Homecoming spoiler Red Devils still looking for first win after 7 games SPRING VALLEY — The Riverdale Rams rolled into town and ruined the Hall Red Devils’ homecoming as they came away with a 40-14 victory Friday at Richard Nesti Stadium.

“I don’t feel like we came out ready to play and I don’t know what the problem with that was,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said.

“Our kids just didn’t seem like they were ready to play tonight.”

From the opening kickoff the Hall Red Devils looked defeated as they came out lethargically to open the game and spotted the Rams an early 8-0 lead on a 31-yard run from junior running back Parker Corson.

The Rams then poured it on as senior running back Brady Secrist took control of the Ram running game and punched in the next three scores of the game to bust the competition wide open at 28-0 with 2:30 to play in the first half.

“It was nothing that shocked us.

It was exactly what we prepared for all week and I don’t feel like we stepped up and played like we were supposed to,” Tieman said.

“I feel like we prepared like we normally do every week but we still took a huge step backwards.”

The touchdown was Secrist’s third of the half but he had plenty more in the tank. He punched in two more second half touchdowns from three and two yards for a five touchdown night.

The Red Devils threatened to score twice in the first half but it was all for naught as two turnovers in the Rams’ half of the field handed the ball right back to the Rams.

“We adjusted as we went along and we have to be able to finish drives,” Tieman said. “We have to be able to stop the other team and get the ball back and we can’t give up 9 minute drives.”

Hall sophomore running back Anthony Buchanon got his opportunity to show his football prowess as he took his nine rushing opportunities and turned them into 105 yards and two scores including a 14-yard dash BCR photo/Dan Dwyer in the fourth quarter.

ROCHELLE – Sterling was special in many areas on Friday night against Rochelle, nowhere more so than on special teams.

The Golden Warriors scored on a pair of punt returns to spark a second-quarter outburst, and Sterling rolled to a 35-7 victory against the Hubs in a key Northern Illinois Big 12 West contest.

Sterling (7-0, 3-0) can win an outright conference title with a home win against Ottawa next week.

“We knew what the stakes were going to be,” sophomore Alek Duran said. “We came in here, and we knew it was a big game in conference. It was their senior night, they were going to step up, but we just took care of business.”

Duran got the Warriors’ first TD on special teams with a 44-yard return early in the second quarter. There was a penalty on the play, and after a few anxious moments, it was determined the foul was on Rochelle, so the score stood, and made it 14-0.

“We prep all week, and it’s just something else we prepare for,” Duran said. “I know that my guys up front are going to protect me, and I knew I just had to follow

them all the way to the end zone.”

Late in the first half, Sterling burned a pair of timeouts hoping to get the ball back for its offense.

As it turned out, it gave the Warriors’ special teams another chance to shine.

Elias Edmondson received the punt and went virtually untouched down the left sideline for a 49-yard score to make it 28-0 at halftime. The two punt returns brought a smile to the face of head coach Jon Schlemmer.

“Somebody at halftime told me it’s been 7 years since we scored on special teams,” Schlemmer said.

“It’s been a long time, and we got two in a quarter. That was huge.”

A team built for the long haul R

ochelle – I’ve seen this before. I saw this back in my high school days, with some of the Amboy teams of the early and mid 1980s. I saw it at my first post-college job, when I covered Geneseo football for five seasons.

And I’ve seen it many times during my time at Sauk Valley Media, primarily from various Newman and Bureau Valley squads over the years.

Sterling has the look of a team that can do some serious damage in the postseason. The latest example of that came Friday night, when the Golden Warriors took it to a solid Rochelle team and posted a 35-7 victory.

The domination was complete.

The offense churned out 346 yards, and didn’t rely on any one player to carry the load. There is a 3-headed monster in the backfield with Andrew Spaulding, Latrell Vaughn and Nyrel Sullivan divvying up the carries, and quarterback Trey Morse always seems to make the right decision back there, whether it’s carrying out fakes or throwing high-percentage passes.

They operate behind an offensive line that simply creates holes.

ness and toughness across the board. Usually powerful rushing attacks from Geneseo and Rochelle have been stifled the last 2 weeks - a rare achievement in this league.

Special team play for the Golden Warriors is usually highlighted by the powerful and accurate right leg of kicker Tony Diaz, but not on Friday. There were punt returns for scores by Alek Duran and Elias Edmondson.

