Triple threat too much Spaulding, Vaughn, Thornton take apart Pirates in Ottawa

OTTAWA – With his ankle bothering him for the past 5 weeks, Sterling sophomore running back Latrell Vaughn experienced an increased amount of pain prior to his team’s NIB-12 West game against Ottawa on Friday “It’s been kind of off-and-on,” Vaughn said of his ankle. “It’s been something that’s kind of holding me back. I’m fighting with it.”

Vaughn wasn’t sure if he was going to play much, or at all.

During Sterling’s first play from scrimmage, head coach Jon Schlemmer kept yelling for him on the sideline, but to no avail.

Despite showing up late, Vaughn came through in enough time to come up with a key monotonybreaking touchdown in a 28-7 Golden Warrior win at King Field.

Up 14-7 with 7:57 left to go in the fourth quarter, Vaughn punctuated a Golden Warrior drive – started by a Turner Morse end-zone interception – with a 22-yard run up the middle to put his team up by a more comfortable margin.

Tony Diaz’s point-after kick made it a 21-7 game, and Andrew Spaulding later rushed for his sec-

ond 60-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach.

“I knew the score was too close for comfort,” Vaughn said. “I definitely felt the pressure, but I have trust in my line.”

Ottawa (4-2, 1-1 NIB-12 West) changed quarterbacks in the third quarter, with junior Sam Holtzman taking the reins from senior Bryce Bilyeu. On Holtzman’s second pass, he connected with Bilyeu, who moved to left-side wide receiver, on a 33-yard score.

Holtzman thrived under pressure, connecting on first-down pass after first-down pass to keep the Pirates in the game, but his team was hurt by numerous penalty yards (100 yards on 12 whistles) and a tenacious Golden Warrior defense which tallied 13 stops for no gain or negative yardage.

Fourth and too short Oregon runs into Byron team that gets clicking in 2nd half

BYRON – When a team lives and dies by the rushing game, failed fourth-down conversions can be devastating. Oregon found that out Friday in a 38-14 Big Northern West loss to Byron.

The Tigers (5-1, 4-0) broke the game wide open in the second half with 28 unanswered points after stopping Oregon (2-4, 1-3) three times in the second quarter on fourth downs.

“Converting those plays usually energizes us,” Oregon coach John Bothe said. “The flipside of not getting first downs is that it flattens you. That’s the risk you take.”

With the score tied 7-7, the Hawks drove into Byron territory, but a fourth-down attempt came up a half-foot short. Byron upped its advantage to 10-7 on a Trevor Koritz field goal, and stopped Oregon again on a fourth-down try as a Jerrick Orsted pass fell incomplete.

Linebacker Maverik Good forced and recovered a fumble on the very next play on a bubble pass and Oregon found itself on Byron’s 39-yard line.

“We weren’t clicking on all cylinders in the first half,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said. “The key was the fourth-down stops.”

Another of those came four plays later, as John Ghibellini again came up a half-foot short on a fourth-down run.

Brayton Finch, who started the game with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, almost put Oregon back in the lead. With 15 seconds left in the second quarter, Finch intercepted Payton Janssen and was headed for the end zone until Zack Cogswell tripped him up along the sideline.

A 43-yard field goal attempt by Finch sailed just wide right as the half ended with Byron leading 10-7.

“We didn’t play well in the first half,” Boyer said. “A tip of the hat to Oregon. They kept the ball out of our hands and we couldn’t get in sync.”

That drastically changed in the second half, as Byron’s four scoring drives took only six, two, four and two plays.

The Tigers had 325 yards rushing.

‘They wore us down,” Bothe said.

“We simplified it in the second half,” Boyer said. “We established the fullback [Avery Carlson]. I was happy with the response after a poor first half.”

From sloppy to superb Marcos overcome slow start to cruise past Missiles

MILLEDGEVILLE – For a good chunk of the first quarter, Polo looked like the fifth-best team in Ogle County.

It wasn’t long, however, before the Marcos restored order against Milledgeville and looked like what they are – the fifth-ranked team in Class 1A. A long touchdown run by do-it-all senior Brad Cavanaugh lit a fire under Polo, and it went on to a 57-0 victory over the Missiles on Friday night at Floyd Daub Field. It was Milledgeville’s homecoming, but the Marcos were the ones in a celebratory mood afterward.

