OREGON – Holding a 28-27 lead with 7 minutes, 18 seconds left in the game, the Dixon football team was forced to leave Landers-Loomis Field in Oregon because of lightning.

At 9:40 p.m., Oregon received a punt and was 64 yards away from the Duke goal line when officials called a halt to the evenly-matched contest.

At 11 p.m., it was decided the game would resume at 1 p.m.

Saturday.

The Hawks had taken a 27-14 lead earlier in the half on their only pass completion of the game, a 66-yarder from Jerrick Orsted to a Maverik Good.

Good was wide open in the middle of the field, as the Dukes had nearly everyone in the box.

It was Oregon’s third straight touchdown after trailing 14-7, but the Dukes put together a comeback of their own.

Quarterback Nate Gascoigne, who started the game with nine straight completions, efficiently led Dixon 75 yards to pull within 27-21. Mixing the run and pass, Gascoigne found Kandras Martin for a 4-yard touchdown pass. Arthur Cox sparked the

The Dukes defense then forced a three-and-out, getting the ball back near midfield on Oregon’s first punt of the game.

Dixon’s leading receiver, Kyle LeBlanc, who was held to two catches for 5 yards through the first three quarters, got the lead back for his team.

On fourth-and-3 from the 23, Gascoigne threw to LeBlanc in the flat. Three Hawk defenders appeared to have LeBlanc

pinned in for a loss, but he sidestepped all three on his way to a touchdown.

Kaylon Westmorland made it 4-for-4 on extra point kicks on a boot that barely snuck inside the left goal post, and Dixon led 28-27 late in the third quarter.

The key defensive play for Dixon happened with the game sitting at that same score.

Orsted got loose for a 60-yard run on a quarterback keeper and looked headed for a score.

The game couldn’t have started better for Dixon, with Nyrel Sullivan bursting through the line for a 50-yard touchdown, one play after Aramis Hussung recovered a Hawk fumble.

On its most impressive drive of the game, Dixon overcame four penalties for 35 yards and converted three third downs of 16 yards or longer to take a 14-7 lead. Traversing 80 yards in 15 plays, Gascoigne lofted a spiral in the end zone for Benny Mayes, who had quadruple coverage on him.

Mayes cradled in the perfectly thrown ball for a 16-yard score on third-and-long.

On Oregon’s next possession, Caleb Mennen broke free for a 35-yard touchdown run to tie the game, but on the previous play, top Hawk rusher John Ghibellini left the game for good with an ankle injury.

Still standing, somehow Bauer bounces off Clippers as Panthers pull away for win

ERIE – Jack Bauer wasn’t sure how he was still standing.

The Erie-Prophetstown running back took a sweep run to the short side of the field on Friday, and bounced off at least three Amboy players to turn what looked to be a short gain into a long touchdown in the Panthers’ 32-7 win over the Clippers in Erie.

“I have no idea how that happened,” Bauer said of his 69-yard score. “It was a blur.

My teammates told me I got hit, then one of our guys hit me to stand me up. I couldn’t believe I was on my feet, so I ran as fast as I could.”

Bauer scored two of the Panthers’ five rushing touchdowns in a dominant display of the team’s triple-option ground attack. The Panthers (3-1) gained 457 yards of total offense, all of which came on the ground.

Quarterback Phillip Coers threw the ball twice, both incompletions, but rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Coers ran for scores of 21 and 85 yards. Dylan Binion was

a workhorse for E-P, getting the most touches with 12. He put up 134 yards and two touchdowns on runs on 64 and 15 yards.

“We all came in ready to play,” Coers said. “Once the schedules came out, we looked for Amboy right away. When we saw it was our homecoming game, we couldn’t wait.”

The Clippers beat E-P last season on the Panthers’ homecoming night, and were ready for a tough game.

Amboy (2-2) looked poised to steal the show again with a strong first half. Dallas Appleman opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run 2 minutes into the second quarter to put the Clippers up 7-0. Another tough break E-P’s Herrera injured in Week 4 for second consecutive year

RIE – Week 4 of the past two football seasons haven’t been kind to Pedro Herrera.

The Erie-Prophetstown starting left tackle broke a leg last season in a Week 4 win over Fulton. On Friday, the senior went down on the first play of the game against Amboy-LaMoille at Erie with a rolled ankle and had to be helped off the field.

He didn’t return in the Panthers’ 32-7 win.

Keep-away challenge Kewanee nearly bests Comets at what Newman does best

STERLING – The Newman Comets like to play keep-away from their opponents. Turns out they don’t like it as much when other teams do it to them.

But after heading into the locker room for halftime Friday trailing Kewanee 21-16, the Comets made sure they were the ones in control the rest of the way.

Newman had three time-consuming scoring drives in the second half, rallying for a 38-29 win at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

“We just came out and played like it was a new game,” said senior running back Brady Rude, who ran roughshod over the Kewanee defense for 228 yards and three second-half touchdowns. “We’ve been in that position before, and we just wanted to put it all together in the second half.”

