IXON – What was meant to be a temporary memorial to World War I veterans is observing its centennial.

There have been four versions of the Dixon Memorial Arch, but it has remained around the same location, the 200 block of Galena Avenue, for 100 years.

Local historian Duane Paulsen, 84, is the lone survivor of a committee formed in 1979 dedicated to the establishment of the current version, completed in 1985.

“It’s Dixon’s identity,” Paulsen said. “It’s remembered for the arch.”

Company G of Dixon’s National Guard unit was called into action when the United States declared war on Germany in April 1917, however, troops weren’t sent overseas for 11 more months. About 1,500 soldiers from Lee County participated in the war, 382 of whom were from Dixon.

After doing their part to hold off German forces in France, and eventually helping the Allied Powers win the war, Dixon’s troops came home on June 12, 1919.

“They were among the first 100,000 Yankees to go overseas,” Paulsen said.

“They were followed closely over there. Even though a lot more men there were taken into the service [in the company], it was Dixon’s home unit.”

Between 20,000 to 25,000 people crowded downtown Dixon and near the county courthouse and the Nachusa Home, which was at the top of the hill on Galena Avenue, to welcome the servicemen home. Speeches were made at the balcony of the Nachusa Home, chosen so that the voices could resonate throughout the area.

Arches were a fad at the time, made so because motor vehicle traffic – then still a fairly new concept – would drive under them.

Dixon’s first arch was dedicated that day; it went over Galena Avenue just south of the intersection with Second Street, near the old Post Office.

“They wanted to have it near where the speaker would be, and also wanted it to be on their main road, which is the Lincoln Highway,” Paulsen said.

It contained a message that could be seen seen fom the south as travelers headed north: “A grateful people pause in their welcome to the victorious living to pay silent tribute to the illustrious dead.”

One more message, painted in later years, read: “Dixon honors and welcomes all who have served.”

The first and second arches had the red, white and blue Lincoln Highway logo painted on their base.

If it weren’t for many years of crude fixes to the original 1919 structure, a replacement likely wouldn’t have been possible – it had cables hooked at various directions to buildings to hold it in place, Paulsen said.

Similar structures elsewhere were removed after a certain time – including an arch in Sterling at East Third Street near First Avenue.

Dixon’s second arch was completed 1949, and was widened in 1965 when Galena Avenue expanded to four lanes. It was built at a garage near presentday Dixon High School, and hauled to the site.

“They made it there and loaded it onto a utility truck with poles,” Paulsen said. “They had guys sitting on top with rubber gloves to hold the wires while they moved it down Boyd Street to Galena and to the foundation.”

Once at its destination, cranes were used to hoist it into place.

“It took them an hour and a half to move it. It would have been quite a sight.”

The main feature of the second arch was the red neon lights that illuminated the word “Dixon” at night. While the wiring and bulbs have changed over the years, the lighting apparatus was transferred to the current arch and remains to this day.

The bulk of the arch didn’t last as long as the lighting. Like its predecessor, it was made of wood and was patched up at times, and extensively during its 1965 widening. By 1979, the wood was noticeably deteriorating.

Dr. James Collins, a local veterinarian and member of a local bank’s savings and loan board, stopped at the stoplight intersection near under the arch, and noticed enough decay to want to take action. He went to the city to address his concerns; they formed a committee and named him chairman. Collins recruited Paulsen.

“They didn’t use treated lumber, and after a while they rotted away,” Paulsen said. “The ’65 arch was getting in bad shape. We had to take it

down, and it was to be repaired. They took it over to Turnroth Sign Co. in Rock Falls, and when they took the metal off, it was rotten in the base.

“That meant we had to go back to the drawing board, raise money, and we built the new one. This one is made of fiberglass.”

That structure, which came in six sections and was set up at the top of the hill on Galena Avenue, was made to last 50 to 100 years, but Paulsen can’t help but notice issues with it, 34 years later.

Some of the letters don’t light up, and “it needs cleaning, and painting on the base,” Paulsen said. “The city has to take the responsibility.” n

Arnould and her husband, Adam, 31, a lieutenant in the Dixon City Fire Department, have a infant daughter, Adaline, who comes to work with Mom a few days a week. Arnould won’t miss seeing Adaline take her first steps. “I started looking at childcare costs, and decided I couldn’t go that route, so I decided to work for myself. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.”

A doctor can fax an order for lab work to Value Lab, and the patient can stop after leaving the office.

The samples are collected by certified professionals then sent to a testing facility, with the results faxed back to the doctor’s office within 24 hours. No insurance is needed, and all the work is 100% confidential.