“It’s a blast just knowing what we’re capable of every week,” senior quarterback Wyatt Patterson said, “and going out and matching those capabilities. We know that we have some very lofty goals set, and we know what it takes to get those goals.”

Polo (6-0, 5-0 NUIC Upstate) overcame a nightmare of a start.

It committed four penalties on its opening possession, and that was followed by a 4-yard punt to set Milledgeville up at the Polo 13.

The Marcos’ next possession resulted in a fumble.

“We need to watch that,” Cavanaugh said of the sluggish start,”because anyone can beat anyone at any time.”

The turning point came late in the first quarter when Cavanaugh got loose for an 80-yard touchdown run up the right sideline. It appeared as though he would be brought down after a short gain, but ended up going the distance.

“Something needed to be done,” Cavanaugh said, “and luckily I had some great blocks. I ended up making two cuts, and then I was gone.”

The floodgates opened after that. Brooks Grobe scored on a 40-yard run, then Patterson scampered in from 8 yards.

Shot down in shootout Dukes can’t keep up with Indians in wild one in Winnebago

WINNEBAGO – “You can’t play 2 quarters and expect to win,” said Dixon coach Dave Smith.

In the first half Friday against Winnebago, the Dukes looked sharp in all phases of the offense.

For every Indians score, Dixon had an answer with a big play of its own, amassing 372 yards of offense and taking a 44-37 lead into the locker room.

But after halftime, the Dukes were flat. Winnebago’s defense forced 3 turnovers and two 4-andouts, and in the fourth quarter didn’t let Dixon past its own 47.

Falling 65-50, for Smith, it was a tale of two halves.

“I don’t care how good you are, you aren’t going to win if you only play 2 quarters of football,” he said. “Especially in the Big Northern West [Conference].”

Both teams set up an old fashioned shootout at the start. Dixon running back Arthur Cox started by breaking a 55-yard touchdown on the opening drive; receivers Nyrel Sullivan and Kyle LeBlanc each scored on long catch-and-runs fed by quarterback Nate Gascoigne to give Dixon a 21-14 first-quarter lead.

But every Dukes spurt was answered by Winnebago. After LeBlanc’s second touchdown

reception, Indians’ back Austin Leitzinger snapped off an 80-yard touchdown run, breaking through several Dukes tacklers. It was the second of three touchdowns on the night for Leitzinger, who led all rushers with 154 yards.

Before a high-scoring first half could close, however, the game came to a terrifying halt.

Trailing 44-30, on third down, Winnebago quarterback Jess Smith escaped the pocket and slid for the first down. The slide caused two Dukes defenders to collide, and lineman Ryan Troutman took the brunt.

Play was stopped for more than 20 minutes with trainers examining Troutman. He was taken by stretcher off the field, and Winnebago scored 7 plays later to close out the half trailing by one score.

Smith did not know Troutman’s status after the game. Steamers’ act proves hard to follow

ORRISON – It happens almost every game.

You’re watching football and the camera man is faked out on a play. We watch a guy run for a few yards before realizing he doesn’t have the ball.

Sound familiar?

Well, it was Fulton’s turn to pull one over everyone’s eyes during Friday’s Three Rivers Rock game against Morrison at Bud Cole Field. The Steamers won 42-16, in large part due to their running game being on all night.

Fulton picked up 261 of its 381 total yards on the ground. But, to the Mustangs’ surprise, this play wasn’t a run. It wasn’t even a pass from the quarterback.

Fulton tight end Keegan North found a seam in the Morrison secondary and hauled in a nice spiral from quarterback Tyler Sweenie for a touchdown, but it was called back because of a hold.

Steamers coach Patrick Lower called a timeout and dipped into his bag of tricks.

“It’s something we have in our playbook,” North said.

“We practice it a bunch but don’t run it all the time. We practice it enough to where we were confident, and it worked again.”

Out of the timeout, the Steamers faked a handoff and sent leading rusher Trey Simmons on a sweep. The ball actually went to running back Jack Lemke in the backfield, and the misdirection gave him some time to do his things.

