Patent that mantra Wilcox throws 5 TD passes to 5 different Dukes in victory

DIXON – Entering his first varsity game as quarterback, Dixon junior Noah Wilcox planned to live by a simple mantra: “Get the ball to the athletes.”

After Friday’s 46-20 drubbing of the Mendota Trojans at A.C. Bowers Field in which Wilcox winged five touchdowns passes to five different receivers, he’ll be applying for a patent for that successful phrase.

“Coach and I talk all the time that all I really have to do is get the ball out to the athletes,” Wilcox said. “You saw it tonight. It doesn’t have to be much more than a swing pass or a screen, and they are able to take it a long way.”

The scoring barrage started from the get-go after Dane Sperling set up the Dukes with great field position by falling on a fumble by Mendota’s Paxton Kennedy on the opening kickoff.

Three plays later, Arthur Cox picked apart the defense with a nifty 16-yard touchdown run.

It wouldn’t be long before Cox found the end zone again, after Dixon’s defense forced a fumble

on the ensuing series and Clint Schielein recovered on the Mendota 39.

“Scoring after those turnovers was really important,” Cox said.

“We got all the momentum with those.”

Cox, who finished with 70 rushing yards, scored on a 35-yard TD run to put Dixon up 14-0. He scored the Dukes’ third touchdown to start the second quarter on a 23-yard pass from Wilcox.

“I came over to the sideline in the first quarter and said I really didn’t need to do much out there,” Wilcox said. “All we had to do is get the ball to Arthur, and he’d do the rest.”

Wilcox, who had 320 passing yards, also had touchdown passes to Kaylon Westmorland, Jared Harrison, Kandras Martin and Elijah McGlown.

Cards make statement Forreston runs offense to near perfection to beat AFC

FRANKLIN CENTER – The inherent deception of the double-wing offense can often make it tricky for spectators to identify which player is carrying the football at any given time.

During Friday’s season-opening contest at Ashton-Franklin Center, it was easy. Not because the visiting Cardinals of Forreston weren’t deceptive, but because the ball carrier was usually the player 6 or 7 yards past the line of scrimmage.

Forreston racked up 200 rushing yards in the first half alone, using distinct advantages over AFC in both size and speed to run its way to an impressive 41-0 victory.

“Our speed sweep and our sweep outside were really good today. That kind of shocked me. I thought we’d be better up the middle more,” said junior Gavin Fuchs, a speedy 6-foot-2 junior who rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. “We did a really good job executing everywhere.”

The Cardinals lost just five seniors from last year’s squad,

which advanced to the second round of the playoffs, and after Friday’s hyper-efficient performance, the Cardinals could be forgiven for having grandiose plans for this season. Head coach Denny Diduch, however, was not only impressed with his team’s play, but also its focus as they flip the calendar to next week’s game.

“I really think the guys were in a good spot after the game,” Diduch said. “They know there are things that can get better.

You can always find something.”

When the coaching staff goes back and looks at the tape of this one, they might have to squint to find much wrong.

The Cardinals got off to pretty much the best start possible, with junior Anthony Christensen returning the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. The defense then forced a fumble on just the second AFC offensive play, setting up a 6-yard touchdown run six plays later by yet another junior, Matt Akins. In all, five different Cardinals scored touchdowns in the game, all juniors.

Rockets strike true Rock Falls losing streak stopped at 25 games in Rockford

ROCKFORD — Finally, the 25-game streak of futility came to an end at Royal Lion Stadium in Rockford Friday night, as the Rock Falls Rockets defeated the Rockford Christian Royal Lions 20-13 in both teams’ Big Northern Conference opener.

The seal is broken, but there’s more work to accomplish for the Rockets (1-0, 1-0 BNC).

“It’s going to be nice to go back to school Monday and have some respect,” Rockets senior lineman Rollie Elder said. “I think we have to earn more respect.”

The last time Rock Falls won a game was in Week 2 of the 2013 season against Marengo in a BNC crossover game. The current seniors were playing undefeated ball on the freshman level back then.

Isaiah Harris ran for 126 yards on 24 carries. The senior had a 1-yard rushing TD in the second quarter, and broke the game open with a 16-yard TD reception from senior quarterback Logan Pillars with 1:31 left in the third quarter.

Harris’s second score put the Rockets up by the final seven-point margin, and he gave all of the credit to his offensive line – much of them returning from last year’s winless squad.

“My entire game was because of my line,” Harris said. “That’s all I can really say. Without them, I’d get blasted every single play. They’re the real MVPs of this game.”

Pillars put the Rockets up 6-0 with a 1-yard plunge with 2:56 to go in the first quarter, but Michael Berentes’ point-after kick sailed low. Rockford Christian (0-1, 0-1) and Dave Prisby took advantage of that in the following quarter. The Royal Lions’ senior scored on a 62-yard run, and they led 7-6 after a successful kick.

