Football back in Prophetstown P

ROPHETSTOWN – Jack Bauer remembers vividly watching football games in his hometown, dreaming of one day being out under those lights on Mosher Field, right next to the high school he would be attending.

The last 2 weeks, he and his fellow Prophetstown natives have finally gotten the chance.

After 3 years without a game in Prophetstown, the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers football team has finally returned to that side of the co-op.

“I remember those games from middle school, and I always looked forward to playing in front of my hometown fans,” Bauer said. “The atmosphere here has been awesome, and I think everyone used those emotions of finally being back in a really positive way during the games.”

After the 2010 season, Prophetstown High School received a grant to upgrade its facilities.

ROCK FALLS – For the first 32 minutes of Friday’s Big Northern West tilt against Stillman Valley, the Rock Falls Rockets played some of their best football of the season.

With 4 minutes, 28 seconds to go in the third quarter, the Rockets trailed by five points at 19-14, after a Bailee Rosalez 1-yard push and a two-point conversion. With that deficit that late in the game, the Rockets appeared to make the game a tight one until the end.

But a minute later, Stillman Valley hit paydirt once more, and never looked back. Ethan Roberts’ 2-yard score and a pair of 1-yard punch-ins by Connor Lewin broke the game open to a 38-14 Cardinal lead.

However, when the Cardinals second-string turned the ball over on downs, Noah Junis and Connor Cain connected together for one final score with 32 seconds left in the game.

The Rockets’ 38-20 loss had its ups and downs, but what stood out the most for the team was not packing up the bags until the fourth quarter ended.

Winless coming into the game, the Rockets (0-6, 0-4 BNC West) sought to both deny the Cardinals (2-4, 2-2) a playoff berth for only the second time since 1997, and to finish strong knowing the final four games will be the last.

For the first time this season, the Rockets put up the first points of a game. Just 45 seconds in, Junis connected with Jacob Mammosser on a 42-yard play. “They were playing a coverthree 15 yards off, and I knew Jacob was going to outrun them,�

Junis said. “I had to throw it quick, and he did the rest.�

The ensuing two-point pass conversion failed, and the Rockets’ first lead of the season

was washed away in a matter of 10 seconds. The run-happy Cardinals decided on rare air, with Logan Byers connecting with Mitch Castronovo for an 18-yard play. The Cardinals led 7-6 after the PAT kick, and never trailed the rest of the way.

The Cardinals increased their lead late in the first quarter on a halfback pass play that saw Byers hand off to Seth VanBriesen, who then threw to Matt Lewis for a 32-yard score.

Down 19-6 after Byers ran for a 5-yard score in the third quarter, the Rockets turned to Rosalez for his first carries of the game. In four plays, Rosalez used key runs of 9 and 15 yards to set up his score. A Junis-toMammosser connection for two narrowed the Cardinal lead to five before the Cardinals milked the clock on short runs to put the game away. “We played tough for three quarters,� Rock Falls coach Scott Berge said. “We had a couple of mental lapses there.

When you do that against a team like Stillman Valley, you can’t give them any breaks.

When you got them on the ropes, you got to put them away. We just weren’t able to do it tonight.� “As long as you stick in it, you can win any game,� Braeden Westfall said. “Just play your hardest the whole game.�

Junis completed 24 passes in 44 tries for 319 yards, but had four interceptions. Cain and Mammosser reached the century mark in receiving yards with 118 and 109 yards. Westfall churned out 63 yards on 18 attempts. In all, the Rockets turned the ball over eight times.

Puzzle solved Marcos no match for high-powered Wildcatz

LANARK – Eastland-Pearl City was at less than full strength, but it was hard to tell that for much of Friday’s game against Polo.

The Wildcatz, playing without two key backfield starters, were dominant in most phases of the game on their way to a 45-28 victory against the Marcos in an NUIC crossover contest at Eastland High School.

Leading the way for EPC were a pair of seniors, Walter Ollie and Donny Groezinger, and sophomore Keegan Schubert.

Ollie, normally a wide receiver for the Wildcatz (6-0), stepped in at quarterback for Deven Heeren, whose time was very limited due to a shoulder injury suffered last week against LenaWinslow. Ollie rushed 18 times for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Groezinger gave the Polo defense fits with his speed and quickness, and rushed 20 times for 109 yards and three touchdowns. He also had two TDs called back due to penalties.