Lemke, who had two interceptions and an onside kick recovery earlier in the game, pulled up short of the line of scrimmage and heaved the ball to North down the right sideline. North ran an identical route as the previous play, and hauled in a 33-yard

touchdown catch that gave Fulton some breathing room at 28-16 with 7:05 to play in the game.

It was the third time the two hooked up for touchdowns in their careers, as Lemke threw two TD passes to North last season.

“That was huge,” Lemke said. “We have a lot of chemistry and it came together on that play. We’re pretty much in sync. That’s a fun play.”

The exciting play was a heartbreaker on the other sideline as the Mustangs battled back all game and even made it a 5-point deficit on a score 5 minutes earlier, only to see their playoff hopes dashed by a nifty play call.

The Mustangs suffered their fifth loss, and now sit at 1-5, 1-2 in the TRAC Rock. Fulton, meanwhile, improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference, and is still very much in play for a playoff berth if it can win out.

“They’re big and fast,” Morrison quarterback Dylan Keller said. “They made some nice plays when they had to.”

That was certainly a nice play.

Eye of the Tigers Princeton adds No. 1 ranked Newman to its hit list

STERLING — The Princeton Tigers continue to take a wrecking ball to state-ranked football teams.

Their latest victim was No. 1 ranked (2A) Sterling Newman, whom the Tigers dispatched 14-0 Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium in Sterling. Both teams came in undefeated, but only the Tigers left 6-0.

The Tigers beat previously No. 2 ranked Hall 14-7 in Week 4.

“That’s huge, 6-0, playoffs. Almost conference champions. It means everything. it’s crazy,” said PHS senior Skye Behrends, who made two key interceptions. “People are finally starting to put Princeton on the map for football. They’ve been dissing us the whole time. Now we’re finally worth something. It feels good.”

“It’s a huge thing for our community and our program. It’s the first time we’ve been playoff eligible since 2003 and first time 6-0 since the 1980s,” PHS coach Jesse Snyder said.

Veteran Newman coach Mike Papoccia said the Tigers set the tone early defensively, when they thwarted the Comets first scoring opportunity. The Comets marched 62 yards to the PHS 8 only to come away empty-handed on two incomplete passes.

“They ruled after our first drive when we came up short after that.

They deserved to win, there’s no doubt about it,” Papoccia said. “I’m extremely impressed with their team. They just (outplayed us).”

Behrends made his first interception on the Comets’ second possession of the first quarter. That set up a 34-yard touchdown pass four plays later from PHS quarterback Jacob Reinhardt to Jett Wedekind with 2:36 to play in the first quarter.

Behrends’ second pick stopped Newman cold in the fourth quarter.

“Anybody could have done it,” Behrends said. “You just got to want it more than the guy next to you.

Snyder said it was all about playing assignment football.

Orion blasts Clippers Matson throws for 261 yards and three touchdowns

AMBOY — Through their first five games of the season, the Orion Chargers have been a runoriented offense. On Friday night at Amboy, they showed they have a passing attack too.

Junior quarterback Craig Matson threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Chargers spoiled Amboy’s Homecoming with a 53-14 victory at the Harbor.

“We’ve normally been a running team through the first five games,” junior running back Drake Schultz said. “Tonight we mixed in the passing game and our quarterback was hitting us.”

Matson attempted 24 passes in the first half. His only miscue was a costly one when he threw a second quarter interception that Amboy’s Cole Olson returned 59 yards to set up a 1-yard Ryon Richardson touchdown run.

Matson was hit hard on the throw and would later sit the entire second half for precautionary reasons, said Orion coach Chip Filler. Matson is expected to be fine for next week.

Filler took the blame for “a bad play call by our staff” on the interception.

Hall runs over Kewanee Red Devils score 35 points in 4th quarter to break game open

KEWANEE — It was Boom or Bust for the Hall Red Devils in their 57-21 romping of the Kewanee Boilermakers in Friday night’s Three Rivers matchup in Kewanee.

After trailing 22-0 at one point, Kewanee scraped its way back into the game on a one-yard quarterback sneak by junior Nick Sheets to make the score 22-14 Hall at the 11:08 mark of the fourth quarter.

