TERLING – If this old sportswriter has a heart attack while covering a high school football game, I hope it’s at a Newman game.

At every Comets football game, home and away, there is a team of doctors on the sideline to handle virtually every emergency. It’s been that way for decades, dating back to when a group of orthopedic surgeons from CGH in Sterling volunteered their services.

The current medical staff is headed by Dr. Joe Welty, a family practitioner at KSB in Dixon for 30 years. Welty came on board 16 years ago, when his son, Anthony, was a freshman at Newman.

“As I recall, my son Anthony came home from practice one night and said, ‘Dad, Coach [Mike] Papoccia said to tell you great seats, lousy pay,’” Welty said. “I told him I knew exactly what he wanted me to do, and I’ve been coming down to the sideline ever since.”

Picking, not grinning Interceptions hurt Rockets in BNC West loss to Trojans

ROCK FALLS – Turnovers cost more than just a possession, at least in most cases. It also means a change in momentum, and can lead to a snowball effect on the scoreboard.

The Rock Falls Rockets found that out firsthand Friday night at Hinders Field, as the Mendota Trojans turned six interceptions and a fumble recovery into 27 points in a 47-8 victory to spoil Rock Falls’ homecoming.

“You can’t give a good team extra possessions and great field position,” Rock Falls interim head coach Jay Mammosser said. “We got a little rattled, tried do things too quickly, and their speed really got to us.”

Rock Falls starting quarterback Noah Junis was under pressure all night, and even when the pocket was fairly clean, he was a bit antsy. He was replaced by senior Jacob Mammosser after he was picked off for the fifth time in the first half.

Joseph LaShonse had three INTs, and James Carroll two; his second pick came in the end zone as time expired in the second quarter, and he was tackled near midfield after a 47-yard return.

In all, the Trojans amassed 191 return yards on the six interceptions, which was 40 more than the Rock Falls offense had in the first 24 minutes.

“It’s huge when the defense can

set the tone like that, and give us the ball in great position,” Carroll said. “Plus, we really get pumped up on offense when our defense makes plays. We had all the momentum tonight.”

Mendota scored on its first possession, then had to punt after that first interception.

But the second was a pick-6, and two of the next three INTs also led to TDs; the other was a blocked field goal by Mam-

mosser.

Leading 28-0 at halftime, the Trojans got their ground game going after the break. Mendota didn’t throw a pass in the second half, as Wyatt Martinson ran for his second and third scores of the game on the Trojans’ first two possessions. The second score, which came one play after a Rock Falls fumble, gave Mendota a 40-0 lead and started the running clock.

Trailing 47-0 to start the fourth quarter, Rock Falls (0-7, 0-5) put together a nine-play drive that covered 77 yards, the final 45 on a scoring strike from Mammosser to Connor Cain on a fourth-and-10. The play was a pretty back-shoulder pass to Cain on a go route down the Rock Falls sideline, and he shook the defender after catching the ball and outran the rest of the Mendota secondary.

“Sometimes things just don’t go your way, and you’ve got to adjust to keep going,” Cain said.

“Mendota played great, and we just have to shake those interceptions off. The back-shoulder [throw] was there all night, and we kept going to it until we scored on it.”

Cain finished with five catches for 96 yards, while Mammosser threw for 141 yards, ran for 12 yards, and caught three passes from Junis for 20 yards.

Rock Falls (0-7, 0-5) had 254 total yards, 212 of it coming through the air, and had just one fewer first down than Mendota (15-14). The Trojans compiled 285 total yards, with 261 of it coming on the ground, and committed two more penalties (8-6) for 20 more yards (60-40) than the Rockets.

Bite bad as bark Aquin’s offense proves to be as good as advertised

MILLEDGEVILLE – There were many reasons why Milledgeville simply didn’t want to lose Friday night’s game against Aquin.

But with their playoff life on the line in their homecoming game, the Missiles couldn’t stop the loss from coming.

Or, more specifically, Milledgeville couldn’t stop the potent Aquin offense, which did pretty much whatever it wanted to in a 55-14 victory.

“We played hard the whole time,” said senior Milledgeville quarterback Jordan Harris. “It’s tough because our chance at playoffs is gone, but we just have to play hard and win out for next year.”