Schubert got the call at fullback, as senior starter Eric Schaney was sitting out after getting whistled for a targeting penalty against Le-Win last

“It’s like puzzle pieces,” Ollie said. “We move around, but we still get the job done.”

“We had some guys filling in some spots,” EPC coach Randy Asche said, “but they did a good

job. That’s what they’re supposed to do. They practiced hard, and did a good job.”

The Wildcatz seized control early on touchdown runs by Groezinger and Ollie on two of the team’s first three possessions, then did further damage when the Marcos (4-2) had the ball. On a second-and-17 play

from the Polo 33, Marcos’ QB Brody Grobe threw a short pass that hit the hands of receiver Brad Cavanaugh.

Schubert, the cornerback on the play, arrived at the same instant, snatched the ball from Cavanaugh’s grasp, and ran in untouched 33 yards for a score that upped the margin to 21-0.

Polo’s lone first-half offensive highlight was a 42-yard halfback option pass from Richie Bartnick to Grobe for a TD with 3:41 remaining in the second quarter.

EPC responded immediately.

A 55-yard kickoff return by Ollie put the Wildcatz in business at the Polo 10, and Groezinger scored from there.

The Marcos then had a threeand-out possession that ended with a shanked 6-yard punt. EPC covered 25 yards in four plays, with Schubert crashing in from 4 yards for a 33-7 halftime lead.

When the Wildcatz opened the second half with a 10-play, 57-yard march, capped by a 1-yard TD by Groezinger, the mercy rule seemed imminent.

Polo, however, scored on all three of its second-half possessions to narrow the gap.

Dylan Beers got into the end zone twice on short runs, and a fumbled kickoff by EPC led to a short TD plunge by Marcos reserve quarterback Wyatt Patterson to cap off the scoring.

“We fought very hard in the second half,” Polo coach Andrew Hofer said, “which I’m proud of the guys for doing.

[Eastland] is a good ball club.

We’ve just got to regroup and get ready for next week.”

Playing keep-away Amboy controls the clock in Three Rivers win over Panthers

PROPHETSTOWN – One of the best ways to stop an explosive offense is to play keep-away.

The Amboy Clippers would’ve won every game of keep-away ever on Friday night.

Amboy held the ball for 8 minutes, 30 seconds in the second quarter, and for 16:16 in the second half to keep the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers in check and leave Mosher Field with an 18-14 victory.

It was the Clippers’ lines that dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball, opening holes for 281 yards on the ground, then stuffing the Panther attack. Take away the 101 yards on Dylan Binion’s two long touchdown runs, and ErieProphetstown (4-2, 3-1 Three Rivers North) gained just 74 yards on the ground.

The Panthers’ longest drive lasted 5:02, and that was the drive to open the second half; it was capped by Binion’s 31-yard TD run on the 10th play from scrimmage.

Amboy, on the other hand, had three drives of at least 5:13, and held the ball for at least 2:45 on all but one of its eight possessions.

“We just didn’t play Panther football tonight,” EP junior lineman Jack Heflin said. “We didn’t

do what we were supposed to on defense, and they pushed us around because of it. This is an upsetting game for us, and it’s definitely a wake-up call.”

The Clippers (5-1, 3-0) punted on their first two possessions, then lost a fumble one play after Binion’s 70-yard scoring scamper.

But the defense held, forcing a three-and-out in Amboy territory.

thers’ punt, Amboy went 80 yards in 14 plays, with Dallas Appleman scoring from 3 yards out.

After a three-and-out – and EP’s ensuing 14-yard punt – the Clippers covered 40 yards in 11 plays, this time taking a 12-8 lead when Chris Jones scored from 2 yards out.

Jones carried the ball 50 times for 230 yards, while Appleman added 15 rushes for 50 yards; nine of Appleman’s carries went for first downs, in addition to the TD.

“We just got aggressive, picked up the intensity,” Jones said.

“The line made all the difference; they were getting a great push on every play, and it made Me and Dallas’ lives a whole lot easier.”

The Panthers re-took the lead after that first drive of the third quarter, but Amboy again answered methodically. The Clippers went 67 yards in 12 plays, with Liam Ohlendorf crashing in from 1 yard out on a quarterback sneak for an 18-14 lead.