Once future opponents get a look at that, it will be interesting to see how many more opportunities those two get.

Friday’s win put Sterling in the driver’s seat to win a NIB12 West title, but I’m thinking those involved are aiming higher. The ingredients are there for an extended playoff run, and who knows, perhaps a taste of Champaign 2 days after Thanksgiving.

Line tames Tigers Comets dominate up front in Three Rivers Mississippi rout

STERLING – Newman Comets senior Eli Leffelman did it all Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Leffelman scored two touchdowns on the ground and grabbed two interceptions on defense as he helped the Comets beat the Sherrard Tigers 36-7 in Three Rivers Mississippi play.

“We always go into the game with the mentality of playing hard every play and when you play hard every play, good things happen for you,” Leffelman said. “That’s what I tried doing tonight.”

Newman’s offensive line overpowered Sherrard’s defensive line, which helped the Comets gain 275 yards on the ground.

Junior Cade Gorzny added 85 yards on nine rushes, and junior Landen Vesley added 67 yards on nine rushes and a touchdown.

“Our line goes hard all the time,” Leffelman said. “Our line is really coming together, and they are getting better every single week.

The holes are getting wider.”

Because Newman did all of their damage on the ground, they only had 26 passing yards.

8-yard score late in the game.

The Comets (7-0, 4-0) jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead over the Tigers (1-6, 1-3) and never looked back.

Sherrard’s lone score came with 7:46 left in the game when senior Nick Shea broke lose for a 62-yard score.

“I thought our defense was tremendous,” Newman coach Mike Papoccia said. “We shut down their running game. They have been a pretty good offensive team, and they have good backs, and I thought we did a heck of a job.”

Senior Aaron Scroggins lead the defense with ten tackles, including one for a loss. Sophomore Chase Graham chipped in with eight tackles and two sacks.

“Our defense is like a puzzle,” Leffelman said. “Everyone just fills their piece and it all comes together.”

And despite the outcome, Papoccia was impressed with Sherrard.

They may have recently snapped a 15-game losing streak, but that is not the same Tigers team Papoccia was used to seeing.

“That is the best Sherrard team we’ve played in a couple years,” he said. “They finished hard and never gave up. In past years, they would’ve given up.”

Cogs hog dance floor Dixon offense stalls out against BNC front-runner

DIXON – Noah Wilcox likely has a full dance card for Saturday’s Homecoming dance at Dixon High School.

With 1:38 left in Friday’s game against the undefeated GenoaKingston Cogs, Dixon’s quarterback dropped back on first down with the Dukes trying to make a late comeback.

Wilcox practiced his best moves for Saturday to try and elude defenders, but there were too many Genoa-Kingston suitors interested more in tackling him than dancing. The sack started the drive, which ended a few moments later with an incomplete pass.

The Dukes’ offense never found any rhythm in a 14-6 loss to the Big Northern West front-runners.

“That was a battle,” GenoaKingston coach Bill McCarty said.

“Both defenses played very well. I can’t compliment them enough.

It was just a tough game.”

The Cogs (7-0, 7-0) started fast with a 32-yard pass from Zach Butler to Zach Miller on their first offensive play. Six plays later, Butler connected with

Justin McNeal for an 19-yard touchdown pass.

“They did the things we practiced for,” Dixon defense lineman Ryan Troutman said. “We just didn’t come out doing the things on defense to stop them.

As the game went on, we did a better job of containing their quarterback.”

Genoa-Kingston went up by two scores with 5:27 left in the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Aidan Simmons. The run capped an eight-play, 58-yard drive.

“I think the defense played well all game,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “Our offense put them in some bad spots in the first half.

Our offense never really got moving.”

FULTON – The proverbial phrase “tale of two halves” couldn’t be more true in Fulton’s 42-34 Three Rivers Rock win over Bureau Valley at Steamer Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Steamers (6-1, 4-0 TRAC Rock) and Storm (4-3, 0-3) combined for 76 points and 11 touchdowns.

Michael Pidde provided five scores of his own, including two in a row to break turn a 14-12 Steamers’ lead into a game well in their favor on senior night.

“It was our sixth win, which officially put us in the playoffs,” Pidde said. “Our offensive line did fantastic. They went down and knew how hard their defense was coming, and they did an awesome job.”

