One of Our Beautiful Butterflies has Flown Away ...

As I sit here late on Tuesday night thinking how I can tell all of our clients that visit our Center each day that one of our beloved family members of Lee County Council on Aging has gone home to all the beautiful butterflies in heaven. Patty Frey has been a loyal and dedicated member of Lee County Council on Aging for over 23 years. Patty had knowledge of

every department here at LCCOA; she told me once she has sat in every office at one time or another. She moved from Supervisor of Outreach to Office Manager. Patty would say, “I am not the Office Manger,” and everyone in the office would kid her about it. She did not like being called the office manager. She was not a pretentious person – never liked being in the limelight – that is why she

As you know, the COVID-19 pandemic is sweeping the nation.

Until today, it was something we were watching unfold from afar.

Today we learned that one of our own community members were diagnosed with COVID-19. We are no longer watching from afar.

COVID-19 is here. What do we do now? We take precautions and support one another. It seems panic as stricken our small town as most shelves are empty. We must remember that as long as we follow the guidelines we are given,

we will preserver. In an effort to continue to support you while also taking precautions, we will be implementing the following:

Senior center The senior center will no longer have group activities as directed by the Department on Aging. This means we will not serve lunch, offer commodities, host line dance, cards, or any other group activity. We will also not offer tax services at this time as directed by the AARP. We will help you one on one! If you need assistance from our Outreach department, please call our receptionist to make an appointment. She will ask you a series of questions as recommended by IDOA/IDPH. These questions will help us determine your risk for COVID-19. You may be told

She has touched the hearts of all who knew her and has left a lasting mark on our souls.

One of Patty’s favorite things was butterflies.

Her office, car and home were filled with butterflies.

I use to say to Patty I always liked the movie with Golden Hawn, “Butterflies are Free.” She would smile only in the way Patty could

smile. Patty truly was a butterfly and now she is free to journey throughout the heavens with all the other butterflies – but there are no two butterflies identical, they are all unique, and Patty was a very unique person.

So every time you see a butterfly say a little prayer for Patty, because I am sure one day the butterfly you see will be Patty.

I know this is a scary time for all of us. I am a planner and I like to know what is coming up and I like to have time to formulate plans. The constant daily change of COVID-19 is causing extreme stress because I feel that I can’t properly plan. So please know, that we are doing our very best as things continue to change. We don’t get ample amounts of time to make decisions like we would like.

We want you to remember that this will end and we will be stronger and wiser. I wish you and your family the best during this scary time. I also encourage our patrons to stay home if possible. I hope that by the time you read this, none of my points are valid and we are back to business as usual!

Transportation We know that transportation is an essential resource for many of our community members. We will continue to operate for as long as we can. Since transit is a public service with close quarters we have thought long and hard as to what we can do to keep everyone safe. At the time of this article, IDOT has given us no direction which is frankly disheartening.

Due to this, we will be implementing the following locally: when you call in to schedule a ride, dispatchers will ask you a series of questions as recommended by IDPH. These questions will help us determine your risk. In the event it is determined you are at high risk, we will need to deny your ride. Please know this is to keep

The Post House Ballroom is not just a big, pretty room. The Post Ballroom is a place for the community to come

Spring is in the air – and on Emporium’s shelves, too!

Greetings from the Emporium Thrift Center! Do you have that feeling that spring is in the air? We have that feeling at the Emporium.

Our shelves are filled with Easter and spring decorations. We have baskets, eggs, and lots of cute bunnies to give someone special at your house. We are still taking donations of Easter items, if you need to donate items that you no longer use. We have many lovely

items for hostess gifts – figurines, vases, small pictures, or books.

Our clothing racks are now full of spring and summer clothing.

It’s time to get out those shorts, capris, and T-shirts. Remember, men, we have clothing for you, too – lots of men’s shorts and golf shirts or T-shirts for work. Need a new lightweight jacket? Stop and see us. The shoe and purse department has a new “lighter look” too

– nice to see those colorful purses and scarfs.