Then, a fourth-down stop after Dvaree Thompson’s 59-yard kickoff return set up the Panthers at the Amboy 33 got the ball back for the Clippers’ offense, and they took 8:16 off the clock before settling for a field-goal attempt that was blocked.

Erie-Prophetstown’s last chance ended on a fumble at the Amboy 49 with 2:47 left to play; the Clippers ran out the clock after Hunter Varga’s recovery.

“We had a lot of young kids out there, and they finally played like it tonight,” EP coach Chuck Milem said. “Amboy beat us in the trenches, but we still had opportunities, and I just didn’t think we played a good football game tonight.”

No worries Dukes bounce back from loss to beat Winnebago

DIXON – Dave Smith and the Dixon football coaches had a laundry list of concerns heading into Friday night’s game against Winnebago.

The Dukes responded by taking the defending Big Northern West champions to the cleaners in a 44-8 victory at A.C. Bowers Field on their homecoming.

First and foremost, the Dukes (4-2, 2-2), wanted to erase the memories of last week’s disheartening 44-23 loss at Mendota, a defeat that effectively spiked any hope Dixon had of winning the Big Northern West in its first season in the conference.

The biggest issue in that game was an early deficit that left the Dukes playing catch-up the whole way. Against Winnebago, Dixon scored 21 first-quarter points, including a game-opening 51-yard dash up the middle

Second, Dixon was hoping not to let the distraction of homecoming week lead to sloppy play. The Dukes committed nine penalties for 85 yards a week ago, and doing so against a hungry Indians team clinging to its playoff life would be

But on Friday, Dixon played a penalty-free first half, and was flagged just three times in the game.

“We did a better job of executing on both sides tonight,” Smith said. “We didn’t hurt ourselves at all this week.”

Mighell finished with a gamehigh 159 rushing yards, adding a 28-yard TD in the fourth quarter to give his team a 37-0 lead.

Senior quarterback JD Gieson completed 7 of his 17 passes for 166 yards, including a 52-yard strike to Matthew Coffey in the second quarter. Coffey led all receivers with four catches and 113 yards.

The Dukes are within one victory of securing their first winning season since 2006. Doing so would all but guarantee Dixon of a playoff berth. Junior lineman Caleb Moton, who recorded a sack and was taking up residence in the Indians backfield much of the game, said he hopes his team can ride the wave of momentum, but do so while remaining grounded.

“The team did a good job of coming out and staying focused,” he said. “We try to stay level-headed. We don’t want to have happen what has happened in the past. As far as the playoffs go, we just have to take it one game at a time.”

Creating a carry Esclante’s fumble recovery spurs Warriors past Pirates

STERLING – By the time the third quarter began, Rafael Escalante hadn’t touched the football in nearly 30 minutes.

He wanted to get his hands on one.

Despite not being on offense, Escalante couldn’t wait any longer and blew up an Ottawa jet sweep and stripped the ball from tailback Adam Poundstone.

“Those guys could run, and we just wanted to get in there and try to get the ball from them,” Escalante said. “All I was thinking about was ripping that ball away. Coach told us to take it.”

Escalante’s fumble recovery on the second play of the second half was one of four on the night for the Sterling defense that forced five fumbles.

Without Porter, the Pirates ran their offense out of the wildcat formation, with running back Josh Williams collecting the shotgun snaps.

Williams picked up 119 yards on 15 carries, and backfieldmate Poundstone rushed for

33 yards on 17 touches. Ottawa (1-5, 1-1 NIB-12 West) threw three times and was held without a completion.

“We knew it was coming, but it was still tough to stop,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said of Ottawa’s running game. “That No. 21 [Williams] is a great runner. You can’t prepare for a guy with that much speed, but we

were able to clamp down a bit in the second half.”

The Golden Warriors’ defense allowed 243 rushing yards – the most all season – though 152 of those yards came in the first half. Sterling brought more pressure up the middle with its defensive line in the second half and added pressure to the outside to stifle the jet sweeps that

the Pirates used to pick up big chunks of yards in the first half.

Sterling (5-1, 2-0) also featured a succesful rushing attack, totaling 231 yards. The Golden Warriors opened the game with a 59-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Sterling Thornton.

Schlemmer preached all week that the linebackers had to get involved in the run defense, and linebacker Jacob Heffelfinger stepped up and recovered a fumble on Ottawa’s first possession.

