Stark reality Rebels prove to be too much for Marcos in 1A second round

WYOMING – There was no hiding from the Stark County football team.

The top-ranked Rebels sliced up the Polo defense, and put a lid on the Marcos’ offense that bubbled with speed and athleticism throughout the season.

Stark County ended the Marcos’ season in a 49-12 blowout at Gary Johnson Field in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs. It was Polo’s most lopsided loss this season.

“It’s disappointing,” Polo quarterback Brody Grobe said.

“We hoped for more of a game than that. It was embarrassing.

What we did was not Marcos football.”

The Rebels (11-0) marched down the field with little resistence throughout the game, and scored touchdowns on each of their seven first-half possessions.

The Marcos (8-3) had a tough task in containing Rebels quarterback Joe Charvat, who played tricks on the Polo defense with deceptive zoneread plays, and deep passes to streaking receivers. His ability

“When we watched the tape, we thought we would be able to get their defense to shift where we wanted,” Charvat

said. “Then we just did the opposite of what they were expecting.

“I knew that if I made the right reads, we were going to get some good yards, and we just kept moving the ball.”

Charvat ran for 61 yards on six carries and ran for two scores, while throwing for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Chase Johnston gained 84 yards and scored twice, and Logan Hollis added another score.

“We knew they were good,” Grobe said. “But when we were on the field, it felt like we weren’t prepared for anything they did.”

The biggest blow came near the end of the first half. Stark County scored its final two touchdowns in the final 2 minutes of the first half.

Charvat returned a Polo punt 69 yards to the 6-yard line, which set up a Hollis score. On the Marcos’ ensuing possesion, Grobe was intercepted, which

set up the Rebels’ seventh and final touchdown, and put a running clock in effect for the entirerty of the second half.

“We just wanted to make it a game at that point,” Polo junior Richie Bartnick said about the halftime score. “We knew we probably weren’t going to come back and win, especially with the score what it was and with the running clock working against us.”

Grobe, who finished with 97 rushing yards, scored the lone first-half touchdown for the Marcos. The junior broke off a 48-yard run late in the first quarter to answer two quick Rebel scores. On a stretch run, Grobe bounced to the outside and made a slick cut up the middle between two defenders, and outran the Rebels defense to the pylon.

But while the scoring run breathed life into a shellshocked Polo team, the Stark County defense didn’t allow the Marcos much else. Polo tried that run several more times, but wasn’t successful.

“There wasn’t much there,” Polo coach Andrew Hofer said.

“They swarmed on defense, and they were fast to the ball.”

Hope crushed Cardinals turn on afterburners in rout in 1A second round

FORRESTON – Before kickoff of Saturday’s 1A second-round playoff game between Forreston and Chicago Hope, a Russian MIG, complete with afterburners, treated fans to a rare flyover. Once action started, it was the talented stable of Forreston ballcarriers using their afterburners to zoom past Hope Academy in a 49-6 romp.

The Cardinals (10-1) put up 329 rushing yards that stunned the visitors from the Northeastern Athletic league. And that was just in the first half, as Forreston took a 35-0 lead.

“We saw what’s it’s like to be at another level,” Hope coach Stephen Pagh said. “That’s where we want to get to.”

Hope (9-2) came in with four backs averaging over 13 yards per carry, and Keandre Murph ran for 16 yards on the first play from scrimmage. The Eagles then ran into a brick wall on the next three plays and had to punt.

“It was good to get that first stop,” Forreston coach Denny Diduch said. “Their backs, especially [Lafayette] McGrary, were strong, fast, and elusive.

On Forreston’s second play, it was Max Barkalow giving Hope an indication of what lay ahead with a 78-yard sprint for a touchdown. Another punt gave the ball back to Forreston at its own 27-yard line.

This time, it took six plays to score, as Logan Rogers (9 rushes, 126 yards) used precision downfield blocking to run in from 20 yards out. In that drive, Robert DeVries threw his

only pass of the game, a sprintout toss of 25 yards to tight end Dylan Hensley.

“Our boys take pride in their blocking, and really like to hit,” Diduch said.

Rogers then recovered a fumble on Hope’s next possession, and the Cardinals were on the move again. Barkalow tacked on another score for a 20-0 firstquarter lead.

“We really hit our base plays,

and the runners were hitting the holes made for them,” Forreston senior lineman Jacob Cunningham said. “We are old and experienced in the line. The little things we focused on in practice paid off.”

Murph and McGrary had long runs to set up Hope near the Cardinal goal line, but a DeVries fumble recovery stopped the drive.

“Those backs were talented,”

Forreston defensive coordinator Kyle Zick said. “A key was Robert slowing down the big plays from his safety position.”

