W

hen a hobby also helps provide critical communication in an emergency, that is the best of both worlds.

Such is the case for the members of the Lee County Amateur Radio Club, who have been keeping a specialized form of communication alive in the area.

“We formed the club in 2011 to work with Lee County Emergency Management,” said Wayne Lachat, one of its founders. “In order to work with them, regulations stated you had to have a working club.”

So Lachat and his dad, Frank, went through the process of organizing other amateur radio operators in the area and officially established the Lee County club. Wayne is president, and Frank vice president.

Frank credits his dad for sparking his interest in the hobby.

“My dad is my mentor and got me into it.

It’s definitely a family interest,” Wayne said.

“The whole family has a license.”

The Amateur Radio Club has about 15 members, ages 40 and up, who meet the second

Thursday every other month at KSB Hospital to discuss upcoming events and to share their interest in the communication form. Members also participate in training on Mondays to keep updated on their licenses and the latest in equipment.

Like most hobbies, the equipment can get pretty expensive. What a person spend depends on the depth of their passion, and pockets.

“You usually piece your station together, and it can get expensive, but on the used market you can get some things,” Wayne said. “Most people start out with a handheld receiver.”

When he first started putting his station together, Wayne saw amateur radio as a way to keep in touch with family who lived far away.

“I got involved in it when I was in Oklahoma and it was a way to talk with the people back home and keep up,” he said.

As all amateur radio operators must do, Wayne started in a novice class and now has progressed up to examiner.

He hosts a technician class every 2 to 3 years and also a 2- to 3-day weekend class.

The club also gathers on a weekend in June to conduct a field day in which amateur radio operators from throughout the area get a chance to fire up their equipment and socialize.

Radio club does some transmission work on the side In December, Challand Middle School students needed some help with a weather balloon project they were working on – federal regulations required the high-flying science project to have a license before it could take off. Enter the Lee County Amateur Radio Club. It helped students get the license so the balloon could transmit radio signals that would allow students to track and recover it. The partnership was a good way to help raise not only the balloon, but awareness of the club to a younger audience. “We go out and set up in some fields with emergency backup and generators. We contact people all over the U.S.,” Wayne said. “It’s 24 hours nonstop, and usually our club merges with the Sterling club and it’s usually at Sauk Valley Community College.”

While it may have to take a backseat to email, Twitter and other forms of social media communication these days, amateur radio actually was the trendsetter in this area when it started decades ago.

“In the early ‘90s, before the internet, we used amateur radio to run personal bulletin boards and leave messages for other operators,” Wayne said.

Lachat said when those agencies get the call to mobilize and respond to a disaster in the area, they will call the Amateur Radio Club to provide communication for them as they go assess the situation in the field and have club members report information back to the base camp with their radios.

Y

ou can’t judge a book by its cover, and you can’t always judge a building by its exterior.

On the outside, the Dixon Library is typical of a building that’s been around more than 100 years – a stately structure with a turn-of-the-century look about it – but on the inside, technology puts a world of information at patrons’ fingertips.

Computers, electronic databases, wireless internet, e-books … they’re all part of the library’s efforts to a growing number of libraries are taking to meet the demands of an increasingly tech-savvy generation who grew up swiping a screen instead of turning a page.

The library will celebrate is 125th anniversary in May 2020, and the building its 120th. During those years, the library has changed with the times, expanding its footprint and adding new services.

In recent years, it also has been getting much-needed, and welcomed, renovations and repairs.

The building was reinforced, the roof, boilers and air conditioners replaced, plumbing and lighting upgraded, a new ceiling was installed in the 1969 addition, and the 107 windows were replaced, all thanks to $1.2 million in Rita Crundwell recovery money from the city and $300,000 from the library’s trust fund.

Library Director Antony Deter, 47, oversaw much of the work, but he’s quick to point out that the pieces already were in place when he started in June 2015.

Dismantling a 50-yearold drop ceiling, in order to meet fire code standards, revealed plaster falling off the walls.

The library turned that into an opportunity to improve the building’s aesthetics and open up the space.

“I can take no credit for all the work that has been done. Those who have come before me paved the way for us.”

Although he takes no credit for the project, he’s like a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on it.

“I’ve written an historical review of the last 18 months. The entire electrical has been replaced, we’ve painted upstairs, modernized the elevator, replaced two sump pumps, and new carpet. The $1.3 million roof project was the key; you cannot repair the look of the

place if the roof leaks.”

