Sterling plays spoiler Warriors take advantage of Alleman’s mistakes in Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND – The Alleman football team claimed a moral victory out of last weekend’s last-second loss to Metamora.

The same result against another state-rated squad Friday night was met with far less enthusiam, though.

“Like the scoreboard said, we lost,” Alleman senior Caleb Dorsey said after another Pioneers’ comeback came up short at Augustana’s Lindberg Stadium, 28-21 this time to Sterling.

“Last week we played hard and smart in the second half,’’ agreed Alleman coach Todd Depoorter. “This week? I take responsibility. We took a step back.’’

Most concerning for the Pioneers (1-2) were five turnovers, including a fumble and interception on back-to-back thirdquarter possessions to set up Sterling scores with short fields.

That allowed Class 5A’s eighth-ranked Golden Warriors (3-0) to turn a 14-14 contest into a 28-14 lead.

Alleman got back within 28-21 on Dorsey’s 1-yard dive to cap a 14-play scoring drive with 4 minutes and 53 seconds to play.

“They’re very well coached.

They have a nice offensive game plan. They overloaded at times with their defense.

But we practice against those things, and we didn’t execute.

Obviously I didn’t do a very good job.”

Sterling especially did that after a Fernandez fumble was recovered by Ethan Sensor.

Two plays later, Andrew Spaulding was in the end zone after a 5-yard carry set up by Thornton’s 30-yard pass to Turner Morse.

On the following possession, Fernandez was intercepted by Jacoby, setting up Sterling 23 yards from paydirt.

Seven snaps later, on a fourthand-2 situation from the 5-yardline, Thornton pushed the Warriors ahead by two scores.

Long drives at Hinders Hawks, Rockets trade lengthy possessions in BNC West battle

ROCK FALLS – Ball-control offense and the Oregon Hawks go together hand in hand. But ballcontrol offense and the Rock Falls Rockets?

The Rockets matched the Hawks’ ability to go on extended drives during Friday night’s Big Northern West game at Hinders Field. The difference was Oregon’s ability to finish off one more of its drives with a touchdown in a 13-6 victory.

Rock Falls got 250 of its 260 yards through the air, as Logan Pillars completed 28 of his 45 passes to six different receivers. His 24-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Harris with 6:20 to play got the Rockets (0-3, 0-1) within a score.

Then the Rockets recovered the ensuing onside kick.

“Our confidence was sky high at that point,” Pillars said. “The short passes were working, and we felt once we got the ball back that this game might just be ours to win.”

“I watched that happen, then just tried to stay calm and get the defense into the right mindset,” Oregon senior Maverik Good

said. “We just had to get a stop.”

The Hawks (2-1, 1-0) did just that, stopping Rock Falls wideout Blake Wind a yard short on fourth down inside the Oregon 20. That led to the final Oregon drive of the game, which took up the final 4:16 and ended with the final horn on the Rock Falls 4-yard line.

“I was over there pacing on the sideline, just hoping my guys could get us the ball back,” Pillars said. “We still had plenty of time, but Oregon did a good job of running out the clock.”

“Once we got that stop, I knew it was over,” Oregon senior John Ghibellini said. “Our offensive line was great tonight, and they opened the holes for us to control the ball.”

Full dose of Robinson Lutheran star rushes for 454 yards, 7 TDs against Dukes

DIXON – With 3 minutes left in the first quarter of Friday’s game against Rockford Lutheran, many Dixon fans started heading for the exits.

They didn’t miss much.

The Crusaders, up 42-0 at the time, went on to a 95-28 victory at A.C. Bowers Field. It was the Big Northern West opener for both teams.

“That’s a heck of a team we played,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “What can I say? That’s the No. 3-ranked team in the state, and we’re not there yet. That’s pretty clear.”

Leading the way for Lutheran (3-0) was senior running back James Robinson, a 5-foot-11, 215-pound ball of muscle and speed who shredded the Dixon defense all night. In less than two quarters of play, he had 17 carries for 454 yards and seven touchdowns.

He had a 58-yard touchdown run on the game’s first offensive play, and later added scoring runs of 96, 55, 55, 8, 5 and 5 yards. Robinson now has about 7,600 yards for his career, unofficially, and needs around 900 more to catch the alltime IHSA rushing leader, Westville’s Caleb Pratt, who is at 8,477.