In their longest drive of the game, and with 210-pound fullback Spencer Cruthis carrying most of the load, the Cardinals marched 88 yards in 12 plays to make it 28-0 on Rogers’ second touchdown.

“Coach likes to mix it up a lot on the run,” said Cruthis, who had twice as many carries as any other back. “I’m pretty much the only fullback, and he likes hitting up the middle. That throws the other teams off.”

Another punt gave the ball back to Forreston at the 16-yard line.

In a perfect ending to the half, DeVries efficiently led his team for a score on the last play before time ran out. His 4-yard keeper on fourth down made it 35-0.

Forreston (10-1) will travel to Stark County (11-0) Saturday for a quarterfinal battle between the two most recent teams ranked No. 1 in Class 1A. Two years ago, Stark County defeated Forreston in the quarterfinals 50-22.

“We’re excited to play them.

We have some making up to do for what happened 2 years ago,” Diduch said.

Seven the hard way Schaney runs over defender for go-ahead score in Lanark

LANARK – Eric Schaney lowered his shoulder and, like a pickup truck hitting a safety cone, flattened a Hall defender before sprinting past a halfdozen other Red Devils en route to an impressive, pivotal 80-yard touchdown run.

The rest of Saturday’s secondround game wasn’t nearly as one-sided for Schaney and the undefeated Eastland-Pearl City football team, but the Wildcatz were nevertheless able to hang on for a come-from-behind 27-20 victory. “We started out shaky at first, but we pulled it out. It was a big team win,� Schaney said. “Our guys up front controlled the game.�

EPC, which ran roughshod over everything in its path so far this season, will likely have to play better than it did Saturday in order to advance. It was the first time this season that EPC found itself trailing in the second half, but if doubt was creeping into the minds of the players, Schaney made sure to erase them. His jawdropping run that showcased both his power and open-field

speed came on the very first play from scrimmage after Hall’s go-ahead touchdown. It gave his team 21-20 lead. “I thought I was going to get caught. I was just thinking, ‘I have to run hard for our team,’� said Schaney, who finished with 153 rushing yards. “We needed that drive.�

If the ’Catz’s response to falling behind was perfect, Hall had the exact opposite response.

The Red Devils fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and six plays

later, Schaney bowled through the line for the last of his three touchdowns in the game.

For good measure, he added two sacks on defense. But for as gritty as Schaney’s effort was, the one by senior receiver Walter Ollie might have been more impressive. Playing on a torn meniscus from an injury suffered last week against Amboy, Ollie played with a big knee brace and was limited to four touches on offense. But he had two big interceptions

on defense, including one on a halfback pass with 2 minutes left in the game that stalled what had been a successful Hall drive, and essentially sealed the victory for the Wildcatz.

Ollie is expected to have surgery on the knee in the offseason. “He’s not going to make [the injury] worse by playing on it, but his game depends on his ability to cut and slash, and with that big brace on, it limits his ability to do that,� Asche said. “But he still wasn’t afraid to make big plays for us today.�

EPC quarterback Deven Heeren had 105 passing yards, all in the first half, and was 3-for-3 on a pivotal touchdown drive late in the second quarter. Hall had taken a 7-0 lead with just 1:27 remaining in the half, but Heeren orchestrated an efficient four-play, 71-yard drive in just 35 seconds to send the game into halftime tied 7-7.

Shadow dancing Golden Warriors compete with powerhouse Hurricanes

STERLING – Brandon Dennis watched a shadow to avoid a tackle on a long touchdown run.

He and his fellow Sterling seniors hope that their examples will stand tall, leaving the past in the shadows and starting a new era in Golden Warrior football.

Warriors coach Jon Schlemmer hopes that Saturday’s competitive 38-17 loss to Woodstock Marian in the second round of the 5A playoffs is a sign that his program is ready to make its way out of the shadows cast by the powers of the state.

“This is never easy to say goodbye,” Schlemmer said.

“But I think this was a step forward for the program. We want to be a team that can compete with the best. I think we competed until the end today. We just couldn’t hold them down the whole way.”

After a defensive stop to open the second half, the Warriors were pinned deep inside their own territory at the 10-yard line. A keeper by quarterback Sterling Thornton netted 3 yards.

On the next play, Dennis got behind the Hurricanes’ corner.

Thornton lofted a pass, and Dennis waited under it. He made one man miss, and then watched the ground because he knew that speedy Jordan Niemeyer would be coming.

“The sun was at our backs, so I was watching the shadows and that’s how I knew what angle to take to avoid the tackle,” Dennis said. “When I made it in [the

end zone], it felt like we had the momentum.”

