Davis leads BV to win Runs for 4 touchdowns, 88-yard interception to key victory

MANLIUS — Junior Drake Davis and the Bureau Valley Storm showed why they are the ranked in the state as they came away with a huge 36-24 Three Rivers Athletic Conference match up Friday in Manlius.

The BV signal caller and starting defensive back accounted for all five touchdowns for the Storm including four rushing touchdowns on 20 carries for 59 yards and an 88-yard pick six with 1:01 to play in the game to seal the Storm’s second victory of the season.

“I wasn’t going down,” Drake Davis said of the game clinching interception and runback. “I almost dropped it but I saw the opening and I went for it. I had to put the dagger in.”

Bryant Eustice tried to match Davis with a seven-yard scamper to tie the game with 5:08 left in the first half but it was all Storm all night from then on as the Storm scored 22 unanswered points before giving up a safety and an 11-yard scamper by senior Adam Poundstone.

“They’re a good team and they’re very well coached,” SBA coach Jim Eustice said. “It’s just breakdowns and when interceptions happen they can look like one guy’s fault

when they’re not, it’s a team game and we just have to get better in the red zone. The last two weeks the red zone has killed us and we have to get better.”

BV got the ball rolling in the direction as Drake Davis stepped in to the path of a Bryant Eustice pass and took it down to the four yard line.

Davis scored on the Storm’s very first offensive play from scrimmage as he raced around the left end and extended to ball towards the pylon and into the end zone for the first of his five scores on the night.

“I give all the credit for my touchdowns to my line and my teammates,” Drake Davis said. “I couldn’t have did what I did tonight without them.”

Victory is theirs Rockets’ passing game unstoppable in win over Trojans

MENDOTA – With 1 minute, 22 seconds remaining in Friday’s game against Mendota, Rock Falls coach Rich Montgomery called a timeout to work in a new play.

He wanted to make sure the Rockets could execute the victory formation.

They did, albeit with an offsides penalty, and pulled off a wild 53-48 victory against the Trojans at the Mendota Athletic Complex.

The Rockets (2-0, 2-0 Big Northern), who snapped a 25-game losing streak last week against Rockford Christian, have won their first two games for the first time since 2003.

They also avenged a 57-7 loss to Mendota in 2015, the Trojans’ only win last season.

“This is the best feeling ever,” senior wide receiver Roger Carlson said. “Last year when Mendota ran the score up on us, we gave up. We weren’t going to give up again this year. When it was 42-21, we weren’t going to let ’em go.”

Rock Falls trailed 28-7 late in the second quarter, but a touchdown pass from Logan Pillars to Carlson just before halftime gave the Rockets some hope. It turned out

to be the start of something big.

After opening the second half with a 3-and-out, Rock Falls scored on five consecutive possessions, with the passing game clicking on all cylinders. Pillars completed 25 passes, including 16 after halftime, for 412 yards and six touchdowns.

Carlson (10-172, 3 TDs) and Michael Berentes (9-97, 3 TDs) were his top targets.

“Offensively, we believed that we could throw on them, and obviously that came true in the second half,” Montgomery said. “We made a few tweaks, they gave us a couple of turnovers, and that was the difference. The guys just showed some resilience. When you’re trying to learn how to win, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you earn it. These guys fought hard the whole night. They earned it.”

New leaf turned by Rockets It had been a while – 1 year to be exact – since I had covered a Rock Falls football game.

The memory was not a pleasant one.

It was a mercy rule game against Marengo. In fairness, for a Rocket team in the midst of a long losing streak trying to find its way, an encounter with an ornery posse of Indians that would eventually advance to the Class 4A semifinals was no way to get things turned around.

Before that, my previous coverage of the Rockets was at Oregon in 2014. Two things stood out about that game. First, Rock Falls refused to punt, even from deep in its own territory. The result was predictable – short fields for the Hawks all night.

Second, the game was essentially over by the second quarter.

It was only a matter of how many touchdowns the Hawks felt like scoring. The best thing about the game was I could get to McDonalds to file my story, and still have to get back to the office in time to help put the sports section to bed.

Fast forward to Friday night.

Rock Falls at Mendota. The Rockets were coming in sky-high, after beating Rockford Christian last week. OK, let’s see if they can make it two in a row.

Rock Falls didn’t stop the Mendota rushing attack all night, but still, the Rockets found a way. The obvious reason is a passing attack that produced 412 yards and six touchdown passes from senior quarterback Logan Pillars. There were some other big reasons.

Rock Falls didn’t commit a turnover, while Mendota had three.

The Rockets were also solid on special teams. They recovered an onside kick when they were down 42-29, with Scott Spears playing the role of Johnny-on -the-spot and pouncing on a loose ball to fuel a rally.

