A legacy transplanted Dixon Floral Co. has found a new home, and its new owner is excited about keeping the 100-plus-year business growing

DIXON – For Melissa Gallentine, running a flower business isn’t a far cry from running a pizzeria.

Both businesses specialize in custom orders – whether it’s picking buds for a bouquet or toppings on a pizza – and both peddle a product that can be picked up or delivered.

And where would the former be without flour, or the latter without flowers?

But whether it’s pizza or petals, one thing is exactly the same: Quality is what keeps people coming back.

So when the owners of the century-plus-old flower shop asked Gallentine about taking over Dixon Floral Co., it didn’t take her long to make up her mind.

“Shelly Long, the previous owner, asked me one day in August if I would like to run the business,” Gallentine said. “I saw the opportunity ahead of me Dixon Floral Co.’s new owner, Melissa Gallentine (left), and designer and said yes.”

Garden of Wellness Talk about a church revival: A local couple breathed new life into an old church and turned it into a place where customers can relax, recharge and rejuvenate ROCK FALLS – Bedded deep within a murky pond, a lotus seed extends its stem above the water, yearning for sunlight, and blossoming into a beautiful flower.

It’s an ancient symbol of rebirth, purity and enlightenment, and the inspiration Jerrie Garcia used for her new business, Lotus Wellness Spa and Salon, which offers massages, waxing and facials.

About 2 years ago, Garcia, and her husband, Mark Garcia, 49, purchased the old church at 501 W. Second St. in Rock Falls and started an extensive restoration project.

The time and effort spent repurposing the building was worth the wait, she said.

“We had looked for about 5 to 7 years before finally deciding on this place,” Garcia said.

Incorporating pieces original to the building was important to Garcia, like tearing up the carpet to find maple and Douglas-fir wood flooring.

“I’m a nostalgic person, so we refinished the flooring and kept a few of the church pews for the hair-drying bench.”

Garcia has more than a decade of experience as a massage therapist, and that passion stems back to when she was in high school and met a massage therapist during a career day demonstration in Tampico.

“I volunteered and thought this was something I wanted to do,” Garcia said.

However, it wasn’t until 2007 when Garcia decided to quit her job at Wahl Clipper to follow her dream.

“I remembered how I felt whenever I got a massage so I wanted to reciprocate that feeling by helping others the best way that I could – becoming a massage therapist,” she said.

She attended Capri College in Davenport, Iowa, to become certified and after graduating in 2008, the Rock Falls resident landed her first job at Statik Hair Studio and Day Spa in Sterling where she worked for 2 years.

She then worked at Extreme Hair and Day Spa in Sterling where she worked from 2011 until opening Lotus.

“I definitely learned a lot at the two different salons, mostly that every one of my

clients were different in what they need,” Garcia said. “I also got to see what I enjoyed and what I didn’t enjoy while working there and implemented that in my vision for my own business.”

In addition to massage, Lotus Wellness Spa and Salon features a range of services from a simple haircut, waxing and manicures, to ear candling, an old remedy that helps remove ear wax, relieve a sore throat, swimmers ear, allergies and other sinus problems.

Garcia said she also plans to add yoga classes and pedicures in the near future.

She also anticipates adding another massage therapist, wellness practitioner and salon stylists that have the same goal in mind.

“We’re all on the same team here, to help people feel good and find their inner beauty.” n

DIXON – If there’s one thing the trio of stylists at Hydrate Salon and Spa agree on, it’s that they prefer to have a comb and clipper in hand rather than a keyboard under their fingertips.

After years climbing the corporate ladder, owner Janice Swegle, 29, grew tired of living in Chicago, working 80 hours a week and missing her family back in Dixon.

So she took a leap of faith, quit her job at the Willis Tower and came home to pursue her dream of opening a spa. “I remember coming home from a business trip and calling my mom because I was exhausted from the built-up stress,� Swegle said. “I had no free time and I started to question what I was doing with my life.�

For 6 months, she saved every last penny she could, then quit her job and moved back home.

That was just over 2 years ago. Since then, she went back to school to learn the ins-and-outs of beauty, and opened Hydrate in July.

“I almost missed my life’s calling. It was a scary jump, but I haven’t looked back since,” Swegle said.

The salon’s clean lines and minimalist look – black accents, wood details, and plants, pulled together by crisp, white walls – are Swegle’s aesthetic, but her parents, Mark and Terri Swegle, 57 and 56, have helped with everything from the lawn care to installing the sign outside the front door.

“Probably the biggest influence was my older sister, Jill (Swegle) Hayes. She wanted to open a spa and salon too, but life took her in another direction.

“We tossed around names for weeks, and one day we were talking about the vision for the salon and said we wanted people to come here and feel rehydrated, and that was it,” Swegle said.

With her desired look and vibe achieved, Swegle’s next step was to find stylists. She chose Bethany Wright, 29, and Kaila Langley 27, for their expertise, and for their shared stories.

Wright is a certified Redken hair colorist who prides herself on continuing her education and understanding the science behind coloring and cutting techniques.

The Dixon native didn’t start out as a stylist, though: Seven years ago, Wright was an EMT dispatcher in Naperville, but also wasn’t happy about the path she was on.

