Mission accomplished St. Bede seniors get their win over rival Hall

PERU — St. Bede seniors Brady Booker, Braidy Shipp and Michael Manning had never beaten archrival Spring Valley Hall in 3 years of varsity gridiron meetings. Consider that scratched off their bucket list.

The Bruins came on strong in the second half, outscoring the Red Devils 42-0 over the final 24 minutes of play to win going away 59-13. They put the running clock into affect late in the third quarter.

“We like to tell the guy it’s just another game, because it’s a long season, we’ve got bigger goals than winning just one game. For some of the guys who have played varsity all four years we’ve come through a stretch, coming close, and me not being able to play last year, it feels good,” Booker said.

SBA coach Jim Justice acknowledged it was a big deal for his seniors.

“Before the game, they pointed out they’ve never beaten Hall. I was like, ‘Wow, you’re right,’” SBA coach Jim Eustice said. “Michael Manning’s from Ladd and Joey Acosta is from Spring Valley. We’ve got guys who are from there. It’s a big deal for those guys to beat Hall their senior year.

“As a program, as a team, as coaching staff, we just needed a win. Didn’t matter who we were playing, we just

needed to win tonight and it feels good.”

Still, it took awhile to shake the rival Red Devils. Hall overcame a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to close within 17-13 at halftime on the strength of two TD passes by Hall junior quarterback Cade Wozniak.

Then the Bruins got down to business. Adam Poundstone, a senior transfer from Ottawa, scored his third and fourth touchdowns of the game in the final three minutes of the third quarter. His 54-yard romp with 50.5 left in the third stretched the Bruins’ lead to 30-13.

“I saw my line give me good blocks and free space to run through. It was nice,” said Poundstone, who racked up 174 yards rushing on 13 carries, including two first-quarter scores.

Senior quarterback Bryant Eustice completed TD passes to Nick Szczepaniak (30 yards) and Josh Sapp (5) to go up 45-13 late in the third quarter.

Eustice said he challenged his team at halftime to execute better offensively.

“Finally in the second half we seemed to execute real well. It felt good,” he said. “We’ve always believed. We’ve been moving the ball and we finally put it away once we got down there. Something that’s really been a focus and we got it done tonight.”

Last-second strike Late Flynn-to-Boyer TD pass seals Missiles’ comeback

MILLEDGEVILLE – With 18 seconds left in Friday’s game, the Milledgeville Missiles lined up with the ball at the AFC 10-yard line hoping their luck at the end of quarters would change.

Brexton Flynn took the snap and then took a step back before firing the ball out to sophomore Carson Boyer near the sideline. Boyer turned, followed a pair of blocks, and zipped into the end zone.

Boyer tacked on the 2-point conversion to complete Milledgeville’s come-from-behind 22-19 victory over the Raiders at Floyd Daub Field.

“Just never give up,” Boyer said.

“That’s what we learned from this. We can never give up.”

The Missiles, who trailed 19-0 at half, pulled within five points of the Raiders with 4:30 left in the game on the exact same swing pass that won it minutes later.

That time, Boyer took the pass from Flynn on fourth down from the AFC 30-yard line and danced down the sideline for a touchdown.

“He’s electric,” Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble said. “We know he can do those sort of things, but it says a lot for a kid

to make plays like that in only his second varsity game.”

Millegeville (2-1, 2-1 NUIC Upstate) turned the momentum to start the third quarter with an 11-play, 48-yard drive that featured the bruising running of Kyle Forbes.

Flynn scored on a 1-yard plunge to get Milledgeville on the board.

“They made an adjustment in the second half by reading where our linebackers were going,” AFC coach Brad Winterland said.

“That was the difference, and we didn’t adjust to that.”

Forbes rushed for 72 yards on 18 carries in the second half, and 93 yards in the game.

The Missiles’ defense held AFC to 34 yards of second-half offense after allowing a 172 rushing yards in the first half.

Trip back in football time MILLEDGEVILLE – Driving up to Milledgeville on Friday, I have to admit to feeling a bit nostalgic. Maybe it was because I hadn’t covered a football game at Floyd Daub Field since 2008. Maybe it was for the myriad good memories I have from the little town crossed by state Route 40 and a set of railroad tracks. The sensation only increased as I got closer.

