Kickin’ Leafs out Diaz’s field goal proves difference in Warriors’ big win

STERLING – Sterling kicker and soccer star Tony Diaz missed a penalty kick against Geneseo on Tuesday, and a long field-goal attempt at the end of the first half in Friday’s football game against the Maple Leafs.

But he wasn’t about to miss again.

Diaz boomed a 37-yarder to put the Golden Warriors up by two scores, and it turned out to be important as Sterling hung on for a 17-14 win in a key NIB-12 West matchup at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

It was Geneseo’s first regular-season loss since Week 4 in 2013 to Sycamore. The streak was snapped at 20.

“The first one, the hold was a little off and I didn’t get a good kick,” Diaz said of his 43-yard try at the end of the half. “So it was nerve-racking, looking at the scoreboard, seeing the time, and knowing this was a big moment.”

Diaz knew he had enough

leg, kicking 55-yarders in warmups. It was just a matter of all the moving parts going right.

“I knew I had to stay calm,” Diaz said. “It was one of the best feelings ever seeing it go in. That kick pretty much sealed it.”

His kick with 5:25 to play in the game put Sterling (6-1, 3-0 NIB-12 West) up 17-7. Warriors safety Turner Morse picked off Geneseo quarterback Will Daniels on the fourth play of the ensuing possession. The vertical threat on the route fell down, and Morse knew Daniels’ only option was the drag, and Morse jumped the route to give Sterling the ball back.

“I wanted to make some plays,” Morse said. “I felt I had to redeem myself after a bad week last week. I kept my head up and made one.”

But the Maple Leafs didn’t go away. Their defense forced a three-and-out, and Daniels orchestrated a nine-play, 60-yard scoring drive to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 12.8 left on the clock.

to score. Two Hail Mary attempts failed and Sterling hung on for the win.

The Maple Leafs (6-1, 2-1) came in with a stout defense that allowed just 32 points through the first 6 weeks, including allowing zero points in first quarters – until Friday. Geneseo held Sterling Thornton – the area’s No. 3 leading rusher entering play – to 19 yards on 15 carries, but the Warriors found other players to step up.

Sterling scored on its opening drive on a Thornton 1-yard run, and added another score early in the second half when Thornton found receiver Jordan Asbury down the sideline for a 34-yard touchdown reception.

The Warriors looked like the defensive monster, as defensive end Treay Martin raised the bar. The junior was a wrecking ball, picking up two sacks and three tackles for loss.

“We’re not as big as them,” Martin said. “But we played hard and got into their backfield. We stepped on their throats and made it tough all night.”

Defense when needed Dukes make key stops in second half to knock off Stillman Valley

DIXON – On a night when the Dixon offense was clicking on all cylinders, Friday’s game against Stillman Valley came down to the defense getting big plays in the final seconds.

The Dukes thwarted two pass attempts in the final 10 seconds at A.C. Bowers Field, securing a hard-fought 44-36 victory over the Cardinals to become playoff eligible with their fifth win.

“We know the offense has our backs,” senior defensive back Benny Mayes said, “and it was our turn to have theirs at the end. We knew we were going to do whatever we had to do to stop their offense, especially with our backs to the wall to win the game.”

Dixon (5-2, 3-2 Big Northern West) had things going on both sides of the ball in the first half, as the defense got two stops in four Stillman Valley drives, and the offense scored on four of its five possessions; the only time it was stopped was due to the clock running out for halftime.

The Dukes amassed 322 total yards before the break, with senior quarterback Nate Gascoigne completing 16 of his 17 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns – both to Kyle LeBlanc, who had 126 yards receiving in the game.

“Everything was working, and we were

just taking what their defense gave us,” said Gascoigne, who finished 26-for-29 for 250 yards. “We threw the ball well, we ran it well, and we have so many weapons – and they were all on tonight.”

The second half saw the Cardinals (3-4, 3-2) find their offensive rhythm. Stillman scored on three of its six drives, and got as close as 38-36 with 4:13 to play.

But two of those non-scoring possessions were stopped by fumbles, which Dixon turned into Nyrel Sullivan’s third and fourth touchdown runs. The second of those fumbles was the killer, as it came after the Cardinals defense had forced a punt. Sullivan’s 10-yard TD run after Kaylon Westmorland recovered the fumble gave the Dukes a 44-36 lead with 2:16 remaining.