The scoreless half featured eight tackles for loss from the Steamers, four fumbles from the Storm (one loss), two more Storm turnovers and one more by the Steamers.

On two occasions the Storm made it to the Fulton 1-yard line: Caje Peterson’s 30-yard

rush around right end was coughed up and recovered by Fulton’s Brody Mason at the 1 with 1:06 to go in the first quarter, and Cole McClary’s third sack of the half helped deny the other try.

Pidde kicked off the scoring with a 5-yard run — one of three such scoring runs for the senior on the night — with 9:37 to go in the third quarter.

That run came after first-down plays of 20 yards on the ground, and 27 yards on a catch before punching it in.

Austin Schroeder had a 90-yard kickoff return after Storm QB Drake Davis threw to Payton Moore for a 70-yard TD. Davis later added a 70-yarder of his own on a TD run.

Schroeder nearly had a 46-yard touchdown run with 3:15 to go in the third, but it was called back due to an illegal procedure penalty on the Steamers.

But Schroeder answered with a 44-yard reception to the Storm 5. There, Pidde ran for his second 5-yard score of the night to go up 20-12.

“Everyone just got up and went,” Pidde said. “We were playing for the seniors on senior night, and it was a big No. 6 win.

Bad breaks at Hinders Rockets lose grip on football, game against Cardinals

ROCK FALLS – Fortune has two sides. The good one showed its promising face to the Rockets at the start of the second half, and the bad one reared its ugly head in the closing minutes of their 30-29 loss to Stillman Valley on Friday at Hinders Field.

The Rockets (3-4, 3-4 Big Northern West) crept within a point at 14-13 on a 45-yard pass from Logan Pillars to Roger Carlson with 30 seconds left in the first half. With Rock Falls getting the ball to start the second half, the momentum shift was palpable.

“We had all the momentum in the world going into halftime,” Carlson said.

On the opening drive of the second half, Pillars play-faked to Isaiah Harris on a triple-option, neared the line of scrimmage and turned loose a deep ball to a wideopen Carlson, only to have it tip off his fingertips and into the waiting arms of teammate Brennan Mammosser. The Rockets took their first lead at 21-14, but …

“We just couldn’t use that momentum to do what we needed to do,” Carlson said.

The Cardinals (2-5, 2-4)

answered on the third of Brady Atchison’s four touchdowns, and the Rockets responded with Pillars’ second TD rush, this one a 1-yard sneak on fourth-and-goal.

Minutes later, on a Cardinals fourth-and-goal from the Rock Falls 1, Atchison appeared to be stuffed by noseguard Travis Delgado, but used a second effort to find the end zone, making it 30-29 with 10:13 to play. Atchison finished with 244 yards on 43 carries.

The teams traded empty possessions before Pillars engineered a promising drive to the Stillman 44 before coughing up the ball trying to stretch for extra yardage.

The defense forced another threeand-out, but on the first play of the following drive, Pillars tattooed a pass on a wide-open Mammosser, who tried to tuck the ball away but lost it. Those two fumbles were the only turnovers of the game.

Thunder struck Plattenberger leads West Carroll to upset of East Dubuque

West Carroll beat East Dubuque 43-0 as Kaleb Plattenberger ran 18 times for 174 yards, rushing for two touchdowns and reeling in a 30-yard scoring pass from Kody Plattenberger in the shutout win in Savanna.

The Thunder led 16-0 at halftime before pulling away with 20 points in the third quarter.

Kaleb Hartman also rushed for a score, Devon Murray scored on a fumble recovery, and Logan Barker ran in a touchdown from 11 yards out.

River Ridge 42, AFC 22: Marcelo Diaz scored four touchdowns and rushed for the Wildcats in the win.

Stephen Brooke gained 118 yards on the ground for the Raiders and completed a pass for 34 yards.

Brooke’s touchdown to end the third quarter brought AFC to within eight at 22-14, but River Ridge scored 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Dylan Jeanblanc broke a 70-yard kick return for a score for AFC. Aquin 34, Polo 20: Aquin scored 20 unanswered points to beat the Marcos.

After a back-and-forth first

Fischer priceless EPC receiver catches three long TDs to down Clippers

AMBOY – With an imposing offensive line, a potential Division-I talent lined up at quarterback, and multiple standout ball carriers, there’s more talent on Eastland-Pearl City’s offense than room to print.

