Temporary jitters Polo shakes off nerves after first quarter to beat Crusaders

POLO – The last time the Polo Marcos competed in a playoff football game, the current senior class was in seventh grade.

You’ll have to excuse the Marcos, then, for starting Saturday’s first-round playoff contest as if they had no idea how to play in one.

Following one forgettable quarter, Polo unleashed an offensive and defensive onslaught for which it’s become known this season, slingshotting past visiting Ottawa Marquette 42-20.

The fourth-seeded Marcos (8-2) advance to take on top-seeded Stark County this weekend in Toulon, with a berth in the Class 1A quarterfinals on the line. “They were overpowering us, and we stepped it up,� said junior two-way starter Richie Bartnick. “We just want to keep on winning, one game at a time.

This feels great.�

some big plays that got things turned around.�

Bartnick was a key playmaker in a pivotal second quarter for Polo. Bartnick, a safety on defense, intercepted two passes in the period, with the first setting up a nifty, game-tying 34-yard touchdown run up the gut by Brooks Grobe with just over 1 minute left in the half.

For Bartnick’s second interception, he – and the Polo

faithful – owe a little tip of the cap to the coaching staff. In the final seconds of the half, the Crusaders (7-3) were deep in Polo territory, threatening to retake the lead. Usual Marquette quarterback, 6-foot-3 John Lechtenberg, was split wide left against the smaller Polo secondary, with backup quarterback Mike Stafford under center.

Perhaps Marquette would’ve been better off splitting Lechtenberg on the opposite side of the field than Polo coach Andrew Hofer, because when the members of the Marcos’ coaching staff noticed the No. 7 of Lechtenberg standing right in front of them, they quickly advised Hofer to call a timeout to set up a defensive strategy. “We had seen on their stat sheet that [Lechtenberg] had a touchdown reception, so we knew they had that play somewhere in their arsenal,� Hofer said.

Sure enough, following the timeout, Stafford was still under center, and he threw the ball

immediately to the tall Lechtenberg, but Bartnick was all over it and easily intercepted the pass at the 3-yard line. “I took my drop and read his eyes,� Bartnick said. “He threw it where I wanted him to.�

Bartnick added a third interception in the third quarter, setting up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Brody Grobe to Wyatt Patterson. Less than a minute later, Polo scored again – this time on a seven-yard run

by Dylan Beers – after another Marquette pick. At 35-14, the rout was on.

Aside from his three picks, Bartnick led the Marcos with 69 receiving yards on five catches, including a 21-yard exclamation point TD early in the fourth quarter that gave his team a 42-14 lead.

Brody Grobe completed all four of his second-half passes and finished 7-for-11 with 129 yards. His 51 rushing yards was second on the team to Brooks Grobe’s 61.

The dominating effort came despite a putrid first 13 minutes for the Marcos. Marquette ran 25 of the game’s first 30 plays, holding a 10:18-2:19 edge in time of possession following a 2-yard touchdown run by Lechtenberg.

Time runs out Trick plays only get Fulton so far in loss to Cardinals

FORRESTON – Forced to rely on gimmick plays and special teams to stay with the Forreston Cardinals, the Fulton Steamers were on borrowed time. That time soon turned into a running clock in a 53-20 playoff win by Forreston.

To start the game, Fulton recovered a kick that bounced off a Forreston player, and also had a kickoff return by Trey Simmons for a touchdown early in the second quarter. In between, the Steamers converted a fake punt and fake field goal into a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jack Lemke to Kegan North.

However, it only took Forreston all of 20 plays to score five first-half touchdowns, leading to a 39-12 lead. Any life Fulton had quickly evaporated.

“Once they started using trick plays, we knew they couldn’t beat us,” Forreston’s Dylan Hensley said. “We came in with a lot of intensity, and wanted to prove what we could do after a bad loss.”

So dominating was Forreston’s ground attack, it averaged more than 15 yards per carry in racking up 363 first-half yards.

“Their backs are up with the best we’ve seen,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “This is a darn good football team.”

Max Barkalow, who needed to pass a concussion test Saturday morning to be cleared to play, gave Forreston a 7-0

lead on a 3-yard run, culminating an 81-yard drive. Aaron Shelton, whose previous best game was 74 yards against Durand, topped that in his first two runs – 48- and 69-yard touchdowns.