Fellow phlebotomist Connie Asher, who retired from CGH in August after about 20 years, fills in for Arnould when she needs time off.

Wetzell, of Rock Falls, was a receptionist at CGH when Arnould asked her to join Value Lab. “I really liked Caroline and wanted to keep working with her,” Wetzell said. “We’d had experience working together.”

She also likes the concept behind Value Lab. “I like that people can take their health into their own hands,” Wetzell said.

“If you aren’t getting answers from your doctor, you can go with your ‘gut’ and have yourself tested. Our work reduces your need to make appointments to see the doctor, when they are going to just prescribe tests, anyway.

Arnould comes from an entrepreneurial family: Her father, Scott Burkitt, owns Pfoutz Plumbing and Heating in Franklin Grove, and her mom, Linda Burkitt, owns Tipsy’s Bar and Grill in downtown Dixon.

“Mom started in that space as the original owner of Stuff for 11 years, which changed to Bloomin’ Stuff, and is now Tipsy’s,” she said.

“I learned how to work from watching my parents. If someone didn’t show up, they had to

go in. They were there every day. Middle-of-thenight calls, problems, all of it, they were there.”

Arnould is proud that Value Lab is owned and run by women, but they didn’t do it alone.

“I worked with Emily Zimmerman in the Small Business Development Center at Sauk Valley Community College. She helped me get a business plan together, connect with the bank, and introduced me to the owner of this building.”

Her Dixon connections helped, too.

“It’s so hard for the average person to know what to do when starting a business. Dixon Main Street offers a $5,000 microgrant, and I was referred to a bank for partial financing, and other practical support.”

Anytime Arnould can get her name out to the public, she is all-in.

“I have called names out of the Yellow Pages to let people know we are here, and we’ll be on a float in the Petunia Festival parade this year.” n

They accept donations of all kinds, from housewares to toys to clothes, and volunteers are always welcome. Whatever they can’t find room for in the cottage is given to Goodwill, because staff believes nothing should go to waste.

In addition to their impressive deals, they give away religious items away for free.

Many times, kids will come in with an allowance of only a few dollars and the volunteers will help them shop, and let them get more for their money.

In addition to the volunteers, Raynor Garage Door, which owns the property, and many of its employees help in any way they can, from taking out the weekly garbage to giving them a light bulb when needed.

Quadraro and Anderson are dedicated to helping people in need, so they keep their already low prices negotiable.

“If they want it and they need it, I’m going to give it to them,” Quadraro said, recalling an incident in which a woman escaping domestic violence came to them with nothing, and they provided her furniture and clothes at no cost.

That’s just one example of their kind-hearted mindset, what Anderson calls “paying it forward.” n

Longtime teacher still sharing his music with the world

D

IXON – He’s been tickling the ivories since back when they actually were made of ivory.

Music teacher Bill Hertel, 73, of Dixon, owner of Grace Notes Music Studio, has been playing piano since he was a toddler, and he started giving lessons when he was a sophomore in high school.

“I started playing when my dad would take me as a kid to the bar with him, and I’d play on the bar piano,” Hertel said.

“That is my favorite instrument. I played the baritone horn

in band in the sixth grade, and I knew from the eighth grade I wanted to be a band director.”

“I still get to do what I love. I’ve lived all over, but we moved back to Dixon because this is home.”

The studio at 94 S. Peoria Ave. is home to the piano, keyboard, and half-a-dozen band instruments. Beginner or skilled musician, Hertel can help people further develop their skills – as long as those skills don’t involve stringed instruments, which he does not teach.

He taught in the El Paso, Illinois, public school system for 5 years; in Sterling, in elementary and high school, for 23 years; and in Mattoon for 5 years.

He worked for a short time at

the now-closed Kidder Music in Sterling before opening his first music studio next to The Good Book in Dixon. Now, he is a few blocks down the street.

His students range in age from 10 to 85. Some want to learn to play hymns for church, others prefer band music, a few write their own music, and all just want to improve. One writes a song a month.

“I named my business Grace Music because it is only by the grace of God that I can continue to do what I love with very interesting people. We’ve got doctors, lawyers, police, other professionals, and the music just helps them to unwind.

“My students who have gone off to college to study another field sometimes continue their musical pursuits and join the band there. Some of them get paid to do it.”

Hertel earned his bachelor’s in music education from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1968, and married his wife, Janet, in 1969.

