’Stangs start late fire Morrison recovers from 18-point deficit to upend Amboy-LaMoille

AMBOY – The Amboy-LaMoille Clippers came out fired up from the opening kickoff. The Morrison Mustangs came out fired up from the halftime locker room.

It was the Mustangs whose fired burned brightest.

Morrison rallied from a 26-8 halftime deficit Friday night at The Harbor, scoring four second-half touchdowns en route to a 40-33 victory over Amboy.

“We just played with passion in the second half,” Morrison senior running back Will Bird said. “We came out flat at the start – we seem to do that a lot – but our lines definitely stepped up in the second half. The offensive line opened holes, and the defensive line filled them in. We’re definitely happy with the win.”

The Mustangs (3-5, 3-2 Three Rivers Rock) amassed 248 of their 355 yards after the break, including 286 on the ground. After fumbling on its opening possession of the second half, Morrison scored on four consecutive possessions, all while forcing three straight Amboy punts and picking off a pass.

Bird scored two of those TDs, including the clincher from 8 yards out with 1:45 to play, and finished the night with 112 yards on 20 carries. Senior Tate Renkes added a TD in each half, and ran for 106 yards on 10 rushes,

including a 51-yard scoring scamper that accounted for almost half of the Mustangs’ first-half yards.

“It felt like we started to get down on ourselves in the first half,” Renkes said, “then we just picked each other up at halftime.

We got a lot of momentum going, we got excited, and we just kept going.”

Amboy (2-6, 1-4) went the other way.

The Clippers scored on four of their five first-half possessions, and picked off a pair of Morrison passes to set up scores.

Senior running back Ryon Richardson had 150 of his game-high 164 rushing yards before the break, and he also caught three passes for 88 yards and a TD. Dallas Appleman added 88 yards rushing and a score before halftime, and junior quarterback Jordan Hochstatter ran for a pair of TDs – Amboy’s first and last of the game.

“I think we had a lot of guys who thought the game was pretty much over at halftime,” Richardson said, “and we came out lacking a little bit in the second half. We were fired up at the start, but they were more fired up after halftime, and it sucks that it happened on our Senior Night.”

After Amboy’s third punt of the second half, Morrison QB Dylan Keller (69 passing yards) hooked up with Joey Brackemyer on a 57-yard scoring strike – one play after a long pass play was called back due to penalty – to put the Mustangs up 32-26 with 5:45 to go.

A trick garners treat Dukes’ fake punt turns tide as Dixon clinches playoff spot

ROCK FALLS – One very special special teams play was all Dixon needed to snuff out a Rock Falls uprising.

The Dukes, paced by the pitchand-catch combination of seniors Nate Gascoigne to Kyle LeBlanc, cemented their second consecutive playoff berth with a 47-14 victory against the Rockets on Friday night at Hinders Field.

Regardless of what the Dukes (6-2, 4-2 Big Northern West) do next week against Byron, they will be making postseason plans a week from Saturday.

“It’s pretty crazy,” Gascoigne said.

“This is the best time of the year to be playing good football, and we just need to keep it going.”

It wasn’t easy, as Rock Falls (0-8, 0-6) put up a fight. Dixon, up 27-7 at halftime, fumbled on its opening possession of the third quarter, and the Rockets turned that into a 13-yard Braeden Westfall touchdown run to draw within 27-14 with 8 minutes, 10 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Dukes then went nowhere on their next possession, and dropped back into punt formation. The punt-

er was Gascoigne, who threw a short pass to LeBlanc, who had drifted just past the line of scrimmage. LeBlanc turned it into a 31-yard gain, and later scored on a 10-yard pass, again on fourth down, from Gascoigne.

“It was huge,” Gascoigne said of the fake punt. “If we didn’t complete that, Rock Falls could have got the momentum, and we didn’t want that to happen.”

Gascoigne threw for 199 yards, including scoring passes of 30 yards to Arthur Cox, 21 yards to Kandras Martin, and 10 yards to LeBlanc.

Cox had a big night on the ground, with 18 carries for 109 yards, including TD runs of 4, 10 and 12 yards.

