DIXON – Zach Martin is on a mission, dedicated to improving the image of the art form by offering unique designs coupled with outstanding service at his shop, Raven Tattoo.

Raven, open for more than a year at 109 S. Hennepin Ave., offers highquality tattooing and microblading.

Martin, 30, of Dixon, and Mat Steder, 34, of Rochelle, are the tattoo artists.

“We focus on custom tattoos,” Martin said. That means “no flash work,” a simple, common form of tattooing, often where customers pick the design out of a book, that sacrifices quality and often lacks detail.

“Everything you get from our shop is custom and 100% yours,” Martin said.

“We do the tattoo just for you, and we won’t do the same one for anybody else that walks in.”

Which makes each tattoo that much more meaningful.

Raven Tattoo combines the latest technology and equipment with a comfortable, friendly space.

Martin and his team are adamant about eliminating the stigma that can come with tattoos and piercings.

“We’re trying to change the bad image of tattoos and tattoo shops. We aren’t a backdoor, down-an-alley kind of thing,” he said.

“It’s artwork. A lot more people are getting tattoos nowadays, and we’re trying to make that more acceptable.”

That respectable vibe is evident immediately: Raven Tattoo recently received a microgrant from the Dixon Chamber of Commerce and Main Street that it used to improve the building facade.

“Now it’s up-to-date and looks a lot nicer,” Martin said.

He’s also grateful that the community has been so supportive, as have his neighbors. “All of the business around us have been super great and welcoming,” he said.

Although Martin, who grew up in Rochelle, always had a knack for drawing in high school in Fernley, Nevada, where his family moved right before his senior year, motocross was his passion.

“It’s how I was brought up. I always thought I was going to be a professional racer, but it didn’t quite work out,” he said.

Once he brought his love for drawing to the race track, Martin met a man who would change his life.

“One of my motocross sponsors was a tattoo shop.

One of the guys saw my drawings, and he said ‘Why not give tattooing a shot?’ They put me on the path where I am now.”

Soon after, Martin began skipping classes at his community college in Reno because he would rather spend his time in the tattoo shop. “That’s when it hit me that that’s what I’m going to do.”

After a year’s apprenticeship at Sadistic Tattoo in Reno, Martin became manager of one of the owner’s five shops.

A

Morrison woman is bringing new meaning to being a hands-on business owner.

Andrea Ramirez recently opened Embraced at 104 W. Main St., a business she describes as a “wellness hub” that addresses a need in her hometown “for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.”

Whatever someone is struggling with, Ramirez wants to help – and she wants the healing process to

come naturally.

The shop offers herbal and holistic products, self-improvement services, and classes aimed at tapping into people’s inner energy. Want to hear more about sound therapy? Find out whether cannabidiol oils is right for you? Or maybe you’re looking for a way to experience some “natural Bohemian vibes” in a macrame class. Ramirez is ready to help. If it promotes a person’s well-being, then she’ll embrace it, and she hope customers do, too.

Shelves are stocked with essential oils, CBD (cannabidiol) oils, diffusers, crystals, and other energy-boosting products, and if you’re not sure how to use them, help is close at hand.

Customers can take classes on stress, anxiety, meditation, oil discipline, and more – all of which provide opportunities to connect with others and learn from Ramirez, a certified reiki master, who offers reiki sessions and one-on-one consultations.

Reiki is a Japanese alternative healing technique based on the principle that a therapist can channel energy into their clients by means of touch – palm healing or laying of hands – to encourage a person’s natural healing processes and restore physical and emotional well-being. The word comes from two Japanese words: rei, which means “god’s wisdom or the higher power” and ki, which is “life force energy.”

Embraced also has a drink stand with coffees, teas, smoothies, and other beverage. Ramirez said Morrison lacked a place for people to gather, have a healthy drink, and connect with one another, so she added it to her shop.

“We’re doing so much under one roof,” Ramirez said, but if you still can’t find what you need for that personal pick-meup, then she’ll find someone who can. “If we can’t help you with it, we have the resources to put you in contact with someone who can.”

3CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 Kerri Baker, a close friend of Ramirez’s for more than 8 years, works at the shop and said she enjoys helping customers “embrace a better you.”

The pair said they love helping customers one-on-one to come up with a custom-made plan to problem-solve just about anything.

Ramirez said she prioritizes “sourcing and knowing where our products come from. We use only good quality things that help others somehow.”

Some of the products are about more than just profit. “There is so much that goes on behind the scenes,” Ramirez said. “For example, with our men’s line, a portion of the proceeds goes to mental illness organizations.”

Her role as a business owner is just the latest step in a journey that began awhile ago for Ramirez, 39, who’s been tapping into positive vibes for years. She used to travel to hospitals, parties, and other businesses with a table display where she helped people get the energy boost they seek. “It was my way of doing what I was being called to do while still being a mom,” she said.