The Missiles (2-5, 2-4 Northwest Upsate Illini Upstate) entered the game with a record of 2-4, but with a couple of winnable games against East Dubuque and Ashton-Franklin Center to close out the season, a repeat of last season’s victory over the Bulldogs (6-1, 6-1) would’ve put them in good position for a playoff berth in the Class 1A field.

But it was clear early on that the Bulldogs’ offense was on a different level, as Aquin sand-

touchdown that gave his team some hope. But a flurry of scores by the Bulldogs in the second quarter put the game out of reach. Aquin quarterback

threw five TD passes on 15-of21 passing, and running back James Gustafson had four total touchdowns.

In total, the Bulldogs scored touchdowns on each of their first eight drives. Things were particularly bad early due in part to turnovers; Aquin ran 24 plays in the first quarter while the Missiles ran just five.

Now, Milledgeville will look to close out the season on a strong note, knowing that the dream of a playoff berth is over. For a team that dresses more sophomores on varsity than juniors or seniors, coach Jason Wroble hopes his team can use this game as a learning experience.

“We have a lot of young guys on our team,” he said. “When you play a good football team, you want to emulate them. You have to do the little things right, and hopefully our guys saw that and it will pay dividends in the future.

“It’s disappointing that this knocks us out of the playoffs, because that’s been our goal for a couple of years,” he added.

“Hopefully, we can build on this, and it will give us something to focus on during our offseason preparations.”

Time runs out Maple Leafs chew up yards, clock in NIB-12 West showdown

GENESEO – Sterling’s top cornerback Logan Cheshire replayed the play in his mind, but there was nothing he could do.

Geneseo was driving, looking to salt away the clock late in the fourth quarter, when the Maple Leafs committed a penalty that forced Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer into a tough decision.

On a third-and-5 play from the Warriors’ 31, the Leafs were called for an illegal formation that would have pushed them back to the 36, but Schlemmer opted to decline, forcing a fourth-and-2.

“We thought that was the right call,” Schlemmer said of the decision to decline the penalty.

“If we accept it, they could have taken another 50 seconds or so off the clock on third down. We just couldn’t afford that.”

The Leafs used that opportunity to abandon the run and call a rare pass play to 6-foot7 receiver Drew Himmelman.

That’s how it went for Sterling, which was working against the clock all game as the Leafs’ dominating rushing attack ate up chunks of yards, and time, in a 30-20 win at Bob Reade Field in a NIB-12 West game.

The Leafs’ (7-0, 3-0 NIB-12 West) rushing attack featured tough runners that plowed into traffic, gaining a handful of yards and taking valuable time off the clock on each touch.

The tough running and slow play forced Sterling to work fast on offense against a defense that had only allowed 22 points through the first 6 weeks of the season. Each empty drive rang louder and louder.

“We worked all week on running the offense with little time,” Warriors quarterback Sterling Thornton said. “We prepared like we would have the ball last. That’s a good team, but I should have done more, though. I feel like this is on me.”

Thornton rushed for 130 yards and three touchdown in the loss, but felt bad about his inaccuracy late in the game. Thornton finished 6 of 16 passing for 124 yards, but didn’t complete his final five throws.

“They’re a good football team,” Schlemmer said. “We just have to be better and eliminate mistakes. We had a great first drive, but we made some knucklehead mistakes.”

STERLING – Once Newman’s special teams turned special, a close game against ErieProphetstown turned into a runaway.

The Comets’ Nolan McGinn returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, sparking a scoring explosion as Newman rolled to a 46-15 victory against the Panthers on Friday night in a key Three Rivers North contest.

Newman (7-0, 5-0) led 8-0 at halftime, but scored 32 points in the first 8 minutes, 5 seconds of the third quarter. The catalyst was an 85-yard return

by McGinn, who went virtually untouched up Sterling Chevrolet Field, covering the distance in 14 seconds.

“It was really great blocking, and I had a clear path in front of me,” McGinn said. “We ran a middle return, which we practice a lot, but we don’t really run it much in games. I think it really paid off.”

The Comets also scored on their first offensive possession of the third quarter, on a 3-yard run by Dillan Heffelfinger.

EP’s Dylan Binion, the area’s leading rusher entering the game with 134 carries for 1,150 yards, was held to 31 yards on 15 carries. He did score the only offensive TD for the Panthers (4-3, 3-2).