Dixon also received a TD from offensive lineman Diante Sanders, who picked up a fumble near the goal line and scored from a yard out.

It was the second touchdown this season for Sanders, who had a picksix against Winnebago in Week 6.

“I was just in the right spot at the right time,” Sanders said. “Once I picked it up, I had a bunch of guys there to push me in. Nothing was going to keep me out of there.”

Leading the way for Rock Falls was Westfall, who had 19 carries for 90 yards. Logan Pillars also threw for 108 yards, including a 2-yard TD pass to Michael Berentes on a play where Pillars was almost sacked.

Hawks win in long run Oregon uses big plays to get past Mendota in BNC West game

OREGON – In a 27-20 win Friday over Mendota, Oregon overcame three lost fumbles and an offense that had difficulty sustaining long drives.

Instead, the Hawks relied on four long touchdown runs, three

by Caleb Mennen and a 45-yard game-clincher by John Ghibellini late in the fourth quarter.

“It wasn’t our best effort,” Oregon coach John Bothe said. “We were flat and got caught off guard on a couple of plays. Our defense remained calm, though.”

Oregon had a 14-0 lead and appeared to be in control, but a 69-yard halfback option touchdown pass with 1 minute left in the first half pulled the Trojans within 14-7.

Then Mendota (1-7, 1-5) recovered an onside kick to start the second half. Eight plays later it was 14-14 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jake Temple and Oregon (3-5, 2-4) had a fight on its hands.

“Once we got up 14-0, we kind of hung back and they took advantage,” said Mennen, who had 144 yards on only six carries.

The speedy junior got the lead back for the Hawks with a 38-yard burst up the right side of his line

four plays later.

“That was a really nice cut he made on the run,” Bothe said. “Mendota committed so many at line of scrimmage, as many as 10 guys, which helped us break the long runs.”

On the first play of the fourth quarter, talented sophomore quarterback Bryson Prustator tied the score 20-20 on a sneak for Mendota. That touchdown was set up when the Hawks fumbled on their own 27-yard line.

Other than the touchdown runs, the other key offensive play for Oregon came from Brayton Finch.

Deep in their own territory late in the game, the Hawks faced a thirdand-9. Finch broke two tackles to keep the drive alive. Five plays later, it was Ghibellini putting the game out of reach with his touchdown.

“After a tough loss at Winnebago, we focused on finishing strong,” said Hawk 3-year lineman Matt Crandall, who had four solo tackles and nine assists. “We had some big stops in the fourth quarter.”

The final stop drove Mendota coach Brock Sondgeroth berserk.

With 2 minutes left and his team driving, Hawks defensive back Will Rice intercepted Prusator.

Right place, right time Warriors on target in shutout win over Rochelle to clinch title

ROCHELLE – Need some lucky numbers? Try asking Sterling’s defense.

The Golden Warriors became even better at predetermining outcomes, picking the right spots on defense to stall the Rochelle Hubs in a 35-0 win Friday at Creason Athletic Complex.

Winning the Northern Illinois Big 12’s West Division with the victory, the Golden Warrior linebackers zeroed in on the correct players, allowing just 81 yards – with 68 coming on the ground on 42 carries.

Only twice did Sterling (7-1, 4-0) allow plays of more than 10 yards.

“We challenged them, telling them all week that we played really good last week,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said. “But if we want to be a championship-caliber team and beat teams like Rochelle, then we were going to have to come to play tonight. And our kids showed up.”

Sterling’s defense stopped

seven runs for no gain, and made three tackles for loss.

On third-down opportunities, the Golden Warriors stopped the Hubs 11 times out of 12.

“Our defense played as a team very well,” senior linebacker Kyle Beer said. “We’ve done it the past few weeks, but I think we finally figured it out. We can fly around and get to the ball, and get it done.”

The Golden Warriors got out to a 21-0 halftime lead with touchdown runs from Andrew Spaulding of 1 and 48 yards, and the first of three touchdown passes from Sterling Thornton. Jordan Asbury was the target for the first TD catch, from 27 yards out. Turner Morse hauled in scoring receptions of 8 and 62 yards for the second-half scores.