“It was a good game for two and a half quarters. It was 8-0. We got some offense going and got some single coverage on Merkel and we took advantage of it. Those two have been together for a two years and they asked if they could check out of a play if they got a certain coverage and they have been able to do that all season,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said.

That’s when the boom came from Hall (5-1, 2-1 in conference) in a furious 1:49 seconds in the fourth quarter where the Red Devils scored three touchdowns over the span and recovered two fumbles on back-to-back muffed kickoff returns that busted any chance Kewanee had of staging a comeback.

Picking right spots Lemke’s interception helps Fulton pull away from Mustangs

MORRISON – With Fulton’s playoff hopes hanging on every game, Jack Lemke made sure his team was in the hunt for at least another week.

The Fulton defensive back intercepted Morrison quarterback Dylan Keller twice, recovered an onside kick and threw a touchdown pass of his own in a 42-16 win over the Mustangs on Friday at Bud Cole Field in Morrison.

The win allowed Fulton to keep the Wooden Shoe trophy for one more year. The teams have played for it since 1977.

“I pretty much knew what they were going to throw,” Lemke said.

“The way they were lined up, I just jumped the route.”

That pick midway through the fourth quarter set up his halfback pass to Kegan North that went for a 33-yard touchdown to give the Steamers a 28-16 lead. Just 15 seconds later, North recovered a fumble at the Mustangs’ 22 and ran it in for a score to put the game out of reach.

Morrison (1-5, 1-2) was eliminated from the playoffs with its fifth loss, but Keller and receiver Joey Brackemyer did just about everything to stop that from happening. The two connected six times for 94 yards, as Keller danced around in the pocket and made several perfect throws.

The Rock Falls Rockets fell behind early and never caught up in a 43-20 road loss to Stillman Valley on Friday night.

The Rockets (0-6, 0-4 Big Northern West) trailed 22-0 early in the second quarter, then Stillman Valley (3-3, 3-1) answered Logan Pillars’ 6-yard TD pass to Michael Berentes with another score in the final 2 minutes of the first half for a 29-8 halftime lead.

Pillars later connected with Blake Wind on a 13-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter, then Braeden Westfall ran in from 2 yards out to finish the scoring with 1:40 left to play.

But the Cardinals had already stretched the lead to 43-8 before the Rockets’ final two touchdowns.

Bureau Valley 63, Sherrard 27: Will Konneck ran for 437 yards and six touchdowns as the Storm rolled to a Three Rivers crossover victory on the road.

Konneck had a pair of 86-yard TD runs in the second half, and he also caught a 70-yard scoring strike from quarterback Drake Davis just 44 seconds into the game. Konneck averaged 16.8 yards per carry, and added 84 yards receiving.

Davis was 8-for-16 passing with 188 yards, and he also tossed a TD pass to Bryan Herr. Bureau Valley (3-3) outgained Sherrard (0-6) 716-320 in total yards, including 528-311 on the ground.

AFC 66, Orangeville 8: Jacob Hilliker, Jake Hageman and David Zinke ran for

two touchdowns apiece, and the Raiders rolled past the Broncos at Mel Barron Field in Franklin Grove.

Zinke ran for 97 yards on two carries, and Hageman had 83 yards on eight rushes to lead AFC (3-3, 3-2 NUIC Upstate). Kaywan Palmer, Demetrius Lahman and Stephen Brooke added scoring runs, and Palmer ran for 84 yards and caught two passes for 28 yards.

After Orangeville (0-6, 0-5) tied the score at 8-8 just 5 seconds into the second quarter, the Raiders scored 58 unanswered points. AFC outgained the Broncos 415-186 in total yards, and that included a 387-135 edge on the ground.

West Carroll 30, Durand 20: Ethan Mangler ran for 199 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Thunder to a NUIC Northwest win in Savanna.

West Carroll (4-2, 4-2) scored twice in the final 11 seconds of the first quarter, as Mangler scored on an 80-yard run with 11 seconds left, then Sal Magana returned a fumble 36 yards as time expired for a 16-0 lead.

After Durand got to within 16-14 at halftime, Mangler’s 23-yard scoring scamper extended the Thunder lead, then his 49-yard run came with 3:40 to play – just 14 seconds after Durand had pulled within 24-20.