Panthers get back on track with rout of Boilermakers

PROPHETSTOWN – With morale not so great after back-to-back heartbreaking losses, the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers felt a sense of urgency Friday before their home game with Kewanee.

Before game time, Panthers senior lineman Jack Heflin had a conversation with junior Kody Wetzell.

“It’s your night. You’re going to have a big one,” Heflin recalled of their conversation.

“If you don’t get me three touchdowns, we’re going to have problems.”

Little would Heflin know, Wetzell accomplished that task in a matter of 8 minutes, 32 seconds. Running the game’s opening kick for a touchdown, intercepting a pass for another, and rushing for yet another, Wetzell helped put the Boilermakers in a hole early as the Panthers won 48-23 at Mosher Field.

for 41 yards about a minuteand-a-half later, and rushed for a score from 14 yards on a sweep left.

“We were all ready,” Wetzell said. “I could see in my team’s eyes that we were all ready to go. That fired me up.”

Getting by the Boilermakers’ passing game was a challenge for the Panthers (4-3, 2-2 TRAC Mississippi). Sheets slipped and slid past Panthers defenders in pressure situations. And when pressure mounted, Sheets made good on most of his connections – including a pair of deep heaves to Donavan Oliver for scores.

Sheets passed for 291 yards on 20-for-31 passing for the Boilermakers (2-5, 0-5), but mustered only 1 yard on 11 keepers. Heflin had a pair of long-loss sacks for a net of 21 yards.

“He’ll be looking down the field, but he sees you coming,” Heflin said about Sheets.

“So he would just step back real quick, and I’ll lift and look silly. I just try to get up and get him again. But by the time I get up, the ball’s gone.

He’s just a great athlete.”

Rude return Comets’ back gets Newman on track

SHERRARD – Once again, Brady Rude lit up the stat sheet.

The Comets’ senior back had 191 all-purpose yards, 3 touchdowns, and didn’t see a snap in the second half against Sherrard on Friday. His biggest play might have been when he tiptoed the sidelines in the second quarter for a 30-yard rushing score.

Or it might have come when he returned a safety kickoff 60 yards to the house untouched.

But Rude – and fellow backs Logan Whitman, Landen Vesley, Hunter Webb, and Garret Stringer – didn’t find the end zone singlehandedly and relatively untouched.

Newman’s 54-7 win over the Tigers, Rude said, was owed to the guys up front.

“I couldn’t do anything without our line,” Rude said. “This was a good refresher for us, coming off a loss. We look at the next game and we know the next one is the biggest one. ...

“But I can’t reiterate enough about our offensive line.”

ierre Schneider and Anton Landau live in the same town in Germany, and attend schools located 5 miles apart. The friends are active in sports, albeit different ones.

But the two had to travel more than 4,400 miles to finally face off against each other on a field of play.

Schneider and Landau are foreign exchange students from Kleinmachnow, Germany, a town of 30,000 people just south of Berlin. Schneider is spending the year at AFC High School, while Landau is at River Ridge High School.

And on Friday night, the two Germans met on an Illinois football field to take part in the coin toss for an American football game.

“I never calculate with situations like this,” Schneider said in fluent English, with a heavy German accent. “I thought, OK, I have 10 friends who did the exchange here. Two or three are in Canada and the United Kingdom; the other one is in San Francisco. So to

What rankings really mean?

S

tate rankings mean different things to different folks.

For Princeton fans, whose Tigers are ranked for the first time in 12 years, now at No. 4 in 3A, it means everything. The town is simply abuzz.

In places like Sterling Newman, where state rankings, in particular No. 1s, are as common as the St. Louis Cardinals playing in October, it’s tradition.

Newman coach Mike Papoccia said he addresses the rankings once with his team at the start of each season and that’s the last time they talk about it.

“I say, ‘Guys this is just some people saying we have a really good program going and it’s supposed to happen every year, and it doesn’t happen by just wishing.

It happens by doing,’” he said. “It’s just another cross to bear trying to live up to it.

“I don’t even know what we’re ranked now, if we’re ranked at all. If we’re No. 1 at end of the year, I’d be happy.”

Hall senior captain Jake Merkel said while it’s nice to be recognized, “we know the rankings don’t mean anything in the season. The only time they matter is after

Thanksgiving.”

St. Bede coach Jim Eustice, whose Bruins received one vote in 3A, said, “Honestly, (I) put zero weight (in them). If that week’s opponent is, then it’s a whole different story. “(We) can use as motivation if the opponent is ranked,” he said.