Morse’s almost didn’t make the first TD catch, juggling the ball along the far sideline for the last couple of yards before crossing in.

“I wasn’t really focused,” Morse said. “I took my eye off the ball to look at the end zone. I shouldn’t have been doing that, but I reeled it in and got another 6 points.”

Wide left, deep breath Missed FG preserves Comets’ rally past Hall in Spring Valley

SPRING VALLEY – Fourth down, the 6-yard line, left hash, 3.7 seconds left – the fate of a 22-21 football game rested on the foot of Hall senior kicker Matt Krolak and the Red Devils special teams Friday.

“It really turns your stomach upside down,” said Logan Whitman, Newman senior running back, who could only watch helplessly from the sidelines. “It really shows you what you’ve got for heart.”

Only when Krolak’s kick sailed wide left could the No. 6-ranked Comets breathe easy again. In one quarter, they overcame a 13-point deficit to beat Hall and move to 7-1 (4-1 TRAC Mississippi).

And for Hall, the feeling was deflating.

“Our kids played their butts off, their kids played their butts off,” coach Randy Tieman said. “We deserved to win that game.

They deserved to win that game. We made a couple of crucial errors that cost us.”

The Red Devils (6-2, 3-2 TRAC Mississippi) kept the Comets quiet for most of the game. For the first 23 minutes, Hall held Newman runners to 2.7 yards per carry, and after scoring twice in the third, the Red Devils entered the final quarter with a 21-8 lead.

The only player Hall seemingly couldn’t stop was Comets quarterback Landen Vesley. With a minute to go until

halftime, the quarterback found a lane and broke up the middle past the Hall secondary for a 75-yard touchdown run, giving Newman an 8-7 lead.

But after Vesley’s second touchdown – a 33-yard sweep in which he dragged defenders – Whitman (Vesley’s backup) said he got the call.

“Landon couldn’t go,” Whitman said.

With 7 minutes left in the game, trailing 21-14, Newman took over from the Devils’ 49-yard line. With Whitman behind center, the Comets churned out an 11-play drive that ate almost 6 minutes of game clock. It ended with a Brady Rude 5-yard touchdown run, but rather than tie the score at 21-21, coach Mike Pappoccia opted to go for 2.

On the 2-point try, Whitman faked right on a handoff to Rude.

With most Hall defenders biting, tight end John Wilson slipped open and Whitman floated him the ball for what would be the game-winning play.

“Great fakes all around,” Whitman said. “John ran a wonderful route, and they didn’t see it coming.”

Even so, Hall had 1:13 of clock and 3 timeouts. The Red Devils took over at their own 49. Quarterback Drew Pullam connected with Christian Smith for a 22-yard catchand-run and the Red Devils were at the Newman 13 with 26 seconds remaining.

The Comets’ secondary forced 3 consecutive incompletions (with a pass interference moving the Red Devils closer).

The Elite Eight Princeton clinches Three Rivers Mississippi championship

PRINCETON — The Princeton Tigers have taken a step by step approach to the 2015 football season.

That week by week philosophy has netted the Tigers their eight straight victory to start the season, defeating Erie/Prophetstown 39-22 Friday at Bryant Field.

That plan has now netted the Tigers the Three Rivers Mississippi Conference championship. Now 5-0 in the Mississippi, the Tiger have claimed the league title, owning the head-to-head tiebreaker over Newman (4-1).

“That (conference championship) was the goal at the beginning of the season. We set out game by game to accomplish it,” PHS senior running back Jacob Smith said. “All starts in the offseason. Each week in practice we strive for each game. It’s just a completion of a goal.”

The Mississippi crown would be just the third conference championship in school history. PHS won conference titles in 1984 and 1986 in the now defunct NCIC. PHS quarterback Jake Reinhardt said the win was key for a couple of reasons.

“Obviously, we’re making school history again going 8-0 and maybe knocking them out of the playoffs gives us a better chance to get into 3A,” he said of the Tigers’ playoff scenario.

The Tigers rode the workhorse run-

ning Friday of Smith, who gained 153 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries, and the near perfect passing of Reinhardt (13-14, 125 yards, 2 TDs).