A piano major and trombone minor were followed by a master’s in music education from Illinois State University, and a master’s in school administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

He and Janet have a son, John, and two grandsons, 11 and 10, who play the violin and viola.

“My son worked in aerospace industry, and he told me that if they had two identical candidates for the same position, they would hire the one who had the most musical ability or inclination,” Hertel said.

“Someone with musical ability could be given a problem and solve it, they can work in a small

group, or a large group – like an orchestra.

“Other benefits include the joy of playing music and the expression of it, and the discipline you can build through practice.”

Hertel enjoys leading workshops, and also has been a guest conductor, education consultant, and music contest adjudicator.

He also is proud of the support he receives from local band directors. Through word-of-mouth advertising, he stays just about as busy as he wants to be.

His keyboard, organ, vocal and bell choirs inspired him to compose and arrange his own songs.

“The first song I wrote, ‘He Came Down from Heaven,’ we were watching ‘The Waltons’ on TV, and the character, Jason, had written a song. Two days later we were supposed to go on vacation, and I had this tune stuck in my head. I told Janet, ‘We cannot go yet; I have to write down this tune. Then we can go.’”

He’s written songs for choirs, and his vocal and accompaniment

scores from PDF files or MIDI files with MP3 are available for rehearsals and performance. Once the music is downloaded, directors can make as many copies as they need.

Three songs – “Thanks to the Father,” “He Came Down from Heaven,” and “There Was a Babe Born in Bethlehem,” are available through Northwestern Publishing House at www.nph.net. Children’s choirs especially enjoy the music and the message.

“Music has been good to me.

I teach, write, play, and through challenges with students, I learn from them as they learn from me,” he said.

“Music doesn’t just come from the head; it has to come from the heart. I am so thankful to the Lord that I can still play. It has brought me much joy.” n

And it went to a new downtown location that’s bringing in flocks of customers

D

IXON – When Mike and June Fritts opened Wings and More in February 2017 on Depot Avenue, their delicious food brought them many happy customers.

When a spot downtown, at 221 W. First St., became available, they grabbed it, and after some renovations, moved in in November 2018.

It was a good move – their customer base doubled right away.

June, 47, is from Thailand, and in 2009 she moved to Florida to help a cousin with his Thai restaurant. That’s how she and Mike met: Mike’s folks, Jim and Mary Fritts, introduced her to Mike, 62, during one of his visits to Florida.

They married a year later.

Wings and More serves traditional mild to spicy chicken wings, but that is only half the menu. The other half represents June’s heritage, and foods the Frittses like to cook and eat as a family.

Their most popular side dish is Mike’s fried rice.

“Most people think the chef is me, because I am Asian, but it’s not,” June said. “The chef is Mike.

This fried rice is going to be the talk of the town.”

Mike, a 1975 Dixon High grad, learned to cook fried rice working

in a “Chinese Thai to go” restaurant; he cooked batch after batch until he determined it was perfect.

Good cooks run in his family.

“My grandmother, Margaret Fritts, always cooked great food, and was instrumental in starting the Meals on Wheels program in Dixon with my aunt, Pauline Hermes,” Mike said.

“She would deliver food to me in her 90s, even after I became an adult.”

His mom also was a big influence.

“Two items on the menu are my mom’s chili and spaghetti. I have changed the recipe to make it our own, but the love of those dishes came from her making them all the time,” he said.

“We choose items for the menu that we like to eat.”

Among their most popular dishes are the salmon dinner, their scrumptious egg rolls, and a traditional pot roast.

“We never have any leftovers,” June said with a smile. “When I log into Facebook, I am happy to see all the great response we are getting for our food. People we don’t even know yet are repeat customers, and I cannot wait to meet them and thank them.”

Wings and More also offers a range of sauces, nearly 30 in all, some invented by customers, and one that’s June’s signature sauce.

June learned to cook from her mother, who also sent her to cooking school.

“Her mom is a phenomenal cook, and she prepares everything from scratch,” Mike said.

“I tell [him] to think of his favorite person when he cooked,” Mike said. “Make everything like you were cooking for them. Every customer is our most important customer.

“What’s for dinner is a big decision every day. It’s important. Food is what brings us together.”

That’s not all they do to bring people together. Mike and June help raise money for local schools, selling $10 tickets for wings and spaghetti dinners, and they are strong supporters of the downtown.

“We support the other restaurants here,” June said.

“If you are alone, you are not going to make it. Some local business owners order from us, and we eat at their restaurants.

Raven Tattoo combines the latest technology and equipment with a comfortable, friendly space.