The American flags lining the street. The war memorial as you pull into the school. The field nestled between a cornfield, a highway, a brick school and a line of trucks and mini-vans sitting atop a hill. Heck, there’s even apple pie served at the concession stand. (It’s pretty darn good). Yes, it’s a step back in time. So was the football played between the AFC Raiders and Milledgeville Missiles – a game in which the Missiles rallied from 19 down at half to win 22-19. The teams lined up and smashed each other in the

mouth – seriously. Then they lined up and did it again. If it were a psychology test, it’d resemble the one where the mouse keeps biting the electrified cheese. There wasn’t much learning, just repetitive collisions. The Raiders looked great in the first half as Milledgevillle struggled to contain an option that ran just as well in 2016 as it would have in 1966.

First, it was Adam Hart running to the left for big chunks. Then it was Stephen Brooke going the other way. It wore on the Missiles, and then a couple late second-quarter turnovers opened the door for AFC to notch two quick TDs for a 19-0 lead. The answer to this series of shots?Â

Well, the person with the solution was sophomore fullback Kyle Forbes. “He came up to me at halftime and said, ‘Just keep giving me the ball,’�

Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble said. ‘�I don’t care how much I get beat up, just keep giving it to me.’�

So they did. The 5-foot10, 155-pound back blasted through the middle behind the blocking of his line over and over and over again. In a rugged display of old-school football, Forbes changed the mood of the game by being hard-nosed.

Somewhere buried in some fictional handbook that defines Missile football – a book no doubt written by the Missiles former Hall of Fame coach Gary Hartje, who is an assistant for the team now – Forbes’ play would be the very example of what is expected. “Coach asked us if we had any ideas at half,�

Flags stop Rockets Penalties send Rock Falls backward in Week 3

ROCK FALLS – Rock Falls couldn’t stop going backward. The football team found no rhythm except its own beat of footsteps walking backward nearly the entire length of the football field.

A rash of penalties squashed any hopes at sustaining drives, and Rock Falls lost 28-6 to Big Northern opponent Genoa-Kingston at Hinders Field.

“We got in a hurry,” Rockets coach Rich Montgomery said.

“We tried to speed some things up the past couple week, and the kids were too anxious to do that tonight.”

Rock Falls had 13 penalties for 95 yards, and a few came at the worst times. A third-and-short turned into a third-and-long after a false start. A good kick return was negated by a personal foul. The Cogs, too, had their own issues and lost 102 yards on 11 penalties.

But G-K (3-0) made up for it with big plays and a smash-mouth running game. Two long passes overmatched the Rockets secondary and led to quick scores, while the rushing attack wore down Rock Falls’ front seven.

After a scoreless first quarter which saw a combined three punts and two lost fumbles, the Cogs found their way into the end zone in a hurry. Quarterback Zach Butler hooked up with Zach Miller for a 63-yard touchdown pass.

That same play would come back later to bite the Rockets early in the fourth quarter. Butler found running back Dan Guardi in the same seam for 54 yards, which set up one of tailback Aidan Simmons’ three touchdown runs.

Rock Falls (2-1), which passed for over 400 yards in last week’s win, couldn’t find that same magic. The Rockets mustered 158 total yards, with 97 coming through air. Quarterback Logan Pillars was hurried often, and found that his receivers were covered downfield.

Warriors get in gear Sterling offense finds rhythm to beat Pioneers

STERLING – Sterling’s offense struggled on its first two drives, then found the end zone with the next five, beating Alleman 49-7 on Friday at Roscoe Eades.

After 21 yards of total offense and a turnover in the first two drives, Sterling gained a total of 328 yards on the next five drives.

“We started off a little sloppy and we definitely wanted to change that up,” Sterling quarterback Trey Morse said. “Once we came in after that turnover, we just turned it up. There was something that clicked.”

Nyrel Sullivan opened the scoring, capping off a nine-play, 86-yard drive with a 35-yard touchdown.

“At first I was heading to the sideline, but I cut up,” Sullivan said. “The previous play when I was running that play, I saw that there was one guy and I tripped up. The second time, I saw there was one guy and I beat him.”

After Sterling stopped Alleman again, the Warriors made it 14-0 when Morse hit Marcus Shetter streaking up the left sideline for a 57-yard touchdown.

“It was a fake bubble [screen] pass to Turner [Morse] and Marcus just got a good release,” Trey Morse said. “He beat the guy.

He’s got a lot of speed. He did the same thing last week and we’ve kind of got that connection.”

Sterling also got a 10-yard touchdown from Sullivan and a 34-yard touchdown from Andrew Spaulding in the second quarter.

Latrell Vaughn and Marquez Williams scored in the second half.

Sterling got a touchdown pass from Alek Duran to Turner Morse.

Duran set up the score with a winding 61-yard carry.