Senior Jett Wedekind hauled in a 31-yard TD pass as the Tigers stretched out a 19-8 lead early in the third quarter. He added a 33-yard TD romp when he tip-toed down the sidelines to take it 31-14 early in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers closed within 13-8 with 2:02 left in the first half on a 13-yard run by Dylan Binion and conversion run by Phillip Coers. They converted a key fourth and one play from their own 32, a decision E/P coach Chuck Milem said was more of lacking confidence in the Panthers’ punting game more than anything.

E/P also got a 32-yard TD by Jack Bauer in the final minute of the third quarter and a 22-yard score by Seth Cameron late in the fourth.

Storm stays alive Bounce-back win over Riverdale keeps BV in playoff hunt

MANLIUS – After a disappointing loss to Fulton last week, the Bureau Valley Storm wanted to get back in the win column and keep their playoff hopes alive.

On Friday night, the Storm bounced back in a big way, scoring early and often and defeating the Riverdale Rams 55-0 on Senior Night in Manlius.

“We did a nice job of executing tonight,” Storm coach Spencer Davis said. “It doesn’t matter who you play you have to execute a game plan. I challenged our kids this week because I didn’t think we played very well last week. We didn’t execute and had a lot of penalties. We came out tonight and we executed well. I was proud of the way all the kids played.”

The Storm (4-4, 2-3) scored on five of their six possessions in the first half to take a 33-0 lead into the break. Senior running back Will Konneck led the offense with 127 yards rushing and two touchdowns on eight carries, all in the first half.

“Everyone played their butts off tonight,” Konneck said. “We all worked hard and were in the game.

We came to play today.”

Drake Davis tossed a pair of

touchdown passes in the first half to Bryan Herr. The first was a 45-yard bomb and the second came on a 2-yard fade with 15 seconds remaining in the half. Davis finished 93 yards passing and 111 yards rushing.

The Storm defense had a big night as well, limiting Riverdale (0-8, 0-4) to just 125 yards of total offense and also scoring twice on turnovers. Caje Peterson recovered a fumble forced out by Calen Buysse and returned it 30 yards for a first quarter touchdown. Hunter Schoff had two interceptions in the game, returning one for a 10-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Seniors Shawn Christianson and Thomas Brummel tied for the team lead in tackles with 12 each.

“Shawn Christensen played a wale of a game,” Coach Davis said.

“The last three or four weeks Caje Peterson has been all over the place. I’m happy that the defense came out tonight and played with some enthusiasm.”

Herr added a 39-yard field goal in the third quarter to enforce the running clock.

• Bureau Valley’s 2005 state championship team was recognized Friday for its 10th-year anniversary.

The 2005 Storm squad beat Tolono Unity 34-7 for the state title.

Orion derails St. Bede Bruins faces must-win next week vs. Newman to make playoffs

ORION — On the chilliest night of the season, the St. Bede Bruins started off cold and miscues snowballed resulting in a 47-20 thumping by the Orion Chargers Friday night in Orion.

“The wheels came off and it just snowballed,” SBA coach Jim Eustice said.

Orion took advantage of early SBA miscues as they had committed two turnovers and had a blocked punt all in the first quarter that resulted in 20 points for the Chargers.

“They punched us in the mouth and boy we just didn’t respond.

Physically they just beat us,” Eustice said. “They physically beat us the whole first half and I’m stunned. I’m stunned that we didn’t respond and that’s got to be on my staff and I. All year long we punched back and we didn’t punch back.”

The physicality that the Chargers brought was more than the Bruins could handle as Orion used the early SBA miscues to build a 34-0 lead on an 18-yard strike from junior quarterback Craig Matson to Koby Stropes with 3:20 to play in the first half.

“It seemed like they wanted it

more than us tonight and I’m surprised. I didn’t expect this tonight,” Eustice said.

Senior Baylee Hopps finally stopped the bleeding 1:34 later as he barreled his way through the Orion defense for a eight-yard score to cut the Chargers’ lead to 34-6.

Hopps added another scamper this one of 75 yards while quarterback Bryant Eustice and junior receiver Josh Sapp connected for 25 yards in the second half but the Bruins were too far down to make a comeback and fell short 47-20.

With the loss the Bruins hold their playoff future in their own hands as they will have procured enough playoff points to get into the postseason if they can muster a victory over the Newman Central Catholic Comets (7-1, 4-1).

Marcos reveal secret Blocking leading to bevy of big plays for undefeated Marcos

FRANKLIN GROVE – It seems no matter which player is carrying the ball for the Polo Marcos, he will invariably gain several yards en route to another touchdown in another lopsided victory.

So what’s the secret for this level of dominance?

“We make holes, and they get through,” senior two-way lineman Noah Prerost said following his team’s 52-14 victory at Ashton-Franklin Center on Friday.

“We work hard in practice, we work hard against each other, and that’s how we get better.”

Certainly, it can’t just be that simple for Polo, the top-ranked team in the Associated Press Class 1A poll leading into this week’s action.

But as they’ve done throughout the season, the Marcos did make it look pretty easy on Friday, scoring touchdowns on every one of their meaningful possessions.

AFC executed a solid game plan early, and scored on its opening drive on a 13-yard run by junior Kaywan Palmer to pull within 8-6.

But the Raiders’ defense simply had no solution for the masterful Polo offense, which was orchestrated by the now fully-healed

quarterback Brody Grobe. The senior finished with 114 rushing yards and 65 passing yards, all in the first half.

First-half highlights for Polo included a 50-yard touchdown run by Brad Cavanaugh and a 25-yard TD pass from Grobe to Richie Bartnick.

AFC nearly matched the Marcos by threatening to score again early in the second quarter, but a fumble deep in Polo territory stymied the momentum. The Marcos capitalized with a 10-play, 90-yard drive capped by Bartnick’s touchdown reception to stretch their lead to 24-6. Whatever energy was left on AFC’s sideline seemed to disappear with that turn of events.

Polo then poured it on in its typical dominant style, scoring touchdowns on its first seven possessions to enact the running clock in the final minute of the third quarter. The Marcos then advanced to the AFC 1-yard line on their only fourth-quarter possession before running out the clock with a delay of game penalty.

Rocky finish for Steamers Rockridge pulls away for win in Fulton; Wildcatz fall at Forreston

Fulton quarterback Tyler Sweenie passed for two touchdowns in the first quarter, but the Steamers couldn’t hang on against Rockridge in a 48-28 Three Rivers Rock home loss.

Fulton led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter after Sweenie’s touchdown passes to Jack Lemke and Devon Ballard. Rockridge scored the next 24 points, before Steamers running back Michael Pidde scored on a 2-yard run.

Two more Rockridge scores pushed the game out of reach, despite Rodney Gossard’s 7-yard scoring run for Fulton late in the fourth quarter.

The Steamers (3-5, 3-2 TRAC Rock) were eliminated from playoff contention with their fifth loss, while Rockridge improved to 5-3, 5-1.

Forreston 22, EastlandPearl City 6: The Wildcatz

were tied at 6 with the NUIC Northwest rival Cardinals at halftime, but Forreston pulled away for a win in Forreston.

EPC (1-7, 1-6 NUIC Northwest) was led by Keegan Schubert, who rushed for 122 yards on 22 carries.

EPC scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter on a 16-yard pass from D.J. Heeren to Jarod Kempel.

Forreston (6-2, 5-2) had three rushers with at least 97 yards.

Dakota 42, Milledgeville 13:

The Missiles couldn’t keep up in an NUIC crossover home loss.

Milledgeville (4-4, 4-3 NUIC Upstate) has now lost three straight games after starting the season 4-1. The Missiles need a win next week at home against Warren to become playoff eligible.

Dakota (7-1) had already clinched its playoff berth.

Galena 49, West Carroll 28:

The Thunder couldn’t topple 1A’s 10th-ranked team in a road NUIC Northwest loss.

West Carroll (5-3, 5-3 NUIC Northwest) was paced by Ethan Mangler, who rushed nine times for 99 yards, including TD runs of of 5 and 73 yards. Kody Plattenberger completed 11 of 22 passes for 186 yards, including a 56-yard TD pass to Kaleb Plattenberger.