During the ongoing renovations, patrons still need the library’s services – and there’s plenty of them.

“We offer internet for people who don’t have it,” Deter said, “Patrons come in to stay warm or cool, we provide a safe place for people to meet. People come in to read the newspaper and magazines, there is tutoring for children and adults.”

On average, 2,400 visitors a month spend 7,000 hours on its internet.

Because of that, any of its card-carrying patrons can use any library in the state.

As of this year, the Dixon library also is a federal depository, providing free access to any and all federal government publications and other information. It’s one of 52 facilities in Illinois that are part of the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Depository Library Program.

Among its other services are 16 computers for public use, wireless Internet, NewsBank local newspaper archives, e- and audiobook downloading, faxing and photocopying, test proctoring, and activities and events for children and adults alike.

Dixon Public Library, 221 S. Hennepin Ave., is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Dixon Public Library’s roots reach back to 1872, when the firemen of Dixon Hose Co. began a small subscription library. It became a city library in 1895-96.

In 1899, O.B. Dodge, the first president of the library board, offered to build a new building; it opened in early 1901.

The facility was remodeled in 1955 when the library custodian’s apartment was converted to the children’s department. A new addition opened in 1969, an elevator was added in 1986, the building was refurbished in 1994 at a cost of $100,000, and an extensive, $1.5 million repair and remodeling project began in 2015.

A media center was added in 1988, and now the library houses more than 70,000 books, more than 1,000 DVD’s and nearly 1,000 compact discs and audiobooks.

There are special local history, Reagan, and Lincoln collections and a display of original World War I posters.

In 2011, the library joined with other area libraries to form the Rock River Libraries Consortium, which includes the Sterling and Rock Falls public libraries and many area schools; it has a shared catalog of more than 250,000 items.

“We may be circulating fewer materials than we used to, but the fiscal year, May 1 to April 30, there were 108,000 items in circulation, and almost 12,000 computer usages,” he said. “Our community survey gave great ideas of what sort of materials the public wants.”

In addition, there’s a new program coming to Dixon that truly expands the definition of a lending library.

“We’ve joined a movement called ‘The Library of Things’,” Deter said.

“We plan to make things available in addition to books.

“We should be a sharing economy; not everyone needs to own everything.

Things can be shared, like sewing machines, 3-D printer, stencil cutter, wi-fi services, DVD players, small hand tools, microscopes, telescopes, fishing rods, etc. We plan to roll it out for kids for this summer, then bring it to adults.”

Concepts like that are just one example of how things are changing at the library, and how the final page is far from being written on an institution with 125 chapters and counting in its history book. n

MORE ABOUT ANTONY DETER Antony Deter brings international experience to his role at the library.

He came to Illinois to the University of Illinois in 1990 for a years’ study abroad from Aberystwyth University in Britain. “A friend invited me to visit him over spring break, and I met his cousin, Denise. We were married in 1994 and lived in Urbana and both worked in the University bookstore.”

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Library Science in Britain, and a master’s in education from the American Library Association.

Antony and Denise lived in Britain from 1998 to 2005, where Antony worked for a publisher and trained to become a history and computer teacher. “When we moved back in 2005, we wanted to be closer to Denise’s parents in Ashton.

Downtown Dixon reminded me a little of home, and we enjoyed the local attractions.”

Once settled in Dixon, Antony worked in DeKalb at Barnes and Noble, while his British teaching credentials transferred.

“In 2006 I started teaching history in Morrison at the junior high, and after 6 years, I became the district librarian. I also taught history and geography in the high school, and that rekindled my interest in library work. The Dixon job was posted, and I applied.”

Antony and Denise have two children, a daughter, 14, and a son, 11.

T

herapist Stacy Jo Barber believes mental health is just as important as physical health.

As the owner and operator of Roots and Wings in Dixon, Barber, 35, offers more than a listening ear, she also blends traditional talk therapy with art therapy.

“Everyone encounters phases in life where we experience deep, personal struggles. Reaching out to someone is a huge success and going to a counselor is a brave step in the right direction,” Barber said.

Art therapy is an effective supplement to traditional behavior health and social services.

“My clients range in age from 5 to 100, and art complements counseling, primarily for children and teens. My adults start out with talk therapy or counseling, until they feel stuck or we are not sure where to go next. The art studio for adults offers an additional way to communicate and reflect on emotions, life experiences, and inner thoughts.

“My clients create art that is meaningful to work through issues and gain a deeper understanding of experiences.”