Dennis zigged when Niemeyer dove for the tackle. Dennis stumbled, but regained his feet and outraced another Hurricane down (and across) the field for an 87-yard touchdown play to tie the score at 17 with 8:47 left in the third quarter.

It was the second 85-plus

yard TD pass of the game for the Warriors. The first came in the first quarter, as Ty Shetter won a jump ball with a Marian defender and then broke free for an 87-yard TD. “We saw on tape that they were a team that made big plays,” longtime Marian coach Ed Brucker said. “We simply made too many mistakes. It gave them the chance for the big plays.”

The Dennis touchdown tied the score, but it served as a wake-up call for the Hurricanes.

Marian’s offense has been predicated on the arm of Miami (Ohio) recruit Billy Bahl at quaterback. While Bahl threw for 206 yards, he was 14-for-30 with an interception.

The Hurricanes (7-4) turned to the run, using counters and traps inside the tackles with running backs Jarryd Cabusao and Mike Velazquez. Marian

started eating up big chunks of yards that led to three unanswered touchdowns after the Dennis TD. “They found something that worked, and they stuck with it,” Dennis said. “That’s what good teams do. We did OK against the pass, but they found something in the running game.”

“We’re going to need the run, too,” Brucker said. “They did a good job today getting big yards. We’ll need that balance to keep going.”

After the Thornton-to-Shetter TD in the first quarter, Niemeyer took the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown to tie the score.

Marian drove 50 yards in a drive that spanned the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second. It was capped by the first of two Bahl 1-yard TD sneaks.

Sterling’s Tony Diaz made a 33-yard field goal with 1:50 left in the half to make the score 14-10.

The field goal was set up by a 62-yard scamper by Thornton.

The Sterling defense then held Marian out of the end zone on three plays from the 2-yard line right before half, forcing a 20-yard field goal by Jake Higgins to make it 17-10.

Old habits cost Dukes Penalties, turnovers difference in second-round road loss

MANTENO – Leaky defense, sputtering offense, and ball security had not been major issues for the Dixon football team in what had been a resurgent 2014 season.

They were on Saturday afternoon in a Class 4A secondround playoff game against Manteno.

The Dukes started fast, but then crumbled on their way to a 35-21 loss to the Panthers.

Manteno (10-1) took charge with a 28-0 run over a 13-minute span from late in the first quarter until halftime.

“Defensively, we got it slowed down in the second half, but we couldn’t do it in the first half,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “The second quarter really hurt us today, and I really didn’t see that coming. That’s the playoffs, though. A lot of emotion, and we just didn’t respond the way we should have today.”

Dixon didn’t have an answer for Manteno senior quarterback Ethan Kaufman, who did almost all of his damage in the first half. He was 5-for-9 for 146

yards, including touchdown passes of 30, 3, and 77 yards to Tucker Presler, and a 27-yarder to Nick Koehne.

Kaufman started the first-half scoring parade with a 20-yard TD run to knot the score at 7-7 with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

He rushed 13 times for 76 firsthalf yards.

The backbreaker was the 77-yard pass to Presler, on the final play of the second quarter.

Kaufman heaved the ball as far as he could, but Dixon defensive back Josh Wiseman was in prime position to intercept, or at least bat the ball away, in front of the Manteno bench.

Instead, the ball went through Wiseman’s hands and into Presler’s mitts, and Presler went untouched the rest of the way to give his team a 35-14 half-

time lead.

“Definitely it felt like if that happened,” Kaufman said, “that’s a sure sign we’ve got a chance to win this ballgame.

Sure enough, we did.”

All but one of Manteno’s 286 total yards came in the first half, as the Dixon defense forced 3-and-outs on six of the Panthers’ seven second-half possessions. The Dukes’ offense, however, was unable to take advantage, with just one TD in seven possessions.

Dixon’s lone score was on an 11-yard run by JD Gieson with 1:16 left in the third quarter, his third score of the game. The key play on the drive was a 33-yard pass from Gieson to Kyle LeBlanc on a fake punt.

Dixon’s eight wins are the most for the program since it matched that total in 2006.

Gieson hopes it’s just the beginning.

“Coach [Greer] Collins pointed out we’re one of the few groups that have done this for Dixon High School,” Gieson said. “We want to set a new tradition. We want the freshmen and sophomores to grow and develop in this atmosphere so they’re ready when their time is

Double trouble Comets cash in on Oregon turnovers, penalties in blowout

STERLING – In a clash between ball-control offenses, mistakes usually end up making all the difference.

The Newman Comets took advantage of two first-half turnovers by the Oregon Hawks on Saturday night at Roscoe Eades Stadium, turning them both into touchdowns en route to a 50-12 victory in a second-round Class 3A playoff game.