Sometimes, though, a performance like the one Skylar Fischer had Friday comes along and simply puts most of the attention upon itself.

While his team was struggling to put a frisky Amboy team away for nearly three-and-half quarters, Fischer kept the Clippers at arm’s length by recording three long receiving touchdowns – from two different quarterbacks – adding a key interception on defense for good measure. Eventually, the Wildcatz, undefeated and ranked fifth in Class 2A, finally put Amboy away 34-13.

With the Wildcatz (7-0) leading just 14-7, Fischer turned a screen pass into a 55-yard touchdown on his team’s third play in the second half.

“We ran it last week on the first play, and we scored on it,” said Fischer, who finished with 179 receiving yards. “So we ran it again today. It’s a good play. It’s wide open once you get the linemen [downfield].”

The Clippers (2-5) weren’t done, though. Dallas Schafter bulldozed his way into the endzone early in

the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 20-13, and the Clippers immediately forced a three-and-out to get the ball back with nine minutes remaining. Fischer, however, reclaimed the momentum for EPC with an interception, and Keegan Schubert scored a dagger of a touchdown a few plays later to put the game out of reach. Schubert had 174 yards and two scores on 19 carries.

Fischer then put the final nail in the coffin with a 42-yard reception from sophomore backup quarterback Braden Smargiassi. The win sets up an enormous showdown next week with unbeaten Forreston, the thirdranked team in Class 2A. “There’s a lot of work to be done for next week,” Fischer said. “We’ve got to execute our offense.”

The Clippers, with perhaps the toughest schedule in the Northern Upstate Illini, fought valiantly for their playoff lives, but the loss seemingly puts them out of reach for an atlarge berth. A looming teacher strike threatens to inject some chaos into the playoff pool by ostensibly eliminating more than a dozen potential teams from the Chicago Public league. If that were to occur, wins by the Clippers over Pecatonica and Aquin to close the season would possibly give Amboy a chance, though at this point, nothing is clear.

Cards take inside track Forreston picks up first home win vs. Lena-Winslow

FORRESTON – Speedsters Gavin Fuchs and AJ Christensen came into Friday’s game against Lena-Winslow averaging 19 and 11 yards a carry for Forreston.

The Panthers’ game plan held the pair to under 40 combined yards rushing, effectively shutting down the outside ground game.

However, in the battle of 1A stateranked opponents, Forreston used its inside attack of fullback quick hitters, quarterback sneaks and halfback counters to pull out a 13-7 win. It was Forreston’s first-ever win at home against LeWin in eight games.

“It was definitely a defensive win,” Forreston coach Denny Diduch said. “Nothing came easy. They are just as fast as us.”

With the score tied 7-7 late in the third quarter, Hunter Daws scored the winning touchdown on a 3-yard quarterback keeper.

“I saw an open field, so I faked it to AJ, who got tackled by two Le-Win players,” Daws said. “Their corners were playing hard on the edges, and the ends were crashing down. The whole game it was tough getting outside.”

The Panthers drove into Forreston territory twice in the fourth quarter, but Tyler Bryant stopped Payden Lingle one yard short on a fourth down, and Sam Barkalow forced an errant pass on another fourth down.

The biggest defensive stand by the Cardinals came with less than a minute left in the first half.

After Lingle scored on a 27-yard run to tie the game, Le-Win got the ball back on a punt. An 11-play drive set up a fourthand-goal at the 1-yard line.

Lingle’s number was called, but he was popped short of the goal line, fumbling the ball into the end zone. After a scramble, Lane Henneman, who earlier had an interception, recovered it for Forreston.

“The whole first quarter, we had opportunities,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said. “I was not happy to be 7-7 at half with the way we controlled field position.”

Early in the game, a Forreston fumble gave the ball to Le-Win at Forreston’s 16-yard line. But the Cardinals defense held.

The high-scoring Panthers only had 160 yards of total offense, while Forreston gained all 262 of its yards rushing, mostly between the tackles.

“We didn’t do anything flashy on defense,” Forreston defensive coordinator Kyle Zick said. “We played hard for all four quarters.”

Leading rusher Matt Akins capped of a 12-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down for a 7-0 Forreston lead. It took 15 seconds for the officials to rule that Akins was over by the length of a football.
