Dukes cash in on check Dixon audibles to right play in homecoming win over Trojans

DIXON – As the wide receiver closest to the Dixon sideline, Kandras Martin heard coach Dave Smith yell “CHECK!” early in the fourth quarter Friday night against Mendota.

So, Martin looked at his wristband to see what the play call was being checked to. Then he looked up – and saw tailback Nyrel Sullivan running right at him.

The ball had already been snapped, the play call stayed the same, and the Dukes are sure glad it did. Thanks to Martin’s block on the cornerback, Sullivan turned the corner and outran the safety 57 yards for the final touchdown of Dixon’s 35-14 homecoming win.

“I heard Coach yell ‘check’ right when I got the ball, so I knew I had to make a big play,” Sullivan said. “I got the ball, and I saw a lot of green grass in front of me, so I just turned it upfield and sprinted down the sideline.”

That was a recurring theme for Sullivan. The sophomore speedster ran for 204 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries, and that included TD runs of 54, 5 and 28 yards before his final long

scoring scamper.

After the teams went into halftime tied at 14, the Dukes (4-1, 2-1 Big Northern West) found another gear in the second half. They scored on their first three possessions after the break, the most impressive drive being a 93-yard march in 10 plays, highlighted by two long runs by quarterback Nate Gascoigne, who scored from 6 yards out three plays after breaking a 31-yarder to the Mendota 9-yard line.

“I don’t usually do that, but they were leaving things open for me,” said Gascoigne, who ran for 61 yards and threw for 61 more. “One long run was a broken play, and the other one was a pass play where I just took off up the middle.

Looking for answers Rockets trying to find intensity after latest loss to Winnebago

ROCK FALLS – On a night when everything needed to go right for Rock Falls, hardly anything could go right.

Dropped catches slipping through the wrists against tough perimeter blocking, missing multiple second- and thirdchance tacking opportunities, and bad breaks on a pair of punts doomed the Rockets in a 43-16 loss to Winnebago at Hinders Field.

The two touchdowns for the Rockets (0-5, 0-3 BNC West) came after the 40-point running clock started, and both came on passes from Logan Pillars to Michael Berentes.

“I just don’t know” was a phrase that Rockets head coach Rich Montgomery softly repeated after the postgame huddle – a sign of a promising season of improvement so far struggling to click.

“I got to find a better way of coaching,” Montgomery lamented. “I try to convince them that what we’re doing is right. I think we just need to bring the intensity. We got to figure out how to develop intensity.”

The Rockets’ loss turned out to be Winnebago’s gain in a season which had high hopes but has been a struggle. The Indians (2-3, 1-2) tallied eight tackles for loss or no gain. Aside from a 31-yard rush from Braeden Westfall, the Rockets averaged just under 1 yard per rush in 24 chances.

Winnebago senior Michael Booth ended Rock Falls’ best chance at a score in the first half with 7 minutes left, with his 10-yard fourth-down sack at the Indians’ 17-yard line.

“We were in a hole, and we needed to dig out of it,” Winnebago coach Mark Helm said. “This was an opportunity, and I felt like we came ready to play tonight.”

Sterling gives Cavs slip Thornton hits milestone as Warriors crush LaSalle-Peru

STERLING – The only question seemed to be which LaSalle-Peru defender, Kayne Jenkins or Jake Doyle, was going to register a sack.

One small problem – they were trying to bring down Sterling quarterback Sterling Thornton.

Thornton somehow slipped that tackle on his way to the game’s first touchdown, and the Golden Warriors rolled to a 49-22 victory against the Cavaliers before a homecoming crowd at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Thornton accounted for 318 yards of total offense – 149 on the ground and 169 through the air. His career rushing total now stands at an unofficial 2,016 yards.

Only two Sterling players have rushed for more, Rod Anderson (2,862) and Pete Eshleman (2,757).

The milestone was not what was on Thornton’s mind as he basked among teammates on Sterling Chevrolet Field.

“Right now, I’m just happy that we’re winning,” Thornton said. “I’m more focused on the team right now. I’m sure down the road I’ll look back and be happy about it, and I am right now, but I just want to keep moving forward, and I just want this team to go as far as we can.”

Thornton scored four times, the most spectacular being the first. On a third-and-16 play from the L-P 39, he

sliced his way between two potential sackers in Jenkins and Doyle. After that, it was off to the races, and he didn’t stop until reaching the end zone.

“I think I got a little help from above,” Thornton said. “They told me that a guy was coming from behind, and I just saw the guy in front. Thankfully that guy didn’t hit me in the back, because I think I probably would have broke all my ribs.

“I got a little help from above, and I got a good block from Jordan [Asbury] on the end, and the rest is history.”