Quarterback Robert DeVries,

who was injured against Eastland-Pearl City and had pneumonia earlier in the week, added a 15-yard score, and Barkalow closed out the half with an 8-yard score.

“We don’t know who to give the ball to, we have so many

backs,” said DeVries, who did not throw a pass.

The onslaught continued in the third quarter, as Forreston knocked Steamer quarterback Tyler Sweenie out of the game.

In the first quarter, Jacob Cunningham and Cody Stewart tackled him for a safety.

“We knew coming in they’d be fast and physical,” Lower said.

Logan Rogers made it 46-12 on a 16-yard gallop. Kaleb Reining recovered a loose ball on the ensuing kickoff, and Forreston was in the end zone two plays later on a Spencer Cruthis touchdown.

That set off the running clock with 6:17 left in the third quarter, with Forreston ahead 53-12.

“They get right into you, and you don’t know where they’re coming from,” Lower said. “It’s a team that I think will be playing deep in the playoffs, and would be very competitive in the Three Rivers.”

“Our offensive line dominated,” Forreston coach Denny Diduch said. “I like how we responded to their gimmick plays.”

Forreston will be home next Saturday, as it entertains Chicago Hope in a second-round matchup of 9-1 teams.

Demon hunting Wildcatz change trend against Three Rivers foe

LANARK – The Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz exorcised some demons Saturday night, and it came at the expense of the Amboy Clippers.

After struggling in early-round playoff games against Three Rivers opponents the past several years, the Wildcatz had no such trouble in their 2A firstround game against the Clippers. EPC scored on nine of its 10 possessions in a 54-6 rout.

“This was by far the most physical team we’ve played all year,” EPC senior running back Donny Groezinger said, “and we loved putting our line up against theirs. Our guys held their blocks, got to the linebackers, and made big holes for us to run through.”

The Wildcatz (10-0) amasssed 473 yards and 26 first downs, while holding the Clippers (5-5) to 139 yards and 10 first downs.

EPC outrushed Amboy 304-139, and outpassed them 169-0.

The ’Catz also scored after each one of Amboy’s five turnovers, with four touchdowns and a 23-yard field goal following three interceptions and two fumbles.

“Turnovers killed us, because they capitalized on every one of them,” Amboy coach Gary Jones said. “On top of that, they shut down our running game and forced us to pass, and that’s not our forté.

“That’s a very good team, with a lot of talented skill players, and we got down early and couldn’t come back.”

The biggest momentum shift came right off the bat, and turned the tables in EPC’s direction.

Amboy’s Drake Barlow returned the opening kickoff 57 yards to the EPC 40-yard line, but Amboy got just 2 yards in three plays and punted. On the Wildcatz’s first play of the game, Walter Ollie juked, cut

back and forth, and sprinted past the Clipper defense for a 76-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead.

“That was just huge for us,” said Groezinger, who had 69 yards rushing and 43 yards receiving. “After that kickoff return, I thought, ‘Oh no, it’s going bad for us.’ Then we got the stop, Walter broke the big run, and all of a sudden things were going great.’”

Barlow threw a third-down interception that Ollie – who left with an injured left knee late in the first quarter – returned 20 yards on Amboy’s next possession, and Silas Jacobs nailed a 23-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead. Keegan Schubert pounced on a Clippers’ fumbled pitch the next series, and Groezinger scored from 3 yards out for a 16-0 lead.

Clippers’ very next play turned into a Deven Heeren 1-yard TD plunge after a 12-play drive for a 22-0 lead.

“We knew we had to stop the run, but forcing those turnovers was even better,” said Schaney, who ran for 126 yards and three TDs, and added 27 yards receiving and another score. “We got stops, we got the ball back, and our offense got in rhythm ... and we kept building on that through the game.”

Dallas Appleman scored from 12 yards out to cap Amboy’s next possession, and EPC then just ran out the first-half clock for their only non-scoring possession.

But the Wildcatz weren’t done.

They scored on a 75-yard drive to open the second half, then turned another fumbled handoff and another Groezinger INT into TD passes to kick-start the running clock.

“It took a few minutes, but the guys really settled in,” EPC coach Randy Asche said. “We executed the game plan, took advantage of their turnovers, and forced them into predictable situations where we knew what they were going to do, and stopped it.”