Then, in November 2018, she struck oil.

Ramirez started adding oils to her stock, and she quickly found herself doing more business than ever.

“They made it grow so much quicker that we needed a physical shop.”

Soon after, Ramirez and her husband, Christopher, bought the former Quinn’s Jewelry building to begin Embraced, opening their doors in June, where they soon found out that being in the former home of a downtown fixture for decades – Quinn’s was in business for 40 years before closing last year – comes with some built-in walk-in traffic.

People still drop by with an occasional request to polish a wedding ring, unaware the Quinn’s closed. Though Ramirez can’t help with jewelry, she still hopes people will give her a ring, or stop by to see what her business has to offer.

She said the shop has become something of a “family venture” since opening, with the couple’s eight children backing Mom’s mission to improve the well-being of their community. The kids “are my little salesmen,” Ramirez said.

“They can tell you all about each product.”

Whether you come in for quick drink or want help coming up with a long-term plan to help yourself, Ramirez said she wants everyone who leaves her shop “feeling a little bit lighter.”

Jeff and Thelma Spangler are the husband-and-wife duo behind the quirky business that’s been around for more than a decade.

Thelma cuts, colors, and highlights hair for customers of all ages while Jeff stocks the store with merchandise for the same sorts of customers: folks of all ages.

“A lot of families come in and they all sit down and get haircuts,” Jeff, 66, said.

While they wait, Jeff’s Juke Joint has tons of products to browse through, from the wigs and beauty products that the shop first started with to music, toys, books African clothing, decor and more – a lot more. How much more?

“A little bit of everything,” Jeff said.

The business’ name was inspired by the juke joint in the movie “The Color Purple” – and while you won’t find any dancing or drinking going on, you can pick up some coffee mugs and CDs. “For a long time, we would play music all the time in the shop,” Jeff said.

Jeff orders from wholesale companies all over. He enjoys “getting a new catalog every few months and seeing what new things people have to offer.”

“That’s probably the most fun part of this,” he said.

The business is a one-man – and onewoman – operation. Jeff and Thelma are the shops’ owners, and their only employees.

Thelma opened Thelma’s Unisex Salon about 15 years ago in Sterling. As the couple began to break into the business of selling more and more beauty products, they eventually bought a space next door for storage. Soon enough, that storage space turned into a shop where they sold beauty products, wigs, hair pieces, and other odds and ends that appealed to Thelma’s customers.

Around 2007, the Spanglers bought their current space in Rock Falls. Jeff’s experience in remodeling and fixing up

Page 13 rental properties in the area came in handy as the new building required a lot of renovations.

The place had been empty for a while and “we had to put sprinkler heads in, put thicker drywall in the ceiling, and get things up to meet the current codes,” Jeff said. “It took us a couple years to get through the approval process.”

The couple operated their two businesses in both Sterling and Rock Falls for a while, but decided to put everything under one roof in Rock Falls – “it was kind of silly paying rent for two places,” Jeff said – and that’s where they’ve been for the past 12 years.

Thelma grew up in Sterling, and Jeff grew up in Dixon. After some years of exploration, the couple decided the Twin Cities is where they wanted to land for good.

“I guess this is where my heart is at,” Jeff said. “I grew up here, my family and friends are here. Maybe I stayed for the Rock River. I love the Rock River.”

When Jeff isn’t at the shop, he works as a full-time engineer and spends time fixing up the couple’s rental properties.

The motto for Jeff’s shop is “Maybe I got one.” If you’re wondering, “one of what?” Jeff has as answer: “Well what are you looking for? Maybe I got one.”

hen John Deere decided to end its partnership with Wilco Rental in Sterling after more than 3 decades, finding something to replace the company’s products was simplicity itself; in fact, it was a snap.

But that doesn’t mean the longtime lawn and garden dealer and service shop was happy to get a Dear John letter from the company that had been its flagship brand.

3CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 Moline-based John Deere, a leader in ag machinery and lawn and garden equipment, recently reorganized its sales philosophies and shifted toward putting all of its products in separate locations. That means less green at Wilco, which Deere deemed too small to work with, Springman said.

It didn’t take long to make up for the losses; Wilco, at 1825 Locust St., has picked up Simplicity and Snapper to go along with their existing line of Ariens, Echo, Gravely, Stihl and Toro products. “We feel the product is just as good as Deere and the quality is there, perhaps in some regards even better,� Springman said. The future can be a little uncertain when dealing with a big loss, but Springman said the customers are adapting to the change. Some have either traded in their John Deeres for other products and have stayed committed to the business.

Wilco continues to carry John Deere parts and continues to service them. “We’re selling ourselves rather than just a product,� Springman said. “The customers that we’ve had for over 30 years know that the service will be there, the same guys will be here, whether it’s buying parts or getting something worked on.�
