Time on Spartans’ side Sterling suffers late loss to Sycamore at Roscoe Eades

STERLING – The Sterling football team ran out of time during a game that looked as if Sycamore didn’t realize it had timeouts.

The Golden Warriors had less than 30 seconds to answer a late Spartan touchdown, and couldn’t complete the comeback as Sterling lost 21-18 in a NIB-12 crossover game Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

“We just weren’t able to get off the field,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “That’s what it comes down to.”

Golden Warriors linebacker Keegan Kaye had what looked to be the play of the game late in the third quarter. Sycamore was leading 14-8 and was looking to add three more points on a 28-yard field goal try. That’s when Kaye came flying around the edge of the Spartans’ field goal unit, and blocked the try.

Sterling (7-2) then drove 80 yards, capped by a Latrell Vaughn 5-yard touchdown run to give Sterling a 15-14 lead. The Warriors forced a 3-and-out, and got the ball to the Sycamore 21, where kicker Tony Diaz boomed a

38-yard field goal to take an 18-14 lead.

But Sycamore (6-3) didn’t go away. The Spartans ran a deliberate offense, huddling after each play. Sycamore’s molasses tempo was at its finest when it ate up more than 8 minutes of clock on its first second-half possession, and that tempo didn’t change even when starting on its own 14, trailing, with about 7 minutes to play.

“A lot of people want to panic in situations like that,” said Spartans coach Joe Ryan, who chose not to use his three timeouts. “We had time.”

The Spartans drove 86 yards in 6 minutes, 44 seconds and scored when quarterback Brett Bemis connected with Trace Hefler for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Tough get going Tigers hand Dukes loss in battle for second place in BNC West

DIXON – This wasn’t exactly the way Dixon wanted to end the regular season.

Byron dominated both sides of the ball Friday night, gashing the Dukes’ defense with its trademark multifaceted running game, and smothering them on defense for much of the contest. The end result was a 43-13 dispatching of Dixon that left Dukes coach Dave Smith ready to throw this one in the trash can.

“I want a team that looks forward to these tough games, and I don’t know if we were there tonight. I take full responsibility for that. I didn’t have a good game tonight,” Smith said. “I guarantee next week will be better.”

The loss drops Dixon to 6-3 and ends the team’s hopes of hosting a first-round playoff game. The Dukes will now await tonight’s pairings telecast to find out where they are headed.

Dixon did snag an early 7-6 lead following a 78-yard touchdown sprint up the middle by running back Arthur

Cox. Cox would add another long TD late in the third quarter, on a 74-yard pass from Nate Gasciogne. But in between those two highlights was a forgettable stretch that saw Dixon amass just two first downs while being outscored 30-0. The Tigers, who earned their seventh win of the season and are hoping for a firstround home game, gained 180 rushing yards in the first half alone.

“We didn’t do the little things right. We let a really good Byron team take us out of our game plan,” Smith said.

“I’m disappointed in that. I think we’re better than that.

We didn’t run the right play, we dropped the ball. The snap wasn’t right; the read wasn’t right. Every play, it was something else.”

The Dukes’ effort came in stark contrast to Dixon’s regular season finale last year, also against Byron, when the team set a new school record for offensive yardage, and receiver Kyle LeBlanc racked up more than 300 yards receiving.

Friday, LeBlanc was held to 34 yards on six receptions.

Two ships sail away Steamers, Clippers end seasons in very different ways

FULTON – There won’t be a playoff sendoff for Fulton’s Jack Lemke. But the senior Steamer made the most of his final game wearing the red and black.

As a defensive back, Lemke made life frustrating for Amboy on Friday, with an interception and several touchdown-saving deflections. As a kicker and punter, he posted five extra points and continually pinned the Clippers in the shadow of their own goal line. He threw a 30-yard touchdown pass on offense as a wingback, and even on a fumbled kick attempt, Lemke scooped the ball himself and scored a 2-point conversion.

Whenever Lemke was touching the ball, the plays that weren’t supposed to go right did for Fulton, as the Steamers rolled Amboy 49-0.

For him, it was about getting that season-ending home victory and a little more.

“I really wanted to get that W tonight,” an emotional Lemke said afterward. “It’s a little bittersweet that we’re not in the playoffs, but I’m just happy we got the win. I’m going to miss this place. I love it here.”

To Lemke and the Steamers, it’s a bittersweet sendoff. Finishing at 4-5, they fell one win short of a playoff berth. It was a season dominated by key injuries and close losses. One example was how leading rusher Trey Simmons could only suit up for Fulton’s final knee to end the game, still nursing a broken collarbone.

Fulton coach Patrick Lower said the season

was “frustrating.” But that’s football.

“It’s a long journey,” he added. “There’s a lot of highs and a lot of lows. We probably had the toughest schedule since I started coaching. …

“There were the frustrations of are we ever going to catch a break. But any team that gets through 9 weeks completely healthy is completely lucky.”

On Friday, the coach was proud of his team’s performance in all phases. The defense shut Amboy out and held the Clippers to 109 total yards. Six players – Michael Pidde (twice), Austin Rash, Tyler Bruggenwirth, Cole McClary, Rodney Gossard and Tyler Paulline – all found their way into the end zone. When Paulline scored an 80-yard kickoff return to open the second half, the continuous clock went into effect, and Lower and the Steamers focused on savoring the last moments together.

It’s a more bitter end for the Clippers (2-7).

Fulton took a 35-0 lead into halftime, and by the season’s end, Amboy coach Gary Jones said his team was gassed.

Storm wins, now waits Brummel, BV step up to become playoff eligible with fifth win

MORRISON – When needing a win really counted, Tommy Brummel showed up.

Brummel, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior defensive end caused fits for the Bureau Valley Storm in the regular-season finale Friday against Morrison at E.M. “Bud” Cole Field.

With nine tackles – four of them sacks and another for a loss – Brummel came up big in the Storm’s 42-22 win over the Mustangs.

Brummel took down Mustangs quarterback Dylan Keller for a net 23 negative yards, leading a Storm defense that tallied 12 sacks and tackles in the backfield.

The Storm (5-4, 3-3 TRAC Rock) took advantage of Mustangs’ sweep plays and all but made their running game ineffective. On only two rushes did Morrison (3-6, 3-3) gain more than 10 yards.

“I was just doing as I was coached,” Brummel said, struggling to find words about the magnitude of his defensive statistics. “It just happened that way. I’m sure if someone else was there, they’d do the same thing.”

The Mustangs were in a hole right from the start after receiving the opening kick. Upon the catch, the ball was

fumbled and bounced about chest high to Hunter Schoff, who took it and ran back 9 yards for the opening score – 10 seconds into the game.

“Our offense did a real nice job,” Brummel said. “That first kickoff was incredible! Hunter Schoff just scooped and scored it. It was just great from the beginning.”

From there, senior running back Will Konneck and sophomore quarterback Drake Davis took to the ground and proceeded to run away from the Mustangs. Konneck broke several tackles during most of his 20 carries, and rushed for 178 yards.

While the Mustangs were able to shut down most of the Storm’s passing game, a plethora of Morrison penalties – nine flags for 110 yards – played a big role in advancing the Storm closer to a pair of second-half touchdowns from Konneck.

As for playoff aspirations, the Storm did not get much help from losses by Sherrard and St. Bede. They are in desperate need of playoff points to make what would eventually be a Class 2A field. However, they succeeded in getting their first winning season in 5 years.

“If we make it, we’re going to play our hearts out,” Konneck said. “If we don’t make it, we’re glad that us seniors got a winning season.”

“It would be one heck of a way to go out,” Brummel said.

Cards convert in clutch Fourth-down plays do in Oregon in season finale for both teams

OREGON – It was a pair of fourth downs, one converted and one not attempted, which had major implications in a comefrom-behind 22-19 win for Stillman Valley against Oregon in a BNC West finale Friday.

Leading 19-16 with 7 minutes left, the Hawks faced a fourth-and-3 at midfield. After converting earlier in the same drive on a fourth down, Oregon (3-6, 2-5) was lined up to go for it again, but an offsides penalty forced a punt instead.

Taking over at its own 20-yard line, Stillman Valley (4-5, 4-3) put together a 16-play scoring drive for the win, keyed by a fourth-and-7 conversion from its own 23-yard line by quarterback Ethan Roberts.

“Those two plays made the difference in the game,” Stillman Valley coach Mike Lalor said. “That penalty hurt them, and if we don’t make the fourth down, we don’t win the game.”

Roberts rolled out to pass, but could not find an open receiver and scrambled 8 yards to keep the drive alive.

“We lost contain and the quarterback made a nice play,” Oregon coach John Bothe said. “I was a little surprised they went for it.”

For Roberts, it was a redemption of sorts, as Brayton Finch stole a pitch in midair from him and raced 34 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 first-quarter Hawk lead.

“That was a great play by Brayton,” Bothe said. “It set the tone for us.”

Maverik Good nearly pulled the same trick shortly afterward, but was tackled at midfield after recovering another errant Roberts pitch. Seven plays later, John Ghibellini gave Oregon a 13-0 lead on a 10-yard run.

With 10 seconds left in the first half and no timeouts, SV’s Conner Lewin barely punched the ball over from the 1 to close the gap to 13-8.

The Hawks appeared to have control of the game midway through the third quarter, driving 80 yards in 15 plays for a 19-8 lead, with Finch capping things off with a 5-yard score.

But the Cardinals came right back to close to within 19-16 on a Lewin fourthdown touchdown run. Lewin also scored the winning touchdown, on a 4-yard run with 32 seconds left.

Having not completed a pass since the fourth week of the season, it was a futile effort for Oregon those final 32 seconds, with Noah Kutz intercepting Jerrick Orsted deep in Hawk territory after two incompletions.

“Intensity-wise, it was our best game,” Bothe said. “It was very physical, mentally and emotionally, like a playoff game.”

Since Bothe and Lalor became head coaches at their respective schools in 1998, it was the first year that at least one of the programs did not qualify for the playoffs.

Rude led the Newman ground game with 181 yards on 28 carries.

Mighty fine with No. 9 Tigers wrap up perfect 9-0 record; first in school history

PRINCETON — Phase 9 is now complete and the Princeton Tigers could not have done it any better.

The Tigers recorded their ninth straight win in a big way, defeating Sherrard 55-0 Friday at Bryant Field. The win wrapped up the Tigers’ first 9-0 campaign in school history on the way to their first playoff berth in 12 years.

“It feels amazing. When we got here, the program was dirt, but we just turned it all around. It feels absolutely amazing,” said senior Jack Bays, who was one of seven different Tigers to get in on the celebration with touchdowns Friday.

To get to this point, Bays said, “We did everything we could every single day, we believed in our coach and believed in our system.”

Bays struck twice, including a 70-yard punt return and an 8-yard reception from Jake Reinhardt, snagging a high pass near the sidelines.

“I ran over a flag and thought (the return) was coming back just like St. Bede. And the touchdown (pass) was sweet. Never caught a touchdown pass from my buddy Jake and now I finally did,” Bays said.

Senior Eric Bibula also scored his first touchdown of the season to cap the Tigers’ scoring late in the fourth quarter.

“Every week is about preparing for the next week. The kids did that tonight and

I’m really proud how they played. Our entire program played well tonight,” PHS coach Jesse Snyder said.

The Tiger defense shut Sherrard out with a total of 18 net yards of offense, all rushing. Sherrard had just two first downs.

The Tigers honored their coach by giving him the honors to break the opponents’ board as per team tradition he brought into the program from his playing days at Rockford College.

“That’s the first board I’ve ever able to break. That was fun. It was nice for the kids to do that,” he said.

“We all decided before the game no matter what, he deserves it. He’s the one who’s fought more than us I think,” Bays said.

Princeton, which dropped 21 straight games from 2012-14, last reached the IHSA playoffs in 2003. The Tigers also earned a first-round home date, which will be announced Saturday evening.

While he has speculated on potential opponents, Snyder is going to wait out to see how all the numbers and teams come out tomorrow.

• TIGER TALES: The Tigers will have a team get-together at 7 p.m. Saturday in the school cafeteria to watch the IHSA Playoffs Pairings Show. ... The PHS sophomores sent head coach Rob Jensen into a happy retirement with a 7-6 win.

A member of the 1989 state runner-up squad, Jensen has elected to hang up his whistle after 12 seasons.

Perfect, now playoffs Marcos rout Broncos to cap off 9-0 regular season

POLO – After one handoff, Polo senior running back Brooks Grobe was off to the races.

His teammates followed him on that path, and the Marcos capped off a dominating regular season in style.

Polo finished off its first undefeated regular season since 1991 with a 64-0 blanking of Orangeville on Friday night. The Marcos outscored eight NUIC Upstate opponents 443-35 this season, and 488-35 overall.

“We have high expectations,” senior lineman Ethan Cain said.

“We figured we’d win conference, and we wanted to do it handily. I think we’ve had an impressive performance so far.”

“I’m glad the regular season is over,” Grobe said. “We’re conference champs. We got past that goal, and now our next goal is to go deeper and deeper into the playoffs. We’ll see how strong we can be in the playoffs, and try to prove some people wrong around the state.”

On the first play of the game, Polo showed it was going to impose its will on the overmatched Broncos (1-8, 1-7 NUIC Upstate), who snapped a 23-game losing streak a week ago against River Ridge. Grobe went virtu-

ally untouched up the right sideline for a 58-yard TD run, and the scoring parade began.

“We wanted to come out strong,” Grobe said. “You can’t take any team weak, especially at this point when you’ve got the playoffs next week. You have to come mentally focused, as well as physically ready, and that first play really helped us get going.”

Grobe had five carries for 104 yards and two scores. Senior fullback Dylan Beers made the most of his two carries, as they went for touchdowns from 38 and 46 yards.

Brad Cavanaugh had a 25-yard TD run, and also scored on a 42-yard punt return. Wyatt Patterson added a 10-yard TD run. Reserves played the bulk of the minutes from late in the second quarter on.

Polo added two crowd-pleasing scores in the second half. Senior lineman Clint Merlak bulled his way in from 2 yards late in the third quarter, while Cain had a 50-yard scoop-andscore defensive touchdown after the Broncos fumbled.

“It was pretty sweet to get it on senior night, in front of the home crowd,” Cain said.

Orangeville managed only 25 yards of offense, all on the ground, against a rugged Polo defense. Nate Jordan led the Broncos with 15 yards on eight carries.

Rockets fall in Rockford Missiles, Raiders see playoff hopes dashed in NUIC losses

The Rock Falls Rockets scored in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14 points, but couldn’t muster any more offense Friday in a 63-6 loss to Lutheran in a Big Northern West contest in Rockford.

Luthern scored at least 13 points in each quarter, and tacked on 21 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Star running back James Robinson didn’t play, and the Rockets held three Crusaders runners to 145 yards on the ground.

Rock Falls finished 0-9 for the second consecutive season.

Warren 20, Milledgeville 15:

The Missiles’ playoff hopes were dashed at Floyd Daub Field, as a late interception set up the Warriors’ winning score with 5:27 to play.

Jake Sigafus returned the INT inside the Milledgeville 10-yard line, then Kyle Wolff ran it in two plays later to give Warren (6-3, 6-2 NUIC Upstate) a 20-15 lead.

The Missiles (4-5, 4-4) led 9-6 late in the third quarter, but Payton Calow hit Brian Marcure for a 52-yard TD

with 38 seconds left to put Warren ahead 14-9.

But after the Warriors recovered an onside kick, Milledgeville’s Kyle Kendall recovered a fumble on the very next play and ran it 45 yards for a score, giving the Missiles a 15-14 lead with 28 seconds left in the third.

After Wolff’s TD run, Warren ran out the clock with a pair of first downs after stopping Milledgeville’s fourthand-3 play near midfield with 3:18 remaining.

Stockton 54, AFC 6: The Raiders scored first, but it was all Blackhawks after that in an NUIC Upstate rout in Stockton.

Jacob Hilliker’s 33-yard TD run 1:35 into the game gave AFC (4-5, 4-4) a 6-0 lead, but it was short-lived. Stockton (7-2, 6-2) took an 8-6 lead 5 minutes later, then had four scoring runs of 11 yards or fewer over the second and third quarters. A 53-yard fumble return TD with 9:31 to play finished off the scoring.

Jake Hageman had 96 yards on 19 rushes for the Raiders, who missed out on a possible at-large playoff berth with the loss.

Hayden Hayes (12-80) and Dillon Hatfield (12-69) led the Blackhawks’ ground attack, and Hayden Fox ran for 30 yards and threw for 110 more, including a 44-yard scoring strike for Stockton’s first TD.

Lena-Winslow 47, West Carroll 28: The Panthers

amassed 348 of their 394 yards on the ground, and held the Thunder to just six points for the game’s first 33 minutes in an NUIC Northwest win in Savanna.

Kody Plattenberger ran for a first-half touchdown and threw for a second-half score, but also threw a pair of interceptions for West Carroll (5-4, 4-4). Steven Santeramo and Logan Barker added long TD runs in the final 8 minutes.

Le-Win (9-0, 8-0) reeled off 20 first-quarter points, then closed the half with another TD run in the final minute of the first half before scoring twice in the first 7 minutes of the third period.
