I hope you wonderful, amazing mothers had a great Mother’s Day. I, on the other hand, had an amazing, but quite different Mother’s Day. I Zoomed for several hours with all my children. We had a T-shirt contest. My son, Josh, won.

He wore 7 T-shirts and peeled them off one at a time. Each T-shirt was a memory from the past. We had a great time reminiscing over each one, which represented all the great places and times we had as a family. It clearly wasn’t my usual Mother’s Day, but we made the best of the day and we are thankful we had zoom time together.

June 2019 vs. June 2020 This time last year our theme for June was “Coming Together to Make a Difference.” This year it is “Staying a Part to Save Lives.” I am so proud of my staff and drivers – they have made the ultimate sacrifice to stay a part from family and friends in order to keep LCCOA open and running smoothly.

We always talk about the heroes who save a child from a burning building or save hundreds of soldiers on a battlefield. We often forget about the silent hero, the one who faces the challenges of each day taking care of family, friends or a Senior Center. These heroes go about their normal day, and we do not think twice – but without them, where would our lives be? They make so many people happy, and they help give meaning to so many lives. Yes, my heroes and yours are Marisa, Samantha, Vicki, Maureen, Mike, Connie, Jim and Aaliyah; where would our lives be without them? Every day they are on the battlefield of Covid-19 and every day we wonder: Which one will be attacked by the enemy? As I turn off the lights every night, I thank God we skated through another day, which means another day to help and service our Seniors; another day to drop off those lunches, chemo patients, dialysis or just a

By Tori McDaniel I hope you’re doing well! It’s May 11 as I write this, and as of today we are planning to re-open on June 1.

What does that mean for you?

Transportation Transit will open to the public on Monday, June 1, at 6 a.m. We will return to our normal service hours of Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Service will be open to all.

So, what will change? In an effort to implement social distancing, we will have one rider on the bus at

a time. This means we may fill up quickly so please call ahead of time to schedule your rides. You must also wear a mask while onboard.

The drivers will not permit any rider onboard without a mask. Our drivers will also be wearing a mask and will be cleaning and sanitizing the buses throughout the day. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact dispatch with your questions as of June 1.

In passing of a friend We here at LCCOA are saddened by the passing of our dear friend and avid card player, John Stiles.

John spent his entire life in Dixon, Illinois, and was dedicated to serving his country and fellow veterans.

John devoted 20 years to driving veterans to Iowa City for their doctors and medical appointments.

To say we will miss John is an understatement. John’s smile would light up his entire face. I remember the first time I met John, I wasn’t quite sure if he was joking or he was being serious, I stopped and looked puzzled, and then that smile came over his face. There was just a way about him, that truly made you like him. He was well liked here at LCCOA, by all the staff, myself and his fellow card players.

We will miss this kind man. We here at LCCOA will keep John and Lanieta in our prayers.

John, safe journey to that card table in the sky, until we meet again, may God be with you.

As of today, we have not received any new directives from the Department on Aging. Due to this, the senior center will remain closed to the public. Our staff will return to the center on June 1 and will be able to assist you with your questions via telephone. Since most of the activities at the center consist of large groups, such as line dancing and lunch, we don’t know at this time when those activities will be able to resume.

The Emporium will also remain closed at this time. We know that curbside service is available at most retail locations, but that just won’t work at The Emporium.

All of the items are unique and change daily, which would make it hard to call in an order.

Trips that were canceled due to

COVID-19 will be reimbursed and payments will begin to go out as soon as we return on June 1. We will continue to monitor the COVID situation and follow the Governor’s guidelines in terms of future trips.

As you know, our Outreach Department has been continuing to serve you remotely and will continue to be here for your needs.

We hope to have more information for you in the July Echo. We know this has been a very trying time and we wish we could snap our fingers and have everything back to normal. We sincerely apologize for having to close the past two months, but we wanted to ensure your safety and the safety of our staff.

Fun with Prom No Prom? No problem – here’s a look at the LCCOA Prom that could have been ing began. Glenn Miller and his orchestra were on point. Not a person was sitting once they began to play. Glenn played all of his favorites: “In the Mood,” “Little Brown Jug” and many more.

Oprah, The Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William were quoted, “We had such a marvelous time.”

Country singer Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani raved about how much fun they had; “We can’t wait to come back next year,” they said.

The dancing went on for hours.

I hope you enjoyed this little bit of fun. Next spring, we will have our LCCOA Prom. We may not have the who’s who from Hollywood attending, but I guarantee we will have our own stars. Please plan to join us. It will be a SMASH HIT! The Post Ballroom is booking 2021 events.

My June article usually would be sharing news about the LCCOA Prom that had taken place.

Because of Covid-19, as you know, Prom 2020 could not happen.

Therefore, I am going to make something up. You may call it fiction; I call it a fun story.

The Post House Ballroom was the place to be on April 25, 2020, for LCCOA’s Annual Prom. Everyone who is anyone attended. You would be safe to say that it was a smash hit!

The tables were decorated in a spring lavender and yellow. Each table was adorned with the finest crystal flown in from Waterford, Ireland. Grand Baroque silver by Wallace from France was smartly placed next to the finest of china.

The aroma from the beautiful floral designed centerpieces was intoxicating.

The paparazzi raced to get the perfect photo of the beautiful guests exiting their limousines, stepping onto the red carpet that led them to the Ballroom.

Looking forward to seeing that ‘Open’ sign again Emporium shelves await shoppers Looks like a normal day outside – sun is shining, birds are singing, the lawn is green – but we are not at The Emporium Thrift Store to serve all our customers. We hope that will soon change, perhaps soon after you are reading this article.

As soon as “the powers that be” give us the good word that we can open The Emporium we will be there. As we understand it now, there might be some restrictions, such as number of persons in the store at one time, maybe no one under 16, and face masks for everyone?

Please bear with us and together, we can all make it work.

It will be so good to get into the old routine again – just think of all those shelves of dishes, decorations, flower pots, fabric, and books!

The list goes on and on. On the more necessary side, we will have your needs covered for clothing, shoes, coats and jackets. The list could go on and on. I bet our “jewelry people” will be having “withdrawal” about now. Believe me, that jewelry case and earring rack will be full of treasures!

We will have more information concerning donations once we get the okay to reopen. We will try to get this information to you through this newspaper, watch for signs in our windows, and follow us on Facebook. We miss all of you and we miss being with our fellow Volunteers.

LCCOA: On the road and at your service, with lunches from Salamandra restaurant Senior Transportation remains open at LCCOA! We have been busy providing lunches to the Seniors of Lee County, from Dixon to Sublette, Monday through Friday.

The menu has varied day to day.

Seen on this page are pictures of the lunches being delivered. The meals were donated to Lee County seniors by Salamandra’s Restaurant, 105 W. First St., in Dixon. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Salamandra restaurant!

Taking a ride? Bring a mask LCCOA bus passengers are required to wear masks at all times, no passenger will be allowed to ride if you have any symptoms of COVID-19.