Trophy time for Tigers Princeton takes down longtime rival Boilermakers

PRINCETON — A trio of seniors led the Princeton Tigers to a 28-20 victory in the 118th meeting with the Kewanee Boilermakers and help them maintain the traveling trophy.

Senior fullback Bret Emmerson was the first to step forward. Up 6-0, the Boilermakers made an inadvisable fake punt attempt at midfield and turned the ball over on downs to the at midfield.

From the 50, Emmerson’s number was called five straight times and each time he gained solid yards. The fifth time was a 30-yard scamper to tie the score at six. Emmerson was grinding out yards all night, finishing with 132 yards.

“If a play continues to work we’re going to stick with it,” Emmerson said.

“I gave everything I had.”

Colton Youngren was the next to step in the spotlight. With less than two minutes to go in the half, he plowed over Kewanee senior running back Drake Charlett who was bobbling the ball.

Then he crawled over top of him and landed on the loose ball.

“I saw the ball, and I took the opportunity and it paid off,” he said.

Youngren would add another fumble recovery on a punt in the second half.

With only 5.3 seconds remaining in the half, Youngren then went up high to wrestle a touchdown away from

Boilermaker defender Steven Earthely. A two-point conversion sent the Tigers into the half with a 14-6 lead.

It looked as if it would be a defensive battle the rest of the way as the score held through the third quarter.

But the flood gates opened in the final period.

Austin Wetsel, the Tiger’s third senior star got things started when he ran through a big hole on a trap play created

by Vincent Vergamini and Chase Tatum.

He didn’t stop until 37 yards later when he was in the endzone.

“It felt awesome,” Wetsel said. “I have to give all the credit to my linemen.”

A successful point after by Judson Wright gave the Tigers what appeared to be a commanding 21-6 lead with 8:57 to go in the game.

Dukes get it done Big plays help Dixon overcome turnovers, penalties

DIXON – At several points during Dixon’s 36-7 win over Rockford Christian on Friday night, it was clear that the Dukes could do nearly anything they wanted to against the Royal Lions.

Unfortunately, Dixon also showed that it was just as capable of doing many things it didn’t want to do, as well.

Highlighted by 260 rushing yards from junior running back Arthur Cox and two long returns from classmate Elijiah McGlown, the Dukes remained unbeaten on the season despite fumbling the ball six times, turning it over three times, and committing 47 yards in penalties.

“Our offense really struggled tonight,” Cox said. “I thought our defense really stepped up tonight and played well for us.”

In the first quarter, it was hard to really assess Dixon’s offense as either good or bad, as the Dukes had just four offensive plays in the frame, with one long touchdown and one turnover. They still managed to leave the period ahead 15-0, with Cox breaking free for a 61-yard run and McGlown jumping a short slot route to intercept a Lions pass for a 45-yard touchdown return.

“I saw a hitch coming, and I jumped it,” McGlown said. “I got in front of it and ran it back.”

Dixon’s second turnover, this time deep in Rockford Christian territory, stymied a drive 5 minutes before halftime, and the Lions drove inside the Dixon 40 with a chance to pull within one score of the Dukes. They elected to punt, however, on fourthand-14 with a minute left in the half – and McGlown struck again, returning the punt 93 yards to break the game open heading into the break.

“I saw a lot people on my right, so I ran left and saw a gap,” McGlown said. “I shot through it.”

Steamers pull out ‘W’ McClary’s field goal with 20 seconds left lifts Fulton past Orion

Cole McClary’s 28-yard field goal with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter lifted Fulton to a 24-21 victory over visiting Orion on Friday night.

Fulton (2-1) trailed 21-14 entering the final quarter, but tied it up with a 34-yard scoring pass from Tyler Sweenie to Tyler Bruggenwirth with just under 6 minutes to play.

Bruggenwirth scored the game’s first touchdown on a 27-yard interception return a minute into the game.

Michael Pidde rushed for 67 yards, while Sweenie passed for 62 to pace the Fulton offense.

Drake Schultz had 25 carries for 136 yards and a touchdown to lead the way for Orion (2-1).

Tavian Moniski added 51 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

North Boone 21, Oregon 14: The Hawks squan-

dered some opportunities and were handed a loss by the Vikings in Poplar Grove.

Jacob Coleman rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown to pace the Oregon offense, but his fumble at the North Boone 14-yard line in the final minute sealed the Hawks’ fate.

Oregon (1-2) also fumbled deep in North Boone territory early in the game, and ran out of time in the same position just before halftime.

Caleb Mennen scored Oregon’s second touchdown with 9:30 to go in the game, and a 2-point conversion brought the Hawks to within 21-14.