Harris’s TD run came with 4:29 left in the second quarter, but the Royal Lions’ pair of Noah Kellerman and Chase Rosche connected on a 20-yard pass with 14 seconds remaining until half.

The Rockets’ defense held the Royal Lions scoreless for the second half, and stopped their last-ditch effort on fourth down in enemy territory. Travis Delgado’s sack of Kellerman gave the Rockets the ball with about 90 seconds remaining.

“My team, they told me to get the ball,” Delgado said. “I just saw an opening, shot it, and tried to do the best I can to get this win – for the defense.”

Harris put together a 28-yard run on a right-side sweep with key blocks from Elder and Blake Wind to milk the clock to the 1-minute mark with a fresh set of downs.

Rockets coach Rich Montgomery thought there were chances to put the game away much earlier, but was glad to get that 1-0 start — something the Rockets haven’t accomplished since 2003.

STERLING – For a full quarter, Friday’s matchup between Sterling and Sycamore looked like it would live up to its billing as a tight game between two ranked teams. But that all ended once the Golden Warriors found the end zone.

Sterling scored six consecutive times to erase an early deficit, and powered its way to a 38-6 win over the Spartans in a NIB12 crossover game at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Sycamore (0-1) came into the season opener as Class 5A’s seventh-ranked team in the Associated Press polls; Sterling was sixth. The Warriors’ first drive stalled at the Sycamore 1-yard line after four consecutive runs came up empty.

“I wanted to see where we were at,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “[Place kicker] Tony [Diaz] made a big one later on, so maybe we’ll kick it next time.

We didn’t get in, but I wanted to see how the guys responded.”

The Spartans drove 99 yards on the next series to take a 6-0 lead, but the snap was botched

on the extra point try. The long drive was aided by a 15-yard personal foul penalty on the Sterling defense, which set up a 46-yard reception by Jordan Tolzin.

But then it was all Sterling. The Warriors scored five rushing touchdowns and added a field goal on their next six possessions. Latrell Vaughn punched it in from the 1 on the first play of the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead; he would later add a 6-yard score. Dixon transfer Nyrel Sullivan had rushing touchdowns of 2, 41 and 29 yards to go with 143 yards on the ground.

Diaz ended the first half by connecting on a 31-yard field goal.

PROPHETSTOWN – It’s a tough call to say whether Bureau Valley’s offense, defense or special teams shined the brightest during Friday’s season opener against Erie-Prophetstown.

The Storm was dominant in all phases of the game, and rolled to a 47-13, mercy-rule victory over the Panthers at Mosher Field in Prophetstown.

“We played pretty good team ball,” BV junior quarterback Drake Davis said. “They beat us the last few years pretty good, so it’s nice to give it back to them.”

The easiest place to start is the offense, which scored on four of six first-half possessions and went up and down the field at will.

Davis ended the game completing 11 of 20 passes for 208 yards.

His lone TD pass was a 24-yarder to Bryan Herr on the Storm’s first possession.

Herr caught six passes for 127 yards, while Jay Edlefsen hauled in four passes for 57 yards.

Davis also rushed 18 times for 106 yards, and Caje Peterson had 14 carries for 101 yards and three touchdowns. His 21-yard

score with 7 minutes, 5 seconds left in the third quarter made the score 40-0 and set a running clock in motion the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, the BV defense was equally dominant. It kept the Panthers off the scoreboard until the mercy rule clock was running.

Interceptions by Peterson and Herr thwarted first-half drives by E-P. “We’e pretty happy with the defense,” Peterson said. “We had a goal of keeping them under 100 yards, but I don’t think we got that. We held them to 13 points, and that’s way better than last year [a 45-22 defeat]. We’ve got a goal this year to make it to state, and I’m hoping to do it.”

Steamers rain on Hall Sloppy play leads to Red Devils’ downfall

SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Red Devils’ start to the 2016 season didn’t go as planned, as the Fulton Steamers opened the floodgates Friday and tacked on 41 unanswered points before the Red Devils hit paydirt to win convincingly by the score of 41-8 at rain-soaked Richard Nesti Stadium.

The Steamers capitalized on five Hall turnovers. They took four of those turnovers into the end zone to score 28 points.

“We had five turnovers. Three picks and two fumbles,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said. “We can’t turn the ball over and expect to win games against solid teams, and they’re a solid team. We have some things to shore up, but we’ll move on and we’ll get better.”

The first half belonged solely to Fulton, as it used every facet of its game to score points. That resulted in six different Steamers reaching paydirt, including a spiffy 30-yard counter by senior end Ty Pauline, as he got outside the Hall defense to put the Steamers up 35-0 with 1:48 to play in the first half.

