This month my article is dedicated to the LCCOA staff. LCCOA has a wonderful group of hard working people, who have dedicated themselves to the Seniors of Lee County. As a non for profit, we do not make the glamorous salaries as found in large corporations; but not one of LCCOA’s present staff complains about what they earn. As one of my staff members stated “I knew the salary I was offered and I accepted it. I don’t feel like it disrespects me or my position.

This is not a job to me this is a career, my mission in life is to help as many people as possible, to the best of my ability”. I am sure by now you have guessed; which staff member I am speaking about; she has been here over 10 years and has given her heart and soul to LCCOA. Thank you Samantha for your loyalty and caring.

Each one of LCCOA’s staff from the newest employee Marisa to our oldest employees, each one truly cares about this Center and the clients that come through our doors. There is one employee I call the “Quiet Man” that stays in the background and listens to all the senior’s aches, pains, some very sad stories, and some very happy ones, with a broom in one

Fun Days at LCCOA hand and a smile at the corner of his mouth; he is always there to listen. I am saddened to know that this valuable employee and friend to all will be retiring next year after 25 years of hard work, dedication and loyalty. He once told me LCCOA is his second home; this is why he can fix the plumbing, clean the bathrooms, build a room, weld a deck – the list goes on – because it is a labor of love; this is what you do for your family.

Years ago when the Senior Transportation first started, Marty would be out in the freezing cold fixing vehicles so our seniors could get to their medical appointments, grocery store or just come to the Center to socialize with other members.

Marty on many occasions thought he had lost his hands or fingers from frostbite, but he still went out in the cold to shovel that snow, salt those sidewalks or change that tire. LCCOA will not be losing an employee they will be losing a family member, one of the protectors of our Center. So in the next months to come make sure you take the time to speak with him and thank him for all he has done for LCCOA. Again, it was never about the money, it was the love for LCCOA.

Recently the Post House Ballroom hosted the Dixon Chamber’s “Best of Dixon.” Thanks to Maureen, Jeremy, Jona and Jennifer this event was a great success, I have had so many calls regarding how elegant and just pure class the event was this year.

Thank you all for showing Dixon a wonderful time and truly honoring the dedicated volunteers of our community. Our first Sangria Social turned out to be a nice event. There were old faces and some new ones.

LCCOA was happy to see new people come out to socialize. If you have ideas to improve our events, pass them on to Maureen, she would love to hear your suggestions. Maureen did a great job on decorating for this event, it was simply lovely. She does know how to put on a show.

So who is cooking up our Chili, good old Heritage Square and their famous Chili cooking staff will provide Chili for all. The Red Hot Karaoke DJ will be entertaining us once again. LCCOA had a packed house last year so let’s top last year, and as one man said “The senior center is rocking.” So let’s Rock and Roll, people. LCCOA is waiting to greet you at the door. No children allowed.

And do we have some very special treats in store for you: We will have music, door prizes, King and Queen crowning, food, drinks and a few surprises. You don’t want to miss this spectacular event. We clearly were the talk of the town last year. Tickets will go on sale March 15 (must be 21 years old to attend, no children allowed).

Mark your calendars for March 11 for LCCOA’s 30th annual Chili Supper. Franklin Grove Living & Rehab Center, The Meadows of Franklin Grove and Oregon Living and Rehab Center will sponsor once again and bring all their wonderful staff to volunteer to help make this event a fun night for all. This year we lost John Walker, who cooked his heart out each year to bring enjoyment to all

the Alamo. My brother in law is currently stationed in San Antonio so we visited during Thanksgiving and had a great time on the River Walk. There are lots of delicious restaurants, shopping, and historical sites to see. There is even horse drawn carriage rides if you venture to the street above. My parents took all the grandkids on a carriage ride and it was one of their favorites!

Nearby, you’ll also find the Alamo.

The Alamo was much smaller than I expected it to be, but the history was amazing. This is a trip you don’t want to miss!