While the defense struggled to contain the Boilers’ passing game before halftime, the Comets (4-0, 1-0 Three Rivers Mississippi) got the job done when it counted.

Only 16 of Nick Sheets’ 192 passing yards came over the final 8 minutes, and Newman finally

turned up the pressure on the Kewanee junior QB. “We just found a couple of defenses that we were comfortable with,” Rude said, “and the line got the job done at the end.

We got him out of the pocket, and that was a game-changer.”

Sheets was kept pretty clean in the pocket all night long, and he took advantage. He connected with basketball standout Donovan Oliver for jump-ball touchdowns in each half, and also hit Zach Brown from 20 yards out with 13.3 seconds left before halftime.

“My receivers made some great plays out there, and I love my line,” Sheets said. “They had a really gutsy effort tonight, and this is a good building block for us.”

The (Red) Devils made them do it

PRING VALLEY — Jimmy Robbins and Matt Heiden grew up Princeton Tigers and bled Princeton blue. Robbins was a member of Princeton’s 1989 state runnerup football team his junior year. Heiden played baseball at PHS. Naturally, they were big rivals of the Hall Red Devils and anything Hall High School did or stood for.

So, who will they be rooting for Saturday when rivals Princeton and Hall met for the showdown in the Valley of the two unbeaten teams? They were postponed Friday night by the weather.

Well, gasp, at least one of them will be rooting for the Red Devils. Yes, those same Hall Red Devils.

Both Robbins and Heiden married into the Red Devil family.

Heiden, a 1992 PHS grad, married the former Corri Roach (Hall class of ‘93).

Their son, Christian, is a senior linebacker and a big part of the Red Devils’ defense. Their daughter,

Robbins (PHS ‘91) married the former Tracy McCook (Hall ‘95). Their nephew, Drew Pullam of Ladd, is the Hall quarterback. Their daughter,

freshman Rainey, also runs cross country for Hall.

Heiden may have been a Tiger back in his day, but blood, even if it’s Hall red now, is thicker than water.

“I never thought I’d ever be rooting for Hall, ever, but now I bleed red and white. I do get grief from

friends but it’s all in good fun and humor,” said Heiden, who coached six years in the Spring Valley flag football program, coaching his son and other Red Devils.

Corri Heiden was captain of the Hall cheerleading squad and her brother,

Kyle, Christian’s uncle, was a star running back for the Red Devils in the mid-’90s.

“My son already had Hall football running through his veins. So anyway you look at it, the formula was there for me,” Heiden said.

Robbins said not in a million years would he have ever dreamt of being a Hall Red Devil fan. His mother, Fran, who went to Hall, now bleeds only Tiger blue. All of her six boys went to and played sports at Princeton, and most of her grandchildren are going through the Princeton school district.

She pokes fun at him, for being a Hall fan.

Heiden finds it funny that his best friend growing up, Matt McDonald, married the former Julie Croissant (Hall ‘91), lives in the Hall district and coaches at Hall.

“We didn’t plan this but it all just happened,” Heiden said.

Heiden can be found sitting in the Hall section Saturday wearing strange colors he would have never ever thought about wearing 25 years ago.

“I am really looking for forward to the game vs.

Princeton. It’s going to be a very good game, a tough game for both sides. And, of course, I will be wearing red and white,” he said before kickoff.

Robbins was a little noncommittal. When asked who we can say he would be rooting for, Robbins said, “You can’t,” adding that he almost wishes both teams could win.

He added, though, “While my mother, my wife and now my kids will go to Hall … Deep down I’ll always be a Tiger.”

The Nesti Plunge Hall, PHS fans will have to wait a little longer for BC rivalry game

SPRING VALLEY — All the hype that was building between Bureau County and Three Rivers Conference rivals Hall and Princeton for Friday night were washed away for another day.

Hall officials, athletic director Eric Bryant and coach Randy Tieman, determined the field was too wet for safe playing conditions with a pool of standing water on the west end of the field. And with more heavy rain imminent, it would only get worse, they said.

So, they sent the few fans who had gathered around Nesti Stadium home. They will come back for another try Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. varsity kickoff. The sophomore teams will follow, field and weather permitting.

“Both team are ready to go. I know Coach Snyder was ready to go, and we are too. (But) there’s water sitting down there (west end). We thought it was in the best interest of everybody to push it off to tomorrow,” Tieman said.

Noting the sparse turnout at that time, about 45 minutes before the scheduled 5:30 p.m. kickoff, Tieman said, “This is going to be a huge game. And rightfully so, it should be played in front of a big crowd.”

Super Hall football fan John Mussatti of Ladd has been to a lot of football games, 318 and counting dating back to the mid-’80s. He doesn’t remember the field being as saturated as it was Friday.

“Boy water ran through this place, like crazy.

This is really low here. It’s really low and bad,” he said, the rain getting heavier as he spoke.

Mussatti is hopeful to return for his 319th

game in drier conditions Saturday.

Both coaches face the task of taking their players down off their high from Friday and getting them back up Saturday.

