Spring is in the air at the Lee County Council on Aging, and with it comes a month full of opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate!

We’re excited to kick off a brand-new four-part series, “Refill My Cup,” sponsored by Addus HomeCare, starting April 21 at 1 p.m. This uplifting series focuses on rejuvenation, connection, and practical tips to enrich everyday life. Take a little time for yourself — and come refill your cup!

Line dancing update: Line dancing with Cheryl is moving to Tuesdays! Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month for fun, begin -

ner-friendly dancing and great exercise. Come step, laugh, and move with friends!

Get growing this spring! On April 16 at 2 p.m., join Nancy Wadsworth for a fun and hands-on workshop, “Make Your Own Window Herb Garden.” Learn how to plant and care for fresh herbs right in your own kitchen window — perfect for adding flavor to your meals and a little greenery to your home! After learning how to plant your own herbs with Nancy, why not keep the gardening spirit growing? The Lee County Council on Aging is currently seeking volunteers to help with our Senior Vegetable Garden. This garden helps provide fresh produce for local seniors and supports our nutrition programs throughout the season. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact the center at 815-2889236 or stop by to sign up.

Looking ahead, our Annual Planning Meeting for Activities and Programming will be held April 23 at 2 p.m. Providers and community partners are invited to

Monthly Medicare tip

If you currently receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Medicare will mail your Medicare card to you. This applies if you are eligible for Medicare due to age or disability. Your coverage will go into effect on the first day of your 65th birthday month or the month of your 25th disability check.

ment or employment in programs or activities in compliance with the Illinois Human Rights Act; the U.S. Civil Rights Act; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act; the Age Discrimination Act; the Age Discrimination in Employment Act; and the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions. If you feel you have been discriminated against, you have a right to file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Aging. For information, call 800-252-8966 (Voice & TDD), or contact the director of Lee County Council on Aging, 100 W. Second St., Dixon, IL 61021 or telephone 815-288-9236; or Whiteside County Senior Center, 1207 W. Ninth St., Sterling, IL 61081 or 815-622-9230.

We have two SHIP counselors available if you have Medicare questions. Please reach out to us at 815622-9230.

Caregiver tip

Caring for a loved one strains even the most resilient people. If you are a caregiver, take steps to preserve your own health and well-being. About one in three adults in the United States is an informal or family caregiver. Caregivers report higher levels of stress than people who are not caregivers. It is important to know that they too, need help and support. In collaboration with CGH we offer two caregiver support groups, one in Sterling and one in Walnut. Please call 815-622-9230 for more information.

The senior centers do not require duration of residency or citizenship as a condition of participation in any services or programs funded by the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Residency or citizenship may be a requirement for other programs that the senior centers may provide assistance with in application or accessing of same. Services are made available, in part, with funds provided under Title III-B of the Older American Act, and the Illinois General Revenue Funds, through the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. We are a United Way-funded agency.