Just as the floodgates had opened up and the Steamers poured on the touchdowns in the first half, the rain clouds moved in and drowned the

field in water. That resulted in a sloshy and muddy second half that was rife with fumbles and short on points.

The two teams combined to score only 14 points in the second half.

“We still came out and competed in the second half, and I was happy with how they competed,” Tieman said. “I told them to come out and win the second half, and they did.

We won the second half, 8-6.”

Austin Rash scored two touchdowns for the Steamers. Austin Schroder and Michael Piddle also added rushing scores, with Erik North returning an interception 13 yards for another.

Hall was limited to just 157 yards of offense and also fumbled the ball 8 times on a field that would be better described as a puddle by the end of the game.

The Red Devils couldn’t find the end zone until there was just 1:22 left on a 6-yard scamper from sophomore Christian Stefaniak.

Stefaniak had three carries for 52 yards and a score to lead the offensive attack for the Red Devils, while junior Eric Cissell had eight tackles, including two solo for the Hall defense.

The Red Devils have a chance to even it up as they travel next Friday to Taylor Ridge to take on the Rockridge Rockets at 7:30 p.m.

PRINCETON — If anyone thought the Princeton Tigers graduated too much talent from its 3A quarterfinalists from 2015, Blake Janssen and mates gave them a reminder they are mistaken Janssen rushed for 224 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 40-20 win over Port Byron Riverdale in a TRAC crossover contest at Bryant Field Friday.

“It feels great to show that we are not willing to back down when people doubt us,” Janssen said.

PHS coach Jesse Snyder told his team not to be satisfied.

“I’m happy, but not satisfied,” he said. “We’re happy with the things we did, We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to continue work on,” he said. “We had penalties to clean up, got balls on the ground we’ve got to take care of. We’ve got to be a more disciplined football team. Luckily we came out and executed in situations and were able to make things happen.”

Janssen made things happen all night. He raced 67 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 13-0 lead in the second quarter following a firstquarter score by Bret Emmerson.

Riverdale’s Parker Corson ripped off a 81-yard score for the Rams, but Janssen answered right back, bust-

ing a 4th-and-1 play 63 yards for another quick six to give the Tigers a 19-6 lead with 6:53 to play in the second quarter.

Snyder said it was a big momentum swing for the Tigers.

“I think it was 4th-and-1, we got that big touchdown. We got the boys together and said we’re going to pick this thing up and let’s take it.

He stepped up and did a nice job,” Snyder said.

Janssen was hardly done. He took a pass from junior QB Garrett Allen 26 yards for another Tiger TD with 6.8 seconds remaining in the half to make it 27-6.

Late in the third quarter, he raced for a fourth touchdown, this time going 86 yards to paydirt to push the Tigers to a 40-6 lead.

“It was really great knowing that I could get the blocks to get down the field,” Janssen said.

“He did a nice job on our perimeter plays, and the offensive line did a nice job opening holes up and blocks maintaining their blocks to get them an opportunity,” Snyder said.

Austin Wetsel also got in on the opening-night fun with a 45-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Corson scored all three TDs for the Rams, rushing for 198 yards.

Milledgeville cruised to a 50-0 win over Durand to open the season at Floyd Daub Field.

Jeremy Bibler rushed nine times for 101 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown just 18 seconds into the game and another 5-yard score later in the first quarter.

Brexton Flynn rushed for three touchdowns and completed a touchdown pass to Cade Schave.

Flynn passed for 81 yards and rushed for 57 more.

The Missiles held Durand to 22 yards of total offense and two first downs in the game.

Polo 22, River Ridge 0: Randal Gabaldon opened the scoring with an 11-yard run in the first quarter and the Marcos never looked back in their home win.

Gabaldon then threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Mathew Cheeseman and Tristen Aguilar ran a score in from 38 yards out. Marcus Almasy added a safety.

Aguilar rushed for 116 yards on 17 carries. Gabaldon was 4-for-10 passing for 80 yards.

Amboy 20, Galena 14: Amboy edged Galena 20-14 to open their tenure in the NUIC with a win.

Dakota 14, West Carroll 0: Andrew Wenger of Dakota had 199 yards rushing in the win over the Thunder.

St. Catherine’s (Racine, Wis.) 29, St. Bede 14: The Bruins were defeated in Friday’s season opener across the state line at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. St. Bede took a 7-6 lead with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Bryant Eustice to Braidy Shipp.

The Bruins also got a 3-yard dive by Daryl Senica with 8:22 left in the fourth quarter, but trailed 26-14.

St. Catherine’s surged for a 20-7 halftime lead and stretched it 26-7 in the third quarter. The Angels added a fourth-quarter field goal.