“Art therapy is not about following rules or being aesthetically pleasing. If you are angry, you can scribble red and get it out; it’s not about the finished product. Healing is about the expression, and the meaning behind it.

Art opens the door to more talk, and more healing.�

Building trust is important. “I give clients my full attention, I’m a good listener, and I come from a place of nonjudgment. People think they will be judged for what they’ve thought, but I provide insight for them to realize their own truth. “For the most part, people know what they need, and they know what they need to do. I am the person holding the lantern to shine the light on their next steps.�

Her office is comfortable, with a main reading room, talk room, and separate art studio. “We have a big closet where people can choose painting, drawing, sculpture clay, collage, jewelry, canvas, yarn, ribbon, nontraditional recycled items, gems and beads. “We use cartoon books – the older students can rip out a page or images that they

like and write in their own word bubbles.

This helps to work through what was said, or what wasn’t said, or what could be said in the future.� There are misconceptions about art therapy. You cannot look at a child’s picture and point out an abuse, for example. “I cannot assume or interpret. I ask them to tell me about their picture, and if they can explain something, it helps them to talk through their feelings.� Barber works to help clients recognize their own strengths, to set and achieve realistic goals, and to work on improving their overall health and well-being. “I want to build a trusting and safe relationship, where they can feel comfortable exploring issues, facing challenges, and

making change in their lives. My passion is utilizing art and creativity to weave together our experiences and stories.�

Barber, who grew up in the Mount Morris and Oregon area, graduated from Benedictine University in Lisle in 2006 with a bachelor’s in studio art; she earned her master’s in art therapy from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2008. “I worked as a counselor and art therapist at the Youth Campus in Park Ridge, the Counseling Center of Lakeview, and New Horizon Center School for children with severe developmental disabilities and autism in Chicago.�

She was, and still is, an adjunct professor at Benedictine, teaching art therapy and drawing, from 2013 to 2017 before moving to Dixon.

She has exhibited her own artwork at Benedictine and has won an Alumni Achievement Award. She also has exhibited her work locally at the Crystal Cork – “photo-realistic oil painting, graphite pencil portraits ... some pieces are processoriented, more exploratory and abstract forms of art.�

She and her husband, Scooter, have three children. n

I

t may be a brand-new restaurant, but Curate Kitchen comes with a lot of history, both local and international.

Jessi Marshall, 37, born and raised in Dixon, comes from an entrepreneurial family.

“Our family-owned a beauty and barber supply store we sold in 2010, and I moved to Arizona to stay in the beauty industry,” Marshall said.

“I worked for the Professional Beauty Association as director of education and special programming.

After traveling 15 to 20 days a month nationally and internationally, I wanted out of the race.”

In her 8 years with the association, Marshall visited 15 countries and tasted a wide variety of food.

When she returned to Dixon, she tried a couple of different business ideas, but they didn’t work out. She had changed her lifestyle and her way of eating, so she started researching local food offerings, and found a niche that wasn’t being served in the area.

“We cater to specialties,” Marshall said. “Eighty percent of our menu can be gluten-free, 60 percent can be vegetarian, we can make it nut-free.

“Kids grow up eating differently than I did. Now kids eat sushi, curry, and experience international spices – everyone’s palate has changed. Internationally, people eat less processed food.

“I contacted a couple of national home delivery companies, and they were willing to tell me how many people they were delivering to in the Sauk Valley area. I was blown away.”

Her menu reflects her own personal history.

“I called one of my favorite restaurants in Brussels – Café’ La Pompe – and asked for their recipes, and they gave them to me!

“We feature a BLT with Caesar salad and bacon, a four-cheese ‘grown-up’ grilled cheese, and daily roasted tomato and basil,” she said.

Curate Kitchen emphasizes the experience of eating.

“Our focus is not only healthy eating, but ‘mindful eating’: We want the food to be pure, whole, unprocessed. We love the champagne vinaigrette, from Napa grapes, or Brussels sprouts salad, and this summer we’ll use local produce as much as we can.”

The extra lounge area seats 12 to 30, with a sofa, bean bags and coffee trays, can be rented for parties or other gatherings.

Curate Kitchen is located at 120 W. River St. in Dixon, in the building that formerly housed a dry cleaner. Marshall quadrupled the number of windows, which immediately made the building feel more spacey, and more homey at the same time.

“We provide a 45-inch monitor and sound system for presentations or videos, and fully-closing barn doors for privacy,” she said.

