floating. You cannot see it with the naked eye, but each time we have taken pictures, the angel appears. I am on a mission to find out the history of these windows, and possibly a medium to intervene with our visitor. The staff and I feel it would be a great event, if we hosted a séance for those who are believers, for those who are just not sure and for those who clearly want to prove us wrong. We are reaching out to all our readers; if you know a reputable medium, we would like to contact that person.

our Outreach Dept. continues to serve you via phone at 815-6229230 as it has since the pandemic began. Our fabulous Outreach staff is SHIP certified and can assist you with license stickers discounts, resources, tax freezes/homestead exemptions, public aid applications and Medicare help.

We will continue our weekly wellness phone calls to some of our most vulnerable patrons. We initiated this during sheltering in place and have continued to help prevent social isolation. If you would like to receive a weekly call from us, please let us know and we will add you to the list. Your emotional wellness is very important to us during this difficult time and we would love to catch up on what ‘s

happening with Y-O-U! We have also come to another challenging realization. What in the world will you be able to do when you come and visit once we re-open? We know you love to play cards, board games, exercise and more, however with social distancing some of those beloved games will not be an option. We would like to hear from you as to what we can offer while social distancing.

Would you love to be able to just come and visit with friends from a distance? Maybe enjoy a cup of coffee? Let us know what you would LOVE to do when we re-open that will still allow you to be 6 feet from your friends. We hope to see you soon!

Love is still in the air, and the Ballroom is still taking reservations for couples’ special day

• August 2020

Due to Covid-19, it’s no surprise that most venue managers have been busy dismantling their work from the previous year: contacting, advising, canceling and hopefully rescheduling. I am always thrilled to show the Ballroom to a prospective client.

This gives me a reminder that we will get through this difficult time, and that people are still in love and want to get married and hold celebrations.

I had the pleasure to meet this sweet couple from Rockford, Ill., last week: Bethany and Nick. We all used safe precautions with our face masks and were six feet apart. This young lady with a sparkle in her eye came to the door. I welcomed her in and introduced her to the beautiful Ballroom. She found us online and noticed our reasonable pricing and just had to come see for herself.

I began telling Bethany about the Post House Ballroom and all that it has to offer while we strolled. Truly there is no other place like it in the area. There are plenty of barns and supper clubs, but no ballrooms with two breathtaking chandeliers and marble flooring. Not to mention, NO limitations on your food choice. Since we do not cater, you can hire the caterer of your choice.

I always like to show my clients the front of the building. Its towering columns and historical architecture make for beautiful photographs. I like to say “It’s a big-city feel without the big-city price.” The addition of the Lawless Garden tops it off! We have some big plans for the garden in the near future.

Did you know that you can hold your ceremony on the Lee County Courthouse lawn? I can help make that happen for you. Plan that outdoor wedding with a plan B at the Ballroom.

Before Bethany’s tour was over, she mentioned bringing her fiance, Nick, to see the Ballroom. They said “Yes!” to the venue. Next September of 2021 will be a beautiful time to have a wedding. God willing, we will be Covid-19 free.

If you are planning an event for 2021, please give me a call. I would love to show you the Ballroom. Now is the time to get your future dates scheduled.

It is the mission of Whiteside County Public Transportation to get residents of all ages where they need to go white providing safe, efficient, affordable countywide transportation. We strive to enhance the quality of life for all Whiteside County residents.

WCPT is available for residents of ALL ages throughout Whiteside County to get to resources such as medical, educational, social, business; or to get anywhere else you might need to go!

WCPT provides curb-to-curb transit services Monday through Friday. The fleet consists of lift- and ramp-equipped vehicles, which makes the system fully accessible.

Comfort/service animals are welcome on all fleet vehicles. Please notify your dispatcher when making your reservation if a comfort/ service animal will be accompanying you.

Currently you will be asked a series of health questions when scheduling your ride. All riders are required to wear face masks at all times. WCPT is taking a maximum of 3 riders per bus to implement social distancing per Illinois state guidelines, so availability may be limited.”

Outreach news for August Extension on license plate stickers & benefits access application effective dates The Secretary of State has extended the expiration date on all license plate stickers until November 1st, 2020, for those whose stickers expired, or are set to expire, from March until Sept 30th, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. This gives everyone a grace period, and you will not be ticketed for expired stickers during these dates. Please take note: If you have a license plate discount remaining with the Benefits Access Application, and you bypass your effective dates on your application, it will affect your eligibility in the program. This means that you will not be able to claim the unused discount or seek a reimbursement. Make sure you are aware of your effective dates associated

with your application. If you need to refile your application, give the Outreach Offices at WCSC or LCCOA a call! As a reminder, the DMVS are now open, with social distancing guidelines, to serve you if you need to pay for your sticker and claim your discount. You can also pay for your sticker online or by mail through the Secretary of State.