Thornton was far from a one-man show for Sterling (4-1, 1-0 NIB-12 West).

Asbury hauled in four passes for 117 yards, while Tony Diaz was perfect in the kicking department, with field goals of 20 and 28 yards, and five extra-point conversions without a miss.

Marcos can take punch Warren scores first, but Polo answers with 50 straight after that

POLO — With a handful of tall, burly linemen, Warren isn’t exactly the type of a team by whom you would want to get punched in the mouth.

But the Polo Marcos proved their jaw is not made of glass, pouring on 50 unanswered points after weathering an early flurry of punches thrown by their visiting opponent in a 50-6 NUIC Upstate victory.

Midway through the first quarter, Warren handed Polo its first deficit of the season on an eight-play touchdown drive that followed a game-opening three-and-out by the Marcos.

It wasn’t exactly a grand sequence of events for the fifth-ranked team in the 1A AP Poll, but the Marcos responded in typical lightning-quick fashion – 25 seconds later to be exact – with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Patterson to Jesse Ditzler. Polo eventually pulled away to a 22-6 halftime lead.

Nevertheless, with starting quarterback Brody Grobe out with an injury, the Marcos were hoping to utilize a power formation quite a bit

on offense in the first half. It didn’t work as well as coach Andrew Hofer would’ve liked, and if not for an illadvised fake punt by Warren in its own territory, the game would’ve been even closer at the break.

“That’s something we’re not accustomed to. We usually jump right out on people,” Hofer said. “We’ve got to handle the adversity a little better, but I thought we did a nice job of making some adjustments.”

Indeed, the Marcos (5-0) turned the table on the Warriors (3-2) to start the second half, forcing an initial three-and-out before proceeding on a downyour-throat, 10-play, 66-yard touchdown drive consisting exclusively of running plays.

“It was certainly a challenge we gave to the team.

We had a nice discussion at halftime,” Hofer said. “We came out at halftime and played more to our pace.”

Times change football Fortunes can flip quickly with good system, more players

M

ike Papoccia started Thursday’s football practice probably the same way he has 1,000 times before by walking among his players as they went through stretches.

He preached about everybody working hard, and each player being ready for when their number was called.

It’s probably a message each player has heard a million times, and will hear a few hundred more before the Comets’ season ends either during the playoffs or on the turf at Northern Illinois University.

Consistency is a difficult thing in high school football, especially at small schools.

It’s not a stretch to say that Papoccia and his staff do it as well as anyone in Illinois. He has 302 wins and five state titles to attest to that.

For pretty much everyone else, it’s about riding the roller coaster of athletic talent, and just hav-

Papoccia knows that well. Last week the Comets were pushed to the brink by Kewanee, a program with two playoff appearances in the past 15 years.

“People dwell too much on the past,” Papoccia said. “Some people thought we’d win by 40

points, but we knew that wasn’t going to happen.

Kewanee has some very good athletes, and their coach is putting in a very good system.

“That’s the thing. You look around, and there are a lot of teams that are turning things around this year.”

The Three Rivers has plenty of examples, including Princeton, which remains undefeated after

defeating Fulton on Friday.

The Tigers and Comets will tangle in Week 6.

Newman’s game today against Erie-Prophetstown features a Panther program that has turned a corner under coach Chuck Milem.

The Panthers are ranked No. 9 in 3A, and seem poised for their fourth playoff appearance in a row. Before that, the co-op suffered through a

decade of losing seasons.

But that’s the past.

The same goes for a team like Milledgeville, which is 4-1 after Friday’s win over River Ridge The Missiles haven’t been to the playoffs since 2008, but they have been known to strike when the iron is hot, with semifinal appearances in 1998, 1999 and 2008.

It’s just that the iron hasn’t been hot in the off years, thanks mostly to low numbers.

For other programs like Morrison and EastlandPearl City, both of which have recent 2A state titles in the case, the systems are still in place to win, there

just aren’t enough players to do it consistently.

But you can believe that when the cavalry arrives, whether it is next season, in five seasons or in 10 seasons, both the Mustangs and Wildcatz will be ready to make some big noise again.

So the lesson seems to be that things change.

For teams looking to hop conferences because it seems impossible that they’ll ever win in football against their current foes, that’s simply not true.

Remember that Rockford Lutheran was once the doormat in the Big Northern West.

For programs with dwindling or disappearing playoff hopes after Week 5, the consolation for those returning in 2016 is that things can change.

For those fighting for their playoff lives, take Papoccia’s advice and don’t dwell in the past, because you can miss a lot of the present and ruin the future worrying too much about the past.