Comets flip script Newman earns measure of revenge with blowout of Eagles

STERLING – Both the Newman and the Aurora Christian offensive and defensive lines passed the eye test as big, physical units. But it was the Comets who won the battle up front and controlled the game, delivering holes that looked like two-lane streets.

The top-seeded Comets ran their way to a 44-21 win over No. 8 Aurora Christian in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs at Sterling Chevrolet Field at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Newman played with thoughts of the 2012 team that the Eagles dismantled in the 3A semifinals.

With the win, Newman will play another home game next week in the second round against Oregon.

“We just couldn’t stop the run,” Eagles coach David Beebe said. “That’s what it all came down to.”

The Comets’ three-headed rushing attack of Dillan Heffelfinger, Brady Rude, and Nolan McGinn accounted for 430 of the Comets’ 437 rushing yards.

The Eagles (5-5) traveled 61 yards in nine plays to score on the game’s first possession when quarterback Austin Bray punched it in from the 1. The Eagles passed just twice on that opening drive, but that soon changed after Newman scored on its first three possessions of the first half.

McGinn answered the Eagles’

score with a 14-yard touchdown run, then Heffelfinger barreled through for an 8-yard score on Newman’s next possession.

But Heffelfinger wasn’t done.

On the ensuing Eagles’ drive, he sprinted into the backfield and recovered a fumble, taking it 75 yards for a defensive touchdown to put the Comets (10-0) up 22-7 with more than 8 minutes to play in the first half.

“Our defense made some great plays and some great open-field tackles,” Newman coach Mike Papoccia said.

“Our guys, on both sides of the ball, were just great today,” Rude said.

Rude added another score before halftime, a 76-yard run, on the second play of the drive after Eagles kicker Nick Van Gilse missed a 27-yard field goal wide right.

Out of the break, Aurora Christian shifted its game plan and opted to throw. The Eagles called 21 pass plays against just six run plays in the second half, and they found success.

Bray tossed two touchdown passes in the second half. Receiver Jacolby Maxwell, who finished with 166 yards on 12 receptions, caught a 3-yard touchdown pass, and Ryan Burke added 25-yard scoring grab.

Bray finished 22-for-41 for 334 yards.

“On tape, we saw right away that they play man, so it’s always 1-on-1,” Maxwell said. “I love that, because I just like the challenge of beating my guy.”

Newman’s pass defense was

exposed during the game, but Papoccia wasn’t worried about that being a factor moving deeper into the playoffs.

“I don’t think we will play anyone who can throw the ball like that again this season,” the Comets coach said.

“Our D-backs did a great job, the receivers didn’t have many yards after the catch. All you can do is be in position to make plays.”

On the defensive line, Newman senior end Jacob Barnes faced his toughest opponent of the season in Aurora Christian’s 6-foot-4, 270-pound lineman Brock Whalen.

Whalen, the Eagles’ left tackle, was the strength of the line, and was able to hold off Barnes from getting to Bray, but he quickly found out that Barnes could only be stopped for so long.

“It took some time to work him and finally get past him,” Barnes said.

Barnes, a Western Illinois recruit, recorded two sacks in the game, each going for 8-yard losses. His presence on the defensive line forced the Eagles to design runs away from him, and Bray often rolled out to his right to give himself more time to throw.

Fake it, make it Gieson launches pass during punt situation to seal win

DIXON – Matt Coffey looked back into the sun and saw a small, dark spot.

While he wasn’t 100 percent sure, he thought the spot was moving, and he better keep running.

The Dixon senior did just that midway through the fourth quarter Saturday at A.C. Bowers Field during the Dukes’ 5A playoff game against RichmondBurton.

Coffey reached out, and the spot turned into a football that turned into a touchdown that put a sizzle through the Dixon crowd and burned the Rockets’ hopes. The ensuing extra point put the Dukes up by what turned out to be the final score of 28-19.

“I just looked back and I saw the sun, and I thought I saw the ball,” Coffey said. “I knew there was a chance the ball would be thrown to me, so I made my move and went up the sideline.

By the time I looked back, the ball was in the air.”

The touchdown came on fourth down, and the Dukes had the ball at the 36-yard line.

