From the LCCOA Executive Director

The Ballroom is back. We are booking weddings every day. We are still at only 100 guests at each event, but this is not stopping our brides and grooms from moving forward with their special day. We are already booking into 2023. We typically do not have many December weddings, but winter is not stopping our modern brides. Please call our Post House Ballroom Team at 815-288-9236; we just might have a date or two left.

As I sit at my desk looking at the pictures of all our seniors who have passed through our doors, and now have enter the gates of heaven, there is a part of me that goes with them. I say this with sincerity; for I have grown to love these wonderful people who have touched and have brought meaning to my life. I miss every single one of them. There are days I speak of them as if they are standing right next to me.

They will never leave LCCOA; their laughter can still be heard, and echoes

in our walls.

There are nights I walk the corridors and I can see their faces smiling up at me. I am so very grateful that they shared their lives with all of us here at LCCOA. They will be in our hearts forever.

This past week we lost another one of our friends, Joe Patterson, also known as the “man of many books.”

Joe was a hard-working, kind man that served our country well. Lee County Council on Aging’s Senior Transportation provided rides several days a week for Joe to receive treatments at the Cancer Center. We all here spoke to Joe almost every other day. He never complained about his treatments, or how he felt. To hear Joe, he was beating cancer. Joe gave it a good fight, right up to the end; but this was Joe. He did everything in his life to the best of his ability. Nothing was half done, he gave it his all. We here at LCCOA will miss our conversations with Joe. This sweet and sincere man will be missed by the drivers, staff and myself here at LCCOA. There is a library in heaven waiting for Joe to organize. God speed – good reading Joe, until we meet again.

A special shout out to our janitorial staff for keeping our building disinfected during this time, to provide a safe environment for Whiteside County Public Transportation staff.

Last, but not least, I want to wish all those Moms out there a HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! The pandemic may have given some Moms the opportunity to slow down and be home with their little ones all day; for adult children, it may have been difficult not seeing your Mom during Covid, in order to keep them safe. Wherever you are in your stage of life, cherish the time with your Mom or the sweet memory of your Mom a little extra this year! One of our grown children had not ridden in my car in several years, and recently I had given them a ride, and when they got in, they commented “It smells good in here – it smells like home!” That made my heart full! Take time and cherish those little moments and enjoy a “safe” long awaited hug and Be Well!

Spring has Sprung Hurray! Spring is here! I thought it would never come. I don’t like wishing my life a way; but clearly this was a rough winter. I am truly glad to see it go. Terry Christian has been out taking pictures of our garden. The flowers are popping their heads out of the ground. Every day we have a new batch. Please come and enjoy our garden. Bring your coffee, or a book and watch our butterflies and birds buzz all around our flowers.

LCCOA’s New Assistant Director How about that pretty smiling face on the Golden Echo’s front page? Yes you all know her; she is our Samantha Harazin, the Outreach Lady. She has been informing and assisting all our seniors for over 11 years. It is time to acknowledge her hard work and dedication to the Lee County Council on

Aging Senior Center. Day in and day out our seniors call or stop to tell me how wonderful this woman is, and how much help she has been in making a difference to their lives. By Beth Sterk As I write this, the days are windy and the sun is shining! The beauty of spring is around us and the daffodils and tulips are showing their beautiful colors. Soon, the lilacs will bloom, then I know the morel mushroom hunts are just around the corner! One of my favorite things to do! We picked our first few asparagus this week, so we know that the ground temperatures are much warmer.

Vaccination opportunities are increasing within our county and together, with the green grass and fresh air, we are seeing hope and light at the end of the tunnel! Our Outreach

Bingo is back at LCCOA, so mark your calendars for May 14. We are still adhering to the Covid rules, mask, temperatures and social distancing; in saying this you will need to reserve a seat. Clothing Drive FunSaver’s Clothing Drive is going strong. We need another 50 bags to make our goal. So clean those closets; we need your cloths. May 10th. is the last drop of date; Aaliyah will be glad to get your bags from your cars. Just call ahead and she will come on out and gather up all your donations.

Don’t neglect the entertainment – no matter the size of your party. Music and laughter is not where you should cut the budget for 2021! Your guests have been waiting to get out and have a good time. They have been on a TV series binge, and staring at walls; they are ready to get out on the dance floor!