Dominating Devils Hammonds leads Hall to rout over Sherrard

SHERRARD — The Hall Red Devils were primed for a dominating performance against foe Sherrard and the 72-39 score doesn’t begin to show just how dominating the Red Devils were in every aspect of Friday night’s win in Sherrard.

The Red Devils jumped all over their opponent early, capping off a 39-0 first half run on a 44-yard scamper from senior running back Chris Hammonds as he made defenders miss at first and then kicked it into high gear and outran the Tiger secondary.

“I was happy the way we came out in the first half. It was 39-0 in the final moments of the first half when we still had all of our first teams in and I’m happy with the way we played. I’m just glad to get out of here with another victory,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said.

After jumping all over Sherrard, the Devils tried to lighten their attack offensive and defensive attacks but the Sherrard Tigers refused to take out their starting squad, forcing Tieman to play his first team offense for most of the way.

The starting Red Devils defense didn’t allow a single point while

the starting offense rattled off nine touchdowns while special teams also added two scores.

Senior Matt Krolak was moved from the line last week and settled in nicely in only his second week at the position with two touchdowns and 135 yards rushing on 15 attempts to create a two-headed monster with Hammonds.

“Last week was the first week we tried Matt (Krolak) at running back and he can run the ball as he showed tonight but he’s just a great compliment to Chris (Hammonds) in the back field. Those two back there will be fine together and will help our offense in the future,” Tieman said.

Tigers never give up Princeton uses Bryant Field magic to catch the Steamers

PRINCETON — It looked like it was all over Friday night, the Princeton Tigers’ win streak coming to an end at four.

But after dropping a game-winning touchdown pass in the end zone, the Tigers found some Bryant Field magic.

Derek DeBruhl recovered his second fumble of the night at the Fulton 33 when the Steamers were trying to run the clock out.

Three plays later, Bret “Boom” Emmerson bulldozed his way into the end zone with 50.2 left to play to rally the Tigers to a stunning 24-20 come from behind win.

“We were feeling down, but we couldn’t give up. That’s not what this team’s about. That’s what the old Princeton Tigers would have done,” said DeBruhl said. “We’ve all battled our butts this year, we’re ready to go.”

About his second fumble recovery of the game, DeBruhl, who also had an interception, said he was just lucky.

“It was surreal. It felt awesome. I was glad to give my team another chance,” said DeBruhl, who is a product from neighbor Ohio in the Tiger co-op.

Emmerson knew what to do when he got the ball in his hands, lowering the boom at the goal line to drive in for the winning scored from three yards out.

“I tried to strive every inch I could. When the arms went up on the ref, I just went crazy,” said Emmerson, who also scored a 3-yard TD in the first quarter.

“When we were given a second chance, it was amazing.”

The Tiger football team was stormed by the PHS student section and pep band as they escaped with their fifth straight win. They are the first PHS team to start the year 5-0 since the 2002 state semifinalists.

Princeton took a 20-17 lead on the foot of Tanner Kuhne, who connected for a 30-yard field goal with 10:16 left to play.

Pound by pound Bruins pound the ball against Boilermakers

PERU — St. Bede coach Jim Eustice has preached to his team since the first day he got the job that they need to run the ball to be successful.

On Friday night, the Bruins made their coach happy with a big night pounding the ball on the ground.

Led by senior running back Baylee Hopps and physical offensive line play, the Bruins ran over the Kewanee Boilermakers 33-24 in Three-Rivers Mississippi action at the Academy.

Hopps was a workhorse, carrying the ball 32 times for 249 yards and three touchdowns. He also added a 35-yard touchdown reception.

All four of his scores came in the first half.

“I felt great coming into tonight,” Hopps said. “The linemen did a great job up front opening holes and I got as many yards as I could get every play.”

As a team, the Bruins (3-2, 2-1) totaled 324 yards rushing on 52 carries.

“We need to run the football,” coach Eustice said. “Our offensive line has worked hard. Hopps is a senior, he’s been starting here for three years and he’s paid his dues.

He made a lot of people miss with his speed to the outside.”

Hopps had a highlight reel run in the first quarter when he was met at the line of scrimmage, spinned away from the traffic and then darted 43 yards for a touchdown.

He also had a pair of three-yard touchdown runs in the first half.

Kewanee (2-3, 0-3) kept within striking distance in the game behind their passing attack. An 83-yard strike from quarterback Nick Sheets to Zach Brown got the Boilers on the board. In the third quarter, Sheets threw a quick pass to Desean Mabalcon who used his speed to outrace the Bruins for a 67-yard score.

Sheets finished with 319 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air. However, he threw three interceptions in the game, including two critical picks

by Hopps and Nick Sczcepaniak in the fourth quarter.

“All of our defensive backs know our responsibilities and the coaches have coached us up,” Hopps said. “We just played hard, reacted to the ball and made some big picks.”