“To be honest with you, I didn’t think we could take [Binion] away,” Newman coach Mike Papoccia said. “He hits the hole so hard, and they block that veer so well. The kids thought they could [stop him], and that’s the important part.”

EP’s Jordan Chandler capped off the scoring with an 85-yard kickoff return for a score with 6:12 to play.

Junior quarterback Phillip Coers paced the Panther attack with eight carries for 104 yards.

He had a 47-yard run in the first half, and a 41-yarder in the second half.

Newman led just 8-0 at halftime, on a 24-yard TD run by Rude with 8:21 to go in the second quarter.

An interception by the Panthers’ Dvaree Thompson, in which he out-jumped the Comets’ Shayne Allen in the end zone, prevented further damage with 2:35 to go until halftime.

Two Rude plays Oregon senior steps up twice in fourth quarter

OREGON – Oregon desperately needed a big play Friday in the second half of its Big Northern West game against Winnebago.

Not content with just one, Garrett Rude made the two of the biggest plays of the night in Oregon’s 26-20 come-frombehind win.

With 7½ minutes left in the game, it was Rude getting past the initial line of scrimmage and out-racing the secondary for a 71-yard touchdown to tie the score at 20.

“That was the spark we needed,” Oregon coach John Bothe said.

Then, with the Hawks holding a 26-20 lead, Rude came up from his safety position to tackle scrambling quarterback Jess Smith at the 5-yard line on the game’s final play.

“I had [receivers] in my zone, but I could tell he was going to take it,” Rude said. “I said, ‘Screw it,’ and went after him. I had a line on him, and was able to put my head on him.”

Rude had plenty of help from teammates, including a second-half gang-tackle that

kept Winnebago out of the end zone on fourth down from 2 yards out. At the time, the Indians led 20-14, and Oregon was having trouble moving the ball.

“I thought we were cooked,” Bothe said. “Before we made the stop, we had a down look on our faces. That was a fantastic play.”

“We didn’t get the job done when we had a chance to put the game away,” Winnebago coach Mark Helm said.

After Rude’s score, the Hawk defense rose up again and forced the Indians to punt. Taking over on its own 10-yard line with 5 minutes left, Oregon’s John Ghibellini ran the exact same belly play Rude scored his touchdown on and went for 68 yards.

“I saw him break loose and don’t know what happened,” Helm said. “I’ll have to watch the film, but somebody missed their coverage.”

Winnebago put Oregon into a third-and-long situation, but Brayton Finch ran 11 yards on the sweep for a key first down.

Three plays later, he crashed over from 2 yards out for the clinching score.

“As a team, we showed a lot of character to come back like that,” Bothe said.

Coming in as mirror images of each other in regard to records, points scored, and playoff points, both teams had nearly identical scoring drives to start the game.

Rude capped off a 58-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown.

The Indians closed to within 7-6 on a 55-yard drive.

On the first play of the second quarter, Hawk quarterback Jerrick Orsted threw a perfect pass into coverage to tight end Josh Cook for a 21-yard score, upping the lead to 14-6.

Defensive lineman Frank Lung forced a fumble and prevented a first-half touchdown with a crashing tackle of Smith, but Oregon turned the ball right back on a fumble of its own.

Winnebago, which started three sophomores in its backfield, got touchdowns from two of those players, Smith and Austin Leitzinger, to take a 20-14 halftime lead.

In a final statement on how close the two teams were to each other, total net yardage was 304 for Oregon and 303 for Winnebago.

Dukes seal fifth win by stopping conversion

The Bureau Valley Storm kept their playoff hopes alive in a big way Friday night, scoring early and often in a 46-12 Three Rivers North victory in Amboy.

The Clippers (5-2, 3-1), who were ranked 10th in the AP Class 2A poll, were outrushed 304-150, and outpassed 151-22 as the Storm (3-4, 2-2) amassed 455 yards of total offense while holding Amboy to 172.

Tommy Johnston ran for 100 yards and two scores, and also had a 28-yard TD catch for BV. Parker Neuhalfen added 64 rushing yards, 72 receiving yards, and a touchdown reception, and Drake Davis finished with 43 rushing yards and 121 passing yards. Will Konneck (65 yards) and Josh Mead (35 yards) also ran for touchdowns for the Storm.