Picking a DJ We do not provide a DJ. The bride and groom will pick their own DJ. Tips on how to pick a great DJ • Ask for referrals. Those recent events you went to: Did you have a blast? Ask who their DJ was.

• Is it the best option to go with someone you know? Maybe you should let them enjoy your special day? While you decide if you want to go with your family or friend remember to be specific about what you are looking for; write down what you want, go through their music, make a playlist, write out a

contract, be FIRM. • Do you feel comfortable with the DJ you picked? If not then move on, pick another. If you aren’t comfortable now, then chances are that you will not be on your special day.

What Is SHIP? SHIP stands for the Senior Health Insurance Program, a free statewide counseling service for those that are on, or new to, Medicare. This is a valuable resource for those seeking education and understanding of the various parts of Medicare, the programs that can help an individual save money while on Medicare, guidance and enrollment into Medicare Advantage or Part D plans, as well as a place to turn for any other questions, appeals or for those in search of volunteer opportunities.

There is a SHIP in every state, though the names vary by state. All are a part of the Senior Health Assistance Program (SHAP) and have the same major objective: to provide free and unbiased Medicare counseling. In Illinois, SHIP is partnered with the Illinois Department on Aging (IDOA), and is the agency that provides and oversees the initial training, continuing education meetings, and ongoing support. Both LCCOA and WCSC are the sponsoring organizations in our area, housing SHIP certified staff and volunteers.

SHIP at LCCOA and WCSC At our centers we have SHIP certified employees and SHIP certified volunteers to help you during your Medicare journey. The vast majority of services we provide center

around Medicare and the programs to help you remain independent, save money, and age with dignity. We strive to help as many people as possible and to promote growth, health and independence within the programs and assistance that we provide.

Volunteer Opportunities with SHIP If you ever wanted to make a difference and enjoy volunteer work that is both challenging yet ultimately rewarding then SHIP may be the answer you are looking for. We are always looking for individuals who want to join our team as a volunteer counselor, now and in the future. LCCOA is currently taking applications for SHIP volunteers for the upcoming online training, and would love to discuss the opportunity with you. If you are in these areas you can reach out to the respective coordinator for Lee and Whiteside County, Samantha at LCCOA or Lindsay at WCSC. They will explain what it means to be a SHIP volunteer and how you would work with our agencies. A truly rewarding experience to be able to help those around you to understand Medicare and help to find the best plans for them in an unbiased assistance and education.

Federal agency providing financial help for Covid-related funeral expenses

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought overwhelming grief to many families. At FEMA, our mission is to help people before, during and after disasters. We are dedicated to helping ease some of the financial stress and burden caused by the virus.

FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID- 19-related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020.

To be eligible for funeral assistance, you must meet these conditions: • The death must have occurred in the United States, including the U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.

• The death certificate must indicate the death was attributed to or caused

by COVID-19.

• The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or qualified alien who incurred funeral expenses after January 20, 2020.

• There is no requirement for the deceased person to have been a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or qualified alien.

Which expenses will qualify for reimbursement?

Examples of eligible expenses for funeral services and interment or cremation may include, but not limited to: • Transportation for up to two people to identify the deceased individual • The transfer of remains, a casket or urn • A burial plot or cremation niche • A marker or headstone • Clergy or officiant services • The arrangement of a funeral ceremony • The use of funeral home equipment or staff • Cremation or interment costs

• Costs associated with producing multiple death certificates What information do I need to provide to FEMA? Please have the following information before contacting FEMA to apply: • Your name, social security number, date of birth, mailing address and contact phone numbers.

• The name, social security number and date of birth for each deceased individual.

• The location or address where the deceased individual passed away.

• Documentation and receipts for any assistance already received from other sources, including burial or funeral insurance, donations, voluntary agencies, other government programs or non-profit organizations.

• If you and another person both incurred funeral expenses for the same deceased individual(s), you can also provide that person as a co-applicant — include their name, social security number and date of birth on the application.

The LCCOA spring FUNDrive continues into May The FUNDrive is gathering gently used mens, womens and childrens clothing for all seasons. The drive is also collecting blankets, covers and sheets, shoes and sneakers, belts and purses of all shapes and sizes. The deadline for gathering is Monday, May 10. (Please use 13-gallon bags, or 30-gallon bags if you have them.) If you have any
