A Homecoming parade Four hard quarters lead Storm past Sherrard in Manlius

MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley Storm have had one mission besides winning in mind all season and that’s to put four solid quarters of football together.

They did just that as BV turned Friday’s rain-soaked affair in Manlius into a full four quarters and a 34-21 Homecoming victory over the Sherrard Tigers.

“We’ve talked about playing four hard quarters and our guys came out and executed tonight,” BV coach Spencer Davis said. “We slowed down there in the middle when they made adjustments, but we countered what they were doing and our kids were able to take advantage of some of their miscues.”

BV started out showing their strength on both offense and defense as the Storm defense forced a three and out and two fumbles in the first three Sherrard Tiger possessions which the BV offense turned into 14 points at the other end of the field.

The BV defense came through big in more ways than one on the night as they also faced a fourth and four from their own 12-yard-line with a two-touchdown advantage as senior linebacker Hunter Schoff and junior defensive lineman Alex Peck stuffed the Sherrard runner at the line of

scrimmage to preserve the 14-0 first quarter BV edge.

“We liked what we saw tonight on both sides of the ball but we especially made some solid plays that kept us in the game on defense,” Davis said. “Our seniors and our upperclassmen really stepped it up tonight and showed some heart.”

Despite having a 56-yard punt return touchdown called back, BV junior wideout Bryan Herr would not be denied paydirt as he got a little help from his team as they marched down the field and junior quarterback Drake Davis found a leaping Herr in the left corner of the end zone for a 15-yard strike and a 28-7 Storm lead with 6:44 to play in the fourth quarter.

BV gained a lot of ground on the legs of Davis with 18 carries for 136 yards that included a 59-yard scamper but the real damage came from senior running back Caje Peterson as he bulldozed his way to 39 yards on 13 carries and pounded in two scores, one from five yards out and one from nine yards out.

“Caje played a heck of a game on both sides of the ball,” Davis said.

“He ran the ball extremely well on a sloppy night like this. We’d ask him to manage the ball on the offense and then he came back and made some nice plays on the defensive side of the ball as well.”

Sterling rolls Foxes Warriors defense able to stop long drives in crossover win

STERLING – Every Sterling drive but one ended in Yorkville territory, and every Sterling drive except two resulted in points as the Golden Warriors beat the Foxes 41-0 on Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Two touchdowns from Andrew Spaulding, two more from Latrell Vaughn, a Trey Morse score on a read option, and a pair of Tony Diaz field goals provided the offense, and the defense made sure it was more than enough, pitching their second shutout of the season.

“We know it’s really important to score early, so after the first one, we really wanted it after that,” Spaulding said. “We just kept pushing it hard.”

Spaulding finished with 61 yards on 14 carries. Nyrel Sullivan and Vaughn each gained 89 yards.

Yorkville threatened with its first drive of the game, reaching the Sterling 22-yard line on nine straight rushing plays before Trevor King intercepted a pass at the goal line.

“They kind of came right at us early on,” Sterling coach Jon Sch-

lemmer said. “They’re probably the most physical team that we’ve seen this year. For us to be able to clamp down, we had some kids make some big plays at the right time. Even on some of those long drives that they had, we were able to make plays to stop them.”

Alek Duran picked off a pass early in the second quarter to set Sterling up at the Yorkville 33-yard line. Sterling also recovered a fumble in Yorkville territory.

“We’ve got to take the ball away,” Schlemmer said. “That’s something we preach in practice, and our kids do a great job.”

The Foxes reached the Sterling 5-yard line later in the first half, but went backward thanks to a pair of penalties and wound up punting on fourth-and-goal from the 29. Sterling O-line sparks attack T

rey Morse had plenty of time, Sterling running backs had plenty of room, and the Warriors had plenty of success moving the ball down the field Friday.

As four different backs gained 60 or more yards, they gave credit to the guys up front who paved the way.

“I wouldn’t be anywhere without my line, obviously,” Andrew Spaulding said.

Running behind that line, the Golden Warriors’ backs recorded 319 rushing yards on 55 carries, an average of 5.8 yards every time Sterling ran the ball.

Morse was not sacked in the game. The quarterback scrambled twice, both for long gains, but those were due more to receivers being covered downfield than pressure on him from the Foxes’ defensive line.

The line features juniors like Tyler Willman, Tyler Hanrahan, and Michael Eberhardt, as well as sophomore John Rahn.

“Our line, we may not be the biggest, but we know what our assignments are,” Willman said.

“Our coaches have us prepared for just about anything.”

Willman credits a lot of that success to preparation, especially from the multiple looks the offensive line will get in practice throughout the week from the scout team.

“Either way they go, we’re ready to block it because we’ve practiced it,” Willman said. “Our guys know where they need to be.”