And Rock Falls punted the ball! The first one of those was a 34-yard beauty by Pillars that was downed on the Mendota 4-yard line by Blake Wind.

That one play showed me a lot.

And maybe, just maybe, something really special is brewing in Rock Falls.

SAVANNA – Nine weeks passed last season before Eastland-Pearl City won a pair of games.

This year, they have won their first pair in as many weeks to start the season.

With Jayden Kempel’s 80-yard kickoff return to open the game, the Wildcatz set the tone early in a 32-14 win over the West Carroll Thunder at W.F. Massey Field in Savanna.

Kempel was touched only twice as he sprinted along the center of the field for an 8-0 lead after Keegan Schubert punched in a 2-point try.

The Wildcatz’s offensive line continued to create large holes, as they had their way with the Thunder (2-0, 2-0 NUIC Northwest) in the following drive. EPC’s rushing corps of Schubert, Jayden Kempel and Jarod Kempel combined for six first-down runs on 12 plays with few touches by the Thunder defense. Schubert capped the drive with a 1-yard dive with 2:51 left in the opening quarter.

West Carroll ran a five-front with three tackles, and the sight was a pretty one for junior 6-foot,

7-inch, 320-pound left tackle Payton Asche.

“We like down-blocking,” Asche said. “We like having those three tacks [tackles]. We work on it a lot, double-teams, down-blocking, all that stuff. That’s what we like to do.”

Schubert tallied 90 of his gamehigh 183 yards in the first half on 10 carries for the Wildcatz (2-0, 2-0), while the Thunder could only muster 53 rushing yards during the same time.

The Thunder milked plenty of clock to start the third quarter.

The drive concluded with a passing TD connection between twin brothers Kaleb and Kody Plattenberger from 5 yards out to gave the Thunder their first points of the season. Kody Plattenberger’s 2-point pass to Kaleb Hartman narrowed the Wildcatz’s lead to Craig Lang/Shaw Media 16-8.

Dukes ‘D’-up Hawks Wilcox, Cox lead Dixon through the air, on the ground

OREGON – Dixon got touchdowns passing and rushing from Noah Wilcox in the first half, and a lot of production from Arthur Cox in the second half to beat Oregon 24-7 on Friday at Landers-Loomis Field.

After the Dukes’ defense stopped Oregon on the Hawks’ first two drives, the Dixon offense turned decent field position into points. Wilcox got the scoring started, finding Jared Harrison on a post route as Harrison rumbled 50 yards for the score.

“I was looking at the linebackers and they were following my eyes,” Wilcox said. “I looked off the linebackers and went backside.”

Wilcox then took a read-option into the end zone.

Cox took over in the second half, rushing 12 times for 75 yards, including eight carries and two catches on a scoring drive early in the third quarter. He capped off the drive by catching a pass in the left flat and diving for the pylon to score.

“They called X-screen, and I thought I could make the

corner[back] miss and just dive,” Cox said.

Oregon’s offense struggled to get on track, gaining 16 yards in its first two drives. The Hawks started to get production from running backs Caleb Mennen and Jacob Cullen later in the half, leading to a touchdown with 8.8 seconds to go in the second quarter when Caid Chenoweth found Brandon Ramirez in the end zone.

“We kind of tried everything the first time through,” Oregon coach John Bothe said. “We kind of had to find out what worked.

They’re very good on defense, very big and physical and aggressive.”

Dixon stopped the Hawks on fourth down four times in the game, including the final two Oregon drives.

“Our defense has taken a lot of criticism, and they’ve taken that and channeled it into improving themselves,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “They played it against a very good Oregon team, and we did what we had to do tonight.”

Dixon’s final score came from a 42-yard punt return by Elijiah McGlown with 1:04 left in the third quarter.

This one’s for ‘P Cook’ Fischbach’s PAT lifts Mustangs past Princeton

MORRISON — Ethan Fischbach was kicking for all of his teammates on the field and for one looking down on the field Friday night at Bud Cole Field.

Fischbach kicked the goahead point-after-touchdown, clearing the crossbar by just inches to lift the Morrison Mustangs to a 13-12 victory over Princeton.

“I’m kicking for everyone.

This whole season is for my whole team and I’m kicking for P Cook,” Fischbach said. “He was a good friend of mine. He helped me with everything.”

“P Cook” is the nickname for the late Payton Cook, a Morrison junior student who died in an automobile accident this spring.

The Tigers and Mustangs traded touchdowns in the second quarter and again in the first half. Princeton missed both PAT attempts; the first kick was blocked and the second missed. Fischbach also missed his first attempt.

Fischbach got a second chance after Morrison quar-

terback Dylan Keller dove in to the goal line from 5 yards out with 6:57 left to play. Fischbach, who didn’t play football last year, admitted he was pretty nervous when he lined up his second attempt.