That ploy certainly hasn’t hurt Princeton.

It’s already helped them knock off then No. 2 Hall and then No. 1 Newman this season.

And now with their No. 4 ranking and climbing, the target has been placed directly on the backs of the Tigers.

Snyder continues to stress to his squad to stay the course, no matter what ranking may come their way.

“The rankings are exciting, but not something we are focused on. Our focus is on continued improvement from one week to the next,” he said. “We want to focus on one opponent at a time. The only thing that matters is our preparation and work ethic throughout the week to be successful.”

Having so many league members, six of the 14 teams (three in the top 5) receiving votes speaks volumes for the Three Rivers, Tieman said.

“The TRAC is always a grind and always seem to have multiple teams ranked. It is one of the top small school conferences in the state,” he said.

Eustice said the Three Rivers is one of toughest conferences in the state regardless of what the polls may say.

“It means we have some really good programs,” Papoccia said.

Homecoming win nets first 7-0 start in school history for PHS

PRINCETON — No team from Princeton High School since football was first played at the state’s oldest township school had ever started off a season 7-0. Until now.

The 2015 Princeton Tigers marched to that elusive streak with a convincing 21-7 win over St. Bede in Three Rivers Mississippi Conference play in front of a large Homecoming crowd Friday night at Bryant Field.

The Bruins scored first, but the Tigers answered with 21 straight points on three touchdowns by Jacob “Bubba” Smith and put themselves in the record books.

“Everybody’s here on Homecoming, first team to go 7-0. To do it with these guys and coaches, it’s just awesome,” Smith said.

“It means everything in the world to me. We’re all grateful to be a part of this team and none of us would change it for the world.

It’s the greatest thing to happen to me,” PHS senior lineman Chaz Williams said.

The game didn’t quite start out how the Tigers would have scripted. The Bruins mounted a 16-play, 72-yard drive on their first possession with Baylee

Hopps scoring on a 3-yard run.

That proved to be a wake-up call for the Tigers defense, which had allowed just 5.5 ppg coming in.

PHS was stopped at the goal line on an interception by Josh Sapp.

PHS’ Jett Wedekind returned the favor with a pick of his own to set the Tigers up at the Bruins 24. Two plays later, Smith cashed in a 17-yard score and Tanner Kuhne’s PAT tied the game at 7.

“We needed to answer as soon as we could, keep the momentum in check and really keep our guys in focus and ready to go,” Smith said.

Smith added a 5-yard TD reception from Jacob Reinhardt with 1:15 before half to make it 14-7.

Smith proved to be king on homecoming with a 46-yard TD romp in the third quarter.

Steamers get physical Steamers derail Storm’s push for playoffs

MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley Storm’s roller-coaster season continued against Fulton as the Steamers came into town and handed the Storm a 40-20 loss Friday night in Manlius.

Big and flashy plays were few and far between for both teams on the night as the Steamer offense opted to pound the ball with success into heart of the BV defense and controlled the ground game from the onset of the night.

“I don’t know why we came out slow because this is a huge game for us but for whatever reason we just came out slow,” BV coach Spencer Davis said. “We’ve had problems with big and physical teams all year long and they are both big and physical up front. That’s just it they just pounded the ball down the field,” After going down 21-0 on a twoyard dive by Steamer senior Trey Simmons with 4:00 to play in the first half, the Storm answered just 99 seconds later. Sophomore quarterback Drake Davis found Konneck streaking through the Steamers defense for a 56-yard connection and the game’s longest play to cut into the Fulton lead 21-6.

Fulton wasted no time in answering as senior Michael Pidde pound-

ed his second touchdown of the night in from six yards out with only 19.7 to go in the half.

The Storm came out strong in the second half, matching the Steamers’ offensive production step-forstep, but the first half hole they had dug themselves into was already too deep as they came up short 40-20.

The Storm came into the night trying to make a push for playoff contention and attempted to ride momentum they built on last week’s record-setting performance from senior running back Will Konneck. He racked up 462 yards on the ground and etched his name into the IHSA record books with the sixth best rushing performance in state history.

On Friday, Konneck broke the 100yard mark with 125 yards on 14 touches but the Steamer defense keyed on the talented back the entire game.

BV’s Caje Peterson has come on strong within the last three weeks and was flying around the field on defense, recording 16 tackles and a fumble recovery. He also added a 5-yard rushing touchdown for good measure late in the fourth.