His performance spoke for itself, in what had been a week filled with

computer trash talking between some Crusaders and Dukes.

“There was a lot of stuff on Twitter, and people were messing with me, just talking, but I really wasn’t worried about it,” Robinson said. “I just wanted to play.”

When asked if there was much talk during the game, Robinson said, “In the first 2 minutes. There was none after that.”

Robinson was far from a one-man gang, however. Junior quarterback Peyton Womack threw touchdown passes of 56 and 44 yards to Marcus Hayes, and Hayes added a 6-yard TD run.

Logan Davis and Joshua Davis had TD runs of 10 and 75 yards, respectively. The Crusaders’ defense even got into the act, as linebacker Matt Anderson returned an interception 20 yards for a score.

Close for a while Mustangs hang tough, but Comets pull away with big plays

MORRISON – For about 22 minutes of the first half, it looked like the recent lopsidedness of the Newman-Morrison series was about to change.

However, with a pair of quick Newman scoring strikes to end the half, it became another year, another big Comets win against Mustangs, this one 30-8 at E. M. “Bud” Cole Field.

The Mustangs, while low on numbers, hung tough with the top-ranked team in 3A for most of the second half. With Andy Bird having more time at fullback, the Mustangs (0-3) ground out key yards and first downs to hang with the Comets.

Bird had 48 yards on nine carries in the first half, but was held to two carries for 17 yards in the second half.

“Morrison played with a lot of heart tonight,” Newman coach Mike

Papoccia said. “We knew that coming in. They weren’t just going to lay down.

Mending broken dream Rock Falls’ Doering coping with losing senior year to injury

ike Berentes found himself in a familiar situation during Rock Falls’ Week 1 football game against Sterling.

It was similar to a year ago, when Berentes, then the Rock Falls principal, was kneeling on Hinders Field attempting to calm an injured Rockford Lutheran player in Week 9.

Berentes tried to take the player’s mind off his injury and talked with him.

Two weeks ago, Berentes was gripping Rockets senior Keegan Doering’s hand on the field just a few yards away from the near sideline soon after the senior went down in a heap.

“In both situations, you just want to give comfort,” Berentes said.

“Keegan wanted to look at his leg, but you don’t want him to worry any more than he already is so I just held his hand.”

Clippers slice up Rams Richardson leads Amboy-LaMoille in Three Rivers Rock route

AMBOY – Ryon Richardson was a just few strides away from a large pizza.

Amboy-LaMoille assistant football coach Andrew Full told the Clippers’ return man that if he brought back a punt for a touchdown, Full would buy him a pizza.

Richardson almost made his coach pay up as he went 65 yards on the return, but came up just short. He finished the job two plays later and punched it in from the goal line, helping the Clippers cruise to a 50-21 win over visiting Riverdale on Friday in Three Rivers Rock play.

“We knew we could run, and the outside was working at first,” Richardson said. “Then when they started to catch on we pounded it up the middle.”

The Clippers (2-1), finished with 293 yards of offense, 246 of which came on the ground.

Richardson led the charge with four touchdowns in the win, running for scores of 3 and 4 yards, and catching two TD

passes of 15 and 29 yards from quarterback Jordan Hochstatter.

Drake Barlow added a gamehigh 110 yards and two touchdowns, helping AmboyLaMoille overcome nine penalties for 77 yards.

Riverdale (0-3) looked lifeless to open the game. The Rams punted twice and had a punt blocked in their first three possessions. After coach Mike Goodwin gave his team a verbal trashing at the end of the quarter trailing 21-0, did the Rams start to come to life.

“Coach got us going a bit,” said Rams’ receiver Blake Decleroq, who had an interception and a 36-yard receiving touchdown.

“We just weren’t ready to play in the first quarter and it hurt us.”

SPRING VALLEY — Hall coach Randy Tieman could have went conservative in the fourth quarter. Instead, he went for the kill.

Leading by a touchdown in the fourth quarter, Red Devils’ quarterback Drew Pullman connected with Patrick Einhaus on a post pattern for a 42-yard score with 6:22 left in the game to lift Hall to a 27-13 victory over rival St. Bede in their Three-Rivers Conference Mississippi Division opener.