With the big-play ability of some of the backs, sometimes where the offensive line needs to be is downfield. Nyrel Sullivan had a 24-yard carry to set up Sterling’s third touchdown Friday. Latrell Vaughn’s first carry of the night went for 64 yards and set up a touchdown by Spaulding three plays later.

“I think the biggest part for us is getting to that second level,” Willman said. “With our running backs, they’re able to get to that second level. If we’re not able to get to the second level and open up holes for them, they’re not able to run free.”

Through the air Dixon’s Wilcox throws for three TDs in win over Stillman

STILLMAN VALLEY – Noah Wilcox knows the importance of the quarterback position. That’s why he tries so hard to not make any mistakes.

The Dixon quarterback succeeded at doing just that, and was nearly perfect Friday in a Big Northern win over host Stillman Valley, 26-18.

“I have to keep my composure at all times,” Wilcox said. “I need to be the rock that the guys look to when things aren’t going our way.”

It didn’t bother Wilcox that a number of snaps hit the soggy grass before his hands, and he didn’t seem to care that a small window was closing when he threw pass after pass into tight coverage.

All part of the plan.

Wilcox hooked up with six different receivers for 213 yards and three touchdowns. His 18-for-25 effort kept the Cardinals’ defense honest, and allowed running back Arthur Cox to wiggle and rumble his way to a big game on the ground.

The Dukes (5-1) scored on their first two possessions. Jared Harrison caught a 63-yard scoring pass, then Wilcox found Jake Pitman for an 11-yard strike. His third TD pass was to Cox for 56 yards on the first possession of the second half.

“It’s all about trust,” Wilcox said. “All of these guys have great hands, and I know they’re going to get open. I just have to put it where they can catch it.”

Dixon’s big-play ability was important, because the Cardinals coudn’t be stopped on the ground. Fullback Brady Atchison ran for 193 yards on 35 carries, part of a 291-yard rushing attack.

The Cardinals (1-5) kept it close, and even had a chance to go ahead with a field-goal try late in the fourth, but opted to go for it on fourth-and-4 and were stopped.

That’s when Cox, who ran for 125 yards, added another big play and capped the scoring with a 27-yard run.

“We had them,” Atchison said.

“But their defense made some plays, and we keep hurting ourselves. Dixon put together a few big scoring plays, and we couldn’t match it.”

Old-school football at its finest I

t was an old-school kind of football night in Stillman Valley.

First there was a persistent mist that made it seem as if Dixon and the Cardinals were playing in a thick fog. Poor conditions during a football game always seem to add another layer of fun.

There was the power running game, and, oh, was it powerful. Then there was defense, the type of defense that reminds you that both sides of the ball can win games.

Bending, but not breaking Long drives, short field send Newman to victory

PRINCETON — There would be no upset again when Princeton and Sterling Newman met on the gridiron Friday at Bryant Field. The Comets defense wouldn’t let the Tigers have a chance.

The Comets seized a 24-8 halftime lead and their defense held firm in the second half, shutting the Tigers out en route a 38-8 victory in Three Rivers Mississippi Conference play.

“Very happy with a our defense.

Again we bent, but didn’t break.

Came up with big made plays when we needed to. I thought that was the difference,” Newman coach Mike Papoccia said. “We had some turnovers that really helped us there especially on their second possession and we had a short field. We rolled in the first half, offensively.

“Second half, I thought we were a little flat. We’ve been like that for some one reason in some of our games. I told our kids we’ve got to learn to put people away, at least keep the pressure on them. I really didn’t think we did a whole lot of that in second half.”

The Comets mounted a 15 play, 75-yard scoring drive the first time they touched the ball. Eli Leffelman cashed in with a 2-yard touchdown run. Landen Vesley passed to John

Wilson to put the Comets ahead 8-0 at the 5:38 mark of the first quarter.

Princeton fumbled the ball right back to the Comets on first down at the Tiger 33. Nine plays later, Chase Graham crashed in from 1-yard and added the conversion run to make it 16-0.

“I think that took a little wind out of their sails, because they were a little hyped up at the begin. We got up two scores and I think that got them thinking a little,” Papoccia said.

The Tigers got on the board when quarterback Garrett Allen took advantage of the 6-foot-7 frame of senior end Colton Youngren, who hauled down a 9-yard touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone.

Point, counterpoint Marcos’ defense refuses to bend much less break against Missiles

POLO – Argument: A football team can thrive with a defense that bends but doesn’t break.

Counter-argument: A team can be yet more successful if its defense doesn’t even bend.

Polo was a living embodiment of that counter-argument Friday night, completely choking the offense of an upstart Milledgeville squad in a 13-0 victory.

Polo, having given up at least 28 points in each of its past three games, looked like an entirely new team this week, limiting the Missiles (4-2) to 2.1 yards per play and nine first downs in the game. Milledgeville entered the red zone only once, and ran just 11 of its 57 plays in Polo territory.