Martin and his team are adamant about eliminating the stigma that can come with tattoos and piercings.

“We’re trying to change the bad image of tattoos and tattoo shops. We aren’t a backdoor, down-an-alley kind of thing,” he said.

“It’s artwork. A lot more people are getting tattoos nowadays, and we’re trying to make that more acceptable.”

That respectable vibe is evident immediately: Raven Tattoo recently received a microgrant from the Dixon Chamber of Commerce and Main Street that it used to improve the building facade.

“Now it’s up-to-date and looks a lot nicer,” Martin said.

He’s also grateful that the community has been so supportive, as have his neighbors.

“All of the business around us have been super great and welcoming,” he said.

Although Martin, who grew up in Rochelle, always had a knack for drawing,

in high school in Fernley, Nevada, where his family moved right before his senior year, motocross was his passion.

“It’s how I was brought up. I always thought I was going to be a professional racer, but it didn’t quite work out,” he said.

Once he brought his love for drawing to the race track, Martin met a man who would change his life.

“One of my motocross sponsors was a tattoo shop. One of the guys saw my drawings, and he said ‘Why not give tattooing a shot?’ They put me on the path where I am now.”

Soon after, Martin began skipping classes at his community college in Reno because he would rather spend his time in the tattoo shop. “That’s when it hit me that that’s what I’m going to do.”

After a year’s apprenticeship at Sadistic Tattoo in Reno, Martin became manager of one of the owner’s five shops.

When he fell ill a couple of years ago with a case of homesickness, Martin moved back to Illinois. “I started missing a lot of family stuff that I took for granted,” he said.

He moved in with his grandmother to care for her home, also while helping a local tattoo shop get started. After a couple of years there, Martin had the experience, skill, and drive to open his own business. n

The newly renovated shop at 106 River St., once home to a local photographer, has been transformed into a serene and tranquil space, with the salon on the first floor and the spa upstairs in a former apartment.

Owner Vanessa Rubright opened her salon after being inspired by other local estheticians, and her team consists of stylists Lissa Jones, Kaila Langley, Sarah Reyes and Heather Solomon, who do combinations of hair, facial waxing, lash lifts, makeup and extensions; massage therapist Hillary Liebing; Karli Schmitt, a part-time esthetician; and Sarah Welty, who handles Meraki’s very active social media sites – it’s on Facebook and Instagram – and takes care of other office duties.

“They are such an amazing group of girls,” Rubright said.

The spa offers facials, power peels, waxing, sugaring and more.

Rubright, in fact, is a huge fan of facials – it’s the gift she prefers, she tells her family members. Those who get them regularly do so every 8 to 12 weeks, but a facial also is a great way to treat yourself any time, she said.

The Meraki team also is putting together relaxation packages for

those who want to spend the day.

“I want to see wedding packages soon, too,” Rubright said.

“Maybe a bridal party and come get her hair and makeup done, get dressed here, and go get married on the riverfront.”

Rubright and her family have lived in Dixon for 17 years, where she worked as an elementary school nurse for 13 years, and then 3 years at Dixon High.

“I absolutely loved it. It was a huge blessing. The kids were a blast, and I really miss them.”

Rubright also has coached a little volleyball and track. “I did what I could to help out the district,” she said.

Meraki’s story began in 2017, when Rubright’s daughters, Madisyn and Alivia, were 14 and 12. She was accustomed to spending her summers off with her girls, but that was their first summer away at camp, and that changed everything.

Suddenly confronted with some free time, “I thought, well, the first thing I’m gonna do is go get a facial.”

After spending some relaxing time at the salon, Rubright thought, “What a perfect job.

You could help people relax and feel good. That woman has the best job in the world.”

She went home and told her husband, Jason, an electrician, that she might want to be an esthetician.

During the 2017-18 school year, Rubright worked at the school during the day, attended esthetician classes in Sycamore a few days a week, and volunteered at the salon that inspired her the summer before.

“It was a whirlwind year,” Rubright said.

She tried but failed to buy a business, then she and Jason stumbled upon the perfect building for Meraki Spa Salon, right along the riverfront.

“I thought, this place is beautiful. I could see exactly

how I would make it into a salon and spa.”

Jason, always supportive of her mission, said, “Let’s see if we can make it happen.”

They put in an offer, and bought the building the same day. They signed the papers on Sept. 10, and began remodeling right away.

As their work began, Studio 404 in Dixon was closing its doors, and three of its stylists joined the team, along with a few others from around the area.

The Meraki salon opened in January and the spa in February.
