By Susan Lawler Happy May! I actually saw some buds popping through the hard winter ground. Two robins perched on my deck this morning. I think Spring has sprung. Thank God! Since we’ve last been together many new and exciting events have happened at the Center. First we received funding from Dixon Community Trust to help purchase our handicapped-accessible doors. We here at LCCOA feel overwhelmed by their generosity. Next, Susan Johnson held her Quarter Mania here at our Post House Ballroom. It truly was a fun night. I ran back and forth collecting quarters.

One person said, she didn’t know I could run that fast in heels; I surprised them all. Susan donated

funds from her event to help pay for our well overdue sign. We are hoping that by September, with the support of the community, we will have a new sign to depict the true character of our historic building. Did you know our Post House Ballroom brings in people from all over? We are truly a tourist attraction. We are always doing our part to bring dollars to Dixon.

Prom! What can I say? I promised you we would knock your socks off and we did. We had 100 pre-sold tickets and another 42 tickets sold at the door. We had 142 people and they were still coming after we closed our ticket table. Thank you, thank you for the support. Next year buy your tickets in advance to guarantee a table. The doors

were to open at 6 p.m. and people started arriving at 4:30 and our last group left at midnight. The Super Red Hot Karaoke & DJ did a dynamite job. So many of our guests said they will be back next year; it was the best time they have had in years. One person said it had been 18 years since she danced and had so much fun. So mark your calendars for 2020.

We had a nice group for our Easter Egg Hunt. Great gifts and just a fun afternoon had by all. The Bunny was good to all.

Don’t forget our May 5 volunteer appreciation Sunday! If you volunteered once or a dozen times please come. For those who couldn’t volunteer, but provided their support by donating funds for food, entertainment or just fixing up our Center please come.

Sandwiches for Support Looking for a tasty meal and the opportunity to give back? Look no further! Whiteside County Senior Center and Public Transportation are teaming up to bring you a tasty boxed lunch and raise funds for our programs. Sandwiches for Support will be held Friday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunches are $8 and will include: choice of sandwich (chicken salad, ham, or turkey), chips, salad, cookie, and drink. All lunches must be pre-ordered by Friday, May 10, and will be available for pick-up on May 17 at the Senior Center between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Orders of $150 or more are eligible for free delivery. To place an order, please complete the order form at right and return to the center with payment before May 10.

It is nice to see all the spring colors in womens tops, jackets and dresses. Don’t forget to check out the bins of ladies jeans, including all sizes. We are the place for mens T-shirts for work or play, as well as casual shirts and jackets. Need a new hat or two for summer? We have them.

For the summer sports, I have seen golf balls, tennis rackets, bike helmets. Also coolers, yard

chairs, umbrellas. They come and go, so stop in as you never know what unusual thing you will find.

All our volunteers will be there to greet you and help you.

The WCSC and LCCOA are proud to be selection centers for the ITAC (Illinois Telecommunication Access Corporation) program. This program provides free amplified landline phones, cell phone amplifiers, CapTel (captioned phones), and TTY’s to those that meet eligibility guidelines.Accessories can be ordered with the chosen equipment, including answering machines that slow speech playback and land or cell phone call alerts.

To qualify, an applicant must be an Illinois resident, certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, audiologist or nurse practitioner, and have a telephone service that remits to the program. Both LCCOA and WCSC aid in the application process by working with an audiologist to make getting a