If Texas doesn’t sound interesting, we have a fun trip to Savannah, Jekyll Island, and Beaufort South

Carolina planned for August 22 through the 30. You’ll need to signup for this trip by June 15. I haven’t been to South Carolina, so I don’t have any insider tips on this location, but I hear it’s beautiful! This incredible trip will include guided trolley tour of Savannah, followed by hop-on/hop-off privileges, a guided tour of gorgeous Beaufort, and so much more!

Whether you’re interested in Texas or South Carolina you’re sure to have a good time! Break free from the drab winter months with an exciting summer experience and join us for a fantastic time!

Greetings, everyone!

We have made it to February, and as promised in my previous article, I would bring you up to speed with the Ballroom events.

It’s officially award show season. With the Academy Awards held last week, the Post House Ballroom hosted some of Dixon’s own award shows. There wasn’t a red carpet, but who needs that when you have Dixon’s finest?

The Best of Dixon was held in the Post House Ballroom on January 24. The Chamber did a fabulous job recognizing many deserving recipients. I was honored to be a part of such a special night.

Dixon High School’s second annual Athletic Hall of Fame was held January 25. This was truly a wonderful day. So many deserv-

WCSC will host Medicare Choices class

Are you new to Medicare and in need of help navigating your choices?

The WCSC Outreach Department will host a Medicare Choices class at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the Big Room.

We welcome those who are new to Medicare, caregivers of those who are new to Medicare, and beneficiaries who have been on Medicare but are in need of a simplified explanation on the parts of Medicare. There is no charge to attend. Please call 815-622-9230 Ext. 194 in advance to sign up.

Annuity, and IRA 1099-R forms, Interest 1099-INT, Dividend 1099DIV, W-2, and any other income statements that you received in the beginning of the year.

Along with these forms, we also need your social security card, driver’s license or state ID, vehicle registration, and proof of disability if you are under 65 and on disability.

If married and living together, we need all of your spouse’s information and income to file this application jointly.

Help with senior homestead exemption (PTAX-329) & senior tax assessment freeze (PTAX-340) Recently, or very soon, you may have received your PTAX-329 and/ or PTAX-340 in the mail from the

County Assessment Office, if you are 65 years of age or older, are a homeowner, and have had applied for this exemption in the past.

The WCSC and LCCOA Outreach Departments can help you complete and notarize these forms.

In Lee County only the Senior Tax Assessment Freeze needs to be renewed each year, however in Whiteside County both forms are required to be completed each year.

In order to qualify, either you or your spouse need to be 65 years of age or older. For the Senior Homestead Exemption, there is no income guideline. For the Senior Tax Assessment Freeze, your household income needs to be at or under $65,000, and proof of 2019 yearly income is required for

everyone in the household. If you plan to file income taxes this year, please file first before requesting to complete the Senior Tax Assessment Freeze form. If you do not plan to file taxes, we will require you to have all of your 2019 yearly income documents if completing the Senior Tax Assessment Freeze.

Medicare Advantage Plan enrollment/disenrollment period ends March 31 If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) HMO, PPO, PFFS, you can switch into another MA plan or go back to Original Medicare (Part A & Part B) and enroll into a stand-alone Part D drug plan until March 31.

2018 income still a requirement for Benefit Access Application (license plate discount) It may seem a bit odd that we are still asking for it, but we do require your 2018 income when filing your Benefit Access Application (formerly Circuit Breaker). This is an online application that needs to be filed every 2 years to give you the benefit of the license plate discount, and/or ride free transit card if you are 65 years or older, or under 65 and on disability, and if you meet the income guidelines as follows: Individual, $33,562; couple, $44,533; household of three, $55,500. Please note that we must include non-taxable Social Security into your yearly income total.

If you need to renew (within 90 days of expiration date of previous application), or if you would like to file for the first time, we will require 2018 yearly income up until April 15, 2020. We will accept 2019 yearly income after this date.

Examples of income documents that are needed are your 2018 US1040 income tax forms, 2018 Social Security 1099’s (fold out form with the pink box), Pension,

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to safely dispose of sensitive items.

Each household will be allowed to bring two boxes of paper items to be shredded. This event was made possible through a grant from Age Options.