“That’s the great thing about our punt formation, it gives me the option if the defense lines up a certain way to go for it,” Gieson said. “Matt had single coverage on the outside, and I saw him make the move. I just hoped that he’d be able to run under it.”

The play put the Dukes up nine points with 5 minutes, 33 seconds remaining in the game.

The two-possession lead was thanks to two key extra-point plays by the Dixon defense.

At the end of the second quarter, Richmond-Burton stole momentum with the legs of senior Marshall Woodward, who gashed the Dixon defense for runs of 28, 16, and 9 yards before scoring on a 6-yard run

with 1:54 left in the quarter.

On the ensuing extra point, Quinton Douglas came around the end and blocked Brandon Kilcoyne’s attempt to make the score 21-13.

“I thought Quinton and Cody Mighell had huge days on defense,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “Quinton’s block on the extra point might have been the biggest. It put them in the position of going for two later, and put them in more difficult positions in the second half.”

In the third quarter, Woodward broke free with a 55-yard run up the gut for a touchdown.

The Rockets went to the Woodward well again on the 2-point try, but he was bottled up to make it 21-19.

Woodward had 159 yards, all of which came on counters to the inside. The Rockets had started the game having success with sweeps with running backs Brad Boelkow and Luke

Brinkman. The latter scored on a 30-yard sweep on the first drive of the game. Once the Dukes stopped that, the Rockets went back to the inside.

“They’ve been doing that to teams all season,” Smith said.

“They can run the ball extremely well, and today it went from the sweeps to the counters. But, we were able to hit them with some big plays, and the important thing is that we didn’t beat ourselves.”

The Dukes seemed to take control in the second quarter with three TDs. The quarter opened with with a 19-yard slant from Gieson to Kyle LeBlanc.

Later in the quarter, the two connected on a 49-yard pass down the sideline that set up a 7-yard TD run by Gieson. The scoring wrapped up with LeBlanc breaking free on a wheel route for a 30-yard TD pass.

“All Kyle needs is a little space,” Gieson said. “If I can get it to him, he’s going to run like crazy to get every yard.”

The win is Dixon’s fourth playoff victory, and first since 2006.

The Dukes are 6-0 at A.C. Bowers this season. Dixon will play at Manteno (9-1) next Saturday.

Practice makes perfect Extra work on pass rush pays off for Golden Warriors in victory

BURLINGTON – All week, Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer had been working heavy on pass rush drills, especially against a Burlington Central team that was going to operate under a possible quarterback platoon.

With Rocket starting quarterback Adam Skirmont nursing a bum ankle suffered in Week 8 against Johnsburg, the Golden Warrior defense keyed in on Skirmont and fellow signal-caller Robert Doubek. Sterling took down the QB duo nine times for losses while its own quarterback, Sterling Thornton, guided his crew to success in a 31-20 win at Rocket Hill.

Together, the Golden Warrior defense pushed back Rocket backs for 81 yards on 10 tackles for loss, and forced and recovered four fumbles.

Senior defensive end Joe Brouilette played a part in four sacks, and recovered one fumble, while Jacob Heffelfinger recovered two for the Golden Warriors (7-3).

“It paid off today. It’s great to get those great plays for my team. These are the games we worked all summer for, and to see all that hard work pay off today was great.”

Heffelfinger’s fumble recoveries both came in the first quarter, sandwiched between a field goal by Tony Diaz with 8:11 left.

Neither team mustered much

on offense until Sterling built a scoring drive which lasted for most of the second quarter. Senior defensive end Brett Gould brought down Doubek with about 9 minutes left in the second quarter and punched the ball out, right into Brouilette’s hands. The ensuing drive lasted until the 1:20 mark, and ended with a 1-yard touchdown push by Thornton.

The lengthy drive was extended with key pushes twice on fourth-and-1, and once on third-and-1.

“Our defense does a great job of giving our offense a good chance,” Thornton said. “Those were pretty courageous calls on those fourth downs. We’re good enough to convert. Our offensive line blocks real good for us. It makes my job a whole lot easier.”

The Golden Warrior momentum was swept away at the halftime buzzer, as the Rockets put together quick-pass strikes with no timeouts remaining, capped by a 15-yard connection between Skirmont and Brenden Busky.

To swing the pendulum even more, the Rockets recovered Sterling’s fumble on the second-half kickoff. That run ended with a 1-yard push by Trevor Davison.