“They’re not going to make a mistake for you, so when you make a mistake, it’s a double whammy,” Oregon coach John Bothe said. “We got out of sync with turnovers and penalties; we hurt ourselves in the first half more than we have all year, and that was a tough deal.”

The first turnover swung the pendulum in Newman’s favor just a bit; the second shifted it for good.

Facing a fourth down on its opening possession, Oregon (6-5) looked to have moved the chains on a short run by Garrett Rude. But the ball popped loose, and Newman’s Trevor Bolin scooped it up and sprinted 41 yards to the end zone.

“It was crazy,” Bolin said. “I read the run and came up to fill in the outside in case he bounced it. I saw Shayne Allen come up and lay the hit, and the ball just hit the ground and bounced right up to me. I just grabbed it and ran for dear life.”

“It’s great to start off that way,” added Nolan McGinn,

who ran for 124 yards and three touchdowns. “I was back there [in the secondary] and I didn’t know what was going on, then I saw Trevor run into the end zone. We just kind of took the momentum from there.”

7 minutes off the clock. Garrett Rude (68 rushing yards) scored from 10 yards out, but the Hawks still trailed 8-6 after the conversion run failed.

Newman (11-0) made it 14-6 when McGinn crashed in from 4 yards out on the first play of the second quarter, then the Comet defense stepped up again.

On a third-down play, Oregon dropped back to pass for the first time. Dillan Heffelfinger read the play and tipped the pass to himself, returning the interception 34 yards to the Oregon 11. Two Heffelfinger runs later, Newman led 22-6.

“I didn’t think the first turnover flattened us out too much, because we did a nice job taking it to them on the next drive,” Bothe said. “But I thought the

second turnover got us out of sync, and that’s unfortunate when you’re playing a really, really good team.”

After an Oregon punt, Newman took over at its own 31, and aided by four Oregon penalties – two offsides, two personal fouls – cashed in on McGinn’s 7-yard scoring run to take a 30-6 lead into halftime.

The Comets got the ball to start the second half and marched 73 yards in six plays, capped by Heffelfinger’s 6-yard TD run.

“We’re just thriving off big plays right now, and we’re making them whenever we get the chance,” said Heffelfinger, who ran for 61 yards and two TDs. “We’re coming out and hitting everyone in the mouth, just playing real physical, and using it to get a lot of big momentum shifts.”

Oregon answered with a 25-yard scoring strike from Jerrick Orsted to Josh Cook, but the Comets responded themselves with a nine-play scoring drive that resulted in McGinn’s final TD run from 16 yards out.

Trick Tigers’ treat Gimmick play part of Byron’s romp over Chicago Harper

BYRON – In a 51-16 win over Chicago Harper on Saturday in the 3A playoffs, Byron got one slight scare.

With 32 seconds left in the first half, Harper scored on a 29-yard sideline fly-pattern pass to close within 16-8.

Just when it appeared the Tigers (7-4) would be content to take that lead into the third quarter, coach Jeff Boyer caught the visitors off guard with a trick play, in which Zack Cogswell lined up by himself away from the rest of the team and was snapped the ball for a 18-yard gain.

“That was a point in time where they were getting some momentum,” Boyer said. “Just don’t let anyone else know about that [trick] play.”

Then, quarterback Payton Janssen found Cogswell for a 46-yard touchdown pass with 5 seconds left to make it 23-8.

Harper (6-5) appeared demoralized, and Byron never looked back after that.

“That play took the wind out of us,” Harper coach Maris Carroll said.

“We made them throw, and our kids took control,” Boyer said.

The Tigers held Harper to neg-

“We made plenty of mistakes, but they beat us up front in the line,” Carroll said.

A wide open Jacob Elsbury got Byron on the board first with a

23-yard pass from Janssen.

“They were biting hard at the line,” Janssen said. “The playaction worked great.”

It was Janssen and Elsbury again for 29 yards on the next possession to key a 9-play, 59-yard scoring drive. Griffin Thatcher walked into the end zone from 1 yard out, and Byron led 14-0.

“Our offensive and defensive lines are big and physical, and made pushes the whole game,” Janssen said.

It was Elsbury and Riley Lorden, one of the so-called hogs from the line, that tackled Arjay Howard for the first safety of the game and a 16-0 lead. Before the game, the linemen were even brought onto the field by a livestock trailer from an undisclosed spot in town.

“Since we lost to Dixon (4228 in Week 9), everyone on the team has been stepping up,” Elsbury said.

Carlson and Peyton Keller closed out the scoring for Byron with touchdown runs.

“This is a great feeling to be back in the quarterfinals,” said Boyer, the quarterback on Byron’s 1999 state-championship team.