“I missed my first one, and realized what I needed to do,” he said.

Princeton coach Jesse Snyder, whose Tigers opened with a 40-20 win over Riverdale last week, said it was a tough loss to take.

“I think any game’s tough to lose, especially when you have high expectations,” he said. “I got to give it to Morrison. They did a nice job of execution and doing the things they need to do to be successful.”

Morrison drew first blood when Aaron Deter scored from 1 yard out with 2:29 left to put the Mustangs ahead 6-0.

Princeton evened the scored on a 10-yard scamper by junior quarterback Garrett Allen. The PAT was blocked for a 6-6 halftime tie.

Allen put the Tigers ahead with 1:06 left in the third quarter on a 16-yard strike to Colton Youngren.

Warriors waltz to win Sterling’s air assault overwhelms Dragons

PEKIN – Before Friday night, Sterling and Pekin had never met on the football field.

Afterward, the host Dragons may have second thoughts before honoring next year’s back half of the 2-year contract.

The fifth-ranked (5A) Golden Warriors got three touchdown passes and two scoring runs from quarterback Trey Morse, and took advantage of seven Pekin turnovers to waltz to a 54-13 victory at Memorial Stadium.

Sterling rolled up 523 yards in total offense and jetted to a 37-6 halftime lead, then set a running clock in motion when Latrell Vaughn’s 69-yard touchdown run pushed the margin to 47-6 on the final play of the third quarter.

“It was a good test for us because we weren’t able to run the ball as well as we normally do,” Sterling head coach Jon Schlemmer said. “They shut down our run game, and we had to do some things on the perimeter, and I was happy with the way we were able to throw the ball.”

Morse competed 9 of 17 passes for 182 yards and three scores, while running for a team-high 112 yards and two more touchdowns.

The visitors took a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Tony Diaz mid-

way through the first quarter, then got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff when Jayden Villegas’ jarring hit forced a fumble by Pekin’s Julian Hill to set up the Golden Warriors at the Dragons’ 7-yard-line.

Three plays later, Morse sneaked in from a yard out to make it 10-0.

“That [Villegas hit] was a big momentum boost,” Schlemmer said. “That got us going early.”

After another Pekin fumble, Morse found Marcus Shetter on a 34-yard, fourth-down scoring hookup. One series later, he connected with Alek Duran on a 29-yard strike to make it 23-0 with 9:18 left in the first half.

Hill returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to get the hosts within 23-6, but Trey Morse and Turner Morse collaborated on a 64-yard TD strike, and Trey Morse scampered in from 5 yards out on the next series.

Cardinals fly past Galena Polo picks up win; AFC holds off Warren; Missiles fall short in Freeport

In a little over 2 minutes of total possession in the first half, a speedy Forreston football team racked up seven scores against Galena. On the opening kickoff of the second half, Lane Henneman ran 95 yards for another quick strike and the running clock was on in a 41-13 Cardinal victory in Forreston.

So fast and deep at running back is the No. 1 team in 1A that the senior Henneman can’t even crack the starting offensive backfield of all juniors, including quarterback Hunter Daws.

“Lane’s a great athlete, but a second-string back for us,” Forreston coach Denny Diduch said.

With Galena befuddled trying to slow down Matt Akins, AJ Christensen and Gavin Fuchs, Daws broke free on a 44-yard score just before halftime for the 35-0 Forreston lead.

“We know they have a lot of speed,” Galena coach Ed Freed said. “We can’t give up the big strikes like we did.”

Forreston’s longest scoring drive was five plays, with Christensen going in from nine yards out on a sweep to the right side for a 6-0 lead. Akins made it 14-0 on a 2-yard plunge following a Pirate muffed punt.

Fuchs then ripped off a 62-yard

touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage following a Galena punt, increasing the lead to 21-0 late in the first quarter.

“We came out with a lot of intensity,” Fuchs said. “We had a slogan from coach Diduch’s daughter.

She said to play ‘lights out’. That’s what we did.”

AFC 14, Warren 12: Adam Hart opened the scoring, and Stephen Brooke put the game out of reach as the Raiders held on for an NUIC Upate win in Franklin Grove.

Hart ran for a 6-yard touchdown with 6:54 to play in the first, before Warren asnwered with a 7-yard run of its own less than 4 minutes later. Both extra-point kicks failed.

Brooke scored on a 12-yard run at the end of the second quarter, and Hart rushed in to push the lead to 14-6. Warren (0-2) scored on a 30-yard pass with 5:46 left in the game, but AFC (1-1) defended the two-point pass and hung on for a win.

Polo 45, Durand 6: The Marcos (2-0) scored at least one touchdown in every quarter, and racked up 459 total yards en route to an NUIC crossover win in Durand.