“It was the biggest boost we needed just going in on the last few seconds and getting that score,” Davison said. “We carried that over and wanted to keep that going, so we did.”

But Sterling would get the momentum back, as junior linebacker Kyle Beer recovered a fumble with 5:02 left in the third on a high snap.

The teams traded the lead until Brandon Dennis’ 12-yard score put the Warriors ahead 24-20. The Rockets’ next drive went nowhere, as Brouilette leveled Skirmont with a leaping sack on second down, and the Cover-2 denied a Rocket first down, as Dennis stopped Davison on a reception to force a turnover.

“They did a great job playing off the edge there,” Schlemmer said of his defense. “We were able to keep more guys in coverage, because we were getting those great rushes before. We talked all week about that the best pass defense is a great pass rush. They really did what they were supposed to do.”

Thornton capped the Golden Warriors’ next drive with his third score of the day, capping a busy day with 156 yards on 39 carries.

Wrong play, wrong time Series of mistakes cost Erie-Prophetstown in playoff loss

ST. JOSEPH – One disastrous stretch of plays put Erie-Prophetstown in a hole it was unable to dig out of.

The Panthers gave up a pair of touchdowns late in the first half, then allowed two more to begin the third quarter on their way to a 48-34 loss to St. Joseph-Ogden in a first-round Class 3A playoff game on Saturday.

Erie-Prophetstown (6-4) led 16-6 on the strength of a 4-yard run by junior quarterback Phillip Coers, and a 20-yard pass from Coers to Jordan Chandler with 4 minutes, 5 seconds left in the second quarter. For the next 8 minutes, however, it was all St. Joe-Ogden (9-1).

With 1:48 left in the second quarter, Spartans wide receiver Clayton Slifer hauled in a 57-yard TD pass from junior QB Eli Oltean to narrow the deficit to 16-13. The pass was a short one, but Slifer broke two

On the ensuing kickoff, EP’s Dvaree Thompson fielded the ball on his own 4 and slipped to the ground. The Panthers were unable to move the ball, the Spartans forced a punt and got the ball back on the EP 35.

Six plays later, SJO’s Cole Berry hauled in a 19-yard TD pass on fourth down, with just 7.7 seconds on the clock, to give the Spartans a 19-16 halftime lead.

“That was the key play of the game,” St. Joe-Ogden coach Dick Duval said. “It gave us a lot of

confidence going in to halftime.”

St.Joe-Ogden continued the onslaught in the second half. It marched 64 yards in eight plays on its first possession, with Ryan Allen finishing it off with a 7-yard run.

When EP’s Dylan Binion fumbled on his team’s next possession, the Spartans capitalized again. The capper came on an 8-yard TD pass from Oltean to Connor Janes, putting SJO ahead 34-16 with 4:19 left in the third period.

“We gave up the big plays in really crucial positions,” EP coach Chuck Milem said, “and

you just can’t do that against a quality opponent like that.”

Erie-Prophetstown scored on its next three possessions, but was never able to get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Binion finished with 25 carries for 178 yards in three quarters of action. He took a helmet to the back early in the fourth quarter and did not return. He was taken to a local hospital after the game to be checked out.

Chandler rushed five times for 83 yards, and also caught two passes for 46 yards. Coers rushed 15 times for 66 yards, as the EP offense put up 393 total yards.

“I’m proud of the way we performed today,” Coers said. “Our offense did a great job. I believe in our defense, but a couple of big plays they had led to a big momentum change.”

Binion, Chandler, and Coers are part of a strong junior class that will have the Panthers thinking big next season.

“We just need to pick up where we left off,” Coers said, “and we’ll have another exciting season.”

Duval was impressed with the Panthers’ attack.

“What they do and how they run their offense, I hope it gives everybody fits, because it gave us fits,” Duval said.

Oltean connected on 12 of 20 passes for 222 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Spartans. Allen (20-121) and Orion Ciota (10-80) led a ground attack that churned out 212 yards.

“We have a very balanced attack,” Oltean said. “It starts with the running game, and if the running game is working, then we can get the passing game going. We have a lot of ways we can hurt teams.”

St. Joe-Ogden will venture to Tolono Unity next week for a second-round contest. The Rockets (9-1) handed the Spartans their only loss, 35-7 in Week 8.