“For the second or third game in a row, he’s just picked it up another notch. On defense he’s all over and that what we need. The kid just has a drive and doesn’t stop,” Davis said.

Tate Renkes scored on a 3-yard run in overtime to lift Morrison to a 20-17 upset of Orion in a Three Rivers Rock contest Friday night at Bud Cole Field in Morrison.

The Chargers (6-1, 4-1) had taken a 17-14 lead on a 22-yard field goal by Ryan Fowler to open the overtime period.

MENDOTA – Rock Falls threw every defensive look it could think of at Mendota on Friday night, but nothing worked in another lopsided loss for the Rockets.

This time, the defeat – a 57-7 thrashing – came at the hands of the Trojans, who entered the game winless and most likely represented Rock Falls’ best remaining chance at a victory this season.

Instead, head coach Rich Montgomery was left searching for answers.

“I don’t know. I just don’t know. I didn’t even speak to the team after the game, because I don’t know what to say,” Montgomery said. “We tried five-man fronts, sevenman fronts. I don’t know.

Maybe [Week 8 opponent] Dixon will let us play with more players on the field.”

Mendota used methodical drives to take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, scoring on an 11-play, 52-yard drive to start the game, and on a seven-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a

touchdown on the final play of the opening frame.

For its part, Rock Falls (0-7, 0-5 Big Northern West) moved the ball well early, but the ball control demonstrated by the Trojans (1-6, 1-4) kept the ball out of the hands of the Rockets, who had just one possession in the first quarter. That possession sputtered out at midfield, but on its next possession, Rock Falls had its best play of the game – a pictureperfect deep pass by Logan Pillars to Michael Berentes for a 33-yard score to cut the deficit to 14-7.

But the fun didn’t last. Mendota answered with a long TD pass of its own three plays later, and the rout was on.

Pillars had 149 passing yards in the first half, but turnovers on two of their first three possessions in the second half prevented the Rockets from staying competitive in the third quarter.

Rock Falls turned the ball over a total of five times in the second half.

Senior running back Braeden Westfall had 60 yards on 21 carries.

Jacob Hilliker passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another as Ashton-Franklin Center rolled to a 43-2 victory against River Ridge on Friday night in Hanover.

Hilliker opened the scoring with a 19-yard TD pass to David Zinke, and the Raiders (4-3, 4-2 NUIC Upstate) were off to the races. He later threw TD passes of 27 yards to James Talley and 65 yards to Kaywan Palmer. All three of Hilliker’s completions went for touchdowns.

Palmer, Hilliker and Jake Hageman each had rushing touchdowns.

Adam Hart led the defense with six tackles and a sack.

Winnebago 27, Oregon 23: The Hawks couldn’t

answer two late scores from the Indians in a Big Northern West road loss.

All of the Hawks’ 325 yards came on the ground, highlighted

by Brayton Finch’s 157 yards on 11 carries. Finch scored twice on runs of 75 and 11 yards, including a

score with 10:11 to play to put Oregon (2-5, 1-4 BNC West) up 23-15.

Finch also added a 22-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

But Winnebago scored 12 unanswered points in the final 7 minutes of the game to seal the win.

Maverik Good added 85 yards on the ground for the Hawks, while John Ghibellini finished with 64 yards on 14 touches.

Polo 61, Aquin 7: Brooks Grobe rushed eight times for 188 yards and four touchdowns as the Marcos handled the visiting Bulldogs.

Grobe had TD runs of 16, 48 and 32 yards in the first quarter, and a 63-yard scoring run in the third period. He also caught an 11-yard TD pass from Brody Grobe.

Brad Cavanaugh booted a 25-yard field, and took back an interception 66 yards for a TD. Tristen Aguilar capped off the scoring for Polo (7-0, 6-0 NUIC Upstate) with a 59-yard run in the fourth quarter.

West Carroll 24, East Dubuque 20: The Thunder

earned a road NUIC Northwest win after Eric LaShelle put them up for good.

LaShelle scored on a 5-yard run, and Ethan Mangler ran in the 2-point conversion to put West Carroll (5-2 overall, 4-2 NUIC Northwest) up for good. It was the Thunder’s fifth win of the season, making them playoff eligible.

Mangler added a 4-yard touchdown run, and Kody Plattenberger had a 1-yard score in the win.

Chris Hammonds ran for three touchdowns while Drew Pullam threw for two touchdowns in Hall’s win over Riverdale.

The Red Devils qualified for the playoffs with their sixth win of the season.