“I was stuck in life so, I called my pastor. We prayed to see what the next step in life was for me, and God told me to school to study hair,” Wright said.

“I’m much happier now, I have a better work-life balance and can spend time with my husband, Nathan Wright, and daughter, Gianna [who’s 3].”

It’s the opportunity to have a positive influence on people day-in and day-out that she likes best.

“This is a safe environment to love on people and open up. We’re here to listen and help you look and feel better. Faith is a huge part of my life, and I love the

opportunity to help build someone up every day,” Wright said.

When it comes to hair, her preference is to create an effortlessly lived-in style.

“Hair designing is my creative strength, and I’ll do what’s best for each person’s hair lifestyle,” Wright said.

It’s nearly the same story for Langley, who always dreamed of being a hair stylist – “I grew up in the salon where my mom worked in Colorado, but I just went to college and worked at a Wells Fargo.”

Then she and her husband, Travis Langley, 32, moved back to his home-

town. “I had the choice to go back to a bank job or do what I was passionate about,” she said.

The gamble paid off, and Langley found her equilibrium at Hydrate, enjoying time with her husband and Paisley, their 4-year-old daughter.

She loves positive impact she can have on people, “I have the power to make someone’s day, and make them feel and look beautiful.

“I really pride myself on being able to look at a picture on Pinterest and achieving that look.” n

“Some may think it might be a little too classy for Rock Falls, but I feel like Rock Falls deserves a classy bar,” Nusbaum said of the new watering hole, which offers clean lines and a loungey vibe.

Hammer Headz opened Aug. 12 at 315 First Ave. It features domestic and imported beer, wines, liquors, and signature drinks like the Dirty Hammer – akin to a dirty martini – as well as five video gambling slot machines and a bowling game.

Nusbaum said the business raises the bar in class and stature, and it also raises a glass to her husband Eddie’s late father, Gail Nusbaum, who often asked “What are you hammer heads up to?”

When Cindy Nusbaum was designing Hammer Headz, she wanted to bring something upscale downtown, a bar with a laid-back lounge vibe. “I feel like Rock Falls deserves a classy bar,” she said. This area with the TV and fireplace is a popular spot to gather and chit chat.

“Eddie’s father used to greet him and his brother Arnie with that phrase. He was such a well-known and liked guy around town, so it just felt right to name it after him,” she said.

Gail died Jan. 13.

She used to run Cynergy Styling Salon in the same location, but being a full-time stylist and managing a bar is a lot to handle, so she hung up the clippers and combs to see to the opening of Hammer Headz.

In March 2017, the salon reopened in the downstairs of her husband’s first bar, Fast Eddie’z at 611 First Ave. “Eddie gave me full reign from the beginning. I designed the bar from concept to reality, and it’s hard to imagine that this used to be a salon,” she said.

They did extensive renovation work, including a new restroom, flooring, decorations, a separate video gambling area and a small lounge to set the dark and clean tone, illuminated by blue and orange neon lights from the liquor shelf and the electronic fireplaces.

The bar also offers a spot where your phones can get a drink of juice, courtesy of a charging station.

Resort revamp

White Pines Resort’s roots date back almost 90 years, and the lodge isn’t done growing yet, thanks to some recent upgrades and renovations MOUNT MORRIS – Sometimes, a little extra space is just what’s needed.

Staff at White Pines Resort are seeing the benefits of adding some elbow room last winter, with more space in the theater and banquet room.

Lodge concessionaire Beth Henderson said work at the resort, 6712 W. Pines Road, started in October 2017 and was done by Dec. 18. The resort reopened in March and the grand opening was May 14.

The added banquet room space allows the resort to have up to 150 people for weddings and other events.

A new stage was added with state-ofthe art lighting and sound, to help with the mid-week dinner theater. Henderson said the theater marks its 30th anniversary this year.

“They’re mostly mid-week matinees, geared toward the retiree market, and nights and weekends. We do comedies, musicals, lots of tribute artists, and ‘Scrooge the Comedy’ every year. It’s allages appropriate,” she said.

White Pines also added a corporate retreat center during the expansion, with projectors, screens, and sound systems.

Henderson said Woods Equipment Co. in Oregon and KSB Hospital have started using the center.

The resort’s expansion was unique in a number of ways. Henderson said it was the first expansion in more than 30 years in White Pines State Park.

“It was the only construction being done in a state park all of last year. It was

The resort also partners with the hospitality management program at Highland Community College in Freeport. Evan Talbert, full-time instructor with the program, said Highland offers both semester

“Having White Pines gives us a lot of the facility needs. Having the restaurant, banquet area, when we have our class or lecture, it’s much easier for us to demonstrate, whether there’s customers or not. White Pines also could be a great host for our internship program,” Talbert said.

The hospitality program may offer classes at White Pines in the future.

The resort’s historical roots remain.

The lodge was built during the 1930s by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps’ Depression-era public work relief program.

The lodge restaurant features a Sunday buffet from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 2 to 8 p.m.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available the rest of the week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant will remain open until Dec. 23.

The state park is open from dawn to dusk, and admission is free. The park is partially accessible to wheelchairs.