Being close to the downtown is a major plus for Curate Kitchen.

“We want to support the downtown restaurant community. Our idea is for you to come in and order an appetizer with your beer/wine, then walk downtown to a local restaurant for dinner,” Marshall said.

“We are excited to be back and part of this community. Dixon has been good for me. I got a great education, made great friends, and now we are beneficial to the Rock River valley.

A

t Deals and Steels, collecting, recycling and upcycling is a family affair.

The antiques and collectibles shop, which opened Oct. 1, is run by owner Kim Thrasher and her daughters, shop coordinator Ashley Musgrave, 30, bookkeeper Brittany Lunn, 29, and Kayla Musgrave, 23, buyer and furniture designer.

“We try to be unique in the way that we blend old and new,” Thrasher said Don’t let all that estrogen fool you: “We aren’t just an antique shop for women, but we are also a shop for the guys – with the specialty tools and collectible toys.”

The ladies browse antique shows, auctions, and other shops, keeping an eye out for what’s selling.

They have shelves full of dishes, glassware, gifts and household goods – old and new.

The girls’ dad, Jeff Musgrave, contributed his collections of toys, tools, working machines, Schwinn bicycles and rare items found during years of buying and selling – and he’ll make you a good deal.

“It’s really the work of my daughters and their mom.

I just want to support them because they like to do it.”

Thrasher comes from a family of entrepreneurs. She grew up working around her mom’s antique and upholstery shop, and had a shop of her own in Indiana where she sold silk flowers, wedding arrangements, and crafts.

When Brittany isn’t crunching numbers, she’s adding her own touches to some of the items.

“I like to take a furniture piece that is still in good shape and sand it down a little and paint it. That doesn’t require a lot of preparation, and it turns out so nice.”

The inventory is always changing.

“We keep looking for more merchandise; we want to replenish what sells well,” Thrasher said. “We have a repeat customer base because we change out new products and displays regularly.”

The women also welcome new vendors to their shop, and would love to see what partnerships might develop. n

T

he Dixon Park District has developed a new leadership team with new goals and projects on the horizon aimed at giving community members more options and opportunities.

The slew of staff changes started when longtime maintenance director Duane Long became the district’s executive director in June, replacing Deb Carey, who retired after 3 decades with the district.

Shortly after stepping into the position, the district and city renewed talks of partnering to bring a bigger splash pad to Dixon, and an anonymous donor committed $200,000 to that cause.

That turned into the beginnings of Water Wonderland, a splash pad with 23 features to be installed at Meadows Park near Wooden Wonderland. The project also will have a pavilion, restrooms and a paved parking lot.

“Projects like this new splash pad becoming a reality is such a great accomplishment for this great community,” Long said.

The project is expected to cost slightly more than $500,000 and be completed by the end of June, barring any delays. The city and district are pitching in $100,000 each; it is hoped donations will pay the rest of the bill.

The district also installed a nine-hole disc golf course in Lowell Park last year and is adding a 38-space parking lot in Page Park near the baseball diamonds to alleviate years of parking issues.

The new year started off with announcing new projects as well.

Come fall, Lowell Park will be getting a new playground that will include a 75-foot zip line.

The district received a grant from the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association and GameTime, an outdoor playground and fitness equipment company, that will cover about half of the $110,000 cost of the project, with the district’s end expected to be around $58,000.

It will be built in a 100-by-70-foot area in the lower part of the park near the river, and will feature a play center with slides, a swing set, a merry-go-round and the zip line.

The district will also be adding a removable 60-by-100-foot ice rink at the Page Park basketball courts.

ASSEMBLING THE TEAM The district hired Dixon native Seth Nicklaus in February from a pool of

around 75 applicants to replace former recreation director Terry Shroyer, who accepted an early retirement package in December.

“Seth couldn’t be more passionate about working with the youth of our community and helping our team move the park district forward,” Long said.

“In addition to his incredible resume in sports and recreation, he brings leadership and business experience to this position.”

Nicklaus, a former gym teacher, math teacher, health teacher, athletic director and basketball coach at Faith Christian School in Grand Detour, said he’s looking forward to thinking outside of the box and getting input from community members on what changes or additions they would like to see.

“I’m excited to be here, and I’m thankful for the opportunity.”

He’s also a 2005 Dixon High School graduate and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

He and his wife, Amy, own Rustic Roots in Dixon and have two children, Brody and Emma.