The decisive play came on 3rdand-7 out of a time-out where assistant coach Ryan Ferrari saw something he thought the Devils (3-0, 1-0) could exploit.

“It was the way the way they were covering us and Coach Ferrari coming to me and saying ‘I think we can run this’”, Tieman said. “It ended up being wide open.”

The score came after St. Bede quarterback Bryant Eustice was called for a controversial intentional grounding in the Hall end zone, resulting in a safety.

St. Bede coach Jim Eustice didn’t want to comment on the call, but was pleased with his team’s effort against the second ranked Red Devils.

“We had some opportunities, we played our butts off,” Eustice said. “I’m proud of them. We had a lot of adversity. We were in it and as we continue to grow we will learn how to make those plays.”

Hall never trailed in the game and took their opening drive 74 yards for a touchdown, capped by a one-yard Chris Hammonds’ dive into the end zone.

Pullman threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the game. Einhaus had another touchdown grab in the first half, a key score with 7 seconds remaining. On that drive, Hall moved the ball 93 yards in 1:12 with Pullman scrambling and finding Einhaus in the back of the endzone for a 30 yard score and a 13-6 lead at the half.

Trophy time Jett, Tigers fly past Kewanee to bring home traveling trophy

KEWANEE — The buzz surrounding the 117th meeting between the Princeton Tigers and Kewanee Boilermakers was muffled to a whimper by the roar of the Tigers as they shut their longtime rival 31-0 Friday in Kewanee.

Kewanee looked to set the tone for the rivalry match early as Princeton fumbled the opening kickoff which was recovered by Kewanee on the Boilermaker 18 , putting Kewanee in a commanding position early.

“We made a mistake. Great football teams are teams that can win when they encounter a sudden change and adversity and our kids came out on top of that sudden change and stepped up defensively when something bad happened,” KHS coach Tyler Nichols said.

The early threat lead to a missed field goal attempt and was the only trip the Boilermakers would make to the Tigers red zone as the Princeton defense thoroughly dominated the Boilermakers from there on out allowing the Tigers offense to outpace the Boilermakers 31-0 for the remainder of the game.

The shutout was the Tigers second of the year as they haven’t allowed a touchdown since in seven quarters and have outscored their opponents

121-6 over the three-game span.

PHS jumped on the board with 5:06 to play in the first on a sweep left by senior Jacob Smith that started the avalanche of first half scoring by the Tigers.

Senior quarterback Jake Reinhardt went 9-18 with 129 yards and three TDs while senior wideout Jett Wedekind hauled in two touchdowns on 64 yards receiving.

“Our defense has played really well and we just have to continue to maintain our confidence and physicality and that’s what will take us to our ultimate goal,” Snyder said. “A lot of it to me is fundamental football. We talk about owning our piece of grass up front and being physical and creating a new line of scrimmage and our backers cleaned things up.”

Princeton takes a 58-55-4 edge in their head-to-head matchups with Kewanee in a rivalry that started in 1897 and brings the trophy home for the second straight year.

FRANKLIN GROVE – Ordinarily, having an opposing running back gash you for a 53-yard touchdown run isn’t supposed to be a positive turning point in your team’s season. Neither is a pass interference penalty against you on a fourth-down play in the final minute of the game.

But both of the above occurred Friday in Ashton-Franklin Center’s potentially season-saving 21-15 win over previously unbeaten Milledgeville. And the Raiders turned both into positives.

STOCKTON – In a battle between state-ranked teams, a 48-8 win over Stockton did more than solidify Polo’s status as top dog of the Upstate division of the NUIC. It also served notice to the rest of Class 1A that the Marcos are for real.

“Earlier this week in practice, we said we wanted to use it as a statement game,” Polo coach Andrew Hofer said.

The first message was sent early, when Brad Cavanaugh nearly took the opening kickoff for a touchdown, just barely getting tripped up at midfield. Seven plays later, he was in the end zone on a 7-yard run, giving Polo (3-0, 3-0) an 8-0 lead. Quarterback Brody Grobe, who was 5-for5 for 98 yards passing, found Richie Bartnick on a 32-yard completion on secondand-35 to keep the drive alive.