“At this point, got to go back, get on the bus, unwind a little bit, get home, get some rest, make sure we get our orders for tonight and make sure we’re ready to rock and roll,” Snyder said. “Our kids were ready to go. Now we got to channel that back and bring it back tomorrow.”

Having experienced similar circumstances in each of the past two seasons, Snyder said he has no doubt his squad “will adapt and overcome” the challenge.

Princeton senior quarterback Jake Reinhardt said it will just be another thing the Tigers have to overcome coming up against the No. 2 ranked Red Devils on their home turf.

“We were all ready to go, but another night of rest and nerves building up will serve us well I think as we can’t wait to play (Saturday),” he said.

Tieman said he had given his team a heads up about the playing conditions.

“I talked to them early possibly about not playing, so they didn’t get too hyped up yet, I hope,” he said. “I’ll go down there (locker room) and talk to them now and make sure we get back even keel here. Probably bring them in tomorrow and walk them through some stuff.”

• Notes: Some old Princeton Tigers, who saw a Shaw Media picture and video of the Hall field posted online, said it didn’t look as bad as it did their senior year (‘85) playing at Hall.

They recalled that the ball floated away when they put it down on the field.

Missiles red hot in rain Milledgeville strikes early and often in rout of Orangeville

MILLEDGEVILLE – After a 30-minute lightning delay in the first quarter of their NUIC Upstate home game against Orangeville, the soaked orange trim on the Milledgeville Missiles jerseys turned into a dark red.

From that point, the Missiles became red hot. Especially Troy Litwiller.

The Missiles senior quarterback took the first handoff after the delay and fooled Orangeville for a 61-yard run around the right end, and the Missiles scores kept coming in a 46-6 win at Floyd Daub Field.

Litwiller’s score put the Missiles up 14-0. The quarterback also made his mark on special teams, posting his team’s next score on a 40-yard punt return.

That score gave the Missiles (3-1, 3-1 NUIC Upstate) their fourth special teams touchdown in 4 weeks.

“We knew their ends were not very talented on the outside,” said Missiles junior Jeremy Bibler, who led his team with 146 yards on 11 carries. “We just went out there on the first play, it worked,

and we just kept going at it.”

The Missiles outgained the Broncos 288-11 at halftime, with the Missiles defense collecting 10 tackles for loss, and an additional six stops for no gain.

Junior defensive end Payton Harris led the Missiles with two tackles for loss.

“I think we had a lot more energy this week,” Harris said, a week removed from the team’s only loss, suffered against AFC. “Our preparation during practices were a lot better. It almost seemed like we knew what they were running before they went to the line.”

Before the Broncos (0-4, 0-3) switched from its spread to an option formation, they only put up 8 yards. Raiders can’t close out Bulldogs

Rockets have no answer for Byron’s rushing attack

BYRON – Coming off a 13-6 loss to Oregon, Rock Falls coach Rich Montgomery was optimistic that things were starting to look up for the Rockets against Byron. It was the fewest points the Rockets have allowed in years.

“I’m not worried about [the weather],” Montgomery said during a 30-minute lightning delay in the sophomore game. “We had some really nice things happen last week. We showed some intensity. We showed some excitement.

“Byron’s offense is similar to Oregon’s in scheme and what they’re trying to do. It meant a less involved week of preparation for us.”

That optimism quickly vanished. Zack Cogswell broke a 65-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game, and the Tigers (3-1, 2-0 BNC West) never looked back. The

downpour of touchdowns made the soaking weather seem like a damp afterthought, as Byron rolled to a 51-0 win.

The Tigers had eight offensive plays and four touchdowns in the first quarter. After Cogswell was Avery Carlson’s 7-yard score after the Rockets botched a punt attempt.

Then came Justin Martinez’s rushing score on first and goal, set up by a 65-yard pass a play before.

And for good measure, Jacob Elsbury’s 13-yard touchdown run put the Tigers up 29-0 through one quarter. With Byron’s defense snuffing the Rockets offense, holding them to 80 total yards of offense in the game, Rock Falls hardly managed an answer. The Tigers sacked quarterback Logan Pillars eight times.

To Montgomery, it showcased a complete lack of intensity. He said his team knew exactly what to expect out of Byron.

“They ran everything

they knew they’d run,” Montgomery said. “It’s not a matter of confidence. We’ve got to bring more intensity…

“I don’t have the magic offense. I don’t have the magic defense. Until we can turn it on, like they did, it’s going to look more like that.”

The closest Rock Falls came to scoring was at the end of the second quarter.

After Dejuan Reyes recovered a Byron fumble, setting Rock Falls up at the Tigers’ 35, the Rockets went on a 12-play drive to the Tigers’ 12.

There again, Byron stalled the Rockets, forcing a turnover on downs and closing the half with a 36-0 lead.

By game’s end, seven different players had scored touchdowns for Byron.

Cogswell’s opening run was enough to lead all rushers with 65 total yards.

Rock Falls was led by Blake Wind, who had 19 yards rushing and two receptions for 12 yards.

Mustangs hang with Rockridge in loss