Clippers learn to finish Amboy builds lead with the run

AMBOY – Finishing games was a point of emphasis for the Amboy Clippers this week, especially after giving up a halftime lead last week in a loss to state-ranked Dakota.

Despite West Carroll playing a much-improved third quarter after being shut out at half, the Clippers held on to a halftime lead against the Thunder at The Harbor and carried it all the way to a 28-6 win.

The Clippers (2-1, 2-1 NUIC Northwest) used their signature running game to amass 130 of 168 yards of offense in the first half, against the Thunder’s 71 total.

However, the Thunder (0-3, 0-3) made key stops to force longyardage situations, including four tackles for loss in the third quarter.

Only 36 yards were collected by the Clippers in the first 18 minutes of the second half on 14 carries, but junior running back Ben Rhine more than doubled that figure on a touchdown run of 38 yards off a hole from right tackle.

“The line blocked great,” Rhine said. “The holes they were making were beautiful, and made it

easier on us, the backs.”

Rhine tallied 111 yards on 21 carries, and put up a sack of Thunder junior quarterback Kody Plattenberger on a fourth-and-long play to set up his score. Rhine opened up the game with an 11-yard run to cap a 61-yard opening drive.

The following drive for the Thunder was stopped prematurely when Cain Powers picked up a fumble at midfield and ran 48 yards for a 15-0 lead. Alexis Gutierrez capped the Clippers’ firsthalf scoring with field goals of 24 and 36 yards.

The Thunder found the end zone just once, when Plattenberger found junior wide receiver Jacob Dunk on a 24-yard left-corner cross pass.

“The big thing that we talked about is finishing a game,” Amboy coach Gary Jones said. “We didn’t finish the last game after we had [a 20-18] lead at half. We came out and finished this one.”

Plattenberger was 5-for-16 in passing for 57 yards, while Kaleb Hartman led the Thunder rushing corps with 66 yards on 12 carries.

“I thought we did some real good things in the second half,” West Carroll coach Matt Leitzen said. “The score doesn’t show it, but in my mind, we won the third quarter.”

Polo stopped Stockton avenges running-clock loss

POLO – After losing to Polo six of the last seven times and having a running clock put on them last year, Stockton got sweet revenge against the Marcos with a convincing 50-6 win.

“We had this game circled since last year,” Stockton quarterback Hayden Fox said.

“We had to get back at them.”

With blitz packages, Polo was able to hold Fox in check early on with three sacks for minus 38 yards, but the 3-year starter was soon able to handle anything the Marcos could throw at him.

Fox completed 18 of 30 passes for 185 yards and ran 15 times for three touchdowns.

Most impressive, though, was his ability to convert thirdand-long and fourth down situations.

After the Blackhawks kept Polo out of the end zone on a first-and-goal on the opening possession of the game, Fox drove his team 95 yards, finding Nolan Buske on fourthand-10 for a 28-yard score.

Proving he wasn’t invincible, a fumble by Fox after being sacked led to Polo’s lone touchdown.

Tale of two halves Rockets launch late as Storm ‘implode’

MANLIUS – Two halves of football couldn’t have been any different as the Bureau Valley Storm suffered a 32-20 loss at the hands of the visiting Rockridge Rockets Friday in Manlius.

With 9:05 to play in the first half a 16-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Drake Davis to senior wide receiver Jay Edlefson put the Storm up huge 20-0 as the Storm started the game playing stellar in all facets of the game.

The home crowd was raucous at this point but a change at quarterback for the Rockets from junior Michael Griffin to Riley Fetterer was the change that the Rockets needed. The fleet of foot sophomore tacked on the Rockets first score from three yards out with 1:03 to play in the first half.

“We were up 20-0 and had the opportunity to go up 27-0 and we didn’t,” BV coach Spencer Davis said. “They took that opportunity and marched down the field and scored and we can’t allow that.”

BV went into the half feeling good about their 20-6 lead but the Storm came out flat and allowed the Rockets, particularly Fetterer, to change the trajectory of the game.

Fetterer then proceeded to dismantle the BV defense as the Rockets completely abandoned the pass game and Fetterer tagged the Storm for four second half rushing scores.

“We just imploded,” Davis said. “When it starts to spiral like that with a young squad it’s kind of hard to turn it around as we showed tonight. Their line started to take control of the game and when they brought in that new quarterback we just couldn’t get a hand on him.”

The mid-game substitute racked up five scores on the evening, including a 66-yard scamper with 2:46 to play in the third quarter.

Fetterer ended the night with 271 yards on 22 carriers to run away with the game.