“This is huge for us. The kids believe they can win now,” Polo coach Jeff Bumsted said. “We were questioning ourselves a little bit. This gives them some confidence, and they’re ready to roll now, I think. I hope.”

The defense of the Marcos (4-2) was so stout, that even though the score was just 6-0 for the first three quarters, the lead felt pretty safe to those in attendance. Then, when running back Tristen Aguilar burst through an enormous hole on the right side side for a 48-yard touchdown early in the fourth, that lead seemed

thoroughly insurmountable.

“We had the kids in the right spot at the right time,” Bumsted said.

“We had them moving at the right times. We set up a game plan, and it worked.”

Aguilar finished with 80 yards on 10 carries and scored both Polo touchdowns. The big run in the fourth was an entire game in the making, Bumsted said.

The Marcos had called the play that sprung Aguilar several times earlier in the game, with quarterback Braiden Soltow given the authority to either hand the ball off or keep it in the Marcos zone-read offensive set. Based on his reads, Soltow had called his own number each time, but the coaching staff, mainly offensive coach Hank Grobe, suspected that Aguilar would have room.

“Coach Grobe told him, ‘Just give it,’” Bumsted said. “We put the ball in [Aguilar’s] hands, and he did the job.”

The loss marks the second year in a row that Milledgeville has lost to Polo after starting the season 4-1.

Like last year, the remaining schedule isn’t particularly easy, with undefeated Stockton next week and a tough Dakota squad in Week 8. A winnable game against Warren in Week 9 could hold huge postseason implications depending on playoff points.

Mistakes matter Rock Falls’ miscues add up to blowout loss to Winnebago

WINNEBAGO – With the playoff berth window closing inches at a time, the Rock Falls Rockets had plenty of things go wrong at the wrong time Friday night.

Dropped passes on offense and wide-open holes on defense worked hand-in-hand against the Rockets in a 48-16 loss to the Winnebago Indians at Colburn Athletic Field.

Despite throwing for 304 yards, Rockets quarterback Logan Pillars completed just 17 of 42 passes, and threw two interceptions in the first half.

With 2 minutes to go in the second quarter, Kenzell Jones had a good read on a deep rightside pass and ran it back nearly

50 yards to set up the Indians’ fourth scoring drive.

After trailing 26-0 at halftime, the passing tries by the Rockets (3-3, 3-3 BNC) increased but misfired plenty of times during the third quarter, as Pillars completed just three of his first 13 second-half passes.

The Indians (4-2, 3-2) extended their lead to 34-0 before Pillars found senior teammate Michael Berentes for a 40-yard score with 1:57 left in the third.

“When they got up big,” Berentes said, “it got into our heads, and I didn’t think we were focused enough as we usually are. Usually we don’t drop a lot of passes. I just think it got to our heads and we got a little angry.”

While Berentes believed a lack of focus by the receiving

corps made for the plenty of misses, the Indians had plenty of focus with their running game. They found the bigenough holes to manufacture scoring runs and tallied 376 rushing yards on 43 carries, scoring four TDs. “It’s frustrating because you think you have everything where you need to be, and know what we need to do,” Rockets coach Rich Montgomery said. “I just didn’t get it across to them defensively where we needed to be, and what we needed to do.”

Roger Carlson, who came into the game as the Rockets’ lead receiver, was quiet throughout most of the game, save for three catches for 69 yards. He had his team’s only other score on a 28-yard completion with 7:21 to go in the game.

PROPHETSTOWN – Two speeds of football were being played on Friday night at Mosher Field.

One was being played by Braidy Shipp and the St. Bede Bruins, and the other by the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers.

The high-speed Bruins wasted little time scoring, and they did it often in a 56-7 Three Rivers Mississippi win.

Quarterback Bryant Eustice connected with Shipp on touchdown passes of 43 and 40 yards late in the second quarter, as the Bruins (4-2, 4-0) extended their lead beyond 40 points.

“Braidy is playing his fourth year on varsity, and you can tell that the game is slower for him than most of the rest of us,” Eustice said. “He just able to do some great things.”

Shipp caught five passes for 143 yards, all in the first half. St. Bede played the second half with their second- and third-string players. Eustice threw for 171 yards, completeing eight of his nine pass attempts.

“We had a lot of big plays tonight,” St. Bede coach Jim

Eustice said. “So much of high school football is about momentum. I think we grabbed that early.

I really respect that program over there, and didn’t expect it to go this way.”

St. Bede only needed eight plays to score its first four touchdowns, all in the first quarter.

On the second play of the game, Adam Poundstone skirted past the tackles of Erie-Prophetstown (1-5, 1-2) defenders for a 55-yard touchdown run.

After picking up three first downs, the Panthers were forced to punt. St. Bede’s Nick Szczepaniak returned Nathan Pierceson’s punt 85 yards for a TD. Justin Darnell scored on a 37 run, and Bryant Eustice scored on a 29 TD run to put St. Bede up 28-0 after one quarter.
