February is known for Valentine’s Day and President’s Day, but maybe most importantly it’s also known for Groundhog Day!
I get excited every February 2 to see whether the Pennsylvanian groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow! Why is this important, you ask? Because if he sees his shadow this means spring is right around the corner. Days of enjoying the outdoors are coming soon — but in the meantime, join us at Lee County Council on Aging for some inside fun!

Our January Employee of the month is Phil Penaflor!! Phil has been the Maintenance Director with the Whiteside County Senior Center for 1 year. He is a “Jack of All Trades” and always completes any job he is asked to do. He has three sons and five grandchildren who all keep him busy and entertained. Everything you could want is waiting for you at Lee County Council on Aging. This month we add Beginners Line Dancing to the Center on the third Wednesday of each month. This is in addition to our Workout Wednesday once a month — all brought to us by Cheryl of Center Stage. Our chair yoga with Brandan is three times a week and exercise bikes two times a week. There’s something for everyone when it comes to exercise at the Center! There’s no excuse not to be in shape in 2025. Your health is important to us, so stop by on Tuesdays for our fresh produce distribution (every week) and optional blood pressure reading by our volunteer, Lois Young the third Tuesday of the month. Golden Meals
Golden Meals is a local non-profit organization that provides $3.25 meals to our 60-plus senior community and $6.25 meals for our 59-and-younger community, Monday through Thursday at our site. Please watch the menu calendar as they will be providing meals on select Fridays. The Golden Meals calendar will be posted on our Facebook page and sent out in our monthly member newsletter. Thank you to everyone who has been coming for lunch! The turnouts have been great, and the food is always super yummy!!

Cheryl Moeller, owner of Centerstage Dance Company for 37 years, teaches a fun workout class at her studio, and she will be bringing it to us at LCCOA. To attend, bring two canned goods to use as weights during the workout and then donate them to LCCOA’s essential cupboard after the workout. The full body movement and gentle workout includes senior-friendly cardio. Alternative movements offered if needed, such as knee-friendly versions of a move. Cheryl likes to mix it up each class with different music, props and moves so you never know what you will get going into her class! Cheryl’s motto is “You gotta keep movin’ to keep movin’”