Polo’s Tristen Aguilar rushed for 202 yards on 16 carries, and had touchdown runs of 47, 6, 2 and 70 yards. Reid Taylor added scores from 1 and 4 yards out, while Justin Young had a 2-yard TD run.

Orion 42, Erie-Prophetstown 0:

The Panthers (0-2) were driving into the red zone in the quarter, but couldn’t find a way to score.

Those scoring chances dried up for E-P as the game went on as the Chargers cruised to a Three Rivers crossover win in Orion.

Orion (2-0) led 14-0 at halftime on a passing and rushing touchdown, then opened the game up in the third and took a 35-0 lead into the final quarter.

Aquin 14, Milledgeville 12: The Bulldogs opened the scoring with a 40-yard punt return with 6:23 left in the first quarter, and took a 7-0 lead into halftime in an NUIC Upstate game in Freeport.

Aquin (2-0) then took a 14 lead on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 6:12 to play in the third, before the Missiles mounted a comeback. Carson Boyer ran it in from 5-yards out with less than a second to play in the third , but the twopoint try failed.

Milledgeville (1-1) then cut the deficit to 14-12 when Brexton Flynn hooked up with Boyer on a 46-yard touchdown pass with 7:14 remaining in the game. The run was stuffed on the two-point try, and the MisChris Johnson/Shaw Media siles couldn’t score again.

FULTON – If anyone looks to make a highlight film for Eli Leffelman after this season, a good place to start would be the fourth quarter of Friday’s game in Fulton.

Forward to about every key moment in the final minutes of Newman’s 30-22 victory in a Three Rivers crossover game and Leffelman’s No. 17 was probably there.

The biggest being a 45-yard touchdown reception from Landen Vesley with 2:05 left in the game that came only moments after the Steamers (1-1) had tied the score at 22.

“I took the field after they scored and focused on something we do called ‘why I play,” Leffelman said. “I was thinking about that while I ran that route, and I just wanted to make it happen.”

Leffelman said that he plays for Donavon Hopkins, a 16-year-old Newman student who was killed in a fire last January along with four other members of his family.

“It motivates us to try our hardest and never give up,” Leffelman said.

Leffelman, who also had an interception in the fourth quarter and a total of 11 tackles, wasn’t done after the TD catch.

The Steamers, as they had done all night, refused to cave with time running low and down by eight.

On the third play of the ensuing drive, 5-foot-8, 225-pound fullback Michael Pidde broke into the open for a 33-yard gain, and it was Leffelman from his safety position that made the tackle at the 10-yard line.

“He’s such a load,” Leffelman said. “He’s low to the ground, and he runs so hard. I just tried to edge in next to him to get him down.”

“It was great that we had guys make the big plays when we needed them,” Newman coach Mike Papoccia said. “But we kept putting ourselves in tough spots. Indians clip Amboy Wenger leads Dakota resurgence in second half

AMBOY – Despite what the rushing totals in the stat sheet might say, Amboy made it quite apparent Friday night that opponents will find it quite difficult to run over the Clippers this year.

An incredible 20-point secondquarter rally had Amboy thinking upset, and fifth-ranked Dakota stumbling to find its corner heading into halftime, but in the end, the perennial powerhouse Indians pulled away for a 38-20 victory thanks in large part to 296 rushing yards from junior Andrew Wenger.

At one point in the first quarter, the Indians scored on three consecutive offensive plays, including an 80-yard run by Wenger and a 90-yard reception by Brock Duncan. The result was an 18-0 Dakota lead and a feeling on the Amboy sideline that the game might be a completely miserable experience.

However, Amboy senior Alexis Gutierrez barreled his way for a hard-fought first down on a fake punt late in the first quarter, sparking a touchdown drive. The Clippers forced a punt and a turnover on the next two Dakota possessions, and cashed both in with two more scoring drives.

The latter was capped a play that,

had the game turned out differently, might have become the stuff of legend in Amboy. Facing a thirdand-long from the Dakota 18-yard line with just 16 seconds left in the half, Amboy quarterback Jordan Hochstatter found himself flushed from the pocket with no open receivers.

He ran around, then ran around some more, and then some more, until it became apparent that the clock would expire. With his coaching staff freaking out on the sideline at the missed chance for a field goal attempt, Hochstatter sliced and diced, turned the corner and snuck in the end zone with all 11 Dakota defenders chasing him down.

The remarkable play gave his team an unlikely 20-18 lead, and left the Amboy faithful rocking and rolling into the break.

“I needed to make a play or do something. I had some good blocks from my wide receivers,” Hochstatter said.

The second half didn’t have the same energy for the Clippers, who just couldn’t stop Wenger.

“In the second half, [Dakota] just dominated the line of scrimmage,” said Amboy coach Gary Jones. “We have a lot of work to do on defense.