Brady Booker had the other touchdown run for the Bruins, a four-yard plunge in the third quarter.

Storm surge past Amboy Bureau Valley’s big plays sink Clippers in Manlius

MANLIUS – Will Konneck and Drake Davis traded big plays as the Storm breezed to a 54-30 Three Rivers Rock division win over Amboy.

The running back-quarterback combo accounted for four Bureau Valley (2-3) touchdowns before Amboy managed an answer. Even though the Clippers kept pace from the 2:40 mark of the second quarter on, big Storm plays continued to pour down.

Storm coach Spencer Davis said the homecoming win should propel a “finally healthy” young Storm squad.

“The last couple of weeks, we’ve been down with injuries,” he said. “We finally got our full team back.”

Bureau Valley outgained Amboy 527-307 in total yards. Davis had 316 passing yards; 80 of them came on the Storm’s first drive of the third quarter, a catch-andrun to Konneck, who skirted untouched around Clipper defenders.

That was only the second-

longest play of the game.

A touchdown run from Amboy’s Drake Barlow made the score 40-22 in the third quarter when Konneck took the ensuing kickoff return 85 yards, untouched, to pay dirt.

At 47-22, the big lead forced the Clippers to put the ball in the air, where the Storm forced three interceptions out of Clippers quarterback Jordan Hochstatter. The second fell into the hands of Davis, who returned it 35 yards for a pick-6, the nail in Amboy’s coffin.

Coach Davis praised both Konneck and Drake Davis. He said his team had a solid week of practice heading into the matchup.

Ryon Richardson led the Amboy ground game with 140 yards rushing and a touchdown.

It could be the start of a turnaround, with four games left for BV to regain its season.

The wait for win No. 1 is over for the Morrison football team as it beat Riverdale 22-7 in a Three Rivers Rock game in Port Byron.

Andy Bird scored twice and Justin Jensen added another score to lead the Mustangs (1-4, 1-1 TRAC Rock).

Jensen opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Dylan Keller with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter. Riverdale (0-5, 0-2) cut the deficit to 8-7 on a Braydon Pridemore 3-yard TD run, but that was all it would get.

Bird ran for a 10-yard score in the third, and ran a punt back for a 65-yard touchdown to cap the scoring.

Riverdale was eliminated from playoff contention with its fifth loss.

Rockford Lutheran 60, Oregon 0:

The Hawks couldn’t keep pace in a Big Northern West loss in Rockford.

Terry Page led Oregon (2-3, 0-2 BNC West) with 19 rushing yards on eight carries, while Brayton Finch and Caleb Mennen had matching rushing totals – 17 yards on 10 carries. The Hawks were out-gained 502-80.

Lutheran’s James Robinson used 12 carries to gain 305 yards and six touchdowns, all on runs of 20 yards or more. He scored three times in the first quarter, twice in the second

and once again in the third.

Milledgeville 35, River Ridge 0: The Missiles

posted a shutout in a road NUIC Upstate win.

Durand led 7-0 after the first quarter before the Raiders poured it on.

Forreston sneaks past Thunder

FORRESTON – West Carroll coach Matt Leitzen lamented on a small fraction of Friday’s 28-22 loss to Forreston.

“Four minutes,” Leitzen said. “We played smash mouth football for four quarters for the first time in years, but they out-executed us for 4 minutes.”

With 5 seconds left in the first half, Thunder quarterback Kody Plattenberger connected with Austin Mallow for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Jake Miller tacked on a conversion and the upset-minded Thunder had an 8-6 lead.

Midway through the third quarter, though, Forreston had a commanding 28-8 lead on its way to a 4-1 record.

Logan Rogers returned the second-half kickoff 50 yards, and one play later fullback Matt Akins burst up the middle for a 30-yard touchdown.

After a three-and-out for West Carroll, linebacker Noah Gipe stunted and blocked the punt. Taking over at the 25-yard line,

Forreston was quickly into the end zone again, this time on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Caleb Poffenberger, making it 20-8 with less than 4 minutes gone in the quarter.

“The kickoff return and blocked punt were what hurt us most,” Leitzen said.

“That was huge momentum for them.”

The Cardinals got the ball right back on an interception by Cade Kuelling, on a misread by Plattenberger.

Seven running plays later, it

was 28-8, as Rogers scored from 5 yards out on the counter.

“I like how we came out in the second half,” Rogers said. “We made some mistakes and had big spurts, so we need to work on our consistency.”

Plattenberger drove his team 65 yards to pull West Carroll within 28-14 on a 1-yard sneak. With 5 minutes left in the game and facing fourth down, Plattenberger scored again from a yard out to make it 28-22.