One week after rushing for 230 yards on 50 carries in a win over Erie-Prophetstown, Amboy tailback Chris Jones was held to 55 yards on 20 rushes.

DIXON – Friday was Cody Mighell’s birthday, and without a doubt, he was given plenty of presents.

But during the Dukes’ Big Northern West game at Stillman Valley, Mighell gave his team a present that they all could enjoy – a touchdown in the third quarter that helped seal win No. 5 for the playoff-eligible Dukes.

“The thing I wanted was the ‘W,’” Mighell said. “When we came in at the beginning of the year, we thought we would be the ones to change it around, now that we are seniors. We won five games, but we can’t stop. We’ve got to keep going.”

Dixon’s 22-20 win over the Cardinals marked the first time since 2006 that it reached the important five-win mark. The win did not come easy, with the first half ending with a 3-2 Duke lead. After Mighell’s 3-yard run with 8:40 to go in the third, however, the Dukes scoped out the Cardinal defense better to make larger runs.

“I saw a lot of pressure from the right,” Mighell said. “I had to go left because there was

nothing back-side, when I saw three guys coming at me.

I just had to tuck the ball away and put my shoulders down to get as far as I could to get Cody into the end zone.”

Mighell The Cardinals Dixon (2-5, 2-3 BNC West) senior had a greater time of possession in the first half with their powerful triple option, and made two trips to the Duke red zone in the first 3½ minutes.

The Cardinals’ closest shot at a first-half score failed from 11 yards out, as quarterback Logan Byers’ fourth-down pass to the right-side pylon was tipped by defensive end Ryan Webb.

But on the first play after the turnover, a bad snap and quick handoff to Quinton Douglas resulted in a safety, as Pat Rhoads came in for the tackle.

Only as the first half came to an end did the Dukes (5-2, 3-2) post some points. Christian Hicks, playing in his first varsity game, nailed a low field goal from 30 yards out to end the half with a one-point lead.

Almost 3 minutes after Mighell’s score, Byers punched in one of his own from a yard out, but failed to convert afterward to keep the Dukes ahead by two.

Dixon went up by eight with 8:45 remaining in the game.

JD Gieson found Matt Coffey for a 22-yard score. It was one of two scoring connections between the duo, as the other extended a 16-14 lead to eight with an 8-yard scoring strike with 2:42 left.

“We put in some stuff this week that we could exploit, because there is open grass when they play zone like that,” Coffey said. “We exploited it.

Me and JD have been doing this for 3 years now, so we pretty much know where we are all going to be.”

With 36.2 seconds left, the Cardinals – fighting for their playoff lives – hit pay dirt as Ethan Roberts capped a drive that saw three plays with firstdown yardage.

Up 22-20, the Dukes stopped the chance at a tie as Byers fumbled and ran off to his right

“I saw the wing go deep, and I read it. He went over the side, and I let the quarterback think that he was open,” Mayes said.

Smith called it a team win.

“It’s hard to put into words to beat a Stillman Valley team at home,” said Smith, who won his 100th game as a head coach.

“I told the kids that they were going to get their best game.

[Stillman Valley coach] Mike Lalor’s teams always play better this time of the year. I know he doesn’t have the team he’s had in the past, but we didn’t tell the kids that. It means a lot to have five wins, but I don’t think it takes the pressure off because you got two more games.”

“Holy cow,” Coffey exclaimed after the game. “It’s unreal. We got five. It makes us at-large, but we want to get six and seven to make sure we are in. We’re going to do our best. I still can’t believe it. That’s a high school football game right there.”

Trailing 27-14 heading into the final quarter, Kevin Kurz scored a safety on a tackle for loss, then Jacob Hilliker threw a short TD pass to Dylan Pitzer to make it 27-24 with 1:42 left. But AFC (3-4, 2-4 NUIC Upstate) couldn’t get that final possession to close out the comeback.

The Raiders outrushed East Dubuque (3-4, 2-4) 227-195, but the Warriors held a 307-267 edge in total yards. David Zinke ran for a game-high 130 yards on 16 carries for AFC, while Hilliker (19 yards) and Jake Hageman (34 yards) each ran for a score.