We don’t have too many Easter bonnets, but we do have spring dresses, jackets, and coats, skirts and tops and lots of jewelry. So let us help you find an outfit for Easter Day. We would like to say Thank You to all the out-of-towners who stop in to shop with us. When you are in Sterling for an appointment, or

for a lunch out, just stop by and look around. I think you will be surprised at the variety of items we carry. We are located at 115 W. Third St. in Sterling. How many venues in a 50-mile radius can claim that they have two 20-foot chandeliers? How many venues can claim that they serve a chili supper under them?

That was the case this past Wednesday night. The LCCOA’s 30th annual chili supper was held in the Post House Ballroom. I believe it is safe to say that this event was successful.

Over 150 people turned out to enjoy a wonderful dinner and camaraderie.

The Ballroom was cleverly decorated in a western theme, and the line dancers sure added to the atmosphere. This special group of women always help make the party.

Tax-Aide services suspended until further notice Beginning March 16, AARP Foundation will suspend all Tax-Aide services until further notice.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation continues to develop, our priority is to protect those most at risk, including our volunteers and taxpayers. We don’t know at this time whether Tax-Aide operations will start up again in some or all locations for the remainder of the tax season, or if the tax season is extended. We’ll continue to monitor and assess, and will post an update if sites reopen.

How we can help

At LCCOA we are currently accepting appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Census aid in completing your form. We are not employed by the Census Bureau, but merely assist you with your form as we do with all other programs. We will help you to safely complete your Census online so you know it has been accepted and you are finished.

We can also assist in any of the other ways as well, but our primary focus will be to help with the form online to ensure it is competed and in on time.

Social Isolation in Lee and Whiteside Counties

Our centers have each been granted

a small amount of funding dollars to implement new, or expand on, current programs to help improve the lives of those who are feeling socially isolated or lonely. We are wanting to do more and are hopeful that this funding will not be limited to just this fiscal year.

In Lee County we were able to bring back the Senior Transportation, still a part of LOTS, but in of itself, to provide dedicated service to those in the finer stages of life. If you want to go out but find that transportation is a problem, call us at 815-288-9236 and speak with Marisa to get signed up and review prices. We may even be able to provide discounted or free rides. We are also adding transportation to after-hours events that we host. Check with us and learn more!

LCCOA has also begun a “pen-pal” like program. We want to find more individuals who we can reach out to with a letter, card or an occasional call just to say good morning. If you or someone you know would enjoy this service, please reach out to Susan Lawler, and we will get you or someone you refer to us on the list. We are working to expand on more of our traditional activities as well and invite you to send us your ideas.

At WCSC we have expanded on already in place programs to try and service more individuals who may be feeling lost, lonely or isolated. We invite you

to join us at any of our special monthly activities, or for our scrumptious lunches Monday through Thursday. We have implemented a new walking club, and don’t forget our popular Veterans coffee on the second Thursday of each month.

As a part of this new grant we are asking everyone questions from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale to help us better understand and locate those who may be feeling lonely, isolated, or in need of a boost to encourage more social activities. See the questions below and see what you have to say, then give us a call and allow us to share with you all the great things we have to offer.

Each of the questions below are rated with either: Hardly Ever = 1; Some of the Time = 2; Often = 3 1) How often do you feel that you lack companionship?

2) How often do you feel left out?

3) How often do you feel isolated from others?

If you score a 6 or higher, then allow us to see if we can get you started, or further involved, in a program to help you feel whole again. All information is kept strictly confidential through our agency, and information reported is solely for demographics for use towards obtaining future funding.

It’s here! Census 2020: A time for every single person to be counted in the entire United States. The Census is imperative and directly impacts programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, LIHEAP, schools, Medicare, libraries, and senior centers, to name a few.

The allocation of over $675 billion in federal funds for states to be delegated into these types of community programs is solely based on the distinct count of people in any given area. It is important to help ensure a complete count, so that funding is properly distributed over the next ten years.

Safety is of utmost importance and so is making sure that your personal information is being kept safe and confidential by law. According to the Census Bureau: “Your personal information is kept confidential by law. Your respons-

es can only be used to produce statistics. They cannot be shared with law enforcement agencies or used against you by any government agency or court in any way.”

This means that if you live in the United States, you need to be counted and no action can be taken against you. There will be no reports shared and no reports to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). You can respond in any of the three ways: phone, online, or by mail.