Sterling went 72 yards for its next score, capped by a 4-yard run by Escalante. Escalante had touchdown runs of 4 and 15 yards, while Thornton added two scoring runs of 2 and 3 yards.

With its fifth win, Sterling is now playoff eligible.

Newman guaranteed playoff spot with win

Newman guaranteed a spot in the playoffs after collecting its sixth win, 50-0 over Riverdale in Three Rivers North play in Port Byron.

The Comets (6-0, 4-0 TRAC North) scored 42 points by halftime and added another score midway through the fourth quarter to finish off Riverdale. Running back Brady Rude had three touchdowns on runs of 44, 28 and 41 yards, all of which came in

the first half.

Nolan McGinn added a 34-yard rushing score, and Dillan Heffelfinger added two rushing scores of his own Dillan Heffelfinger in the second Newman quarter on runs senior of 36 and 3 yards.

Eli Monier capped the scoring with a 28-yard interception return with 7:28 to play in the game.

Flying high Forreston remains undefeated

LENA – Forreston’s second play from scrimmage, a 25-yard touchdown run by Robert DeVries, was called back for a holding penalty. That was all that was going to hold DeVries back.

DeVries paved the way for 15-6 win over LenaWinsow by rushing for 176 yards and two touchdown.

“My biggest concern was DeVries, and he showed why tonight,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said. “He’s such a dynamic player and so explosive as a runner.”

Of all the plays he made against the Panthers, the biggest was an arching 34-yard pumpfake pass to Keegan Akins into the wind from his own 6-yard line. That led to a nineplay scoring drive, culminating with DeVries running in from 5 yards out for a 15-6 lead mid-

way through the third quarter.

“That was the play of the game,” Forreston coach Denny Diduch.

“Everything we do through him, and he involves everyone.”

The win was Diduch’s first over Le-Win in eight tries. Last year, the Panthers edged Forreston in the first round of the 1A playoffs on their way to a state title.

“They’ve owned us for the last 7 years,” said a relieved Diduch, after getting a lengthy postgame kiss from his wife.

Forreston’s first score was similar to the second. It went for 80 yards on eight plays with a 24-yard pass from a scrambling DeVries to Wyatt Kerchner on thirdand-long. Two plays later, DeVries outraced the Le-Win secondary into the end zone for a 14-yard score and 7-0 second-quarter lead.

Le-Win came back down and had a first-

and-10 at the Cardinal 13-yard line, but a blitzing sack by linebacker Dylan Hensley snuffed out the drive. After a Forreston fumble, a bizarre play led to LeWin’s only score.

Quarterback Joe Robinson’s pass ricocheted off two Forreston players into the arms of a surprised Brendan Eilders. On the next play, Robinson ran 5 yards for Le-Win’s lone touchdown.

In the third quarter, the Panthers again drove inside the 10-yard line, but Hensley and Kendall Kuelling stopped Robinson for no gain on fourth down.

“What we did in the red zone was a testament to our defense,” Forreston defensive coordinator Kyle Zick said. “Le-Win was able to move the ball on us, and we hadn’t faced that kind of adversity all year.”

Kerchner came up

with another fourthdown stop for the Cardinals early in the fourth quarter on a knock down of a pass intended for Luke Schubert.

After another Forreston fumble, it was DeVries with an interception.

“Our defense stood up when it had to, and the offense did their normal job,” linebacker Max Barkalow said.

In a last-ditch drive, Robinson had to take himself out of the game after getting physically beat up by the Cardinals.

“Those outside backers [Barkalow and Gipe] gave us fits. They were so quick to the line of scrimmage,” Arand said. “Their whole team has so much speed and athleticism.”

The win by Forreston sets up a potential Week 9 matchup between the No. 1 team in 1A and Eastland-Pearl City, ranked near the top of 2A. Both are 5-0 in league play and 6-0 overall.

Davis connected with Tommy Johnston for two scores, on passes of 17 and 71 yards. Davis also found Parker Neuhalfen for a 71-yard strike.

The Storm (2-4, 1-2 TRAC North) gained 314 yards on the ground, 198 of which came from Will Konneck. Konneck scored two touchdowns on the ground on runs of 30 and 89 yards, and Josh Mead added another.
